- Abstract
We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies.

Optical cavities are long expected as powerful tools for the realization of large momentum beam splitters for matter waves. In this letter, we realize a multi-photon atom interferometer driven via Bragg diffraction in an optical resonator. The key element of this demonstration is the use of a degenerate cavity to mediate the light-matter interaction which provides a large interrogation mode (1/e^2 diameter of 5.2 mm) and makes the method applicable to a vast class of measurement geometries and atom sources. In view of a future application for gravitational waves detection, we use, as a first demonstration, a standard sub-Doppler cooled atomic source coupled with a 80 cm horizontal resonator and obtain a momentum transfer of up to 2n = 8ħk. Additionally, by varying the tilt of experiment, and thus the projection of gravity, we study the inertial sensitivity of this setup using significantly reduced optical power (

Quantum gas microscopes have become a major element for quantum simulations using ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. They are for example used to observe long-range order such as anti-ferromagnetic correlations in far field optical lattices using density and spin resolved microscopy. Decreasing the period of such lattice offer interesting perspective to increase atom-atom interaction energies and engineer atom-light coupling that our group tackles via the hybridization of cold atoms and nano-structured surfaces.In this poster, we will present how such type of sub-wavelength lattice potentials can be generated by trapping atoms in proximity (tens to hundreds of nanometers) of a nano-structured surface. At such atom to surface distance, the attractive Casimir-Polder force can be compensated by a doubly dressed state trapping method that I will discuss. Such method additionally offers solutions to overcome the diffraction limit of conventional imaging that become critical for sub-wavelength lattices. In this work, I will present the experimental characterization of a sub-wavelength resolution absorption imaging applicable to quantum gas detection. This method requires a quantitative determination of the atom number of dense clouds which has been characterized in this work and demonstrate that the scattering cross section reduces linearly with the optical density. Modelling the propagation of light in dense cloud we show that this reduction can be attributed to re-scattering of the incoherent part of the resonant fluorescence spectrum.The poster will additionally present an update on our recent work on the spectroscopy of Acetylene in sealed hollow core fibers.

We demonstrate a compact laser source suitable for trapping and cooling potassium. By frequency doubling a fiber laser diode at 1534 nm in a waveguide, we produce 767 nm laser light. A current modulation of the diode allows us to generate the two required frequencies for cooling in a simple and robust apparatus. We successfully used this laser source to trap 39K. - Abstract
We present the scientific motivation for future space tests of the equivalence principle, and in particular the universality of free fall, at the 10− 17 level or better. Two possible mission scenarios, one based on quantum technologies, the other on electrostatic accelerometers, that could reach that goal are briefly discussed. This publication is a White Paper written in the context of the Voyage 2050 ESA Call for White Papers.

International audience; Experiments in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics require precise and accurate control of digital, analog, and radio frequency (RF) signals. We present a control hardware based on a FPGA core which drives various modules via a simple interface bus. The system supports an operating frequency of 10 MHz and a memory depth of 8 M (2^23) instructions, both easily scalable. Successive experimental sequences can be stacked with no dead time and synchronized with external events at any instructions. Two or more units can be cascaded and synchronized to a common clock, a feature useful to operate large experimental setups in a modular way.
