104. The Impact of Environmental Information Disclosure Quality on Loan Scale for Enterprises in China’s Heavy Polluting Industries

Abstract

In view of the importance of environmental accounting to ecological governance, this article attempts to study the economic consequences of environmental information disclosure quality (EID) from the perspective of bank financing. We assume that good environmental information disclosure quality can help companies obtain bank loan, and then test this conjecture through empirical methods. The data of 330 listed companies in China’s heavy polluting industries were collected, and then analysed by SPSS for regression. The result shows that EID is positively related to the scale of corporate bank loan, which means the improvement of EID can bring convenience when companies need bank loans. The research clarifies the financial consequences of EID and provides some enlightenment for the improvement of corporate environmental disclosure quality.

Abstract

Focusing on the quality of corporate environmental accounting information disclosure (EID), this paper attempts to explore the impact of financial performance on environmental information disclosure. We take listed companies in Chinese heavily polluting industries as the research object, and construct a multiple regression model for data analysis via SPSS. According to Chinese practice, we divide the financial indicators into four areas: solvency, operating capacity, profitability and development capacity, and select four indicators to represent them. The empirical results show that net working capital, current asset turnover and equity growth rate are positively correlated with EID, and return on total assets is negatively correlated with EID. This result means that the solvency, operating ability and development ability in financial performance can promote the improvement of EID, but profitability cannot.

106. Fermentation of feathers with Bacillussp. TC5 to simultaneous obtain keratinase and antioxidant-rich peptide products

Abstract

The poultry processing produces large quantities of feathers that are often discarded as waste, causing significant refuse and environmental pollution. However, utilizing microorganisms capable of degrading keratin to ferment feathers represents an effective way to repurpose feather waste. Bacillussp. TC5 isolated from alpine lake sediments of the Hengduan Mountains achieved a feather degradation rate of about 70% after 4 days of fermentation with feathers as the only carbon and nitrogen source. The culture conditions associated with keratinase production by Bacillussp. TC5 were optimized by Plackett-Burman design and response surface methodology (RSM), and the highest keratinase activity of 215.87 U/mL was predicted at a feather concentration of 1.72%, fermentation days of 3.68 days, and calcium concentration of 0.103%. Purified keratinase TC5 (KerTC5) has a molecular weight of approximately 30 kDa. It showed maximal activity at 55 °C and pH 9.5. Additionally, keratinase activity was enhanced by low concentrations of Mn2+(2.5 mM). The fermentation product showed significant radical scavenging ability and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging ability in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Obtained results indicate that feather fermentation products were not toxic to HUVECs in the concentration range of 50 to 500 µg/mL. These results suggested that Bacillussp. TC5 is suitable for converting the feather waste to value-added fermentation products.

Abstract

Ulcerative colitis (UC), affecting millions of patients worldwide, is associated with disorders of the gut microbiota. Probiotics‐based therapy positively regulating the community structure of gut microbiota is regarded as an efficient intervention for UC. However, oral probiotics delivery is restricted by limited bioactivity, short retention time, complex pathological condition, and single therapeutic efficacy. Here, a bioengineered probiotic decorated with a multifunctional prodrug coating is constructed to ameliorate the aforementioned shortcomings. The results of UC mice induced by dextran sulfate sodium demonstrate that the intrinsic features of the fabricated coating integrate gut microbes protection, colon‐targeted drug release, prolonged drug retention, and inflammation regulation. In parallel, the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) could regulate the composition of the gut microbiota and improve epithelial barrier function, thereby synergistically ameliorating UC. These results provide ample shreds of evidence of the therapeutic effect on UC, therefore, demonstrate a great promise as the potential therapeutic strategy for UC treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS1000) is the most active water-soluble derivative of vitamin E and has been widely used as a carrier of solvents, plasticizers, emulsifiers, absorbent agents and refractory drug delivery systems. However, its anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) properties have not been explored. HCC cells were treated with different concentrations of TPGS1000. Cell survival was tested by CCK8 assay, and cell migration was tested by wound healing and Transwell assay. EdU staining verified cell proliferation, and signalling pathway was assayed by Western blot analysis. The BALB/c-nu mouse xenograft model was established to test HCC cell growth in vivo. In vitro TPGS1000 significantly inhibited the viability and mobility of HCC cells (HepG2, Hep3B and Huh7) in a dose-dependent manner. Cell cycle analysis indicated that TPGS1000 treatment arrested the HCC cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase, and induction of cell apoptosis was confirmed by TUNEL and Annexin V-7-AAD staining. Further pharmacological analysis indicated that collapse of the transmembrane potential of mitochondria, increased ROS generation, PARP-induced cell apoptosis and FoxM1-p21-mediated cell cycle arresting, were involved in the anti-HCC activity of TPGS1000. Moreover, treatment in vivo with TPGS1000 effectively impaired the growth of HCC xenografts in nude mice.

