An underlying assumption of statistical appraisal equations is that property values are linear in the quantity of structural or other property attributes. Such an assumption may be unwarranted. In this article a method for evaluating the adequacy of linear and other simple functions, based on the Lagrange Multiplier testing principle, is proposed. Unlike some other procedures, this method requires the same kind of computer software used to construct the original appraisal equation. The article includes an empirical example of the testing method. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
