106. Miniaturized Vertical‐Cavity Surface‐Emitting Laser Array with a Novel Electrode Design for High‐Speed, Low‐Noise, and High‐Brightness Performance

Abstract

Herein, it is shown how the novel layout and arrangement of electrodes of a vertical‐cavity surface‐emitting laser (VCSEL) array can simultaneously improve its high‐speed data transmission performance and the brightness of the output beam. In contrast to the layout of the traditional VCSEL array with its isolated mesas and a single electrode to electrical parallel arrangement of all active elements, the new inverse design can effectively reduce the pitch size between neighboring light emission apertures thereby allowing significant downscaling of the whole active area of the array and high brightness output. Moreover, there are two separate electrodes in demonstrated compact 7 × 7 VCSEL array, one for pure dc current injection and the other for large ac signal modulation. Compared with the single electrode reference device, the demonstrated array shows heavier dampening of the electrical–optical (E–O) frequency response, a wider maximum 3‐dB E–O bandwidth (17 vs 13 GHz), and a Gaussian‐like optical far‐field pattern with a higher brightness output (65.95 vs 40.8 kW cm−2 sr−1), under the same high output power (≈145 mW). The advantages of this novel VCSEL array lead to a much better quality of 32 Gbps eye‐opening with a higher brightness output.

119. Diabetes Mellitus and Gynecological and Inflammation Disorders Increased the Risk of Pregnancy Loss in a Population Study.

Abstract

(1) Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces oxidative stress and inflammation with negative effect on pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether DM increases the risk of pregnancy loss and to identify other potential risk factors; (2) Methods: We identified female patients diagnosed with DM from 2000–2015 in the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9 CM) code 250. The event was pregnancy loss, defined as ICD-9 CM codes 630–639, which was tracked until 31 December 2015. The control group included 4-fold more non-DM female patients who were matched for age and disease severity. Multivariate Cox regression was employed to determine the risk factors associated with pregnancy loss; (3) Results: The hazard ratio (HR) for the risk of pregnancy loss due to DM was 1.407 (95% confidence interval: 1.099–1.801, p = 0.007), and the risk factors for older age, gynecological disorders and inflammation disorders were included. (4) Conclusions: The study concluded that women with DM have a greater risk of experiencing pregnancy loss. Healthcare providers should proactively manage and educate diabetic patients to reduce their risk of pregnancy loss. Understanding other probable risk factors can help in developing targeted interventions and support systems for women to improve pregnancy outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Horses gallop, birds fly, architects draw. Learning design through drawing has been, and continues to be, the most fundamental method of studying architecture. With drawing literacy in decline since the late 1990s, both supporters and skeptics have declared the “Death of Drawing”, pitting digital against hand drawing. Given this situation, what are the functions of architectural drawing today, particularly those that can enable learning? This article discusses a pedagogical method that aims to cultivate a student’s desire and competency to collaborate through an inclusive drawing process. This approach draws inspiration from a long history of precedents, from handscroll paintings of the Qing-dynasty to Modern experiments of “exquisite corpse,” the drawing game of “Dot-the-Dot” by the Texas Rangers, and the contemporary drawing practices of David Gersten, Carol Arches, and Momoyo Kaijima.

Abstract

TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) has been implicated in frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin-positive inclusions (FTLD-TDP) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) is involved in DNA repair and neuroprotection in numerous neurodegenerative diseases. However, the pathological mechanisms of FTLD-TDP underlying TDP-43 proteinopathies are unclear, and the role of HDAC1 is also poorly understood. Here, we found that aberrant cell cycle activity and DNA damage are important pathogenic factors in FTLD-TDP transgenic (Tg) mice, and we further identified these pathological features in the frontal cortices of patients with FTLD-TDP. TDP-43 proteinopathies contributed to pathogenesis by inducing cytosolic mislocalization of HDAC1 and reducing its activity. Pharmacological recovery of HDAC1 activity in FTLD-TDP Tg mice ameliorated their cognitive and motor impairments, normalized their aberrant cell cycle activity, and attenuated their DNA damage and neuronal loss. Thus, HDAC1 deregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of TDP-43 proteinopathies, and HDAC1 is a potential target for therapeutic interventions in FTLD-TDP.
