Abstract

Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting λ rays, allowing to discern between 22O ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of Iπ = 1/2+ was deduced for the 23O ground state. Abstract

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. The interesting case of 23O will be directly address. The interpretation of our experimental results in the framework of a simple theoretical model will favours a spin and parity assignment of 1/2+ for the 23O ground state in agreement with shell model predictions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of (p,pn), (p,pα) and (p,p 6He) reactions with relativistic 6He and 8He beams impinging on a hydrogen target. Information on the structure of extremely neutron-rich nuclei was obtained by using the unique characteristic of quasi-free scattering processes and inverse kinematics. For the first time, momentum distributions of complex clusters inside 6He and 8He were measured. Spectroscopic factors for valence neutrons, α- and 6He clusters were deduced from the experimental data. They demonstrate that the filling of the p½ shell is the essential feature of the 8He structure. It is shown that the 8He cluster structure can be considered as a 6He core plus two valence neutrons. Abstract

The unbound hydrogen isotopes 4,5H have been studied in the one-proton knockout channel of 6He (240 MeV/u) impinging on a carbon target. The triton fragments originating from this channel were detected in coincidence with neutrons. Relative energy spectra as well as energy and angular correlations have been studied for the t+n and t+n+n systems. The analysis of the energy and angular correlations by the method of hyperspherical harmonic expansion allows to determine the relative weights of the most relevant partial waves in the three-body t+n+n final state. It is shown that the neutrons to a large extent occupy the p-shell and that the Iπ=1/2+ state is strongly populated as expected for the 5H ground state. No evidence for a narrow resonance in the t+n+n system is obtained, instead a broad structure peaked at 3 MeV above the threshold with about 6 MeV as a full width at half maximum is observed. The two-body t+n system reveals a resonance compatible with earlier results for 4H. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Low-lying resonance state in 7He(6He + n) which was formed after fragmentation reactions of a 227 MeV/nucleon 8He beam on a carbon target was investigated. The produced nuclei was separated using the fragment separator (FRS) before interacting with a 1.3 g/cm2 carbon target. The result shows that the relative energy spectrum in the 6He + n system shows a structure as the 7He ground state unbounded with 0.43(2) MeV with respect to the 6He + n system and having a width of γ = 0.15(8) MeV overlapping with an excited state observed at 1.0(1) MeV with a width of γ = 0.75(8) MeV.

Abstract

Absolute differential cross-sections for elastic p6He and p8He scattering were measured in inverse kinematics with secondary beams. In order to supplement data taken for small-angle scattering, differential cross-sections for higher momentum transfer were measured using liquid hydrogen target. Both data sets were analyzed together. They have permitted to deduce the radial shape of the nuclear matter distributions and the root-mean-square radii with the help of Glauber theory. In addition to a phenomenological analysis, used already in the previous work, a model-independent analysis with a help of a Sum-Of-Gaussians (SOG) method has been performed. The experimental p6;8He elastic scattering cross-sections have also been compared with the predictions from various theoretical nuclear models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
