Accurate stratospheric temperature observations are crucial for weather forecasts and climate change studies. This paper discusses a precise measurement method for the stratospheric temperature profile using narrow bands with ultra-high spectral resolution from nadir-viewing satellites. First, the CO2 absorption band around 15 μm is selected as the major sounding source by the calculation and analysis of the temperature Jacobian and the atmospheric molecular spectra. Next, the influence of spectral resolution, spectral range and instrumental noise on the sounding capability is analyzed, and the sounding feasibility of the single spectral band and multiple spectral bands is discussed under the condition that the spaceborne long-wave infrared space heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) is selected as suggested sounder onboard the satellite. Finally, the optimal joint-sounding scheme of narrow bands is proposed. The temperature retrieval and validation show that the joint-sounding of two discontinuous narrow bands can realize the high precision measurement of the stratospheric temperature profile for the given spectral resolution, spectral range, and instrumental noise. When the sounder adopts two narrow bands (the regions of 666.87–676.44 cm−1 and 683.58–693.15 cm−1) and a spectral resolution of 0.03 cm−1, the retrieval accuracy (RMSE) is about 0.9 K over a pressure range of 200 to 0.7 hPa (11.5–50 km). This study will provide technical preparation for high-precision and low-cost satellite sounder design for stratospheric temperature observations.

Heterosis, which describes the superior vigor and yield of F1 hybrids with respect to their parents, is observed in many rice hybrid crosses. The exploitation of heterosis is a great leap in the history of rice breeding. With advances in genomics and genetics, high-resolution mapping and functional identification of heterosis-associated loci have been performed in rice. Here we summarize advances in understanding the genetic basis of grain yield heterosis in hybrid rice and provide a vision for the genetic study and breeding application of rice heterosis in the future.

Here, the authors assemble the genome of diploid oat Avena strigosa, reveal the structure and organization of the consecutive genes, characterize the last two missing pathway steps, and investigate the origin of the pathway in cereals.

Abstract Background Orthopedic surgery for cervical torticollis poses potential threat to airway management both in tracheal intubation and extubation. Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a complex syndrome of osseous and visceral anomalies. The anatomical characteristics of KFS might have significant implications for airway management. Case presentation This is a rare case of an 8-year-old boy presenting with osseous torticollis, congenital occipito-atlantal deformity, congenital basilar invagination and KFS undergone elective torticollis correction surgery. Though with difficulty, tracheal intubation was successfully performed. Extubation failed twice on postoperative day 2 and 10, and required tracheostomy. Based on radiological findings, we speculated that prolonged airway edema accounted for the main reason of the failed extubation, the hypertrophic tonsil and occipito-cervical fusion resulted in reduced oropharyngeal space and limited cervical range of motion. Moreover, the Chiari malformation and KFS complicated the airway condition and lead to prolonged airway obstruction. The tracheostomy casing was removed 1 month later. Conclusions Cautions should be taken in extubation of pediatric patients undergone major osseous torticollis surgery. Reintubation should be prepared in case of failed extubation. Severe post-operative airway edema, complicated with hypertrophic tonsil, the structural abnormalities in the oropharyngeal cavity, and occipito-cervical deformities constituted the decreased oropharyngeal space and resulted in failed extubation. For severe airway compromise and prolonged intubation, tracheostomy should be considered.

The genus Miscanthus has great potential for bio-energy production due to its high biomass yield and strong stress resistance. Here, the authors report the genome assembly of the diploid M. lutarioriparius, showing it has an allotetraploid origin and an expanded number of genes in families related to stress resistance.

AimsWe performed a meta-analysis to indirectly compare the treatment effectiveness of balloon angioplasty and stenting for patients with intracranial arterial stenosis.MethodsLiterature searches were performed in well-known databases to identify eligible studies published before January 04, 2021. The incidence of restenosis, transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, death, and dissection after balloon angioplasty or stenting were pooled. An indirect comparison of balloon angioplasty vs. stenting was performed, and the ratios of incidence (RIs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the random-effects model.Results120 studies that recruited 10,107 patients with intracranial arterial stenosis were included. The pooled incidence of restenosis after balloon angioplasty and stenting were 13% (95%CI: 8-17%) and 11% (95%CI: 9-13%), respectively, with no significant difference between them (RI: 1.18; 95%CI: 0.78–1.80; P = 0.435). Moreover, the pooled incidence of TIA after balloon angioplasty and stenting was 3% (95%CI: 0–6%) and 4% (95%CI: 3%-5%), and no significant difference was observed (RI: 0.75; 95%CI: 0.01–58.53; P = 0.897). The pooled incidence of stroke after balloon angioplasty and stenting was 7% (95%CI: 5–9%) and 8% (95%CI: 7–9%), respectively, and the difference between groups was found to be statistically insignificant (RI: 0.88; 95%CI: 0.64–1.20; P = 0.413). Additionally, the pooled incidence of death after balloon angioplasty and stenting was 2% (95%CI: 1–4%) and 2% (95%CI: 1–2%), with no significant difference between groups (RI: 1.00; 95%CI: 0.44–2.27; P = 1.000). Finally, the pooled incidence of dissection after balloon angioplasty and stenting was 13% (95%CI: 5–22%) and 3% (95%CI: 2–5%), respectively, and balloon angioplasty was associated with a higher risk of dissection than that with stenting for patients with intracranial arterial stenosis (RI: 4.33; 95%CI: 1.81–10.35; P = 0.001).ConclusionThis study found that the treatment effectiveness of balloon angioplasty and stenting were similar for patients with symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis.

10-Hydroxydec-2-enoic acid (10-HDA), an unsaturated hydroxyl fatty acid from the natural food royal jelly, can protect against cell and tissue damage, yet the underlying mechanisms are still unexplored. We hypothesized that the neutralization of the hydroxyl free radical (•OH), the most reactive oxygen species, is an important factor underlying the cytoprotective effect of 10-HDA. In this study, we found that the •OH scavenging rate by 10-HDA (2%, g/ml) was more than 20%, which was achieved through multiple-step oxidization of the –OH group and C=C bond of 10-HDA. Moreover, 10-HDA significantly enhanced the viability of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) damaged by •OH (P < 0.01), significantly attenuated •OH-derived malondialdehyde production that represents cellular lipid peroxidation (P < 0.05), and significantly increased the glutathione levels in •OH-stressed VSMCs (P < 0.05), indicating the role of 10-HDA in reducing •OH-induced cytotoxicity. Further proteomic analyses of VSMCs identified 195 proteins with decreased expression by •OH challenge that were upregulated by 10-HDA rescue and were primarily involved in protein synthesis (such as translation, protein transport, ribosome, and RNA binding) and energy metabolism (such as fatty acid degradation and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis). Taken together, these findings indicate that 10-HDA can effectively promote cell survival by antagonizing •OH-induced injury in VSMCs. To the best of our knowledge, our results provide the first concrete evidence that 10-HDA-scavenged •OH could be a potential pharmacological application for maintaining vascular health.

