International audience; Mediterranean ecosystems are severely impacted by urbanization, habitat clearing, fires and landscape fragmentation; conservation actions are urgently needed. The protection status of a given area depends notably on the presence and detection rate of protected species. Further, habitat restoration, conservation translocations, or population reinforcement require precise information on the distribution of individuals. Thus, the success of important conservation measures relies on the capacity to locate individuals. Thanks to their sense of smell combined with high learning abilities, dogs have been used to track a wide range of biological targets. They generally surpass humans to detect cryptic species. In this study, we aimed at testing their detection performances with Hermann’s tortoises. This secretive reptile provides a typical case of threatened Mediterranean species where protection actions are hampered by low detection rates; especially because low population densities increase the risk of false negative results during surveys. The ability to detect and save individuals, for example before destructive land-work, might be crucial. We evaluated the detection ability of dogs to find tortoises with two experiments. First, field trials showed that relative detection rate was three times higher in dogs compared to well-trained humans. Then, and more importantly, the absolute detection rate of dogs to find radio tracked tortoises was excellent: after two trials, dogs rapidly located all the experimental tortoises dissimulated along different field transects. Overall, dogs were very efficient in finding tortoises, especially well-hidden individuals. More generally, the immense potential of trained dogs should be extended to improve the techniques to detect and protect Mediterranean reptiles.

International audience; Understanding the population dynamics of aquatic species and how inter-specific variation in demographic and life history traits influence population dynamics is crucial to define their conservation status and design appropriate protection measures.The abundance and biomass growth rates for 18 common European freshwater fish species were estimated using data spanning 1990-2011 for 546 sites across France. Fish-length trends were assessed using quantile regressions and correlations with life history traits were investigated.Amongst the 18 species, eleven of them have exhibited a significant decline in abundance and 14 species declined in biomass, seven remained stable or exhibited positive abundance growth rates; for four species, biomass was stable or increased. Of the demographic and ecological traits investigated, life-history strategy and maximum length were significantly correlated with species' population growth rates, revealing that the decline mainly concerned large-bodied species with slow life-histories.These results focus on 18 common European species representing 94% of fish captured during the study period within the French national monitoring programme and underline that more attention should be paid to the decline in common species. Population dynamics of widely distributed common species are key drivers of communities and of importance to ecosystem function.This study provides evidence of declines in common European freshwater fish species at a national scale and recommends conservation measures to favour recovery of most declining species. We highlight the crucial value of electrofishing monitoring programmes to assess freshwater fish species population trajectories and to support environmental management and conservation policy based on scientific evidences.

International audience; During the 20th century, yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) populations suffered from a strong decline in western Europe, especially in France. The causes of this decline are potentially multiple, including habitat loss and fragmentation, and climate change. To date, production forests host the largest yellow-bellied toad populations in France. Conservation of this species is thus tightly linked to forest management practices. During the last decade, intensification of forest harvesting led to the increasing systematic removal of ruts, the preferential breeding habitat of yellow-bellied toad in production forests. Enstonement of forest paths and timber storage areas, and the rapid filling of ruts after forest harvesting, are potential causes of decline for this species. Here, we synthetize the results of papers focusing on the impact of forest management practices on yellow-bellied toad population dynamics. We started our review paper with a comparative demographic analysis between populations from riverine habitat and production forest. After highlighting the demographic characteristics of forest populations, we documented the influence of path enstonement and road pavement on yellow-bellied toad dispersal. We also reported the effect of rut patch destruction on adult survival and long-term population viability. In the light of scientific evidences gathered in our synthesis, we concluded that these forest management practices pose a major threat for forest populations viability and persistence. We proposed a set of management practices aimed at better alignment of forestry activities and yellow-bellied toad conservation in French production forests.; Durant le 20ème siècle, les populations de Sonneurs à ventre jaune (Bombina variegata) ont subi un net déclin en Europe de l’Ouest, et en France tout particulièrement. Les causes de cette régression sont possiblement multiples, incluant la perte et la fragmentation d’habitat, ainsi que les changements climatiques. De nos jours, les forêts de production de bois abritent les plus grandes populations de Sonneurs à ventre jaune du territoire. La conservation de cette espèce apparait donc étroitement dépendante des pratiques de gestion forestière. Depuis une dizaine d’années, l’intensification de l’exploitation forestière favorise l’élimination de plus en plus systématique des ornières, lesquelles constituent l’habitat de reproduction préférentiel du Sonneur à ventre jaune en forêt de production. L’empierrement des chemins forestiers et des places de dépôt de bois, ainsi qu’une tendance au comblement rapide des ornières après l’exploitation des parcelles, constituent des causes potentielles de déclin pour cette espèce. Dans cet article, nous effectuons une synthèse des travaux s’intéressant aux impacts des pratiques de gestion forestière sur la dynamique des populations de Sonneurs à ventre jaune en France. Nous débutons par une analyse de démographie comparée entre les populations d’environnements rivulaires et celles de forêts de production. Après avoir mis en évidence les particularités démographiques des populations forestières, nous rapportons les effets de l’empierrement et du goudronnage des chemins forestiers sur la dispersion. Puis, nous documentons l’effet de la destruction des patchs d’ornières sur la survie des adultes et la viabilité à long terme des populations. Sur la base des faits scientifiques rassemblés dans cette synthèse, il résulte que ces pratiques de gestion font courir un risque majeur pour la viabilité des populations en forêt. Nousproposons une série de préconisations de gestion visant à assurer une meilleure adéquation entre les travaux forestiers et la conservation du Sonneur à ventre jaune dans les forêts de production françaises.

