Abstract

Although the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) wave has peaked with the second wave underway, the world is still struggling to manage potential systemic risks and unpredictability of the pandemic. A particular challenge is the “superspreading” of the virus, which starts abruptly, is difficult to predict, and can quickly escalate into medical and socio-economic emergencies that contribute to long-lasting crises challenging our current ways of life. In these uncertain times, organizations and societies worldwide are faced with the need to develop appropriate strategies and intervention portfolios that require fast understanding of the complex interdependencies in our world and rapid, flexible action to contain the spread of the virus as quickly as possible, thus preventing further disastrous consequences of the pandemic. We integrate perspectives from systems sciences, epidemiology, biology, social networks, and organizational research in the context of the superspreading phenomenon to understand the complex system of COVID-19 pandemic and develop suggestions for interventions aimed at rapid responses. publishersversion published

Abstract

Rare earths (RE) are currently considered some of the most critical elements, being crucial in future sustainable applications. Their high demand, price fluctuations, supply risk and geopolitical factors increase the interest in recovering RE from secondary sources such as pre-consumer scrap, industrial residues and end-of-life products. RE recovery from fluorescent lamp wastes and their subsequent selective separation was successful along a three-step process: (i) solid-state chlorination (SSC), (ii) leaching at pH 3 and (iii) solvent extraction. SSC is the key-step to separate RE from residual material. Optimal SSC parameters were set by using an experimental statistical design which allows for evaluating the cross effects between temperature, residence time and NH4Cl:waste ratio. The digestion step was optimized as well reaching a liquid:solid ratio (L:S) of 40 which accounted for a reduction of 20% in the use of water. Yttrium and Europium have been recovered separately from the pregnant solution by a four-stage cross-flow solvent extraction process combining Cyanex 923 and Cyanex 572 reaching initial purities = 94%. 110. Enhanced alumina extraction from kaolin by thermochemical activation using charcoal

Abstract

The present work aims to increase the alumina percentage recovery (APR) extracted from kaolin via the addition of 0.5-4.0 wt.% charcoal as a thermochemical fluxing agent in the lime-sintering process at 1260-1360°C. The transformation, microstructural and microtextural changes and self-disintegration performance were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction/X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and laser diffraction particle-size distribution analysis. The optimum enhancement of APR, from 77.7% to 87.40%, was obtained by sintering at 1360°C with the addition of 1.5% charcoal. With further increase of the charcoal content to 4%, the APR reduced to 75.6%. Combustion of ≤1.5% charcoal provided additional heat that amorphized the crystalline calcium aluminate into highly leachable amorphous phases with improved self-disintegration efficiency. Sintering at temperatures of >1360°C or with charcoal contents >4% led to mullite crystallization and decreased alumina leachability, thereby reducing the APR. Charcoal is a cost-effective and energy-efficient activator to increase the APR extracted from kaolin.

Abstract

Background With the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic surging and new mutations evolving, trust in vaccines is essential. Methods We explored correlates of vaccine hesitancy, considering political believes and psychosocial concepts, conducting a non-probability quota-sampled online survey with 1007 Austrians. Results We identified several important correlates of vaccine hesitancy, ranging from demographics to complex factors such as voting behavior or trust in the government. Among those with hesitancy towards a COVID-19 vaccine, having voted for opposition parties (opp) or not voted (novote) were (95% Confidence Intervall (CI)opp, 1.44–2.95) to 2.25-times (95%CInovote, 1.53–3.30) that of having voted for governing parties. Only 46.2% trusted the Austrian government to provide safe vaccines, and 80.7% requested independent scientific evaluations regarding vaccine safety to increase willingness to vaccine. Conclusions Contrary to expected, psychosocial dimensions were only weakly correlated with vaccine hesitancy. However, the strong correlation between distrust in the vaccine and distrust in authorities suggests a common cause of disengagement from public discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

During the calcination of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (struvite) in the process of recycling to obtain phosphoric acid, ammonia is released in addition to water and carbon dioxide. With a gas scrubber, e.g., in the form of a bubble column reactor, ammonia can be recovered as a usable valuable material. Abstract

Germanium wird in der Regel als Nebenkomponente in der Zink- oder Kupfer-Metallurgie gewonnen. Ein Beitrag, auch einheimische Ressourcen (z.B. Haldenmaterialien) nutzen zu können, besteht in der Mobilisierung des bodengebundenen Germaniums über Pflanzen (Phytomining). In der Arbeit wurden drei Verfahrenskonzepte für die Germaniumgewinnung über die Akkumulation in Pflanzen entwickelt. Der fermentative Aufschluss des Pflanzenmaterials in einem Biogasprozess ist dabei ein Schlüsselschritt für die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Verfahrens. Weiterhin erwies sich als maßgeblich, daß es gelang, die Germaniumfraktion nahezu vollständig im festen Gärrest zu binden. Die anschließende energetische Verwertung des germaniumhaltigen festen Rückstandes liefert eine germaniumhaltige Asche, die nasschemisch gelaugt und extraktiv auf GeO2 aufbereitet wird.