Purpose: The first clinical biology-guided radiation therapy (BgRT) system—RefleXion TM X1—was installed and commissioned for clinical use at our institution. This study aimed at evaluating the treatment plan quality and delivery efficiency for IMRT/SBRT cases without PET guidance. Methods: A total of 42 patient plans across 6 cancer sites (conventionally fractionated lung, head, and neck, anus, prostate, brain, and lung SBRT) planned with the Eclipse TM treatment planning system (TPS) and treated with either a TrueBeam ® or Trilogy ® were selected for this retrospective study. For each Eclipse VMAT plan, 2 corresponding plans were generated on the X1 TPS with 10 mm jaws (X1-10mm) and 20 mm jaws (X1-20mm) using our institutional planning constraints. All clinically relevant metrics in this study, including PTV D95%, PTV D2%, Conformity Index (CI), R50, organs-at-risk (OAR) constraints, and beam-on time were analyzed and compared between 126 VMAT and RefleXion plans using paired t -tests. Results: All but 3 planning metrics were either equivalent or superior for the X1-10mm plans as compared to the Eclipse VMAT plans across all planning sites investigated. The Eclipse VMAT and X1-10mm plans generally achieved superior plan quality and sharper dose fall-off superior/inferior to targets as compared to the X1-20mm plans, however, the X1-20mm plans were still considered acceptable for treatment. On average, the required beam-on time increased by a factor of 1.6 across all sites for X1-10mm compared to X1-20mm plans. Conclusions: Clinically acceptable IMRT/SBRT treatment plans were generated with the X1 TPS for both the 10 mm and 20 mm jaw settings.

Microbes play an essential role in the restoration of degraded coastal wetlands. However, few studies have focused on the role of key bacteria in the restoration process. Here, Suaeda salsa was planted to recover the biodiversity in the degraded Beidaihe coastal wetland. We monitored omics and soil environmental factors to understand the complex relationship between the bacterial community and wetland health during the restoration period. After planting S. salsa in the degraded area, the soil quality was improved in the later stage of restoration (LPR). Bacterial α-diversity increased with restoration and was positively correlated with TOC. Proteobacteria is the dominant bacterial phylum during the restoration period, and Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Gemmatimonadetes, and Acidobacteria were sensitive to the planting restoration. Random forest analysis picked 30 key OTUs, showing the key bacterial variation of successful restoration. The result indicated that the sum of the relative abundances of key bacterial OTUs was more than 2% in the health wetland. The β-diversity showed that the growth of S. salsa reshaped the soil bacterial community structure and function in the LPR, which recovered to the level in the control area. Putative biogeochemical functions showed that symbionts and aromatic compound degradation were dominant bacterial functions in the growth period of S. salsa. Our study proposed a new indicator to assess wetland health and the planting restoration of S. salsa increased bacteria groups with the ability of symbionts and aromatic compound degradation in the Beidaihe coastal wetland. This study expanded our knowledge of coastal wetland restoration and its ecological contributions.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant cancer. Metastasis plays a critical role in tumor progression, and vascular invasion is considered one of the most crucial factors for HCC metastasis. However, comprehensive analysis focusing on competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) and immune infiltration in the vascular invasion of HCC is lacking.Methods: The gene expression profiles of 321 samples, including 210 primary HCC cases and 111 HCC cases with vascular invasion, were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma project, and used in identifying significant differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), and mRNAs (DEmRNAs). The RNAs associated with vascular invasion were used in constructing a ceRNA network. A multigene-based risk signature was constructed using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm. We detected the fractions of 28 immune cell types in HCC through single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA). Finally, the relationship between the ceRNA network and immune cells was determined through correlation analysis and used in clarifying the potential mechanism involved in vascular invasion.Results: Overall, 413 DElncRNAs, 27 DEmiRNAs, and 397 DEmRNAs were recognized in HCC. A specific ceRNA network based on the interaction among 3 lncRNA–miRNA pairs and 24 miRNA–mRNA pairs were established. A ceRNA-based prognostic signature was constructed and used in dividing samples into high- and low-risk subgroups. The signature showed significant efficacy; its 3- and 5-year areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 0.712 and 0.653, respectively. ceRNA and ssGSEA integration analysis demonstrated that PART1 (p = 0, R = −0.33) and CDK5R2 (p = 0.01, R = −0.15) were negatively correlated to natural killer cells.Conclusion: This study demonstrated that vascular invasion in HCC might be related to PART1, and its role in regulating CDK5R2 and NK cells. A nomogram was developed to predict the prognosis of patients with HCC and demonstrated the value of the ceRNA network and tumor-infiltrating immune cells value in improving personalized management.

Abstract Background OryzaGenome ( http://viewer.shigen.info/oryzagenome21detail/index.xhtml ), a feature within Oryzabase ( https://shigen.nig.ac.jp/rice/oryzabase/ ), is a genomic database for wild Oryza species that provides comparative and evolutionary genomics approaches for the rice research community. Results Here we release OryzaGenome2.1, the first major update of OryzaGenome. The main feature in this version is the inclusion of newly sequenced genotypes and their meta-information, giving a total of 217 accessions of 19 wild Oryza species (O. rufipogon, O. barthii, O. longistaminata, O. meridionalis, O. glumaepatula, O. punctata, O. minuta, O. officinalis, O. rhizomatis, O. eichingeri, O. latifolia, O. alta, O. grandiglumis, O. australiensis, O. brachyantha, O. granulata, O. meyeriana, O. ridleyi, and O. longiglumis). These 19 wild species belong to 9 genome types (AA, BB, CC, BBCC, CCDD, EE, FF, GG, and HHJJ), representing wide genomic diversity in the genus. Using the genotype information, we analyzed the genome diversity of Oryza species. Other features of OryzaGenome facilitate the use of information on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between O. sativa and its wild progenitor O. rufipogon in rice research, including breeding as well as basic science. For example, we provide Variant Call Format (VCF) files for genome-wide SNPs of 33 O. rufipogon accessions against the O. sativa reference genome, IRGSP1.0. In addition, we provide a new SNP Effect Table function, allowing users to identify SNPs or small insertion/deletion polymorphisms in the 33 O. rufipogon accessions and to search for the effect of these polymorphisms on protein function if they reside in the coding region (e.g., are missense or nonsense mutations). Furthermore, the SNP Viewer for 446 O. rufipogon accessions was updated by implementing new tracks for possible selective sweep regions and highly mutated regions that were potentially exposed to selective pressures during the process of domestication. Conclusion OryzaGenome2.1 focuses on comparative genomic analysis of diverse wild Oryza accessions collected around the world and on the development of resources to speed up the identification of critical trait-related genes, especially from O. rufipogon. It aims to promote the use of genotype information from wild accessions in rice breeding and potential future crop improvements. Diverse genotypes will be a key resource for evolutionary studies in Oryza, including polyploid biology.

