IntroductionWith more public interest in consuming locally grown produce, small specialty crop farms (SSCF) are a viable and growing segment of the food production chain in the United States.MethodsThe goal of this study was to investigate the genomic diversity of Campylobacter isolated from dairy manure (n = 69) collected from 10 SSCF in Northeast Ohio between 2018 and 2020.ResultsA total of 56 C. jejuni and 13 C. coli isolates were sequenced. Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) identified 22 sequence types (STs), with ST-922 (18%) and ST-61 (13%) predominant in C. jejuni and ST-829 (62%) and ST-1068 (38%) predominant in C. coli. Interestingly, isolates with similar genomic and gene contents were detected within and between SSCF over time, suggesting that Campylobacter could be transmitted between farms and may persist in a given SSCF over time. Virulence-associated genes (n = 35) involved in the uptake and utilization of potassium and organic compounds (succinate, gluconate, oxoglutarate, and malate) were detected only in the C. jejuni isolates, while 45 genes associated with increased resistance to environmental stresses (capsule production, cell envelope integrity, and iron uptake) were detected only in the C. coli isolates. Campylobacter coli isolates were also sub-divided into two distinct clusters based on the presence of unique prophages (n = 21) or IncQ conjugative plasmid/type-IV secretion system genes (n = 15). Campylobacter coli isolates harbored genes associated with resistance to streptomycin (aadE-Cc; 54%) and quinolone (gyrA-T86I; 77%), while C. jejuni had resistance genes for kanamycin (aph3’-IIIa; 20%). Both species harbored resistance genes associated with β-lactam (especially, blaOXA-193; up to 100%) and tetracycline (tetO; up to 59%).Discussion/ConclusionOur study demonstrated that Campylobacter genome plasticity associated with conjugative transfer might provide resistance to certain antimicrobials and viral infections via the acquisition of protein-encoding genes involved in mechanisms such as ribosomal protection and capsule modification.

• Infectious diarrhea was assessed in 140 allogeneic hematopoietic cell recipients. • The cumulative incidence of at least one episode after 1 year was 32%. • The incidence rate was the highest in the pre-engraftment phase. • Most frequently observed were Clostridioides difficile, adenovirus, Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and Campylobacter jejuni. To determine the incidence of infectious diarrhea after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay and assess risk factors for developing infectious diarrhea. This was a single-center retrospective study of 140 consecutive allogeneic HCT recipients. Infectious diarrhea was assessed using a laboratory-developed multiplex polymerase chain reaction the first year after transplantation. The incidence rate of infectious diarrhea episodes was 47 per 100 person-years, with the highest rate observed in the pre-engraftment phase. Most episodes were seen as nosocomial infections (38%) and most affected patients (82%) had only one episode of infectious diarrhea. The cumulative incidence of at least one episode of infectious diarrhea was 32% after 1 year. Nonrelapse mortality was higher in transplant recipients with at least one episode of infectious diarrhea (hazard ratio (HR) 2.02, 95% CI = 1.07-3.80). The most frequently observed pathogens were Clostridium difficile , adenovirus, Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, and Campylobacter jejuni. Patients with acute lower gastrointestinal graft-vs-host disease stage 3 or 4 (HR 3.68, 95% CI = 1.57-8.63) conferred a higher risk for a first infectious diarrhea episode. Campylobacter is a leading foodborne pathogen, and poultry are a major vehicle for infection. Houseflies play important roles in colonization of broiler flocks with Campylobacter but comparable information for turkey farms is limited. Here, we investigated houseflies as potential vectors for Campylobacter in 28 commercial turkey flocks. We characterized species, genotypes, and the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of Campylobacter from turkey feces and houseflies in the same turkey house. Of the 28 flocks, 25 yielded Campylobacter from turkey droppings and houseflies, with an average of 6.25 and 3.11 Campylobacter log CFU/g feces and log CFU/fly, respectively. Three flocks were negative for Campylobacter both in turkey feces and in houseflies. Both C. coli and C. jejuni were detected in turkey feces and houseflies, with C. coli more likely to be recovered from houseflies than feces. Determination of Campylobacter species, genotypes, and AMR profiles revealed up to six different strains in houseflies from a single house, including multidrug-resistant strains. For the predominant strain types, presence in houseflies was predictive of presence in feces, and vice versa. These findings suggest that houseflies may serve as vehicles for dissemination of Campylobacter, including multidrug-resistant strains, within a turkey house, and potentially between different turkey houses and farms in the same region. Campylobacter species are the pathogens of the intestinal tract, which infrequently cause bacteremia. To reveal the clinical characteristics of Campylobacter bacteremia, we performed a retrospective, multicenter study. Patients diagnosed with Campylobacter bacteremia in three general hospitals in western Japan between 2011 and 2021 were included in the study. Clinical, microbiological, and prognostic data of the patients were obtained from medical records. We stratified the cases into the gastroenteritis (GE) and fever predominant (FP) types by focusing on the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms. Thirty-nine patients (24 men and 15 women) were included, with a median age of 57 years and bimodal distribution between those in their 20 s and the elderly. The proportion of GE and FP types were 21 (53.8%) and 18 (46.2%), respectively. Comparing these two groups, there was no significant difference in patient backgrounds in terms of sex, age, and underlying diseases. Campylobacter jejuni was exclusively identified in the GE type (19 cases, 90.5%), although other species such as Campylobacter fetus and Campylobacter coli were isolated in the FP type as well. Patients with the FP type underwent intravenous antibiotic therapy more frequently (47.6% vs. 88.9%), and their treatment (median: 5 days vs. 13 days) and hospitalization (median: 7 days vs. 21 days) periods were significantly longer. None of the patients died during the hospitalization. We present the case of a 17-year-old Caucasian male whose condition featured acute renal failure, anemia, and deep thrombocytopenia after five consecutive days of diarrhea. Campylobacter coli was identified in stool cultures and, although the direct role of this germ in the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) remains uncertain to this day, initial presentation was considered broadly consistent with typical HUS. However, the patient showed no signs of spontaneous recovery over time. While secondary investigations showed no abnormalities in ADAMTS13 activity or in the alternate pathway of complement, patient's condition deteriorated. Worsening kidney failure required emergency renal replacement therapy and was followed by cardiac involvement in the form of acute heart failure. Given this unfavorable development, blood samples were drawn to look for mutations in the alternate complement pathway, and eculizumab therapy was initiated without further delay, allowing prompt improvement of cardiac function and recovery of diuresis. Upon discharge, the patient still had to undergo intermittent dialysis, which would later be withdrawn. Genetic analysis ultimately confirmed the presence of a complement