A new significant mammal fossil from the Marino Formation in the area of Divisadero Largo (Mendoza, Argentina) is described herein. The material consists of a mandibular fragment with the right series p4-m3 of the rodent Scleromys sp. It is compared with the Santacrucian species S. osbornianus Ameghino and S. angustus Ameghino, and with S. quadrangulatus Kramarz from the Pinturas Formation, all of them from the Santa Cruz Province. At the same time, the studied fossil presents a combination of characters that differ from those species: more transverse molars, with anterior wall slightly curved, lower degree of hypsodonty and smaller size. However, due to the great morphological variation within Scleromys, a specific determination is not provided based on a sole specimen. The presence of this genus, together with the previously studied mesotheriine, supports an early Miocene age for the middle member of the Marino Formation Se describe un nuevo resto de mamífero procedente de la Formación Marino en el área de Divisadero Largo (Mendoza, Argentina). Corresponde a un fragmento mandibular de roedor, con la serie p4-m3 derecha, identificado como Scleromys sp. Se lo compara con las especies santacrucenses, S. osbornianus Ameghino y S. angustus Ameghino de la Formación Santa Cruz y la S. quadrangulatus Kramarz de la Formación Pinturas, todas ellas de la Provincia de Santa Cruz. El ejemplar de Mendoza presenta una combinación de caracteres propia (molares más transversos, con la pared anterior ligeramente curva; menor desarrollo de la hipsodoncia; tamaño más pequeño) que lo diferencian de las especies anteriores. Sin embargo, debido a la gran variación morfológica observada en el género, se prefirió no hacer una determinación específica basada en un único ejemplar. This paper presents a brief review on the studies of the Order Perissodactyla from the Spanish Neogene. References begin with the first records during the XIX century, and continue until present, summarizing the progress and knowledge of this conspicuous group of mammals in Spain. The paper focuses mainly on families Equidae and Rhinocerotidae, whose remains are very abundant and have a large temporal distribution, giving place to a huge amount of documentation. More scarce references concern families Tapiridae and Chalicotheriidae, owing to their more restricted records., En el presente trabajo, se realiza una breve historia del estudio de los Perisodáctilos del Neógeno de España. Abarca las distintas vicisitudes de estos estudios desde las primeras citas de su presencia en suelo español durante el siglo XIX hasta nuestros días. Se enfoca principalmente en los representantes de las familias Equidae y Rhinocerothidae, que están ampliamente representadas a lo largo y ancho de la Península y sobre los que hay abundante documentación. Más brevemente, se trata la Familia Tapiridae, cuyo registro es mucho más restringido, y se hace mención de la Familia Chalicotheriidae que, aunque muy escasa, también está presente en la Península Ibérica., El trabajo se ha realizado dentro del proyecto CGL 2004-00400BTE.

[ES]En este trabajo, se ha realizado la recopilación de los restos fósiles de mamíferos procedentes de los yacimientos pleistocenos de la cornisa cantábrica que se encuentran depositados en las colecciones del MNCN de Madrid. Se han revisado ejemplares de 57 localidades de Asturias, Cantabria y País Vasco, actualizando las listas faunísticas. The taphonomic results on the fossil macromammal assemblage from Caleufú (La Pampa Province, Argentina) are presented. The fossiliferous level corresponds to the Cerro Azul Formation, Late Miocene in age. Among the different outcrops of this formation, Caleufú presents the greatest concentration of fossils, with a density of 4,1 remains/m2. Most fossils were recovered on surface over an area of 1590 m2. Identifyed remains (3200) include reptiles, undetermined birds, and many mammals. Macromammals are represented by a minimal number of individuals of 26 and at least 17 taxa, showing a high diversity, detaching that 11 of these taxa are Xenarthra. Most mammal remains are very fragmented and broken, and just 13 basipodial elements are complete. Only two hemimandibles, a maxillary fragment and a few isolated teeth are well preserved. Indeterminable studied fragments (638) are relatively small sized, and cubic morphologies predominate. Most specimens show a high degree of weathering. The observed taphonomic attributes can be explained by a long exposition to environmental factors before the burial process. However, some bones show lichen corrosion, which would indicate moments of reexposition. Abrasion is scarcely present and only on some mineralized bones with sediment infilling. The taphonomic analysis concludes that specimens resulted from accumulation of skeletal elements from different animals that died in the area during a long period of time, corresponding to the time of developing soil. Diversity would be the result of condensation of remains coming from succesive autochtonous comunities