Abstract

Background: Vaccination is considered as most efficient strategy in controlling SARS-CoV-2 pandemic spread. Nevertheless, patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases receiving rituximab (RTX) are at increased risk to fail humoral and cellular responses upon vaccination. The ability to predict vaccination responses is essential to guide adequate safety and optimal protection in these patients. Methods: B- and T- cell data before vaccination were evaluated for characteristics predicting vaccine responses in altogether 15 patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases receiving RTX. Eleven patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on other therapies, 11 kidney transplant recipients (KTR) on regular immunosuppression and 15 healthy controls (HC) served as controls. A multidimensional analysis of B cell subsets via UMAP algorithm and a correlation matrix were performed in order to identify predictive markers of response in patients under RTX therapy. Results: Significant differences regarding absolute B cell counts and specific subset distribution pattern between the groups were identified at baseline. In this context, the majority of B cells from vaccination responders of the RTX group (RTX IgG+) were naïve and transitional B cells, whereas vaccination non-responders (RTX IgG-) carried preferentially plasmablasts and double negative (CD27-IgD-) B cells. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between neutralizing antibodies and B cells expressing HLA-DR and CXCR5 as well as an inverse correlation with CD95 expression and CD21low expression by B cells among vaccination responders. Summary: Substantial repopulation of the naïve B cell compartment after RTX therapy appeared to be essential for an adequate vaccination response, which seem to require the additional capability of antigen presentation and germinal center formation. Moreover, expression of exhaustion markers represent negative predictors of vaccination responses.

Abstract

The study of commercial low-density polyethylenes (LDPEs) has always focused on the effects of the molecular architecture of the polymer on its shear and extensional rheological properties due to their direct influence on manufacturability. However, the complex morphology of industrial-grade LDPEs also affects the crystallization kinetics and dynamic mechanical properties of the polymers, which are key to the processibility and applications. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation was conducted into the areas of crystallization kinetics, crystallinity, dynamic mechanical, and linear and non-linear shear rheological properties of two industrial-grade LDPEs to build a cohesive insight into the influence of morphology on these material properties. We further analyzed the steady-state and transient shear viscosity data obtained from the two LDPEs in comparison with constitutive model predictions using the hierarchical multi-mode molecular stress function (HMMSF) and found excellent agreement within experimental accuracy between predictions by the HMMSF model and shear stress as well as normal stress data of the LDPEs investigated. Abstract

Glaucomatous optic nerve damage caused by pathological intraocular pressure elevation is irreversible, and its course is often difficult to control. This group of eye diseases is closely related to biomechanics, and the correlation between glaucoma pathogenesis and mechanical stimulation has been studied in recent decades. The nonselective cation channel Piezo1, the most important known mechanical stress sensor, is a transmembrane protein widely expressed in various cell types. Piezo1 has been detected throughout the eye, and the close relationship between Piezo1 and glaucoma is being confirmed. Pathological changes in glaucoma occur in both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, and it is of great interest for researchers to determine whether Piezo1 plays a role in these changes and how it functions. The elucidation of the mechanisms of Piezo1 action in nonocular tissues and the reported roles of similar mechanically activated ion channels in glaucoma will provide an appropriate basis for further investigation. From a new perspective, this review provides a detailed description of the current progress in elucidating the role of Piezo1 in glaucoma, including relevant questions and assumptions, the remaining challenging research directions and mechanism-related therapeutic potential.