Abstract Introduction To explore the prevalence of depressive symptoms and the associated risk factors in frontline nurses under COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from February 20, 2020 to March 20, 2020 and involved 562 frontline nurses. The effective response rate was 87.68%. After propensity score matched, there were 498 participants left. Extensive characteristics, including demographics, dietary habits, life-related factors, work-related factors, and psychological factors were collected based on a self-reported questionnaire. Specific scales measured the levels of sleep quality, physical activity, depressive symptoms, perceived organization support and psychological capital. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were determined by binary paired logistic regression. Results Of the nurses enrolled in the study, 50.90% had depressive symptoms. Three independent risk factors were identified: poor sleep quality (OR = 1.608, 95% CI: 1.384–1.896), lower optimism of psychological capital (OR = 0.879, 95% CI: 0.805–0.960) and no visiting friend constantly (OR = 0.513, 95% CI: 0.286–0.920). Conclusions This study revealed a considerable high prevalence of depressive symptoms in frontline nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak, and identified three risk factors, which were poor sleep quality, lower optimism of psychological capital, and no visiting friend constantly. Protecting mental health of nurses is important for COVID-19 pandemic control and their wellbeing. These findings enrich the existing theoretical model of depression and demonstrated a critical need for additional strategies that could address the mental health in frontline nurses for policymakers.

Abstract Background Neuroinflammation and immune responses occurring minutes to hours after stroke are associated with brain injury after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), as a master coregulator of gene expression in mitochondrial biogenesis, was found to be transiently upregulated in microglia after AIS. However, the role of microglial PGC-1α in poststroke immune modulation remains unknown. Methods PGC-1α expression in microglia from human and mouse brain samples following ischemic stroke was first determined. Subsequently, we employed transgenic mice with microglia-specific overexpression of PGC-1α for middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The morphology and gene expression profile of microglia with PGC-1α overexpression were evaluated. Downstream inflammatory cytokine production and NLRP3 activation were also determined. ChIP-Seq analysis was performed to detect PGC-1α-binding sites in microglia. Autophagic and mitophagic activity was further monitored by immunofluorescence staining. Unc-51-like autophagy activating kinase 1 (ULK1) expression was evaluated under the PGC-1α interaction with ERRα. Finally, pharmacological inhibition and genomic knockdown of ULK1 were performed to estimate the role of ULK1 in mediating mitophagic activity after ischemic stroke. Results PGC-1α expression was shortly increased after ischemic stroke, not only in human brain samples but also in mouse brain samples. Microglia-specific PGC-1α overexpressing mice exhibited significantly decreased neurologic deficits after ischemic injury, with reduced NLRP3 activation and proinflammatory cytokine production. ChIP-Seq analysis and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that mitophagy was significantly enhanced. PGC-1α significantly promoted autophagic flux and induced autolysosome formation. More specifically, the autophagic clearance of mitochondria was enhanced by PGC-1α regulation, indicating the important role of mitophagy. Pharmacological inhibition or knockdown of ULK1 expression impaired autophagic/mitophagic activity, thus abolishing the neuroprotective effects of PGC-1α. Conclusions Mechanistically, in AIS, PGC-1α promotes autophagy and mitophagy through ULK1 and reduces NLRP3 activation. Our findings indicate that microglial PGC-1α may be a promising therapeutic target for AIS.

Abstract Background BRAFV600E mutation is the most common mutation in thyroid cancer. It strongly activates MAPK/ERK pathway and indicates an invasive subtype of thyroid cancer. PLX4032 is a selective oral inhibitor of the BRAFV600 kinase although with limited effect in treating this panel of thyroid cancer, due to the feedback activation of MAPK/ERK as well as PI3K/AKT pathways. It was investigated that Vitamin C plays a positive role in inhibiting these pathways in thyroid cancer. However, whether Vitamin C could enhance the antitumor effect of PLX4032 remains largely unclear. Methods The antitumor efficacy of combination therapy with PLX4032 and Vitamin C on BRAFMT thyroid cancer cell was assessed by the MTT assay, EdU assay and colony formation, Chou-Talalay way was employed to analyze the synergistic effect. Flow cytometry were employed to assess cells’ apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in response to combination therapy. Xenograft models were used to test its in vivo antitumor activity. Western blot and IHC were applied to investigate the mechanism underlying synergistic effect. Results PLX4032 or Vitamin C monotherapy was mildly effective in treating BRAFMT thyroid cancer cell and xenografts model. The combination therapy significantly inhibited cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth in nude mice, and induced cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest compared to either monotherapy. PLX4032 monotherapy induced feedback activation of MAPK/ERK as well as PI3K/AKT pathway; while combination therapy significantly relieved this feedback. Conclusion Vitamin C promotes the antitumor effect of PLX4032 in BRAFMT thyroid cancer cell and xenografts model via relieving the feedback activation of MAPK/ERK as well as PI3K/AKT pathway. PLX4032/Vitamin C combination may be a potential therapeutic approach to treat BRAFMT thyroid cancer.

As of today, the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system has been rolled out in many countries and the number of 5G subscribers already reaches a very large scale. It is time for academia and industry to shift their attention towards the next generation. At this crossroad, an overview of the current state of the art and a vision of future communications are definitely of interest. This article thus aims to provide a comprehensive survey to draw a picture of the sixth generation (6G) system in terms of drivers, use cases, usage scenarios, requirements, key performance indicators (KPIs), architecture, and enabling technologies. First, we attempt to answer the question of “Is there any need for 6G?” by shedding light on its key driving factors, in which we predict the explosive growth of mobile traffic until 2030, and envision potential use cases and usage scenarios. Second, the technical requirements of 6G are discussed and compared with those of 5G with respect to a set of KPIs in a quantitative manner. Third, the state-of-the-art 6G research efforts and activities from representative institutions and countries are summarized, and a tentative roadmap of definition, specification, standardization, and regulation is projected. Then, we identify a dozen of potential technologies and introduce their principles, advantages, challenges, and open research issues. Finally, the conclusions are drawn to paint a picture of “What 6G may look like?.” This survey is intended to serve as an enlightening guideline to spur interests and further investigations for subsequent research and development of 6G communications systems.