Mammal turnover in the Quaternary of Argentina. The preliminary analysis of the evolutionary faunal pattern points out two different turnover times. The first one is characterized by a high percentage of autochthonous extinctions. This event marks the beginning of the main decrease of the percentage of extinctions and new appearances of autochthonous forms. In this span of time, placed between the last Chapadmalalan and first Ensenadan faunas, it is possible to identify a high percentage of new immigrant genera from North America. The second one is associated to the last Pleistocene faunal extinction. There is a great increase of autochthonous and immigrant genera before this event. This extinction affected mainly the autochthonous mammals and the immigrant families which are well represented in the recent fauna, with the exception of Equidae and Gomphotheriidae. We suppose these major faunistic turnovers may be linked to climatic events ; we try to compare biotic events with global climatic changes. From this point of view, we may correlate the first turnover to the major climatic deterioration placed about 2.5-2.3 Ma. The second turnover took place in the Ensenadan and Lujanian ages and this may be interpreted in two different ways : a) as linked to a climatic improvement followed by a quite long time of stable climatic conditions ; b) as linked to a long sequence characterized by oscillations which are short in time but broad in amplitude. In the first hypothesis the quoted event is comprised between 2.0 and 1.5 Ma, while in the second one it is referred to the beginning of the «Glacial Pleistocene», about 1.0-0.8 Ma in age., Changement faunistique dans le Quaternaire de l'Argentine. Les résultats préliminaires sur l'évolution faunique rendent évident deux changements climatiques principaux. Le premier est caractérisé par un haut pourcentage d'extinction dans les clades autochtones ; il marque le commencement d'une importante diminution du taux des extinctions et apparitions des formes autochtones. Cette époque, placée entre les faunes du Chapadmalalien supérieur et les plus anciennnes de l'Ensénadien, peut être identifiée par un taux croissant de nouveaux genres immigrants de l'Amérique du Nord. Le deuxième est associé avec la dernière extinction des mammifères pendant le Pléistocène. D'abord la faune est caractérisée par un taux croissant des clades autochtones et des genres immigrants. Cette extinction affecte principalement les mammifères autochtones et les familles immigrantes qui sont bien représentées dans la faune récente, excepté les Equidae et les Gomphotheriidae. On peut supposer que les changements faunistiques les plus importants sont liés à des facteurs climatiques ; nous comparons ici les événements biotiques avec les changements climatiques globaux. De ce point de vue, nous pouvons rapporter le premier changement à la plus importante détérioration climatique placée environ à 2.5-2.3 Ma. Le deuxième changement eût lieu pendant l'Ensénadien et le Lujanien. Il peut être interprété dans deux sens différents : a) lié à une amélioration climatique suivie d'une période de temps assez longue avec conditions climatiques stables ; b) lié à une longue séquence caractérisée par des oscillations courtes mais de grande amplitude. Dans la première hypothèse, l'événement est situé entre 2.0 et 1.5 Ma, tandis que dans la deuxième, il est rapporté au commencement du «Pléistocène Glacial», soit à environ 1.0-0.8 Ma., De las comunidades faunísticas analizadas se deduce que hay dos recambios faunísticos importantes. El primero está caracterizado por un alto porcentaje de extinciones de formas autóctonas. Este primer recambio marca el comienzo de una importante reductión del porcentaje de extinciones y nuevas apariciones de formas autóctonas. Durante este periodo de tiempo, situado entre las faunas del final del Chapadmalalense y el inicio del Ensenadense, es posible identificar un alto porcentaje de nuevos géneros inmigrantes procedentes de América del Norte. El segundo está asociado a la última extinción de mamíferos del Pleistoceno. Antes de este acontecimiento hay un gran aumento de géneros autoctonos e inmigrantes. Esta extincion afecto principalmente a los mamiferos autóctonos y las familias inmigrantes, las cuales están bien representadas en la fauna reciente, excepto Equidae y Gomphotheridae. Creemos que estos importantes recambios faunísticos están ligados a factores climáticos ; por ello, comparamos los acontecimientos bióticos con los cambios climáticos globales. Desde este punto de vista, podemos correlacionar el primer recambio faunístico con el más importante deterioro climático situado en torno a 2.5-2.3 Ma. El segundo recambio debió tener lugar durante el Ensenadense y el Lujanense y puede ser interpretado de dos maneras diferentes : a) ligado a una mejora climática seguida de un espacio de tiempo más o menos largo con condiciones climáticas estables ; b) ligado a una larga secuencia caracterizada por oscilaciones cortas en tiempo pero de mayor amplitud. 6 páginas, 11 tablas., [ES] El yacimiento del Pleistoceno Superior de Cueva Millán (Burgos, España) ha sido objeto de diversas campañas de excavación, desde 1980. Esta cueva ha proporcionado numerosos restos arqueológicos musterienses, correspondientes al Paleolítico Medio y con una edad absoluta de 37.600 ± 700 años. Esta industria aparece junto a una variada asociación faunística. Durante la última excavación, en 1986, se obtuvo la muestra de macromamíferos más abundante, sobre la cual se ha realizado el análisis faunístico que se presenta en este trabajo., [EN] Different field seasons have been carried out at the Upper Pleistocene site of Cueva Millán (Burgos, Spain) from 1980. This cave has provided Mousterian archaeological remains corresponding to the Middle Paleolithic, with an absolute age of 37.000 ± 700 years. This industry appears together with a varied faunal association. During the last digging in 1986 the most abundant macromammal assemblage was recovered, and this is the subject of the faunal analysis presented in this paper.

