Conventional thermosetting composites exhibit advantageous mechanical properties owing to the use of an autoclave; however, their wide usage is limited by high production costs and long molding times. In contrast, the fabrication of thermoplastic composites involves out-of-autoclave processes that use press equipment. In particular, induction-heating molding facilitates a quicker thermal cycle, reduced processing time, and improved durability of the thermoplastic polymers; thus, the process cost and production time can be reduced. In this study, carbon fiber/polyphenylene sulfide thermoplastic composites were manufactured using induction-heating molding, and the relationships among the process, structure, and mechanical properties were investigated. The composites were characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy, an ultrasonic C-scan, and X-ray computed tomography. In addition, the composites were subjected to flammability tests. Ammonia combustion is a promising energy source as a carbon free fuel without greenhouse gas emissions. However, since the auto-ignition temperature is 651 degrees Celsius and the range of flammability limit is not wide compared to other fuels, fundamental studies on ammonia fires have rarely been conducted so far. Therefore, this study aims to numerically estimate fire spread characteristics when ammonia fuel in a high-pressure state leaks to the outside, especially focusing on the flammability limit according to oxygen concentration. Three kinds of reaction mechanism for numerical analysis were adopted to compare the flame structure, flammability limit, and combustion characteristics. Plank-mean absorption coefficients of nitrogen species were taken for the radiation model, in addition to the optically thin model. The effect of radiation heat loss could be identified from the maximum flame temperature trend at a low strain rate. It was confirmed that the pyrolysis of ammonia in the preheated zone results in hydrogen production, and the generated hydrogen contributes to heat release rate in the flame zone. It is found that the contribution of hydrogen would be an important role in the flammability limit of ammonia combustion. Finally, Karlovitz and Peclet numbers showed well the extinction behaviors of ammonia combustion as a result of LOC (Limit Oxygen Concentration) analysis as a function of global strain rate. Background and Purpose: Despite accumulating evidence for the clinical efficacy and neuroprotective properties of rasagiline in Parkinson's disease (PD), effects of rasagiline on brain perfusion in PD patients have not been elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of rasagiline on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with PD using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).Methods: A total of 44 PD patients were recruited and treated with dopamine agonist, either alone or in combination with levodopa. Twenty-two of these patients (referred to as the rasagiline group) additionally received rasagiline (1 mg/day). All patients underwent brain SPECT scans and clinical assessments at baseline and follow-up visits. The mean follow-up period was 2.2 years. Changes in rCBF were compared between the rasagiline group and the comparison group in a voxel-wise manner.Results: Annual change in Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor score was lower in the rasagiline group compared to the comparison group (P = .01). A significant group-by-time interaction effect on rCBF was found in the right precuneus (P = .001), where rCBF was decreased in the comparison group and remained stable in the rasagiline group.Conclusions: Our results show that adjunctive rasagiline treatment had beneficial effects on perfusion in the precuneus of PD patients, suggesting potential neuroprotective effects. As a result of recent developments in imaging modalities and wide spread routine medical checkups and screening, more incidental liver lesions are found frequently on US these days. When incidental liver lesions are found on US, physicians have to make a decision whether to just follow up or to undergo additional imaging studies for lesion characterization. In order to choose the next appropriate imaging modality, the diagnostic accuracy of each imaging study needs to be considered. Therefore, we tried to compare the accuracy of contrast-enhanced multidetector CT (MDCT) and Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI for characterization of incidental liver masses. We included 127 incidentally found focal liver lesions (94 benign and 33 malignant) from 80 patients (M∶F = 45∶35) without primary extrahepatic malignancy or chronic liver disease. Two radiologists independently reviewed Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and MDCT. The proportion of confident interpretations for differentiation of benign and malignant lesions and for the specific diagnosis of diseases were compared. The proportion of confident interpretations for the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions was significantly higher with EOB-MRI(94.5%–97.6%) than with MDCT (74.0%–92.9%). In terms of specific diagnosis, sensitivity and accuracy were significantly higher with EOB-MRI than with MDCT for the diagnosis of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and focal eosinophilic infiltration. The diagnoses of the remaining diseases were comparable between EOB-MRI and MDCT. Hence, our results suggested that Gd-EOB-MRI may provide a higher proportion of confident interpretations than MDCT, especially for the diagnosis of incidentally found FNH and focal eosinophilic infiltration. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of controlled passive stretching and active movement training using a portable rehabilitation robot on stroke survivors with ankle and mobility impairment. METHODS: Twenty-four patients at least 3 months post stroke were assigned to receive 6 week training using the portable robot in a research laboratory (robot group) or an instructed exercise program at home (control group). All patients underwent clinical and biomechanical evaluations in the laboratory at pre-evaluation, post-evaluation, and 6-week follow-up. RESULTS: Subjects in the robot group improved significantly more than that in the control group in reduction in spasticity measured by modified Ashworth scale, mobility by Stroke Rehabilitation Assessment of Movement (STREAM), the balance by Berg balance score, dorsiflexion passive range of motion, dorsiflexion strength, and load bearing on the affected limb during gait after 6-week training. Both groups improved in the STREAM, dorsiflexion active range of motion and dorsiflexor strength after the training, which were retained in the follow-up evaluation. Abstract: This study of nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames with finite burner diameters investigates the important role of the outer-edge flame on flame extinction through experimental and numerical analyses. It explores flame stability diagrams mapping the flame extinction response of nitrogen-diluted non-premixed counterflow flames to varying global strain rates in terms of burner diameter, burner gap, and velocity ratio. A critical nitrogen mole fraction exists beyond which the flame cannot be sustained; the critical nitrogen mole fraction versus global strain rate curves have C-shapes for various burner diameters, burner gaps, and velocity ratios. At sufficiently high strain-rate flames, these curves collapse into one curve; therefore, the flames follow the one-dimensional flame response of a typical diffusion flame. Low strain-rate flames are significantly affected by radial conductive heat loss, and therefore flame length. Three flame extinction modes are identified: flame extinction through shrinkage of the outer-edge flame with or without oscillations at the outer-edge flame prior to the extinction, and flame extinction through a flame hole at the flame center. The extinction modes are significantly affected by the behavior of the outer-edge flame. Detailed explanations are provided based on the measured flame-surface temperature and numerical evaluation of the fractional contribution of each term in the energy equation. Radial conductive heat loss at the flame edge to ambience is the main mechanism of extinction through shrinkage of the outer-edge flame in low strain-rate flames. We assessed the role of F-18 FDG PET/CT in evaluating isolated extra-axillary lymph node recurrences in postoperative breast cancer patients and its prognostic value on clinical outcome. We reviewed PET/CT scans of postoperative breast cancer patients performed at our institution between July 2003 and February 2012. We recorded PET/CT findings, clinicopathologic variables and treatment modalities. We analyzed metabolic parameters from PET/CT and clinicopathologic variables with respect to progression free survival (PFS). A total of 3561 PET/CT scans were performed in 1906 postoperative breast cancer patients with a median interval of 43 month from curative surgery. Fifty seven patients (2.99%) demonstrated isolated extra-axillary nodal recurrences (n=85) on PET/CT (internal mammary node recurrences in 28, supraclavicular 24, infraclavicular 4, interpectoral 8, cervical 12, and mediastinal 9).The median SUVmax was 7.8 (range, 1.8~19.0), and the median node size was 15 mm (range, 6~38 mm). All recurrences were nonpalpable. Based on PET/CT findings, 53 out of 57 patients with extra-axillary node recurrences underwent subsequent chemotherapy/radiation therapy. The estimated 3-year PFS rate was 48.6%. Cutoff points of SUVmax 2.7 and size 14 mm were the best discriminative values for predicting clinical outcome. Soybean is a globally important crop serving as a primary source of vegetable protein for millions of individuals. The roots of these plants harbour essential nitrogen fixing structures called nodules. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of silicon (Si) application on soybean, with a focus on root development, and nodulation employing comprehensive transcriptomic analyses and gene regulatory network. RNA sequence analysis was utilised to examine the change in gene expression and identify the noteworthy differentially expressed genes (DEGs) linked to the enhancement of soybean root nodulation and root development. A set of 316 genes involved in diverse biological and molecular pathways are identified, with emphasis on transcription factors (TFs) and transcriptional regulators (TRs). The study uncovers TF and TR genes, categorized into 68 distinct families, highlighting the intricate regulatory landscape influenced by Si in soybeans. Upregulated most important bHLH subfamily and the involvement of the auxin transporter pathway underscore the molecular mechanisms contributing to enhanced root