Le déclin alarmant des amphibiens de France : L’exemple étayé de la Normandie. Les amphibiens subissent de nombreuses pressions comme la disparition et la dégradation de leurs habitats terrestres et aquatiques, l’introduction d’espèces, les maladies et le changement climatique qui entrainent la disparition ou la régression des populations. De nombreuses évaluations environnementales (e.g. directives européennes, listes rouges, etc.), ou des pratiques de gestion dans des espaces protégés s’appuient sur la connaissance du statut des populations. Dans ce contexte, un consortium (SHF, CPIE, ONF, RNF et CEFE) a développé des protocoles permettant d’évaluer les tendances des communautés (ou d’espèces) d’amphibiens. Contrairement aux approches de type atlas de répartition déjà bien développées en France, ces nouveaux protocoles (dits « POPAmphibien ») s’inscrivent dans le cadre des méthodes d’occupation dynamique de sites qui permettent de modéliser les tendances de l’occurrence dans les sites aquatiques, tout en corrigeant par la probabilité de détection des espèces. Cet article présente les résultats de l’application d’un protocole POPAmphibien « communauté » en Normandie, avec l’objectif de décrire la tendance temporelle d’une communauté d’amphibiens en réalisant trois passages par an sur le terrain qui tiennent compte la phénologie des différentes espèces. Entre 2007 et 2018, 114 aires (secteurs présentant plusieurs sites aquatiques potentiellement colonisés par les amphibiens) comportant 1 255 sites aquatiques ont été suivis avec des méthodes de prospection standardisées. Les tendances des 15 taxons suivis en Normandie montrent une diminution pour neuf d’entre eux (Alyte accoucheur Alytes obstetricans, Crapaud commun/épineux Bufo sp, Grenouille rousse Rana temporaria, Grenouille verte Pelophylax kl. esculentus, Salamandre tachetée Salamandra salamandra, Triton alpestre Ichthyosaura alpestris, Triton crêté Triturus cristatus, Triton palmé Lissotriton helveticus et Triton ponctué Lissotriton vulgaris), une stabilité pour quatre espèces (Crapaud calamite Epidalea calamita, Grenouille rieuse Pelophylax ridibundus, Rainette verte Hyla arborea et Triton marbré Triturus marmoratus) et une augmentation pour deux espèces (Grenouille agile Rana dalmatina et Pélodyte ponctué Pelodytes punctatus). La dégradation des habitats, notamment dans les paysages agricoles et les changements climatiques (assèchement des sites de reproduction) affectent particulièrement les espèces comme la Salamandre tachetée Salamandra salamandra et la Grenouille rousse Rana temporaria. Les mesures de gestion (surcreusement des mares, protection des habitats) apparaissent favorables aux populations de Pélodyte ponctué P. punctatus cantonnées dans les dunes et les marais littoraux, qui sont la plupart du temps sous statut de protection. La Grenouille agile (R. dalmatina) est en progression, notamment en dehors des espaces protégés, probablement en relation avec son expansion vers le nord depuis au moins une quinzaine d’années en lien avec des conditions climatiques locales plus favorables et la présence de micro-habitats refuges. Ces résultats sont les premiers obtenus avec cette méthodologie dont le déploiement à l’échelle nationale permettra des analyses de plus en plus précises sur les facteurs, dont les pratiques de gestion, influençant la dynamique des populations des amphibiens de France.