Se compara morfológica y biométricamente con H. grimmi e H. matritense y se establece su sinonimia con H. grimmi., [EN] The taxonomic validity of the species Hispanotherium alpani Sarac 1978 is questioned. This species, defined in the Yeni Eskihisar site from the Middle Miocene of Turkey, is compared morphological and biometrically with H. grimmi and H. matritense. It is established as synonyme of H. grimmi.

The analysis of micro - and macromammal faunas from the Guadix-Baza Basin allow us to establish an almost continuous biostratigraphical sequence. The age of the faunal sequence ranges from the Early Ruscinian (MN 14) to the Middle-Late Pleistocene. The sequence is correlated to other Spanish and European localities., Resumen: El análisis de las faunas de micro - y macromamíferos de la cuenca Guadix-Baza nos permite establecer una secuencia bioestratigráfica casi continua. La edad de la secuencia está comprendida entre el Rusciniense inferior (MN 14) hasta el Pleistoceno Medio avanzado. La secuencia se correlaciona con otras localidades españolas y europeas.

Establecemos una evolución en el tiempo que implica una disminución general de la talla, manteniendo las proporciones y la morfología. Reconocemos L. sansaniensis en los yacimientos de Can Mas y Buñol, lo cual aumenta la distribución geográfica y estratigráfica de la especie., [EN] Some characteristics of the postcraneal skeleton of Lartetotherium sansaniensis are summarized in this paper, resulting form the comparative study of the Spanish remains of theis species and those from the type locality, Sansan (France). We have established an evolutive process involving a general decrease of size without changing proportions and morphology. We have recognized L. sansaniensis in Can Mas and Buñol, which increases the stratigraphical and geographical distribution of this species.

The tapirid species Protapirus cetinensis was recently described upon a few dentary remains coming from the sites of Cetina de Aragón (Zaragoza) y Valquemado (Cuenca). The excavation carried out in summer 1987 in Valquemado has yielded the first postcraneal element of Tapiridae from the Spanish Lower Miocene. lt is a third metatarsal of a young individual that lacks the distal epiphysis. lt is a very long bone that shows a very greater gracility than the extant Tapirus terrestris, the only species we have some direct data. P. aginensis from La Milloque (Francia) is also a slender tapir but the metapode we have studied is not homologous to that of Valquemado, La especie de tapírido Protapirus cetinensis fue recientemente descrita a partir de restos dentales provenientes de los yacimientos de Cetina de Aragón (Zaragoza) y Valquemado (Cuenca). La excavación se llevó a cabo en el verano de 1987 en Valquemado y ha cedido el primer elemento postcraneal de tapiridae del Bajo Mioceno español. Se trata de un tercer metatarso de un individuo joven al que le falta la epífisis distal. Es un hueso muy largo que nos muestra una mayor esbeltez que el vigente Tapirus terrestris, la única especie de la que tenemos datos directos. El P. aginensis de La Milloque (Francia) es también un tapir esbelto, pero el metápodo que hemos estudiado no es homólogo al de Valquemado.

New finds of large mammal fossils in Crevillente-2 (Alicante) increase the diversity of Lower Turolian macromammals in Spain. The site is equivalent in age to Piera (Vallés Penedés, Catalonia) whose faunal remains have been so far the base for the knowledge of Spanish Lower Turolian large mammals. Main similarities between Crevillente-2 and Piera are in the presence of the same species of Plioviverrops, Hipparion, Dicerorhinus, Microstonyx, Birgerbohlinia and Tragoportax. The proboscidean abondance, the absence of Aceratherium, the different carnivore faunal association, the presence of a second giraffid and the cervids, in Crevillente, mark the differences with the catalonian site, Nuevos hallazgos de fósiles de grandes mamíferos en Crevillente-2 (Alicante) aumentan la diversidad de macromamíferos del bajo Turoliense en España. El yacimiento tiene una antigüedad equivalente a Piera (Vallés Penedés, Cataluña), cuyos restos de su fauna han sido, hasta ahora, la base del conocimiento de los grandes mamíferos del Bajo Turoliense español. Las principales semejanzas entre Crevillente-2 y Piera se encuentran en las mismas especies de Plioviverrops, Hipparion, Dicerorhinus, Microstonyx, Birgerbohlinia y Tragoportax. La abundancia de proboscidios, la ausencia de Aceratherium, la diferente asociación de fauna carnívora, la presencia de un segundo jiráfido y cérvido, en Crevillente, marcan la diferencia con el yacimiento catalán.