development and nodulation. The study bridges insights from other research, reinforcing Si’s impact on stress-response pathways and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis crucial for nodulation. Stomata are specialized pores that play a vital role in gas exchange and photosynthesis. Microscopic images are often used to assess stomatal characteristics in plants; however, this can be a challenging task. By utilizing Matterport's Mask R-CNN implementation as the foundational model, fine-tuning was conducted on a dataset of 810 microscopic images of Hedyotis corymbosa leaves' surfaces for automated stomatal pores detection. The outcomes were promising, with the model achieving a convergence of 98% mean average precision (mAP) for both detection and segmentation. The training loss and validation loss values converged around 0.18 and 0.37, respectively. Regression analyses demonstrated the statistical significance (p values ≤ 0.05) of predictor parameters. Notably, the tightest cluster of data points was observed in stomata pore area measurements, followed by width and length. This highlights the precision of the stomatal pore area in characterizing stomatal traits. Despite challenges posed by the original dataset's low-resolution images and artifacts like dust, bubbles, and blurriness, our innovative utilization of the Mask R-CNN algorithm yielded commendable outcomes. Effective identification and usage of genetic variation are prerequisites for developing nutrientefficient cultivars. A collection of 94 safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) genotypes (G) was investigated for important morphological and photosynthetic traits at four nitrogen (N) treatments. We found significant variation for all the studied traits except chlorophyll b (chl b) among safflower genotypes, nitrogen treatments and G × N interaction. The examined traits showed a 2.82-50.00% increase in response to N application. Biological yield (BY) reflected a significantly positive correlation with fresh shoot weight (FSW), root length (RL), fresh root weight (FRW) and number of leaves (NOL), while a significantly positive correlation was also observed among carotenoids (C), chlorophyll a (chl a), chl b and total chlorophyll content (CT) under all treatments. Superior genotypes with respect to plant height (PH), FSW, NOL, RL, FRW and BY were clustered into Group 3, while genotypes with better mean performance regarding chl a, chl b C and CT were clustered into Group 2 as observed in principal component analysis. The identified eight best-performing genotypes could be useful to develop improved nitrogen efficient cultivars. Genome-wide association analysis resulted in 32 marker-trait associations (MTAs) under four treatments. Markers namely DArT-45481731, DArT-17812864, DArT-15670279 and DArT-45482737 were found consistent. It is very difficult that idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with dementia (PDD) distinguish from PD patients, because PD patients may exhibit patterns of cognitive impairment. Recently, cardiac I-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy has been used as tools to distinguish PD from atypical parkinsonism. Thus, we performed this study to confirm significant clinical value of cardiac I-123 MIBG scintigraphy for differential diagnosis between PD and PDD. Cardiac I-123 MIBG scintigraphy was studied in 18 patients with PD, 18 patients with PDD, and 13 normal controls that were matched for age, disease duration, and severity of symptoms. The heart to mediastinum ratio (H/M ratio) was calculated. The mean value of H/M ratio of PDD and PD was significantly lower than normal controls. However, there were no differences between PDD and PD groups. Although cardiac I-123 MIBG scintigraphy did not distinguish PDD from PD, we wish to focus attention on sustained studies that are needed to differentiate other Lewy body disease from many dementia patients with PD features. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: The design approach presented in this paper applies Bayesian inference to the design of finite impulse response (FIR) filters with signed power-of-two (SPoT) coefficients. Given a desired frequency magnitude response specified by upper and lower bounds in decibels, Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection are adapted to produce a distribution of potential designs, all of which perform at or close to the specified standard. In the process, having incorporated prior information such as the maximum acceptable number of SPoT terms and filter length, and the practical design requirement to use the fewest bits possible, the total number of bits, filter taps and SPoT terms, and the filter length required in a design are automatically determined. The produced design candidates have design complexity appropriate to the design specifications and requirements, as designs with higher design complexity than required are rendered less probable by the embedded Ockham''s razor. This innate ability is a prominent advantage that the newly developed framework possesses over many optimization based techniques as it leads to designs that require fewer SPoT terms and filter taps. Most importantly, it avoids the intricacy, arduousness and rigorousness involved in devising an appropriate scheme for balancing design performance against design complexity. Since the pioneering works of Jakobson and Benedicks & Carleson and others, it has been known that a positive measure set of quadratic maps admit invariant probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. These measures allow one to statistically predict the asymptotic fate of Lebesgue almost every initial condition. Estimating fluctuations of empirical distributions before they settle to equilibrium requires a fairly good control over large parts of the phase space. We use the sub-exponential slow recurrence condition of Benedicks & Carleson to build induced Markov maps of arbitrarily small scale and associated towers, to which the absolutely continuous measures can be lifted. These various lifts together enable us to obtain a control of recurrence that is sufficient to establish a level 2 large deviation principle, for the absolutely continuous measures. Abstract: Fumigants, including methyl bromide and ethylene oxide, are generally used for the preservation of the Korean cultural heritage, especially paper products like letters and books. However, the use of fumigants is banned because of their harmful effects on humans and the environment. Gamma irradiation is being considered as an alternative for the sterilization of insects and fungi in organic products. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the sterilization effects of radiation and its effect on the mechanical properties of the Korean traditional paper—Hanji. Treatment doses of 9kGy and 8kGy of gamma irradiation inactivated 5 log units of Aspergillus niger and Bacillus cereus spores inoculated on Hanji, respectively. The gamma irradiations up to an absorbed dose of 50kGy resulted in no significant changes in the tensile strength, bursting strength, and appearance of Hanji. These results confirmed that radiation treatment disinfects the Korean traditional paper efficiently without changing its properties and that this treatment could be used to prevent the damage of Korean ancient archives by molds and fungi. The impact of the pendant anthryl group on the low temperature flexibility and tensile properties of a polyurethane block copolymer was investigated. The pendant anthryl group was designed to interrupt molecular interactions and to disturb the close contact between polyurethane (PU) chains through its rigid aromatic rings; thus, to improve the flexibility at extremely low temperatures, while maintaining high and reproducible tensile properties and the shape recovery at ambient temperatures. The attachment of the anthryl group was confirmed using the infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy. Increasing the anthryl content led to an unusual increase in the crosslink density due to partial crosslinking by the grafting reagent. The shape recovery and retention results were reproducible after performing repeated shape memory tests. Finally, the effect of the anthryl group on the shape recovery at −30 °C was compared with that of linear PU, and the reason for the remarkable flexibility at low temperature is discussed. A flexibly cross-linked shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) was converted to a magnetic polymer by making a composite with a ferromagnetic particle (Fe3O4). The flexibly cross-linked SMPU has already displayed excellent mechanical and shape memory properties; the design of a magnetically responsive material allowed for a unique and novel SMPU. Among the three different composite preparation methods (melt-mixing, solvent blending, and in situ reaction mixing), the melt-mixing method was the best and attained even distribution of magnetic particles and high mechanical and shape memory properties. Differential scanning calorimetric and infrared results showed that the polymer structure was not affected by melt-mixing. In tensile testing, the maximum stress of the composite reached 39 MPa, and the strain at break also increased to 2495%. Shape recovery exhibited maximums as high as 99% and displayed similar values after repetitive shape recovery test cycles. Finally, the magnetic property of SMPU was characterized by a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer and demonstrated in the magnetic attraction test. Background: Margin-negative pancreatectomy provides only chance to cure pancreatic cancer. However, borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (BRPCa) has the risk of incomplete palliative resection. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 32 patients with BRPCa who underwent a pancreatectomy following preoperative chemoradiation therapy (CCRT (+)/Px group) and compared these patients with those with resectable pancreatic cancer (RPCa) who underwent pancreatectomy without preoperative CCRT (CCRT (−)/Px group, n = 104). Results: Eighteen patients (56.2%) showed more than 50% significant pathological response to CCRT. The degree of pathological responses showed a positive relationship between final pT stage ( p = 0.075). More frequent vascular resection ( p < 0.001), transfusion ( p = 0.076), and longer operation time were observed in the CCRT(+)/Px group. However, similar R0 resection rates ( p = 0.272), lower pT stage ( p < 0.001), smaller number of metastastic lymph nodes ( p = 0.002), and lower incidence of lymph node metastasis ( p = 0.032) were noted in the CCRT(+)/Px group. The overall disease-specific survival were similar (median survival, 30.5 months (95% CI; 23.6-37.4) vs. 26.3 months (95% CI; 15.9-36.7), p = 0.709), and no statistical differences in cancer recurrence risks were noted between the two groups ( p = 0.505). Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) flexibly crosslinked by a hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) spacer at its side through allophanate bonding was tested for shape recovery at −30 °C and compared to a linear SMPU. The SMPU was composed of 4,4′-methylenebis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI), poly(tetramethyleneglycol) (PTMG), 1,4-butanediol (BD), and PDMS that was connected to SMPU chains by a second MDI. The mechanical and shape memory properties of two types of SMPU, differing in PTMG and PDMS content, were compared. In the best case, a 283% increase in maximum stress compared to the linear polymer was attained without any sacrifice of strain. Shape recovery at 45 °C increased to 91% and remained at more than 80% after four cyclic tests. Shape recovery at 0 °C could be improved by increasing PDMS content, and the critical shape recovery temperature decreased with increasing PDMS content. The PDMS-crosslinked SMPU demonstrated instant shape recovery at −30 °C in comparison with the linear SMPU that must be warmed to room temperature for complete shape recovery. The aim of the research is to find out better medicinal stuff for thyroid cancer patients who are required to have a low level iodine diet. Iodine contents in 12 kinds of oriental herbal medicinal prescriptions, which are frequently used for thyroid cancer patients, are determined using instrumental neutron activation analysis. The biological certified reference material was used for analytical quality control. The relative errors and standard deviations for the iodine analysis were less than 2.88 and 18.5%, respectively. The level of iodine contents for four medicinal samples detected was in the range of about 3-210 mg/kg, the concentrations of eight samples were estimated from the detection limit under the given analytical conditions. In addition, the informative concentrations of 17 essential elements with special functions such as Al, As, Ba, Br, Ca, Cl, Cr, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn in the samples were also determined together with their detection limits for data inter-comparison. The analysis of mineral contents in space foods is needed to obtain an information on a comprehensive elemental composition as well as the investigation on the effects of human nutrition and health based on the dietary intake of mineral elements. Recently, six items of new Korean space foods (KSFs) such as kimchi, bibimbap, bulgogi, a ramen, a mulberry beverage and a fruit punch which was developed by the KAERI, and the contents of more than 15 elements in the samples were examined by using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Five biological certified reference materials, NIST SRM were used for analytical quality control. Abstract: We have studied the influence of growth temperature (T G) in the deposition of an indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent conducting oxide layer on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin-film solar cells. The ITO films were deposited on i-ZnO/glass and i-ZnO/CdS/CIGS/Mo/glass substrates using radio-frequency magnetron sputtering at various T G up to 350°C. Both the resistivity of ITO and the interface quality of CdS/CIGS strongly depend on T G. For a T G ≤200°C, a reduction in the series resistance enhanced the solar cell performance, while the p–n interface of the device was found to become deteriorated severely at T G >200°C. Abstract: Objective: To define diagnostic criteria for differentiating malignant ampullary carcinoma from benign ampullary obstruction on MR imaging. Materials and methods: Nineteen patients with ampullary carcinoma and 22 patients with benign ampullary obstruction were enrolled. At the first session, two radiologists independently evaluated specific imaging findings, and then reached consensus decisions. At the second session, another two radiologists, who were informed about useful differentiation criteria based on the results from the first session, reviewed images and determined the causes of ampullary obstruction. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for each interpretation session, and the Cohen κ statistic was used to evaluate interobserver agreement. Results: Findings of the presence of an ampullary mass (P <0.001), papillary bulging (P <0.001), irregular (P =0.021) and asymmetric (P <0.001) common bile duct (CBD) narrowing, and proportional biliary dilatation (P <0.001) were more commonly seen in patients with an ampullary carcinoma. The sensitivity and specificity of the first session were 84.2% and 86.4% after consensus. The sensitivity increased to 100% for both the readers at the second session, while the specificity decreased to 63.6% and 59.1%, respectively. Conclusions: Identification of an ampullary mass, papillary bulging, irregular and asymmetric narrowing of the CBD, or proportional biliary dilatation may improve the diagnosis of ampullary carcinoma in patients with ampullary obstruction. Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible positron emission tomography (PET) scanners for both clinical and preclinical practice. The aim of this study was to design a novel PET detector module using a segmented block crystal readout with an array of multi-pixel photon counters (MPPCs). A 16.5×16.5×10.0mm3 LSO block was segmented into an 11×11 array, and reflective material was used to fill in the cuts to optically isolate the elements. The block was attached to a 4×4 MPPC array (Hamamatsu S11064) of 3.0×3.0mm2 detectors to give a total effective area of 144mm2. To visualize all the individual detector elements in this 11×11 detector module, the depth of the cuts was optimized by DETECT2000 simulations. The depth of the cuts determines the spread of scintillation light onto the MPPC array. The accuracy of positioning was evaluated by varying the depth of the cuts from 0.0 to 10.0mm in steps of 0.5mm. A spatial resolution of 1.5mm was achieved using the optimized partially segmented block detector. The simulation results of this study can be used effectively as a guide for parameter optimization for the development of a partially segmented block detector for high-resolution MR-compatible PET scanners. Abstract: In recent years, small-animal PET scanners with depth of interaction (DOI) capability have been developed for molecular imaging research. The aim of this study is to perform simulations to design a high performance small-animal PET, called TraPET. TraPET has an inner diameter of 76.21mm with 6 dual-layer phoswich detector modules. Each module is composed of a 5.0-mm-thick trapezoidal-monolithic-LSO crystal with a front face (surface facing toward the inside of the scanner) of 44.0×44.0mm2 and a back face of 50.0×50.0mm2 and a 25×25 array of LuYAP crystals with a 2.0×2.0mm2 sensitive area with a 15.0mm thickness. DOI information is extracted by a pulse shape discrimination method. The ability of event positioning in the trapezoidal-monolithic-LSO was evaluated by modeling the light distribution in the crystal using DETECT2000 and a 16×16 array of silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), with a 3.0mm pixel size, selected as the photo-sensor. Also, the sensitivity and gap filling effect between modules were simulated using the Monte Carlo code, GATE. The new detector showed higher and more uniform sensitivity, as compared to scanners with rectangular-shaped detectors, because the trapezoidal-monolithic-LSO minimizes the dead space within the detector ring. In conclusion, our new detector proved to be a reliable design for small-animal PET with high spatial resolution by DOI information, and high sensitivity by high filling fraction. Abstract: Myogloblin, a well-known metalloprotein, was immobilized on a gold surface using various chemical linkers to investigate the length effect of chemical linker on the electron transfer in protein layers, because chemical linkers play roles in the pathway that transfers the electron from the protein to the gold substrate and act as protein immobilization reagents. Chemical linkers with 2, 6, 11, and 16 carbons were utilized to confirm length-effects. The immobilization of protein and chemical linker was validated with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrochemical property was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronocoulometry (CC). In those results, redox peaks of immobilized protein were controlled via the length of chemical linkers, and it could be directly applied to the realization of bioelectronic device. Based on the observation that design and inference are both generalized inverse problems, we devise a new approach that uses the Bayesian inference framework for the automated design of linear antenna arrays. Compared to the optimization-based techniques that are widely used for automated antenna design, this newly-developed method has a prominent advantage, which is the capability to determine automatically the number of antenna elements required to satisfy design requirements and specifications. Three broadside array design problems, which include the null-controlled pattern, the sector beam pattern, and the Chebyshev pattern, along with an end-fire array design problem, are presented as examples. Abstract: Background: A fixed-dose combination tablet of tramadol/acetaminophen exhibits both rapid and sustained analgesic effects due to different pharmacologic activities. To prolong analgesia and improve patient convenience, an extended-release (ER) tablet of this agent has been developed. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the pharmacokinetic profiles of the new ER tramadol/acetaminophen fixed-dose combination and compare them with those of a conventional immediate-release (IR) formulation after multiple dosing as a Phase I clinical exploratory trial. Methods: An open-label, randomized, 2-sequence crossover study was conducted in healthy volunteers. All subjects received both formulations for 4 days: either 1 IR tablet (tramadol 37.5 mg/acetaminophen 325 mg) q6h followed by 1 ER tablet (tramadol 75 mg/acetaminophen 650 mg) q12h, or vice versa. A 5-day washout period separated the 2 treatments. Tramadol and acetaminophen concentrations in plasma were determined simultaneously using LC-MS/MS, and the pharmacokinetic properties were analyzed by noncompartmental method. To compare the systemic exposure of the 2 formulations, the geometric mean ratios (GMRs) for AUC0–12,ss and the 90% CIs were calculated. Adverse events (AEs) were identified through subject interviews, recording of vital signs, physical examinations, 12-lead electrocardiography, and clinical laboratory assessments. Results: Twelve healthy, nonsmoking, Korean