CrAlN films were synthesized by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The influence of the aluminium content on the microstructure, hardness and the friction coefficient of the CrAlN films have been investigated. Results indicate that all CrAlN coatings present a columnar and dense structure. Also, CrAlN coatings present a better hardness than CrN coating. The increase of Al rate from 3.5 to 11% is accompanied by a decrease of hardness from 28 to 24 GPa and then it increases for an Al rate of 24%. International audience; The alarming decline of amphibians in France: The documented example of Normandy. Amphibians are exposed to numerous pressures such as the disappearance and degradation of their terrestrial and aquatic habitats, the introduction of invasive species, diseases, and climate change, which lead to the disappearance or decline of populations. Many environmental assessments (e.g. European directives, red lists, etc.), or management practices in protected areas are based on the status of populations. In this context, a consortium (SHF, CPIE, ONF, RNF, CEFE) has developed protocols to assess trends in amphibian communities (or target species). Unlike the distribution atlas-type approaches already well developed in France, these new protocols (known as "POPAmphibien") are based on the site occupancy framework that model amphibian occurrence in aquatic sites, while correcting for the probability of species detection. This paper presents the results of the application of a POPAmphibien "community" protocol in Normandy, with the aim of describing the temporal trend of an amphibian community by carrying out three field surveys per year that considering the phenology of the different species. Between 2007 and 2018, 114 areas (sectors presenting several aquatic sites potentially colonised by amphibians) comprising 1255 aquatic sites were monitored using standardised methods. The trends for the 15 taxa monitored in Normandy show a decrease for nine of them (Alytes obstetricans, Bufo sp, Rana temporaria, Pelophylax kl. esculentus, Salamandra salamandra, Ichthyosaura alpestris, Triturus cristatus, Lissotriton helveticus and Lissotriton vulgaris), a stability for four species (Epidalea calamita, Pelophylax ridibundus, Hyla arborea and Triturus marmoratus) and an increase for two species (Rana dalmatina and Pelodytes punctatus). Habitat degradation, particularly in agricultural landscapes, and climate change (drying up of breeding sites) particularly affect species such as Salamandra salamandra and Rana temporaria. Management measures (over digging of ponds, protection of habitats) appear to be favourable to the populations of P. punctatus which are confined to dunes and coastal marshes under protection status. R. dalmatina is on the increase, particularly outside protected areas, probably due to its expansion northwards for at least fifteen yearsin connection with more favourable local climatic conditions and the presence of refuge micro-habitats. International audience; Seabirds are one of the most threatened of all bird groups, with a marked community-wide decline across the last decades. Yet, some seabird species are more resilient than others, and it is essential to study under which conditions even these highly resilient organisms are affected by global changes. Using global location sensors (GLS), demographic and stable isotope analyses, we performed a long-term study of the migration biology and inter-annual survival of northern gannets (Morus bassanus) breeding on Rouzic Island in Brittany, France. Across 2006-2015, our analyses showed that the birds spent the inter-breeding period off Western Europe, in the Mediterranean or off West Africa. There were no inter-annual trends in the use of these different areas, but isotopic analyses suggested food competition between gannets and industrial-scale fisheries. Crucially, we found a precipitous decline in the return rates of birds equipped with GLS, from 90% in 2006-2007 to less than 10% after 2015. This decline was consistent with a marked decrease in inter-annual survival probabilities for ringed adult gannets, from >90% in 2014-2015 to

Open habitat bird species of Southern Massif Central (France) are highly dependent of traditional land uses such as extensive livestock farming. These practices have however largely declined other the last decades. Despite the high conservation value of these species at the national level, little is known about their recent trends in this region. In this study, we aimed to monitor changes in the occurrence of bird species of southern Massif Central. Our study relied on 167 point-counts repeated exactly at the same locations in 1995 and 2017. We specifically focused on four target species related to open habitat: the Tawny Pipit, the Ortolan Bunting, the Woodlark, and the Dartford Warbler. We observed a strong negative trend for species strongly associated with open habitat, while forest and generalist species showed stable or positive trends. This study is the first to quantify trends in bird occurrence in this study area based on repeatable and standardized methods. Alarming trends observed for open habitat specialist species call for the urgent need to implement conservation actions for thèse species and their habitats throughout the study area