factor H mutation associated with a high risk of disease recurrence, indicating long-term continuation of eculizumab therapy. Turkeys are important sources of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter. A total of 1063 isolates were obtained from 293 turkey flocks across Canada between 2016 and 2021 to evaluate their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevalence, patterns, distribution, and association with antimicrobial use (AMU). A high proportion of C. jejuni and C. coli isolates were resistant to tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, despite the very low use of these drugs. C. jejuni isolates had a higher probability of being resistant to tetracyclines than C. coli isolates. The chance of C. jejuni isolates being resistant to fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and lincosamides was lower compared to C. coli. Isolates from the western region had a higher probability of being resistant to fluoroquinolones than isolates from Ontario. Isolates from Ontario had higher odds of being resistant to tetracyclines than isolates from Quebec. No associations were noted between the resistance and use of the same antimicrobial, but the use of certain antimicrobial classes may have played a role in the maintenance of resistance in Campylobacter (fluoroquinolone resistance – bacitracin and streptogramin use, tetracycline resistance – flavophospholipids and streptogramins use, macrolide resistance – flavophospholipid use). Campylobacter spp. are the main cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, and broiler chicks are the main vector of transmission to humans. The high prevalence of Campylobacter in poultry meat and the increase of antibiotic resistant strains have raised the need to identify new antimicrobial agents. For this reason, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of two extracts of olive leaf against antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter strains (C. jejuni and C. coli) isolated from poultry food chain. The extracts of olive leaf (E1 and E2) were markedly different in their chemical compositions. While E1 was composed predominantly of highly hydrophilic compounds such as hydroxytyrosol and hydroxytyrosol glucosides (14,708 mg/100 g), E2 mainly contained moderately hydrophilic compounds, with oleuropein (20,471 mg/100 g) being prevalent. All Campylobacter strains exhibited similar antibiotic profiles, being resistant to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. E1 showed strong antibacterial activity and reduced bacterial growth from 4.12 to 8.14 log CFU/mL, depending on the strain. Hydroxytyrosol was the main compound responsible, causing the inhibition of growth of Campylobacter strains at low concentrations (0.1–0.25 mg/mL). E2 demonstrated a lower antibacterial effect than E1, reducing growth from 0.52 to 2.49 log CFU/mL. This study investigated the prevalence and antibiotic resistance (AR) profiles of Campylobacter spp. isolated from animals, humans, and the environment in South Africa based on available published data. Original articles published from January 1, 1990 to January 1, 2021 were searched from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Africa Index Medicus, Scopus, and African Journal Online databases. Data were analyzed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 3.0). After screening, articles on animals (n = 25), humans (n = 7), environment (n = 3), animals/environment (n = 2), and a (n = 1) study on animals, humans, and the environment were included in this review. The pooled prevalence estimates (PPEs) were 28.8%, 16.4%, and 28.4% in animals, humans, and the environment, respectively. The Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli species were commonly isolated from humans, animals, and the environment in South Africa. The AR profiles were screened from 2032 Campylobacter spp., with the highest PPE of AR observed against clindamycin (76.9%) and clarithromycin (76.5%). Campylobacter isolates tested with the disk diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration methods recorded an overall AR prevalence of 35.3% and 37.1%, respectively, whereas multidrug resistance PPE was 35.3%. Regular surveillance of Campylobacter spp. prevalence and its antimicrobial resistance strains is recommended, as well as the formulation of a "One Health" approach for better management and control of Campylobacter spp. infection in South Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the htrA, htrB and ppk1 genes -all of which are related to environmental persistence- in C. jejuni and C. coli isolates obtained from abattoir samples at the arrival of broilers (initial stage) and in meat products after processing (final stage). A total of 119 DNA extracts (55 C. jejuni and 64 C. coli) were included in the study. Identification of genes was performed by conventional PCR (one for each gene). The overall prevalence was 40.3%, 93.3% and 68.9% for the htrA, htrB and ppk1 genes, respectively. Statistically significant differences were found (p < 0.05) between prevalence of C. jejuni and C. coli for all three genes. In C. coli the prevalence was significantly higher for the htrA (p = 0.007) and htrB (p = 0.015) genes, while ppk1 gene prevalence was significantly higher in C. jejuni (p < 0.001). In addition, statistically significant increase in the frequency of htrA (p = 0.007) and htrB (p = 0.013) genes in the final product compared to broilers on arrival at the abattoir was observed in C. jejuni, but not in C. coli. Genomes of a Campylobacter coli OR12-like strain ChP2023 (1,713,995 bp) isolated from broiler chicken and Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni NCTC 11168R-like strain KF2023 (1,729,995 bp) isolated from turkey, from poultry production facilities in Ukraine in 2023, were sequenced using Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Abstract Background Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) and spinal epidural abscess (SEA) are known as mimics of each other because they present with flaccid paralysis following an infection; however, they differ in the main causative bacteria. Nevertheless, the two diseases can occur simultaneously if there is a preceding Campylobacter infection. Here, we report the first case of SEA with GBS following Campylobacter coli infection. Case presentation A 71-year-old Japanese man presented with progressive back pain and paralysis of the lower limbs following enteritis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lumbar epidural abscess that required surgical decompression; therefore, surgical drainage was performed. Blood cultures revealed the presence of C. coli. Despite surgery, the paralysis progressed to the extremities. Nerve conduction studies led to the diagnosis of GBS. Anti-ganglioside antibodies in the patient suggested that GBS was preceded by Campylobacter infection. Intravascular immunoglobulin therapy attenuated the progression of the paralysis. Conclusions We report a case of SEA and GBS following Campylobacter infection. A combination of the two diseases is rare; however, it could occur if the preceding infection is caused by Campylobacter spp. If a cause is known but the patient does not respond to the corresponding treatment, it is important to reconsider the diagnosis based on the medical history.

Campylobacter coli (C. coli) is a gram negative, non-spore forming, mobile, curved, or spiral-shaped rod organisms and one of the most common gastrointestinal human pathogens. Campylobacter very rarely causes bacteremia. However, there are reports of bloodstream infection of C. coli and most of the Campylobacterbacteremia have been found among immunocompromised patients. In this study, a case of C. coli blood stream infection that was associated with diarrhea in an immunocompetent patient.