Abstract In this study, sediments were collected from two different sites in the deep-sea hydrothermal region of the South Atlantic Ocean. Two microbial enrichment cultures (H7S and H11S), which were enriched from the sediments collected at two sample sites, could effectively degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. The bacterial diversity was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing method. The petroleum degradation ability were evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and gravimetric analysis. We found that the dominant oil-degrading bacteria of enrichment cultures from the deep-sea hydrothermal area belonged to the genera Pseudomonas, Nitratireductor, Acinetobacter, and Brevundimonas. After a 14-day degradation experiment, the enrichment culture H11S, which was obtained near a hydrothermal vent, exhibited a higher degradation efficiency for alkanes (95%) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (88%) than the enrichment culture H7S. Interestingly, pristane and phytane as biomarkers were degraded up to 90% and 91% respectively by the enrichment culture H11S, and six culturable oil-degrading bacterial strains were isolated. Acinetobacter junii strain H11S-25, Nitratireductor sp. strain H11S-31 and Pseudomonas sp. strain H11S-28 were used at a density ratio of 95:4:1 to construct high-efficiency oil-degrading consortium H. After a three-day biodegradation experiment, consortium H showed high degradation efficiencies of 74.2% and 65.7% for total alkanes and PAHs, respectively. The degradation efficiency of biomarkers such as pristane and high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (such as CHR) reached 84.5% and 80.48%, respectively. The findings of this study indicate that the microorganisms in the deep-sea hydrothermal area are potential resources for degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. Consortium H, which was artificially constructed, showed a highly efficient oil-degrading capacity and has significant application prospects in oil pollution bioremediation.

Previous studies have shown that the effectiveness of superfine tailings cemented paste backfill (SCPB) is influenced by multiple factors. To optimize the filling effect of superfine tailings, the effects of different factors on the fluidity, mechanical properties, and microstructure of SCPB were investigated. Before configuring the SCPB, the effect of cyclone operating parameters on the concentration and yield of superfine tailings was first investigated and the optimal cyclone operating parameters were obtained. The settling characteristics of superfine tailings under the optimum cyclone parameters were further analyzed, and the effect of the flocculant on its settling characteristics was shown in the block selection. Then the SCPB was prepared using cement and superfine tailings, and a series of experiments were carried out to investigate its working characteristics. The flow test results showed that the slump and slump flow of SCPB slurry decreased with increasing mass concentration, which was mainly because the higher the mass concentration, the higher the viscosity and yield stress of the slurry, and thus the worse its fluidity. The strength test results showed that the strength of SCPB was mainly affected by the curing temperature, curing time, mass concentration, and cement-sand ratio, among which the curing temperature had the most significant effect on the strength. The microscopic analysis of the block selection showed the mechanism of the effect of the curing temperature on the strength of SCPB, i.e., the curing temperature mainly affected the strength of SCPB by affecting the hydration reaction rate of SCPB. The slow hydration process of SCPB in a low temperature environment leads to fewer hydration products and a loose structure, which is the fundamental reason for the strength reduction of SCPB. The results of the study have some guiding significance for the efficient application of SCPB in alpine mines.

Knowledge about the growth vigor of grapevine rootstocks is required for scion-based rootstock selection and rootstock breeding. We performed this trial aiming to evaluate the multiplication and growth vigor of several rootstocks. Thirty-one rootstock genotypes were compared on their multiplication characteristics, phenological periods, and growth indicators across three consecutive seasons. The results suggested that the cuttings of most rootstocks had callus-forming indices (CFIs) over 0.5 except for ‘188-08’ (0.28). The rooting rate of ‘420A’ was 5%, while that of the rest of the rootstocks was greater than 48%. The internode lengths of the one-year-old vines were positively correlated with those (as well as cane lengths and pruning weights) of the adult vines. These rootstocks were grouped into three clusters based on the growth measurements across three seasons. Eight combinations of genetic backgrounds showed various effects on the growth indicators. The high-vigor cluster includes ‘1103P’, ‘5BB’, ‘225Ru’, etc.; the medium-vigor cluster includes ‘Dogridge’, ‘101-14M’, ‘Fercal’, etc.; and the low-vigor cluster includes ‘Gloire’, ‘3309C’, ‘Ganzin1’, etc. The Vitis berlandieri parentage showed a higher vigor heredity, while the V. riparia showed a lower vigor heredity. These findings would contribute to rootstock nursery construction and provide references for vigor-based rootstock selection for grafts and parent selection for rootstock breeding.

Few studies have examined the association between greenness exposure and birth outcomes. This study aims to identify critical exposure time windows during preconception and pregnancy for the association between greenness exposure and birth weight. A cohort of 13 890 pregnant women and newborns in Shanghai, China from 2016–2019 were included in the study. We assessed greenness exposure using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) during the preconception and gestational periods, and evaluated the association with term birthweight, birthweight z -score, small-for-gestational age, and large-for-gestational age using linear and logistic regressions adjusting for key maternal and newborn covariates. Ambient temperature, relative humidity, ambient levels of fine particles (PM _2.5 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO _2 ) assessed during the same period were adjusted for as sensitivity analyses. Furthermore, we explored the potential different effects by urbanicity and park accessibility through stratified analysis. We found that higher greenness exposure at the second trimester of pregnancy and averaged exposure during the entire pregnancy were associated with higher birthweight and birthweight Z -score. Specifically, a 0.1 unit increase in second trimester averaged NDVI value was associated with an increase in birthweight of 10.2 g (95% CI: 1.8–18.5 g) and in birthweight Z -score of 0.024 (0.003–0.045). A 0.1 unit increase in an averaged NDVI during the entire pregnancy was associated with 10.1 g (95% CI: 1.0–19.2 g) increase in birthweight and 0.025 (0.001–0.048) increase in birthweight Z -score. Moreover, the associations were larger in effect size among urban residents than suburban residents and among residents without park accessibility within 500 m compared to those with park accessibility within 500 m. Our findings suggest that increased greenness exposure, particularly during the second trimester, may be beneficial to birth weight in a metropolitan area.

F-actin is of critical importance in oocyte meiotic maturation. Actin assembly and its dynamics are mainly regulated by actin nucleation factors. The actin-related protein complex 2/3 (Arp2/3) is responsible for the organization of F-actin filaments. However, the role of Arp2/3 complex in goat oocytes has not been fully elucidated. Our findings demonstrate that Arp2/3 complex activity is necessary for the maturation of goat oocytes. The Arp2/3 complex-specific inhibitor CK666 impairs the maturation of goat oocytes and alters the genes associated with cumulus expansion, both of which suggest that normal meiosis is affected. Arp2, one of the subunits of the Arp2/3 complex, was found to be mainly accumulated at the oocyte cortex and to co-localize with F-actin during goat oocyte maturation in our results. Thus, we further investigated the cytoskeleton dynamics and found that Arp2/3 complex inhibition disrupts the F-actin assembly and spindle organization. Further analysis revealed that, in addition to direct effects on the cytoskeleton, Arp2/3 complex could also induce ROS accumulation and oxidative stress by disrupting mitochondrial distribution and function, ultimately increasing the rate of early apoptosis in goat oocytes. Our study provides evidence that the Arp2/3 complex is a key regulator of goat oocyte maturation through its regulation of the cytoskeleton dynamics and mitochondrial function.

