The literature of Ireland displays an exceptional richness and diversity - whether in Irish or English, by native Irish and Anglo-Irish writers or by outsiders like Edmund Spenser whose works were deeply imbued with the country in which he lived and wrote. In over 2,000 entries, the Companion to Irish Literature surveys the Irish literary landscape across some sixteen centuries, describing its features and landmarks. Entries range from ogam writing, developed in the 4th century, to the fiction, poetry, and drama of the l990s; and from Cu Chulainn to James Joyce. There are accounts of authors as early as Adomnan, 7th century Abbot of Iona, up to contemporary writers such as Roddy Doyle, Brian Friel, Seamus Heaney, and Edna O'Brien. Individual entries are provided for all major works, from Tain Bo Cuailnge - the Ulster saga reflecting the Celtic Iron Age - to Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent, O Cadhain's Cre na Cille, and Banville's The Book of Evidence. The Companion also illuminates the historical contexts of these writers, and the events which sometimes directly inspired them - the Famine of 1845-8, which provided a theme for novelists, poets, and memoirists from William Carleton to Patrick Kavanagh and Peadar O Laoghaire; the founding of the Abbey Theatre and its impact on playwrights such as J. M. Synge and Padraic Colum; the Easter Rising that stirred Yeats to the 'terrible beauty' of 'Easter 1916'. It offers a wealth of information on general topics, ranging from the stage Irishman to Catholicism, Protestantism, the Irish language, and university education in Ireland; and on genres such as annals, bardic poetry, and folksong. The majority of entries include a succinct bibliography, and the volume also provides a chronology and maps.

The LA/N rat is one of two congenic strains bred from the original obese, hyperphagic and hypertensive rats of Koletsky. With the exception of hypertension the LA/N strain, when homozygous for the corpulent gene, is phenotypically similar to the parent Koletsky strain and prone to the development of vascular and myocardial lesions. Here we report a detailed analysis of the serum lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins B, E and A-I levels in young adult homozygous corpulent (cp/cp) rats of both sexes and in lean males of the same age which were demonstrable non-carriers (+/+) of the cp gene. Both male and female cp/cp rats were hypertriglyceridemic (282–512 mg/100 ml) and moderately hypercholesterolemic (74–84 mg/100 ml). Elevations in these lipids reflected the presence of large (622 A), triacylglycerol-rich and apoprotein-poor VLDL containing both apolipoproteins Bh and B1 and increased phospholipid-rich HDL. Similar, but less pronounced, elevations in serum apolipoproteins B and E in the cp/cp rats when compared to the +/+ animals were also noted. Apolipoprotein A-I levels were 2.7–3-fold higher in cp/cp rats. The levels of VLDL were significantly higher in female cp/cp rats; however, the levels of IDL (intermediate-density lipoprotiens), LDL and HDL were significantly lower than in the more atherosclerosis prone male cp/cp rats. Similarly, apolipoprotein A-I was higher and apolipoprotein B lower in the male cp/cp than in the female cp/cp rats. The LDL (d = 1.030–1.063 g/ml) in cp/cp rats, like that in normal animals, was heterogeneous and contained apolipoproteins B1, E, A-I and C. This fraction was significantly elevated in male cp/cp rats when compared to females but still represented less than 13% of the total serum cholesterol and less than 6% of the total serum lipids in 3-month-old cp/cp animals. The ratio of cholesterol to phospholipids was significantly lower for all lipoproteins in cp/cp rats when compared to +/+ males and these ratios for female cp/cp rats were in all cases lower than those of male cp/cp animals.

A variety of two-phase flow models can be derived following a few basic principles, which are here illustrated which no more generality than is essential. Among the models derived is one already widely used in applications, even though it is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Final assessment of such models remains a distant goal, but will clearly involve numerical solutions; several methods in current use are discussed with a guide to selecting the one appropriate to a particular problem.

Cross sections for the production of Kr+, Ne+, and Kr++ in collisions of Kr++ with Ne and of Ne++ with Kr have measured for primary ion energies E between 0.5 and 100 eV. For E≳ 10 eV, the cross sections all vary rather slowly and are between 1 and 8 A2. As E is decreased below 5–10 eV, the cross sections all increase. The cross section σa measured for Kr++ +Ne→Kr+ + ⋯ is expected to be a reasonably accurate representation of the cross section for Kr++ +Ne→Kr+ +Ne+; σa has been compared with three theoretical results for this reaction, but the theoretical and experimental results do not agree very well. The implications of the discrepancies between theory and experiment are discussed. σa is in good agreement with an earlier measurement of Kr++ +Ne → Kr+ + ⋯ at higher E. The efficiency with which product ions are collected by the present apparatus is discussed.

A method of fractional steps is used to extend a semi-implicit finite-difference technique for multidimensional two-phase flow calculations. This extension permits time step size to be chosen independent of convection velocities in one space direction, and still resolves multidimensional coupled sonic and phase exchange effects implicitly by forming a simple Poisson problem for pressure. Because pure time-splitting by physical phenomena was found unsuited to thermal hydraulics problems, a stabilizing corrections method was chosen. An application in nuclear reactor safety analysis is demonstrated.

Strongly elliptic operators realized under Dirichlet boundary conditions in unbounded domains are shown to generate analytic semigroups in the topology of uniform convergence. This fact is applied to initial-boundary value problems for temporally homogeneous and temporally inhomogeneous parabolic equations.

The onset of oscillation at non-zero finite amplitude is shown to be governed in the generic case by a scaling law for the frequency of oscillation f in terms of the bifurcation parameter μ – μc namely f ~ (μ – μ)c1/2. This law can be expected to hold whenever such a bifurcation occurs in a nondegenerate system without hysteresis.

Data on tundra swans ( Cygnus columbianus columbianus ) were recorded in the central and eastern Canadian Arctic, south of 77 N latitude, and on Southampton Island during the summers of 1980-85. Swans were seen on Victoria, Royal Geographical Society, King William, Stanley, and Southampton islands and on southwestern Melville and Boothia peninsulas. Most swans inhabited low-lying areas that were inundated by the sea following glaciation and are now dotted with shallow tundra ponds. Breeding swans were common in the Minto Inlet, Lady Franklin Point, and Cambridge Bay areas of Victoria Island and on King William Island and southwestern Boothia Peninsula. In August, 52-89% of the adults and subadults in these areas were seen as potential breeders, and the remainder were in nonbreeding flocks. Between 17 and 33% of the pairs had cygnets, and 10-13% of all swans were cygnets. With brood sizes of 1-3 (1.5 ±0.7 [mean ±SD] to 1.6 ±0.5), the apparent breeding success was low relative to other northern swan populations. However, these breeding populations are significant and should be considered in management plans for the eastern population of the tundra swan.