ABSTRACT Campylobacter is the leading bacterial cause of diarrheal illnesses worldwide. Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are the most common species accounting for campylobacteriosis. Although the proportion of campylobacteriosis caused by C. coli is increasing rapidly in China, the underlying mechanisms of this emergence remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the whole-genome sequences and associated environments of 1,195 C. coli isolates with human, poultry, or porcine origins from 1980 to 2021. C. coli isolates of human origin were closely related to those from poultry, suggesting that poultry was the main source of C. coli infection in humans. Analysis of antimicrobial resistance determinants indicated that the prevalence of multidrug-resistant C. coli has increased dramatically since the 2010s, coinciding with the shift in abundance from C. jejuni to C. coli in Chinese poultry. Compared with C. jejuni, drug-resistant C. coli strains were better adapted and showed increased proliferation in the poultry production environment, where multiple antimicrobial agents were frequently used. This study provides an empirical basis for the molecular mechanisms that have enabled C. coli to become the dominant Campylobacter species in poultry; we also emphasize the importance of poultry products as sources of campylobacteriosis caused by C. coli in human patients. IMPORTANCE The proportion of campylobacteriosis caused by C. coli is increasing rapidly in China. Coincidentally, the dominant species of Campylobacter occurring in poultry products has shifted from C. jejuni to C. coli. Here, we analyzed the whole-genome sequences of 1,195 C. coli isolates from different origins. The phylogenetic relationship among C. coli isolates suggests that poultry was the main source of C. coli infection in humans. Further analysis indicated that antimicrobial resistance in C. coli strains has increased dramatically since the 2010s, which could facilitate their adaptation in the poultry production environment, where multiple antimicrobial agents are frequently used. Thus, our findings suggest that the judicious use of antimicrobial agents could mitigate the emergence of multidrug-resistant C. coli strains and enhance clinical outcomes by restoring drug sensitivity in Campylobacter.

ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to public health due to long-term antimicrobial use (AMU), which promotes the bacterial acquisition of antimicrobial resistance determinants (ARDs). Within food-producing animals, organic and extensive Iberian swine production is based on sustainable and eco-friendly management systems, providing an excellent opportunity to evaluate how sustained differences in AMU impact the development and spread of AMR. Here, through a whole-genome sequencing approach, we provide an in-depth characterization of the resistome and mobilome and their interaction in 466 sentinel bacteria, namely, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., Campylobacter coli, and Staphylococcus spp., recovered from 37 intensive and organic-extensive pig farms. Both ARDs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were primarily taxon-associated, with higher similarities among bacteria which were closely phylogenetically related. E. coli exhibited the most diverse resistome and mobilome, with 85.4% mobilizable ARDs, 50.3% of which were plasmid-associated. Staphylococcus spp. exhibited a broad repertoire of ARDs and MGEs, with 52.3% of its resistome being mobilizable. Although Enterococcus spp. carried the highest number of ARDs per isolate and its plasmidome was similar in size to that of E. coli, 43.7% of its resistome was mobilizable. A narrow spectrum of ARDs constituted the C. coli resistome, with point mutations as its main AMR driver. A constrained AMU, as observed in organic-extensive herds, determined a reduction in the quantitative composition of the resistome and the complexity of the resistome-mobilome interaction. These results demonstrate taxon-associated AMR-MGE interactions and evidence that responsible AMU can contribute to reducing AMR pressure in the food chain. IMPORTANCE This study provides the first integral genomic characterization of the resistome and mobilome of sentinel microorganisms for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance from two different swine production systems. Relevant differences were observed among taxa in the resistomes and mobilomes they harbored, revealing their distinctive risk in AMR dissemination and spread. Thus, Escherichia coli and, to a lesser extent, Staphylococcus spp. constituted the main reservoirs of mobilizable antimicrobial resistance genes, which were predominantly plasmid-associated; in contrast to Campylobacter coli, whose resistome was mainly determined by point mutations. The reduced complexity of mobilome-resistome interaction in Enterococcus spp. suggested its limited role in AMR dissemination from swine farms. The significant differences in antimicrobial use among the studied farms allowed us to assess the suitability of whole-genome sequencing as a rapid and efficient technique for the assessment of mid- to long-term on-farm interventions for the reduction of antimicrobial use and the evaluation of AMR status.

Campylobacter spp. constitute a significant global threat as a leading cause of foodborne illnesses, with poultry meat as a prominent reservoir for these pathogens. South Korea is known for its diverse poultry consumption habits, and continuous outbreaks make it a matter of concern to perform a meta-analysis to identify the primary source of contamination. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess and compare the prevalence of Campylobacter in various poultry and meat types while also considering the importance of environmental factors in South Korea. The meta-analysis revealed that duck meat exhibited the highest prevalence of Campylobacter, with a pooled estimate of 70.46% (95% CI: 42.80% to 88.38%), followed by chicken meat at a pooled prevalence of 36.17% (95% CI: 26.44% to 47.91%). Additionally, our analysis highlighted the predominance of C. jejuni and C. coli in South Korea. These findings underscore the importance of implementing rigorous food safety measures and establishing robust surveillance programs in the poultry industry to mitigate the risk of Campylobacter-related foodborne illnesses associated with meat consumption in South Korea.

Campylobacteriosis is a gastroenteritis caused by pathogenic Campylobacter species and an important topic in public health. Here we review the global epidemiology of campylobacteriosis in the last eight years between 2014-2021, providing comprehensive and updated information on the reported incidence and outbreaks of Campylobacter infections. The government public health website of each of the 195 countries and publications from 2014 to September 2022 in public databases were searched. The reported incidence of campylobacteriosis in pre-COVID-19 years was compared to that during the COVID-19 pandemic in countries where data were available. Czech Republic had the highest reported incidence of campylobacteriosis worldwide (215 per 100,000 in 2019), followed by Australia (146.8 per 100,000 in 2016) and New Zealand (126.1 per 100,000 in 2019). Campylobacter was one of the most common human enteric pathogens in both developed and developing countries. About 90% of cases of campylobacteriosis were caused by Campylobacter jejuni, whereas less than 10% of cases were caused by Campylobacter coli. Other Campylobacter species were also isolated. The reported incidence and case numbers of campylobacteriosis in developed nations have remained steadily high prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst some countries reported an increasing trend such as France and Japan. While outbreaks were more frequently reported in some countries, Campylobacter infections were mainly sporadic cases in most of the developed countries. Campylobacter infection was more common in summer in some but not all countries. Campylobacter infection was more common in males than females. The COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the reported incidence of campylobacteriosis in most countries where 2020 epidemiology