The stability of the cemented paste backfill roof (CPB roof) is critical to safe production in mines using the underhand drift cut-and-fill stopping. To investigate the scientific and reasonable design method of key parameters (size and strength) of the CPB roof and the stress state of the CPB roof during the mining process, field measurements were carried out with Jinchuan Group’s third mining area as the engineering background. Based on the measurement results, a mechanics model was constructed based on the thick plate theory. The field measurement results show that the overlying load on the CPB roof tends to increase first and then decrease with the gradual mining of the stope, and the maximum overlying load values of the two CPB roofs measured are 0.240 MPa and 0.244 MPa, respectively. With the gradual mining of the stope, the deformation of the CPB roof shows a trend of increasing first and then stabilizing. Based on the thick plate theory, the stress model of the CPB roof is constructed, and the error between the calculation results of the model and the field measurement results does not exceed 5%. Applying the research results to the three mines of Jinchuan Group, the span of the stope can be expanded from 5 m to 6 m under the existing strength standard of the filling body, which can increase its mining capacity by 20%. This study is the first to measure the overlying load and the tensile stress value on the CPB roof, which is an important guideline for related theoretical research.

Background This study investigated the prognostic impact of (neo‐)adjuvant radiation therapies in early stage esophageal cancer. Methods A retrospective analysis using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was conducted from 2004 to 2016. Patients with pathologically staged T1‐4N0M0 esophageal cancer were divided into two treatment groups: (i) neoadjuvant radiotherapy followed by surgery; and (ii) upfront esophagectomy followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. Propensity scored match and Cox proportional hazards model were used to identify covariates associated with overall survival and cancer‐specific survival. Results There were 821 patients selected, of whom 588 (71.6%) received neoadjuvant radiotherapy and 233 (28.4%) received adjuvant radiotherapy. The effect of Ti/Al ratio on the elemental partitioning in the Ni2CoFeCrTixAly high entropy alloy was studied by atom probe tomography (APT). The APT results indicate that the γ′ nanoparticles have a composition of (NiCoFeCr)3TiAl which is independent of Ti/Al ratio. The effect of Ti/Al ratio on the partitioning behaviors of Fe and Cr are significantly different from that of Co. The decreasing of Ti/Al ratio significantly enhanced the incorporation of Fe and Cr into the γ′ nanoparticles. However, the concentration of Co in the γ′ nanoparticles declined with the decrease of Ti/Al ratio.

BackgroundIntravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy have been approved for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, only a minority of patients received these treatments in China. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tirofiban in patients with AIS who were not undergoing early recanalization treatments.MethodsPatients with mild-to-moderate stroke [National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, 4–15] were enrolled in this study. Patients due to cardiogenic embolism were excluded. Eligible patients within 12 h from symptom onset were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive tirofiban (a loading dose of 0.4 μg/kg/min over 30 min and a maintenance dose of 0.1 μg/kg/min up to 48 h) followed by regular treatment or to receive regular treatment (aspirin at a dose of 100 mg per day for 90 days) (control). The primary outcome was the proportion of favorable functional outcomes at 90 days [defined as the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 0–2]. The secondary outcomes included a shift in the distribution of the mRS scores at 90 days and the NIHSS score at 24 h and 7 days. The primary safety outcome was symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) within 7 days after tirofiban treatment.ResultsA total of 380 eligible patients were randomly assigned to the tirofiban group (n = 190) or the control group (n = 190). The proportion of favorable functional outcomes was higher in the tirofiban group (79.1%) than that in the control group (67.8%) at 90 days [odds ratio (OR), 1.80; 95% CI, 1.12–2.90; p = 0.0155]. An improvement was also observed in the overall distribution of the 90-day mRS scores (adjusted common OR, 2.31; 95% CI, 1.58–3.39; p < 0.0001). Additionally, the median NIHSS score was lower in the tirofiban group than in the control group at 7 days (3 vs. 5, p < 0.0001). Next, we observed that the occurrence of sICH did not differ between the two groups.ConclusionOur trial supports that tirofiban was safe and effective and might be a remedial treatment for patients with AIS who did not receive recanalization treatments.Clinical Trial Registrationhttp://www.chictr.org.cn/, identifier: ChiCTR2000031297.

Varroa destructor is a major pathogenic driver of the Western honeybee colony losses globally. Understanding the developmental regulation of V. destructor is critical to develop effective control measures. Development is a complex biological process regulated by numerous genes and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs); however, the underlying regulation of lncRNAs in the development of V. destructor remains unknown. In this study, we analyzed the RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data derived from the four stages of female V. destructor in the reproductive phase (i.e., egg, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult). The identified differentially expressed mRNAs and lncRNAs exhibited a stage-specific pattern during developmental transitions. Further functional enrichment established that fat digestion and absorption, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway play key roles in the maturation of female V. destructor. Moreover, the lncRNAs and mRNAs of some pivotal genes were significantly upregulated at the deutonymph stage, such as cuticle protein 65/6.4/63/38 and mucin 5AC, suggesting that deutonymph is the key stage of metamorphosis development and pathogen resistance acquisition for female V. destructor. Our study provides novel insights into a foundational understanding of V. destructor biology.

BackgroundBone mineral density (BMD) loss is a major complication of menopause, and this loss is closely associated with Fat mass (FM). The relationship between FM, fat distribution (FD), and BMD in postmenopausal women, however, remains incompletely understood. The present study was thus developed to explore these associations between body fat accumulation, FD, and BMD among non-obese postmenopausal women over the age of 60.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional analysis of 357 healthy postmenopausal women between the ages of 60.2 and 86.7 years. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was utilized to measure total and regional BMD as well as fat-related parameters including total FM, android and gynoid fat, body fat percentage (BF%), and total lean mass (LM) for all subjects. The android-to-gynoid fat ratio (AOI) was used to assess FD. Pearson’s correlation testing and multiple regression analyses were used to explore relationships among AOI, LM, FM, and BMD.ResultsBoth LM and FM were positively correlated with total and regional BMD in univariate analysis (all P < 0.01), whereas BMD was not significantly associated with AOI in any analyzed site other than the head. Multivariate linear regression models corrected for age, height, and years post-menopause, revealed a sustained independent positive relationship between FM and BMD (standard β range: 0.141 – 0.343, P < 0.01). The relationship between FM and BMD was unaffected by adjustment for LM (standard β range: 0.132 – 0.258, P < 0.01), whereas AOI had an adverse impact on BMD at most analyzed skeletal sites (total body, hip, femoral neck, arm, leg, and head) (standard β range: −0.093 to −0.232, P < 0.05). These findings were unaffected by using BF% in place of FM (standard β range: −0.100 to −0.232, P < 0.05).ConclusionsIn this cohort of non-obese postmenopausal women over the age of 60 from China, total FM was positively associated with BMD, while AOI was negatively correlated with BMD. As such, a combination of proper weight gain and the control of central obesity may benefit the overall bone health of women after menopause.

