101. The impact of international sanctions on innovation of target countries.

Abstract

This paper mainly presents a complete analysis of the impact of such sanctions on the innovation performance of target countries by exploiting the difference‐in‐differences method for panel data of 91 countries in the period 1988–2016. The empirical results confirm a significantly negative impact of overall international sanctions on innovation in the target countries; moreover, except for noneconomic sanctions, other types of sanctions have a negative impact on the level of innovation in the target countries to varying degrees. These findings are also supported by two semiparametric matchings: artificially matching according to the two factors of geographical location and land area respectively and the propensity score matching, one nonparametric matching: entropy balancing, as well as the system generalized method of moments estimates that account for any bias due to lagged dependent variables. This paper also shows that the significantly negative effect of international sanctions is manifested in the countries with high levels of trade openness, globalization, and democracy, but not in the countries with low levels of trade openness, globalization, and democracy. Abstract

This research explores the impact of monetary policy on the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE) through panel data of 30 countries from 1983 to 2018 by the bias-corrected fixed-effect dynamic (BCFE) model. We find that tight monetary policy negatively impacts the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE), which is still valid after a series of robustness tests. We then perform sub-sample regressions, and the results show that countries with higher government efficiency, higher financial development, and stricter environmental policy can reduce the negative impact of tightening monetary policy on total factor productivity and innovation efficiency. Our research illustrates that a tightening monetary policy not only adversely impacts total factor productivity but also influences the main driving force of its growth-innovation efficiency. 139. THE IMPACT OF MONETARY POLICY ON GREEN INNOVATION: GLOBAL EVIDENCE

Abstract

This research investigates and robustly verifies the impact of expansionary monetary policy actions on green innovation, conducted on a panel covering 133 countries from 1960 to 2018. Overall, we find that such actions have a significantly positive effect on green innovation performance, no matter in the static or dynamic model. A lower degree of central bank independence and poorer property rights protection in developing countries may hinder monetary policies’ effect to be transmitted to green innovation activities smoothly. Moreover, stringent environmental regulation contributes to magnifying the expansionary monetary policy’s positive effect on green innovation, but such a positive moderating effect should be supported by good national governance quality (including better control over corruption, higher efficiency of governments and a complete law system). Accordingly, several policy suggestions are provided.

145. THE EFFECTS OF INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS ON GREEN INNOVATIONS

Abstract

Since China is facing a complicated international situation and sustainable development requirement at the same time, this paper examines the effects of external uncertainty, international sanctions, on green innovations by adopting the system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation for 30 provinces (autonomous region and municipalities) from 1997 to 2019. We employ green inventions as the dependent variable and 5 indicators of sanctions (including unilateral, plurilateral, multilateral, economic, and intensity) as the main explanatory variables alternately. For further robustness tests, we use substitution variable green utility models, adopt sub-samples in different regions, change the empirical methodology, and add omitted variables. We also examine the mechanism effects of three possible channels. The conclusion is that plurilateral and economic sanctions both present significant negative impacts on green innovations, whereas China was not affected by unilateral or multilateral sanctions during the sample period. GDP, interpersonal globalization, and environment are proved to be the possible channels through which sanctions affect green innovations. Our research findings should assist Chinese-listed companies suffering from sanctions to make better responses on their way to green innovations. First published online 24 November 2022