data were available. In conclusion, Campylobacter infection remains a global health concern. Increased research and improved strategies are needed for prevention and reduction of Campylobacter infection. Worldwide, farm animals, in particular poultry, are an important reservoir for Campylobacter spp. However, information on Campylobacter colonization in farm animals in Africa is scarce. Hence, this cross-sectional study determined antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter from both commercial and smallholder farm animals in the Asante Akim North Municipality of Ghana. Fecal samples from poultry and livestock kept by commercial and smallholder farms were collected and analyzed using standard microbiological methods. The overall Campylobacter frequency was 20.3% (n/N = 322/1,585), and frequencies detected were similarly high in isolates from commercial (21.0%, n/N = 169/805) and smallholder (19.6%, n/N = 153/780) farms. Species isolated were C. coli (67.7%, n/N = 218/322) and C. jejuni (32.3%, n/N = 104/322). However, the frequency of C. coli was 2.1 (95% CI: 1.8-2.5) times higher than what was found for C. jejuni. Campylobacter frequencies in the rainy season was 22.2% (n/N = 258/1,160) and 15.1% (n/N = 64/425) in the dry season (prevalence ratio = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.2-1.9). About 1.7% (n/N = 6/322) of the Campylobacter isolates, all from smallholder farms, were susceptible to all antibiotics tested. Multidrug resistance was observed for 4.7% (n/N = 15/322) of the Campylobacter isolates, of which 93.3% (n/N = 14/15) occurred in isolates from commercial farms. This study highlights the need for the implementation of control programs, in commercial farming but also at the smallholder farm level, to formulate clear guidelines aimed at decreasing Campylobacter contamination of meat products and reducing the use of antibiotics in the farming sector. Simple Summary: This survey investigated the incidence of Campylobacter (C) jejuni and C. coli infection in laying hens housed in farms which use different rearing systems: cages (A), barns (B) and aviaries (C). Two flocks (1 and 2) for each farm were evaluated. The hen plasma levels of corticosterone and interleukin 6 (IL-6), which are considered welfare indicators, and the sensitivity of detected Campylobacter strains to the antibiotics were investigated. The highest (p < 0.05) levels of IL-6 and corticosterone were found in laying hens housed in aviaries. C. jejuni and C. coli were identified in 77/177 (43.5%) and 69/177 (38.9%) laying hens, respectively. C. jejuni and C. coli were simultaneously detected in 14 laying hens (7.9%). C. jejuni was prevalently found in laying hens housed in barns (B1: 53.3%; B2: 46.7%) and aviaries (C1: 34.6%; C2: 86.7%). C. coli was prevalently identified in laying hens housed in cages (A1: 41.9%; p < 0.001; OR: 10.11, CI95%: 2.04–50.19; A2: 80%; p < 0.001; OR: 56.00, CI95%: 10.33–303.68) and, depending on the flock, in barns (B2: 40%) and aviaries (C1 54.8%). In particular, antibiotic resistance to fluoroquinolones and tetracycline was found, and it was mainly detected among C. coli strains. Multidrug resistance was found in 19.7% of C. coli and 17.5% C. jejuni strains, respectively. The incidence of Campylobacter infection found in the farms highlights the opportunity to increase the biosecurity measures to be adopted in the management of laying hen flocks. The aims of this paper were to evaluate the incidence of C. jejuni and C. coli infection in laying hen flocks housed in different rearing systems, the plasma levels of two welfare indicators (corticosterone and interleukin 6, IL-6) and the antimicrobial resistance of the detected Campylobacter strains. Two different flocks (1 and 2) from cage (A), barn (B) and aviary (C) farms were investigated. The highest (p < 0.05) levels of IL-6 were detected in laying hens housed in aviaries. A similar trend emerged in corticosterone level, although differences were found between C1 and C2. C. jejuni and C. coli were identified in 43.5% and 38.9% of birds, respectively. In total, 14 out of 177 (7.9%) hens simultaneously hosted C. jejuni and C. coli.C. jejuni was prevalently detected in hens housed in barns (B1: 53.3%; B2: 46.7%) and aviaries (C1: 34.6%; C2: 86.7%). Conversely, laying hens housed in cages were significantly exposed to infection of C. coli (A1: 41.9%; A2: 80%) while, regarding barns and aviaries, a significant prevalence emerged only in flocks B2 (40%) and C1 (54.8%). Simultaneous infection was statistically significant in barn B1 (36.7%). Antibiotic resistance was mainly detected among C. coli strains, and it was most frequent for fluoroquinolones and tetracycline. Multidrug resistance was also found in C. jejuni (19.7%) and C. coli (17.5%) strains. Background: Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the most significant Campylobacter species responsible for severe gastrointestinal disorders. Raw poultry meat is considered a source of Campylobacter transmission to the human population. Objectives: The present study was aimed to assess the prevalence rate, antibiotic resistance properties, virulence characters and molecular typing of C. jejuni and C. coli strains isolated from raw poultry meat samples. Methods: Three hundred and eighty raw poultry meat samples were collected and analysed for the presence of Campylobacter spp. using the microbial culture. Species identification was done using the Polymerase Chain Reaction. Disk diffusion was developed to assess the antimicrobial resistance pattern of isolates. The distribution of virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes was determined by PCR. Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus‐PCR was used for molecular typing. Results: Campylobacter species were isolated from 6.25% of examined samples. C. jejuni and C. coli contamination rates were found to be 57.44% and 48.14%, respectively. C. jejuni strains harboured the highest resistance rate against serythromycin (42.59%), ampicillin (38.88%), ciprofloxacin (33.33%), chloramphenicol (31.48%) and tetracycline (31.48%). C. coli isolates harboured the highest resistance rate against ampicillin (73.07%), ciprofloxacin (73.07%), erythromycin (65.38%) and chloramphenicol (50%). AadE1 (44.44%), blaOXA‐61 (42.59%) and tet(O) (35.18%) were the most commonly detected resistance genes in C. jejuni and cmeB (34.61%) and blaOXA‐61 (34.61%) were the most commonly detected among C. coli strains. The most frequent virulence factors among the C. jejuni isolates were flaA (100%), ciaB (100%), racR (83.33%), dnaJ (81.48%), cdtB (81.48%), cdtC (79.62%) and cadF (74.07%). The most frequent virulence factors among the C. coli isolates were flaA (100%), ciaB (100%), pldA (65.38%) and cadF (61.53%). Conclusions: The majority of C. jejuni and C. coli strains had more than 80% similarities in their ERIC‐PCR pattern, which may show their common source of transmission. Background: In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence, tetracycline resistance and presence of Tet(O) in Campylobacter strains isolated from chicken in markets of Lima, Peru. Methods: A total of 250 chicken samples were obtained from traditional markets (skin, n = 120) and supermarkets (meat, n = 130). Samples were subjected to microbiological assays for identification of Campylobacter spp. according to ISO 10272-2017, and the isolates were then submitted to species identification by PCR. Phenotypic resistance to tetracyclines was assessed by the Kirby–Bauer test, and the presence of the Tet(O) gene was determined by PCR. Results: A significantly higher prevalence (p < 0.0001) of Campylobacter coli in skin samples from traditional markets (97.5%) than in meat samples from supermarkets (36.2%) was observed. On the other hand, Campylobacter jejuni was confirmed only in 3.1% of meat samples. All Campylobacter species isolated from skin and meat samples were phenotypically resistant to tetracyclines; however, the presence of the Tet(O) gene in C. coli was identified in 76.9% and 66.0% of skin and meat samples, no significant statistical difference (p = 0.1488) was found between these prevalence. All C. jejuni isolated from chicken meat samples from supermarkets were positive for Tet(O) gene. Conclusions: This study confirms the high prevalence of C. coli isolated from chicken sold in traditional markets and supermarkets in Lima, Peru, and in more than 70% of these strains, phenotypic resistance to tetracyclines could be linked with expression of the Tet(O) gene. A working hypothesis is that less common species of Campylobacter (other than C. jejuni and C. coli) play a role in enteric disease among children in low resource settings and explain the gap between the detection of Campylobacter using culture and culture independent methods. "Candidatus Campylobacter infans" (C. infans), was recently detected in stool samples from children and hypothesized to play a role in Campylobacter epidemiology in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This study determined the prevalence of C. infans in symptomatic and asymptomatic stool samples from children living in Iquitos, Peru. Stool samples from 215 children with diarrhea and 50 stool samples from children without diarrhea under the age of two were evaluated using a multiplex qPCR assay to detect Campylobacter spp. (16S rRNA), Campylobacter jejuni / Campylobacter coli (cadF gene), C. infans (lpxA), and Shigella spp. (ipaH). C. infans was detected in 7.9% (17/215) symptomatic samples and 4.0% (2/50) asymptomatic samples. The association between diarrhea and the presence of these targets was evaluated using univariate logistic regressions. C. infans was not associated with diarrhea. Fifty-one percent (75/146) of Campylobacter positive fecal samples were negative for C. jejuni, C. coli, and C. infans via qPCR. Shotgun metagenomics confirmed the presence of C. infans among 13 out of 14 positive C. infans positive stool samples. C infans explained only 20.7% of the diagnostic gap in stools from children with diarrhea and 16.7% of the gap in children without diarrhea. We posit that poor cadF primer performance better explains the observed gap than the prevalence of atypical non-C. jejuni/coli species. Simple Summary: Wildlife may be zoonotic carriers of pathogens. The aim of this paper was to investigate the presence of Campylobacter (C.) jejuni and C. coli, which are responsible for enteric syndromes and sometimes extraintestinal diseases in humans, in wild birds housed at a wildlife rescue centre. Sensitivity to antibiotics was also investigated in the detected strains. Two hundred and nine birds belonging to 33 different species were considered in the study. Campylobacter was found in 52 birds (24.88%), mainly in omnivorous species. In terms of housing conditions, the infection rate was higher in birds housed in indoor (57.14%) than in outdoor aviaries (31.74%). Interestingly, Campylobacter was not detected in some species whose mean temperature body was below 40 °C or higher than 42.2 °C. All detected strains were C. jejuni except for three C. coli that were identified in Long-eared Owls. The most commonly found antibiotic resistance was against drugs such as trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin. Multi-drug resistance against two or more antibiotics was also detected. The findings of the study highlight the relevance of increasing biosecurity measures at the wildlife rescue centres to reduce health risks to staff involved in wildlife management. Climate change, excessive exploitation of agricultural land which reduces natural habitats, wildlife shooting, and the use of pesticides all cause difficulties for wildlife, with considerable numbers of animals being brought to wildlife rescue centres. Although the efforts of staff involved in wildlife management at these centres usually focus on therapeutic treatments to reintroduce them into the wild, the monitoring of pathogens that may be transmitted to humans is of relevance. Campylobacter (C.) jejuni and C. coli are frequently carried by animals without inducing clinical signs and are responsible for enteric disorders and more rarely extra-intestinal disease in humans. Broiler meat is widely known as an important source of foodborne Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli infections in humans. In this study, we thoroughly investigated transmission pathways that may contribute to possible Campylobacter contamination inside and outside broiler houses. For this purpose we carried out a comprehensive longitudinal sampling approach, using a semi-quantitative cultivation method to identify and quantify transmissions and reservoirs of Campylobacter spp.. Three german broiler farms in Brandenburg and their surrounding areas were intensively sampled, from April 2018 until September 2020. Consecutive fattening cycles and intervening downtimes after cleaning and disinfection were systematically sampled in summer and winter. To display the potential phylogeny of barn and environmental isolates, whole genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatic analyses were performed. Results obtained in this study showed very high Campylobacter prevalence in 51/76 pooled feces (67.1%) and 49/76 boot swabs (64.5%). Average counts between 6.4 to 8.36 log10MPN/g were detected in pooled feces. In addition, levels of 4.7 and 4.1 log10MPN/g were detected in boot swabs and litter, respectively. Samples from the barn interior showed mean Campyloacter values in swabs from drinkers 2.6 log10MPN/g, walls 2.0 log10MPN/g, troughs 1.7 log10MPN/g, boards 1.6 log10MPN/g, ventilations 0.9 log10MPN/g and 0.7 log10MPN/g for air samples. However, Campylobacter was detected only in 7/456 (1.5%) of the environmental samples (water bodies, puddles or water-filled wheel tracks; average of 0.6 log10MPN/g). Furthermore, WGS showed recurring Campylobacter genotypes over several consecutive fattening periods, indicating that Campylobacter genotypes persist in the environment during downtime periods. However, after cleaning and disinfection of the barns, we were unable to identify potential sources in the broiler houses. Interestingly, alternating Campylobacter genotypes were observed after each fattening period, also indicating sources of contamination from the wider environment outside the farm. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that a potential risk of Campylobacter transmission may originate from present environmental sources (litter and water reservoirs). Campylobacter spp. are a major cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and are associated with high rates of mortality and linear growth faltering in children living in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are most often the causative agents of enteric disease among children in LMICs. However, previous work on a collection of stool samples from children under 2 years of age, living in a low resource community in Peru with either acute diarrheal disease or asymptomatic, were found to be qPCR positive for Campylobacter species but qPCR negative for C. jejuni and C. coli. The goal of this study was to determine if whole-genome shotgun metagenomic sequencing (WSMS) could identify the Campylobacter species within these samples. The Campylobacter species identified in these stool samples included C. jejuni, C. coli, C. upsaliensis, C. concisus, and the potential new species of Campylobacter, "Candidatus Campylobacter infans". Moreover, WSMS results demonstrate that over 65% of the samples represented co-infections with multiple Campylobacter species present in a single stool sample, a novel finding in human populations. Campylobacteriosis is an emerging zoonotic enteric disease that poses a threat to both human health and animal productivity. Poultry is known as the primary reservoir of Campylobacter, and 90% of human Campylobacteriosis is caused by Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. This is complicated by the worldwide emergence of Campylobacter strains that are resistant to commonly used antimicrobial compounds. In this study, we determined the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Campylobacter coli isolated from cloacal swabs collected from broilers and layers in Mwanza and Arusha, Tanzania. We collected 402 cloacal swabs from broilers and layers. Then, samples were enriched into Bolton Broth supplemented with 5% laked horse blood. Campylobacter was isolated and confirmed by PCR. Antibiogram was done by disk diffusion method using six antibiotics i.e., ampicillin, nalidixic acid, gentamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. Of the 402 samples, 31 (7.71%) were confirmed to be Campylobacter coli by PCR. In Mwanza, the overall prevalence was 6.5% (6% and 7% in broilers and layers, respectively), while in Arusha, the overall prevalence was 8.9% (10.8% and 7% in broilers and layers, respectively). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that 80.6%, 16.1%, 9.7%, 9.7%, 6.5%, and 3.2% were resistant to ampicillin, nalidixic acid, erythromycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and gentamycin, respectively. The rate of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to at least one antimicrobial was 100%. Three out of thirty-one (9.7%) isolates were multidrug- resistant to four different antimicrobial compounds, each with different patterns. A symbiotic or mixed animal husbandry (e.g., pigs and chickens) is considered to have a positive effect for animal welfare and sustainable agriculture. On the other hand, a risk of infection and transmission of microorganisms, especially of zoonotic pathogens, between animal species may potentially occur and thus might increase the risk of foodborne illnesses for consumers. To prove these assumptions, two groups of animals and their environmental (soil) samples were investigated in this study. Animals were kept in a free-range system. In the first group, pigs and chickens were reared together (pasture 1), while the other group contained only pigs (pasture 2). During a one-year study, fecal swab samples of 240 pigs and 120 chickens, as well as 120 ground samples, were investigated for the presence of Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp. and E. coli. Altogether, 438 E. coli and 201 Campylobacter spp. strains were isolated and identified by MALDI-TOF MS. Salmonella spp. was not isolated from any of the sample types. The prevalences of Campylobacter coli and C. jejuni in pigs were 26.7% and 3.3% in pasture 1 and 30.0% and 6.7% in pasture 2, while the prevalences of C. coli and C. jejuni in chickens from pasture 1 were 9.2% and 78.3%, respectively. No correlation between the rearing type (mixed vs. pigs alone) and the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. was observed. All swab samples were positive for E. coli, while the average prevalences in soil samples were 78.3% and 51.7% in pasture 1 and 2, respectively. Results of similarity analysis of the MALDI-TOF MS spectra (for C. coli, C. jejuni and E. coli) and FT-IR spectra (for E. coli) of the same bacterial species showed no recognizable correlations, no matter if strains were isolated from chickens, pig or soil samples or isolated at different sampling periods. The results of the study indicate that the symbiotic husbandry of pigs and chickens neither results in an increased risk of a transmission of Campylobacter spp. or E. coli, nor in a risk of bacterial alteration, as shown by MALDI-TOF MS and FT-IR spectra. Campylobacter food-borne infections are a serious public health problem. In Benin, there is a proliferation of pork consumption in several forms. This study aims to determine the prevalence and the antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from pig guts, pig feces, and surface swabs from the cutting tables in southern Benin. For this purpose, 200 samples of pig guts, 40 samples of swabs from the cutting table surface, and 8 samples of pig feces were collected and subjected to bacteriological examination. The method used for the identification of bacteria was microbiological culture combined with molecular identification by PCR. The identified strains were then subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing according to the methodology recommended by the EUCAST. Antibiotic profiles were compared between strains isolated from pig guts, pig feces, and cutting table surfaces on the one hand and among the different sampling sites on the other hand. The results obtained show that 47.6% of the samples analyzed were contaminated by Campylobacter spp. Molecular identification revealed 34.7% of Campylobacter coli and 9.3% of Campylobacter jejuni. The study of antimicrobial susceptibility showed resistance to ciprofloxacin, 44% to ampicillin, 23.9% to erythromycin, 11% to gentamicin, and 10.1% to amoxicillin + clavulanic acid. In total, 90.8% of the isolated Campylobacter strains were multidrug resistant. The use of antimicrobials in livestock production systems has increased considerably, which could explain, at least partially, the prevalence of Campylobacter and the resistance of strains to antibiotics. To limit the risk of Campylobacter food-borne infections, it is therefore important to include Campylobacter in the list of pathogens to be tested during sanitary quality control of meat and meat products in Benin. Antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) have been used as feed additives to improve feed efficiency in food animals for more than six decades. However, the wide use of AGPs has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens of animal origin, posing a significant threat to food safety and public health. China prohibited the addition of AGPs to animal feed from July 2020. The impacts caused by the withdrawal of AGPs on the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of foodborne pathogens have not been illustrated. Here, a total of 471 strains of Campylobacter were isolated from pigs from three pig farms and two slaughterhouses in Sichuan Province for 4 consecutive years (2018-2021), including 2 years before and 2 years after the ban on AGPs in China. The isolation rate of Campylobacter had a slight increase after prohibiting the addition of AGPs to the feed. Contrary to what we expected, the antibiotic susceptibility test and WGS data showed that the antibiotic resistance to gentamicin and florfenicol and the abundance of virulence genes increased significantly after the ban of AGPs. Comparison of the isolates of swine origin with isolates of human origin indicated the potential of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter transmission from pigs to humans. These data suggested that phasing out AGPs may lead to increased use of therapeutic antimicrobials, promoting the prevalence and transmission of both antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. The risk of zoonosis transmission when handling livestock or animal products is substantial, 'One Health' interventions should be an effective strategy for the control of many zoonotic bacteria. In this study, 26 fresh fecal samples from 2 clinically healthy goats were collected at different day ages to survey goat-borne zoonotic bacterial infection, and 19 fresh fecal samples from diarrhetic goats were tested to evaluate the possible role of zoonotic pathogens in goat diarrhea. Following all samples were analyzed by Metagenomic Sequencing, a total of 20 kinds of zoonotic bacteria were screened from healthy goats, and 11 (55%) of them were infection mainly during the preweaned period. Of the 19 fresh fecal samples from diarrhetic goats, all were confirmed to be zoonotic bacterial infection positive (range from 11 to 12 species). After comparison with healthy samples of the same or similar day-age goats, it was found that Lactococcus garvieae, Helicobacter pylori, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella sonnei, Shigella boydii, Campylobacter coli, Salmonella enterica, Acinetobacter baumannii, Shigella flexneri, Shigella dysenteriae and Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter fetus were highly increased incases in some diarrheic cases, while the remains had no significant change. The results suggest that goats may act as a reservoir for many zoonotic bacteria, and some of them may be associated with goat intestinal inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Broiler chickens are an important source of Campylobacter to humans and become colonized on the farm, but the role of the litter in the ecology of Campylobacter is still not clear. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between Campylobacter and the changes in the litter microbiome throughout the broiler production cycle. Twenty-six commercial broiler flocks representing two production types (small and big broilers) were followed from 1 to 2 weeks after placement to the end of the production cycle. Composite litter samples from the broiler chicken house were collected weekly. Litter DNA was extracted and used for Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli qPCR as well as for 16S rRNA gene V4 region sequencing. Campylobacter jejuni concentration in litter significantly differed by production type and flock age. Campylobacter jejuni concentration in litter from big broilers was 2.4 log10 units higher, on average, than that of small broilers at 3 weeks of age. Sixteen amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) differentially abundant over time were detected in both production types. A negative correlation of Campylobacter with Bogoriella and Pseudogracilibacillus was observed in the litter microbiome network at 6 weeks of flock age. Dynamic Bayesian networks provided evidence of negative associations between Campylobacter and two bacterial genera, Ornithinibacillus and Oceanobacillus, at 2 and 4 weeks of flock age, respectively. In conclusion, dynamic associations between Campylobacter and the litter microbiome were observed during grow-out, suggesting a potential role of the litter microbiome in the ecology of Campylobacter colonization and persistence on farm. Worldwide, farm animals, in particular poultry, are an important reservoir for Campylobacter spp. However, information on Campylobacter colonization in farm animals in Africa is scarce. Hence, this cross-sectional study determined antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter from both commercial and smallholder farm animals in the Asante Akim North Municipality of Ghana. Fecal samples from poultry and livestock kept by commercial and smallholder farms were collected and analyzed using standard microbiological methods. The overall Campylobacter frequency was 20.3% (n/N = 322/1,585), and frequencies detected were similarly high in isolates from commercial (21.0%, n/N = 169/805) and smallholder (19.6%, n/N = 153/780) farms. Species isolated were C. coli (67.7%, n/N = 218/322) and C. jejuni (32.3%, n/N = 104/322). However, the frequency of C. coli was 2.1 (95% CI: 1.8–2.5) times higher than what was found for C. jejuni. Campylobacter frequencies in the rainy season was 22.2% (n/N = 258/1,160) and 15.1% (n/N = 64/425) in the dry season (prevalence ratio = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.2–1.9). About 1.7% (n/N = 6/322) of the Campylobacter isolates, all from smallholder farms, were susceptible to all antibiotics tested. Multidrug resistance was observed for 4.7% (n/N = 15/322) of the Campylobacter isolates, of which 93.3% (n/N = 14/15) occurred in isolates from commercial farms. This study highlights the need for the implementation of control programs, in commercial farming but also at the smallholder farm level, to formulate clear guidelines aimed at decreasing Campylobacter contamination of meat products and reducing the use of antibiotics in the farming sector.

Background and aims: Gastritis is basically caused by Campylobacter coli and jejuni, and usually occures after the consumption of raw animal products. Methods: This study investigated the prevalence, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter species isolated from slaughtered animals in Juneqan, Farrokhshahr, Saman, and Lordegan slaughterhouses in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province of Iran. From 40 camels, 5 samples of liver, neck meat, kidney, heart, and rectal contents were taken from each carcass. The obtained samples were cultured and then the PCR was performed for them and, finally, the toxin genes of virulence and resistance against antibiotics were examined. Results: Out of 19 Campylobacter specimens isolated, 8 specimens were coli and 11 ones were jejuni. It was also found that the infection with Campylobacter in the carcasses was the highest in warmer seasons. Conclusion: The carcasses of slaughtered animals in slaughterhouses were likely a potential reservoir for coli and jejuni species, and their viscera and meat could have transmitted these bacteria to humans and animals.

Pigs are known as the main Campylobacter coli reservoirs. Campylobacteriosis, the most commonly reported gastrointestinal disease in humans, is mainly caused by the consumption of poultry meat, and little is known about the role of pork. Pigs are often associated with C. coli, including antimicrobial-resistant isolates. Therefore, the entire pork production chain must be considered as an important source of antimicrobial-resistant C. coli. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter spp. isolated from caecal samples of fattening pigs at the Estonian slaughterhouse level over a five-year period. The proportion of Campylobacter-positive caecal samples was 52%. All Campylobacter isolates were identified as C. coli. A high proportion of the isolates were resistant to most of the studied antimicrobials. The resistance to streptomycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid was 74.8%, 54.4%, 34.4% and 31.9%, respectively. In addition, a high proportion (15.1%) of the isolates were multidrug-resistant and, in total, 93.3% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial.

The objective of this study was to determine prevalence and perform genomic analysis of Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. isolated from different stages of an integrated NAE broiler complex. Environmental samples were screened with 3M-Molecular Detection System (MDS) and MDS positive samples were further processed for confirmation of results and identification. Core genome-based phylogenies were built for both bacteria isolated from this study along with selected NCBI genomes. The odds ratios and 95% confidence limits were compared among stages and sample types (α < 0.05) using multivariable model. Based on MDS results, 4% and 18% of total samples were positive for Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. respectively. The odds of Salmonella detection in hatchery samples were 2.58 times as likely as compared to its detection in production farms' samples (P = 0.151) while the odds of Campylobacter detection in production farms' samples were 32.19 times as likely as its detection in hatchery (P = 0.0015). Similarly, the odds of Campylobacter detection in boot swabs, soil, water, and miscellaneous samples were statistically significant (P < 0.05) as compared with fly paper as reference group. The serovars identified for Salmonella were Typhimurium, Barranquilla, Liverpool, Kentucky, Enteritidis, Luciana, and Rough_O:r:1,5. For Campylobacter, the species identified were Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Phylogeny results show close genetic relatedness among bacterial strains isolated from different locations within the same stage and between different stages. The results show possibility of multiple entry points of such bacteria entering broiler complex and can potentially contaminate the final raw product in the processing plant. It suggests the need for a comprehensive control strategy with strict biosecurity measures and best management practices to minimize or eliminate such pathogens from the poultry food chain. Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) of infectious disease agents is increasingly seen as a reliable source of population health data. To date, wastewater-based surveillance efforts have largely focused on individual pathogens. However, given that wastewater contains a broad range of pathogens circulating in the population, a more comprehensive approach could enhance its usability. We focused on the simultaneous detection of SARS-CoV-2, sapovirus, Campylobacter jejuni , Campylobacter coli , Salmonella spp., pathogenic Escherichia coli , C ryptosporidium spp., Giardia spp. and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of clinical relevance. To achieve this goal, biomass concentration and nucleic acid extraction methods were optimized, and samples were analyzed by using a set of (RT)-qPCR and (HT)-qPCR methods. We determined the prevalence and the spatial and temporal trends of the targeted pathogens and collected novel information on ARGs in Finnish wastewater. In addition, the use of different wastewater concentrates, namely the ultrafiltered concentrate of the supernatant and the centrifuged pellet, and the effect of freezing and thawing wastewater prior to sample processing were investigated with the indicator microbe crAssphage. Freeze-thawing of wastewater decreased the gene copy count of crAssphage in comparison to analyzing fresh samples (p < 0.001). Campylobacters were most abundant in two of the four studied summer months (30 % detection rate) and in wastewaters from regions with intensive animal farming. Salmonella , however, was detected in 40 % of the samples without any clear seasonal trends, and the highest gene copy numbers were recorded from the largest wastewater treatment plants. Beta-lactamase resistance genes that have commonly been detected in bacteria isolated from humans in Finland, namely bla CTX-M , bla OXA48 , bla NDM , and bla KPC , were also frequently detected in wastewaters (100, 98, 98, and 70 % detection rates, respectively). Background: Campylobacter (C.) species are the most common bacterial cause of foodborne diarrhea in humans. Despite colonization, most animals do not show clinical signs, making recognition of affected flocks and disruption of the infection chain before slaughter challenging. Turkeys are often cocolonized with C. jejuni and C. coli. To understand the pathogen-host-interaction in the context of two different Campylobacter species, we compared the colonization patterns and quantities in mono- and co-colonized female commercial turkeys. In three repeated experiments we investigated the impact on gut morphology, functional integrity, and microbiota composition as parameters of gut health at seven, 14, and 28 days post-inoculation. Results: Despite successful Campylobacter colonization, clinical signs or pathological lesions were not observed. C. coli persistently colonized the distal intestinal tract and at a higher load compared to C. jejuni. Both strains were isolated from livers and spleens, occurring more frequently in C. jejuni- and co-inoculated turkeys. Especially in C. jejuni-positive animals, translocation was accompanied by local heterophil infiltration, villus blunting, and shallower crypts. Increased permeability and lower electrogenic ion transport of the cecal mucosa were also observed. A lower relative abundance of Clostridia UCG-014, Lachnospiraceae, and Lactobacillaceae was noted in all inoculated groups compared to controls. Conclusions: In sum, C. jejuni affects gut health and may interfere with productivity in turkeys. Despite a higher cecal load, the impact of C. coli on investigated parameters was less pronounced. Interestingly, gut morphology and functional integrity were also less affected in co-inoculated animals while the C. jejuni load decreased over time, suggesting C. coli may outcompete C. jejuni. Since a microbiota shift was observed in all inoculated groups, future Campylobacter intervention strategies may involve stabilization of the gut microbiota, making it more resilient to Campylobacter colonization in the first place. In 2009, the burden of illness study for acute gastroenteritis in Trinidad and Tobago highlighted that ~10% of stool samples tested were positive for a foodborne pathogen. The study also noted that limited laboratory screening for pathogens contributed to a lack of etiology as public health hospitals only routinely tested for Salmonella and Shigella, and sometimes for Escherichia coli and Campylobacter. To better understand the foodborne pathogens responsible for acute gastroenteritis, enhanced testing using the BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal PCR panel was used to screen diarrheal stool samples for 22 pathogens from patients in 2018. The five general public health hospitals (San Fernando, Mt. Hope, Port of Spain, Sangre Grande, and Tobago) were notified of research activities and diarrheal stool samples were collected from all acute gastroenteritis patients. A total of 66 stools were screened and ~30% of samples tested positive for a foodborne pathogen. The current study showed that a much wider range of enteric pathogens were associated with acute gastroenteritis in Trinidad and Tobago than previously reported in 2009. These findings can be used by health officials to guide appropriate interventions, as well as to provide evidence for adoption of the PCR panel detection method at public health hospitals to benefit patient care. We investigated the prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Salmonella, en-terohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Escherichia albertii in domestic chicken and pork sold at retail stores in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Campylobacter was detected in 35.7% (60/168)of chicken samples and 7.3% (14/190)of pork samples. C. jejuni and C. coli were predominant in chicken and pork, respectively. Salmonella was found in 58.1% (100/172)of chicken samples and 19.9% (41/206)of pork samples. Moreover, Salmonella Schwarzengrund was the major serovar observed in chicken isolates, whereas S. Ty-phimurium monophasic variant was in pork isolates. Furthermore, ETEC was found in 0.6% (1/160)of chicken samples and 2.4% (5/206)of pork samples. Y. enterocolitica was absent from all (83/83)chicken samples but was present in 9.3% (18/193)of pork samples, with a prevalence in pork tongues as high as 21.0% (13/62 samples). However, EHEC and E. albertii were not detected in our study. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that chicken was highly contaminated with Campylobacter sp. and Salmonella, and pork was with Y. enterocolitica serotype o3, Campylobacter sp., Salmonella, and ETEC. Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter can be transmitted through raw milk and cause foodborne illness. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Campylobacter and pathogenic species of Salmonella spp. species in raw cow's milk using molecular method in Mazandaran province. 100 samples of raw milk were randomly collected from traditional milk collection and retail centers in Mazandaran province in 2019. All samples were transferred as soon as possible to the microbiology laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Amol University of Special Modern Technologies, in sterile containers and in suitable cold chain conditions. DNA was extracted from milk samples using a commercial kit and then the polymerase chain reaction was performed using appropriate primers to identify Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli and Salmonella . Out of 100 samples, 7 samples (7%) were infected with Campylobacter jejuni, no positive sample of Campylobacter coli was observed and 2 samples (2%) were infected with Salmonella . According to the results of the present study and the presence of the mentioned bacteria in milk, it is necessary to observe the hygienic principles in the dairy industry, processing and use of sufficient heat to eliminate the mentioned bacteria in raw milk and also use fast and accurate methods to identify These bacteria. Due to the global decline of bacterial antimicrobial sensitivity, international organizations such as Word Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Organization for Animal Health consider it necessary to implement an integrative approach to the fight against antibiotic resistance in the light of the One Health concept. The purpose of the study was to investigate the degree of interchangeability of the antibiotic resistance of the isolated microbiome from wild boars and their living environment. The samples (n=24) were collected from two hunting funds in Covasna and Cluj counties. The identification of microorganisms was performed using the Vitek®2 System and, subsequently, their susceptibility was evaluated using the agar diffusion method. The isolated strains were identified as Pseudomonas spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas luteola, Brevibacterium spp., Aerococcus viridans, Aeromonas sobria, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter lari, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus suis. The highest multiple antibiotic resistance index (MAR 0.666) was identified in strains isolated from Cluj County, while the lowest (MAR 0.111) was obtained in strains isolated from Covasna County.