The aim of the study was to (i) use an clustering analysis method to classify and identify native and foreign basketball players into similar groups based on game-related statistics; (ii) use the Pearson’s Chi-square test to identify the key clusters that affect whether a team enters the playoffs; and (iii) use the classification tree analysis to stimulate the prediction of team ability and the construction of the team roster. The sample consisted of 422 foreign players and 1,775 native players across 9 seasons from 2011 to 2019. The clustering process allowed for the identification of nine native and six foreign player performance profiles. In addition, two clusters (p < 0.001, ES = 0.33; p < 0.001, ES = 0.28) of native players and one cluster (p < 0.05, ES = 0.16) of foreign players were identified that had a significant impact on team ability. These results provide alternative references for basketball staff concerning the process of evaluating native and foreign player performance in the Chinese Basketball Association.

Hippocampal neuronal damage likely underlies cognitive impairment in vascular dementia (VaD). PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) is a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. However, the role and the precise mechanism of how PGC-1α alleviates hippocampal neuronal injury remain unknown. To address this question, HT-22 cells, an immortalized hippocampal neuron cell line, with or without PGC-1α overexpression were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), which mimics the circumstance of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in VaD. After OGD, cell viability was assessed using the MTS assay. The mitochondrial function and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were both detected. ChIP-Seq analysis was employed to discover the underlying molecular mechanism of PGC-1α-mediated neuroprotective effects. Our results showed that mitochondrial membrane potentials were increased and ROS production was decreased in PGC-1α overexpressing cells, which increased cell viability. The further bioinformatics analysis from ChIP-Seq data indicated that PGC-1α may participate in the regulation of apoptosis, autophagy, and mitophagy pathways in HT-22 cells. We found that PGC-1α promoted the LC3-II formation and reduced the neuronal apoptosis determined by TUNEL staining. In addition, PGC-1α upregulated the expressions of mitochondrial antioxidants, including SOD2, Trx2, and Prx3. In summary, our findings indicate that PGC-1α may attenuate OGD-induced hippocampal neuronal damage by regulating multiple mechanisms, like autophagy and mitochondrial function. Thus, PGC-1α may be a potential therapeutic target for hippocampal damage associated with cognitive impairment.

Background The impact of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) on early stage esophageal cancer is unknown. Here, we compared the outcomes after esophagectomy alone or nCRT plus surgery for clinically staged node‐negative esophageal cancer. Methods We searched the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database for patients with clinically node‐negative (cN0) esophageal cancer from 2004 to 2016 who underwent surgery alone or nCRT plus surgery. The microstructures and tribological properties of CoCrFeMoNi high entropy alloy (HEA) before and after sulfurization were compared and discussed in the present study. The results showed that the CoCrFeMoNi HEA was mainly composed of FCC solid solution. After being sulfurized at 260℃ for 2 h, the FeS/MoS2 multisulfides solid lubricant films with a thickness of approximately 5.0 μm were successfully fabricated and well combined with the HEA. The stable friction coefficients and weight losses of the sulfurized HEA (0.15 and 4.25 mg) were decreased obviously than the original HEA (0.47 and 15.1 mg). At the beginning of the friction, the friction coefficient of the sulfurized HEA was easier to reach into stable stage. Because of the synergistic work of FeS and MoS2 lubricant phases, the sulfides boundary lubricant films were formed in the later stage of friction under the wearing condition, which could help the friction system work for longer time under lower friction coefficient. Background Anastomosis is one of the important factors affecting anastomotic complications after esophagectomy, and multiple reports have compared anastomotic complications among various techniques. However, there is insufficient evidence in the literature to definitively recommend one anastomotic technique over another. Method We retrospectively evaluated 34 consecutive patients who underwent an improved totally mechanical side‐to‐side: posterior‐to‐posterior linear stapled (TM‐STS) technique for minimally invasive Ivor Lewis esophagogastric anastomosis, performed by a single surgeon between February 2015 to November 2017. The operative techniques and short‐term outcomes are analyzed in this study. Results There were no conversions to an open approach and a complete resection was achieved in all patients undergoing this improved procedure. During the first half of the series, the median operation time was 355 minutes, ranging from 257 to 480 minutes. Over the second half of this series, the median operation time was reduced to 256 minutes. There were no mortalities or serious postoperative complications. Only one patient (2.9%) had an anastomotic leak, which resolved without intervention. Another patient (2.9%) experienced transient, delayed conduit emptying which upper gastrointestinal radiography determined was due to a mechanical obstruction caused by an abnormally long gastric tube in the chest cavity. Conclusions The results of our study suggest that this improved TM‐STS technique is safe and effective for minimally invasive Ivor Lewis esophagectomy, and can be considered as one of the alternative procedure for patients with lower esophageal as well as Siewert types I/II gastroesophageal junction carcinoma.

An improved analytical model is developed to predict the dynamic response of clamped lightweight sandwich beams with cellular cores subjected to shock loading over the entire span. The clamped face sheets are simplified as a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system, and the core is idealized using the rigid-perfectly-plastic-locking (RPPL) model. Reflection of incident shock wave is considered by incorporating the bending/stretching resistance of the front face sheet and compaction of the core. The model is validated with existing analytical predictions and FE simulation results, with good agreement achieved. Compared with existing analytical models, the proposed model exhibits superiority in two aspects: the deformation resistance of front face sheet during shock wave reflection is taken into account; the effect of pulse shape is considered. In this article, we propose a numerical method to solve the viscous Burgers’ equation in one and two dimensions using the Localized Differential Quadrature (LDQ) scheme. To approximate spatial derivatives, we use the differential quadrature technique locally in a neighborhood of each node using Lagrangian weights and then march the numerical solution in time using the Taylor’s series approximation. Convergence analysis is done by observing that the error between the numerical and exact solutions goes to zero as the number of subdivisions of the spatial domain increases. The localization technique of the differential quadrature method maintains the stability and accuracy of our proposed numerical scheme. We test our proposed numerical scheme using LDQ for several examples. In comparison with several other known methods in the literature, our numerical results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method and demonstrate their advantages over other known methods in terms of accuracy and computational complexity.

Prenatal exposure to ambient PM2.5 has been proved to be related to pregnant women’s physical health and birth outcomes. However, the damage from air pollution on pregnant women’s mental health has not been fully discussed. A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the effects of PM2.5 exposure and risk perception on the mental stress of pregnant women. A total of 605 pregnant women, including 403 high symptoms of stress cases and 202 matched controls, were recruited from January 2018 to December 2018 in Nanjing, among which 313 high symptoms of stress cases and 144 matched controls were included in the analysis. Meaningfully high symptoms of anxiety were defined with a score of 6 points or greater on the phobic anxiety subscale of the Crown-Crisp index. We found that the PM2.5 effect perceived by the case group was significantly higher than the control group, and the PM2.5 exposure of the case group was also significantly higher than that of the control group. Binary logistic regression showed that for each increase in unit of PM2.5 exposure, the risk of pregnant women suffering from high mental stress increased by 13.76% (95 %CI: 8.26–19.53%). Cardiac hypertrophy could be induced by ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure. Since cardiac hypertrophy represents an early event leading to heart dysfunction, it is necessary to explore the molecular mechanisms, which are largely unknown. In the present study, an ambient particulate matter exposure mice model was established to explore its adverse effects related to the heart and the potential mechanisms. Forty-eight male C57BL/6 mice were randomly subjected to three groups: filtered air group, unfiltered air group and concentrated air group, and were exposed for 8 and 16 weeks, 6 h/day, respectively. In vitro experiments, the cardiac muscle cell line (HL-1) was treated with PM2.5 (0, 25, 50 and 100 μg/mL) for 24 h. In the present study, cardiac hypertrophy was occurred in vivo and vitro after exposure to PM2.5. Mechanistically, circ_0001859 could sponge miR-29b-3p, which could interact with 3′UTRs of Ctnnb1 (gene name of β-catenin). And Ctnnb1 expression was transcriptionally inhibited by si-circ_0001859 or miR-29b-3p mimic in HL-1 cells. Additionally, miR-29b-3p inhibitor could also make a reversion about the inhibition effect of circ_0001859 silencing on Ctnnb1 mRNA level in HL-1 cells. Functionally, knockout of circ_0001859 or overexpression of miR-29b-3p could inhibit LEF1/IGF-2R pathway and alleviate the progress of hypertrophy induced by PM2.5 in HL-1 cells. And miR-29b-3p inhibitor could reverse the inhibition effect of circ_0001859 silencing on hypertrophic response induced by PM2.5 in HL-1 cells. Consequently, the data demonstrated that circRNA_0001859 promoted the process of cardiac hypertrophy through suppressing miR-29b-3p leading to enhance Ctnnb1 level, and activated downstream pathway molecules LEF1/IGF-2R.

Rice (Oryza sativa) OsMADS58 is a C-class MADS box protein, and characterization of a transposon insertion mutant osmads58 suggested that OsMADS58 plays a role in stamen development. However, as no null mutation has been obtained, its role has remained unclear. Here, we report that the CRISPR knockout mutant osmads58 exhibits complex altered phenotypes, including anomalous diploid germ cells, aberrant meiosis, and delayed tapetum degeneration. This CRISPR mutant line exhibited stronger changes in expression of OsMADS58 target genes compared with the osmads58 dSpm (transposon insertion) line, along with changes in multiple pathways related to early stamen development. Notably, transcriptional regulatory circuits in young panicles covering the stamen at stages 4–6 were substantially altered in the CRISPR line compared to the dSpm line. These findings strongly suggest that the pleiotropic effects of OsMADS58 on stamen development derive from a potential role in stabilizing gene regulatory circuits during early stamen development. Thus, this work opens new avenues for viewing and deciphering the regulatory mechanisms of early stamen development from a network perspective.

Wind speed uncertainty and measurement noise affect the control effect in hydraulic wind turbine systems. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) method with a dynamic Kalman filter (KF) based on a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model to address this problem. First of all, the LPV model for a nonlinear system of a hydraulic wind turbine is established using function substitution. Then, a LPV-based KF is introduced into the MPC to provide more precise estimated results and improve the anti-interference ability of the system. According to the current condition of the hydraulic wind turbine, the method updates the Kalman state estimator at each sampling instant and computes the optimal control input by solving a quadratic programming (QP) optimization problem. The performance and the efficiency of the proposed method is validated in simulation and compared with other methods.

In this paper, a fractional-order model of the gas film is proposed for the dynamic characteristics of an air bearing. Based on the dynamic characteristics common between gas film and viscoelastic body, the idea of the fractional-order equivalent modeling of the dynamic characteristics of the gas film is presented to improve the modeling accuracy. Four fractional-order gas film (FOGF) models are introduced based on generalization of traditional viscoelastic models. The analysis of the characteristics of the FOGF models shows that the FOGF model can capture more complex dynamic characteristics and fit the real dynamic data of the gas film better than traditional models. A genetic algorithm particle swarm optimization (GA-PSO) method is used for parameter identification of the proposed models. The experimental results tested on the air bearing motion platform show that the FOGF models are superior in accuracy to the traditional equivalent models for the gas film. In particular, the fractional-order Maxwell gas film (FOMGF) model has the best capture accuracy compared to the other FOGF models and traditional models.

Time allocation is closely related to life quality and is a potential indicator of urban space utilization and sociospatial differentiation. However, existing time allocation studies focus on how time is allocated to various activities but pay less attention to where individuals allocate their time. In the context of China’s transformation, this study examines the differences in time allocation in different urban spaces between low- and non-low-income groups based on two methods, descriptive statistics and social area analysis. The results show that low-income participants’ daily activities (especially work) are highly dependent on the central city area. However, they are at a disadvantage in accessing the central city area. Nevertheless, non-low-income individuals have diversified activity spaces and can better choose locations according to the purpose of activities and make fuller use of various types of urban areas. This study indicates that there are social differences in time allocation and urban space utilization among different income groups. The results obtained with regression models reveal that in addition to income, activity characteristics and built environment characteristics are significant factors affecting the differences. Social policies should support the equitable distribution of urban resources for different social groups, especially for vulnerable groups who live in affordable housing.

Background and Purpose: Studies on rescue therapy for acute posterior circulation stroke due to basilar artery occlusion (BAO) are limited in the modern era of mechanical thrombectomy (MT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of rescue stenting (RS) following MT failure in patients with BAO.Methods: Data were collected from the Endovascular Treatment Key Technique and Emergency Work Flow Improvement of Acute Ischemic Stroke (ANGEL-ACT) prospective registry in China. Patients who underwent MT for BAO with failure of recanalization were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into the RS and non-RS groups. Clinical and laboratory findings, procedural details, and clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups.Results: Overall, 93 patients with acute BAO were analyzed. The RS group included 81 (87.1%) patients, and the non-RS group included 12 patients. A modified treatment in cerebral infarction (mTICI) score of 2b/3 was achieved in 75 (92.6%) patients in the RS group. Compared with the non-RS group, the RS group had a significantly higher rate of successful recanalization and favorable clinical outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score at 90 days post-procedure, 0–3: 16.7 vs. 51.9%, respectively; P = 0.023) without an increase in the rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and a significantly lower mortality rate (58.3 vs. 18.5%, respectively; P = 0.006). Furthermore, the use of a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor improved the rate of recanalization of the target artery without increasing the rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage.Conclusions: Permanent stenting appears to be a feasible rescue modality when MT fails and might provide functional benefits in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to BAO.

Background: Evidence of maternal exposure to ambient air pollution on congenital heart defects (CHD) has been mixed and are still relatively limited in developing countries. We aimed to investigate the association between maternal exposure to air pollution and CHD in China. Method: This longitudinal, population-based, case-control study consecutively recruited fetuses with CHD and healthy volunteers from 21 cities, Southern China, between January 2006 and December 2016. Residential address at delivery was linked to random forests models to estimate maternal exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 1 µm (PM1), ≤2.5 µm, and ≤10 µm as well as nitrogen dioxides, in three trimesters. The CHD cases were evaluated by obstetrician, pediatrician, or cardiologist, and confirmed by cardia ultrasound. The CHD subtypes were coded using the International Classification Diseases. Adjusted logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between air pollutants and CHD and its subtypes. Results: A total of 7055 isolated CHD and 6423 controls were included in the current analysis. Maternal air pollution exposures were consistently higher among cases than those among controls. Logistic regression analyses showed that maternal exposure to all air pollutants during the first trimester was associated with an increased odds of CHD (e.g., an interquartile range [13.3 µg/m3] increase in PM1 was associated with 1.09-fold ([95% confidence interval, 1.01–1.18]) greater odds of CHD). No significant associations were observed for maternal air pollution exposures during the second trimester and the third trimester. The pattern of the associations between air pollutants and different CHD subtypes was mixed. Conclusions: Maternal exposure to greater levels of air pollutants during the pregnancy, especially the first trimester, is associated with higher odds of CHD in offspring. Further longitudinal well-designed studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms associated with ischemic stroke through the construction of a lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network. miRNA expression profile in GSE55937, mRNA and lncRNA expression profiles in GSE122709, and mRNA expression profile in GSE146882 were downloaded from the NCBI GEO database. After the identification of the differentially expressed miRNA, lncRNA, and mRNA using GSE55937 and GSE122709 in ischemic stroke vs. control groups, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed. The lncRNA-miRNA, lncRNA-mRNA, and miRNA-mRNA pairs were predicted, and a lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network was constructed. Additionally, the gene-drug interactions were predicted. Characteristic genes were used to construct a support vector machine (SVM) model and verified using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. In total 38 miRNAs, 115 lncRNAs, and 990 mRNAs were identified between ischemic stroke and control groups. A PPI network with 371 nodes and 2306 interaction relationships was constructed. The constructed lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network contained 7 mRNAs, 14 lncRNAs, such as SND1-IT1, NAPA-AS1, LINC01001, LUCAT1, and ASAP1-IT2, and 8 miRNAs, such as miR-93-3p and miR-24-3p. The drug action analysis of the seven differential mRNAs included in the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network showed that four genes (GPR17, ADORA1, OPRM1 and LPAR3) were predicted as molecular targets of drugs. The area under the curve of the constructed SVM model was 0.886. The verification results of the relative expression of RNA by qRT-PCR were consistent with the results of bioinformatics analysis. LPAR3, ADORA1, GPR17, and OPRM1 may serve as therapeutic targets of ischemic stroke. lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory axis such as SND1-IT1/NAPA-AS1/LINC01001-miR-24-3p-LPAR3/ADORA1 and LUCAT1/ASAP1-IT2-miR-93-3p-GPR17 may play important roles in the progression of ischemic stroke.

Background: Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy, and chemotherapy remains the cornerstone for ovarian cancer management. Due to the unsatisfactory prognosis, a better understanding of the underlying molecular carcinogenesis is urgently required. Methods: Assays for determining cell growth, cell motility, and apoptosis were employed to evaluate the potential antitumor effects of metformin against ovarian cancer cells. Molecular biological methods were employed to explore the underlying mechanism. Human ovarian cancer samples and Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) dataset were used for uncovering the clinical significances of mesothelin (MSLN) on ovarian cancer. Results: In the present work, we found that metformin treatment led to cell growth and cell migration inhibition, and induced cell apoptosis. Metformin administration also impaired cancer cell stemness and the capillary-like structure formation capacity of SKOV3 cells. On mechanism, metformin treatment remarkably reduced mesothelin (MSLN) expression, downregulated IL-6/STAT3 signaling activity, subsequently resulted in VEGF and TGFβ1 expression. We also observed an oncogenic function of MSLN on ovarian cancer. Conclusions: Collectively, our findings suggested that metformin exerts anticancer effects by suppressing ovarian cancer cell malignancy, which attributed to MSLN inhibition mediated IL6/STAT3 signaling and VEGF and TGFβ1 downregulation.

Location awareness is crucial for underwater applications; without it, gathered data would be essentially useless. However, it is impossible to directly determine the location of an underwater target because GPS-reliant methods cannot be utilized in the underwater environment. To this end, the underwater target localization technique has become one of the most critical technologies in underwater applications, wherein GPS-equipped autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are typically used to assist with localization. It has been proved that, under the assumption of Gaussian noise, an appropriate geometry among ASVs and the underwater target can enhance localization accuracy. Unfortunately, the conclusion may not hold if outliers arise and the closed-form expression of Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) cannot be established. Eventually, it becomes hard to derive the accepted geometry, particularly for the received signal strength (RSS)-based ranging scenario. Therefore, this work optimizes the trajectory of ASVs with RSS-based ranging and in the presence of outliers to optimally estimate the location of an underwater target. The D-optimality criterion is applied in conjunction with the Monte Carlo method to determine the closed-form expression of the function, which then transforms the problem into an optimized framework. Nevertheless, the framework cannot be solved in the absence of the target location. In this case, the paper presents two methodologies to overcome the issue and achieve the optimum configuration without identifying the target location. (1) A min–max strategy that assumes that the target location drops in an uncertain region for a single or two ASVs is proposed; and (2) a two-phase localization approach (TPLA) that calculates the target location at each time slot for three ASVs is developed. Finally, the optimal trajectories of ASVs are constructed by a series of waypoints based on an analytically tractable measurement model in various conditions.

Nickel-based composite coatings containing graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared on Q235 steel using laser cladding. In order to retain the multilayer GNPs in the composite coatings after laser cladding, NiGNPs were prepared by electroless nickel plating on GNPs as the additive phase. All the coatings contain γ-(Ni, Fe), Cr23C6, Cr7C3, Fe3C and WC phases, and multilayer GNPs were retained successfully in the composite coatings. With the addition of GNPs, the microstructure of the coatings was obviously refined and the content of Cr-C compounds were increased along with its changed morphology. The mean microhardness of the Ni-based composite coatings containing GNPs was significantly improved compared to that of Ni45 coating, and the maximum microhardness was 745.06 when 20% NiGNPs was added. The results indicated that, due to the refinement and lubricating effects of GNPs, the friction coefficients of composite coatings were reduced and the wear resistance was improved compared to Ni45 coating.