male subjects completed the study. The mean (SD) age was 24.4 (5.2) years and the mean body weight was 65.1 (6.0) kg. The Tmax,ss for tramadol was delayed until 3 hours after the ER treatment, compared with 1 hour after the IR treatment, whereas the Tmax,ss of acetaminophen was 30 minutes after each treatment. The mean (SD) of AUC0–12,ss in the IR and ER formulations was 2789.0 (507.7) and 2638.7 (469.1) µg/h/L for tramadol and 42,635.0 (8711.2) and 40,394.3 (10,127.7) µg/h/L for acetaminophen, respectively. The GMR of ER to IR for AUC0–12,ss was 0.95 (90% CI, 0.91–0.99) for tramadol and 0.94 (90% CI, 0.89–0.99) for acetaminophen. A total of 17 AEs occurred in 9 subjects; all AEs were considered mild or moderate and resolved without medical intervention. The most frequent AEs were headache and dizziness (3 cases each). Abstract: We have built a four-layer detector to obtain depth of interaction (DOI) information in which all four layers have a relative offset of half a crystal pitch with each other. The main characteristics of the detector, especially the energy and spatial resolutions, strongly depend on the crystal surface treatments. As a part of the development of an animal PET, we have investigated the effect of crystal surface treatment on detector performances using Monte Carlo simulations in order to optimize the surface conditions of crystals composing a four-layer detector. The proposed detector consists of four LYSO layers with crystal dimensions of 1.5×1.5×7.0 and 1.5×1.5×5.0mm3. A simulation tool (DETECT2000) was used and validated against the experimental results; flood images were acquired by a prototype module. Flood images were simulated by varying the surface treatment of the crystals. The optimal surface conditions of the four-layer crystals were derived for a small animal PET with a view towards achieving high sensitivity, as well as high and uniform radial resolution. Biopesticides can be effective in controlling their target pest. However, research regarding allergenicity and asthma development is limited. We compared the ability of fungal biopesticide Metarhizium anisopliae (MACA) and house dust mite (HDM) extracts to induce allergic responses in BALB/c mice. The extracts were administered by intratracheal aspiration at doubling doses (2.5- 80 μg protein) 4X over a four-week period. Three days after the last exposure, serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were collected. The extracts' relative allergenicity was evaluated based on response robustness (lowest significant dose response compared to control (0 μg)). MACA induced a more robust serum total IgE response than HDM. However, in the antigen-specific IgE assay, a similar dose of both MACA and HDM was required to achieve the same response level. Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to examine disturbances in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) associated with methamphetamine abuse. Methods: Using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), rCBF was measured in 20 men who had previously injected methamphetamine intravenously for over 30 months and who were now abstinent for a minimum of 9 months and for an average of 2 years. Values were compared with those in 12 healthy men who had never injected methamphetamine. Results: While rCBF was significantly and disproportionately reduced in subcortical and dorsal cortical brain regions, including the striatum, thalamus, cingulum, mesiodorsal prefrontal cortex, and pons (all t''s>8.3 after global normalization, corrected p''s<0.001), whole brain CBF was also significantly reduced in the former methamphetamine users. Binge use of methamphetamine is associated with long-term changes in both global and regional blood flows, likely representing severe and enduring neural toxicity of monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems in the brain, producing a pattern of hypoperfusion that resembles patterns reported previously for persons with atypical Parkinson''s disease. Abstract: In our previous work, the new detector module with depth of interaction (DOI) based on a quasi-monolithic crystal array and maximum-likelihood position-estimation (MLPE) algorithm was designed and the methodology for 3D event positioning in the detector was established by using Monte Carlo simulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of our detector module experimentally. The detector module consisted of a 1D array of eight LYSO crystals of 20.0(X)×2.0(Y)×10.0(Z)mm3, optically coupled to a Hamamatsu H7546B position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT). The PSPMT was read out using a resistive charge divider, which multiplexes 64 anodes into 8(X)+8(Y) channels. Gaussian-based MLPE methods have been implemented using experimentally measured detector response functions (DRFs). The results demonstrated that the detector module could identify the position of the gamma ray interaction inside the crystal in all three directions. Abstract: The poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)-based nanoparticles, coated by the heparin- or chitosan-Pluronic conjugate, were used to improve a relatively low tumor-targeting efficiency of the bare PLGA nanoparticles. The prepared nanoparticles were in the size range of 100–150nm, and the surface exposure of the functional moiety (heparin or chitosan) was confirmed by negatively or positively increased zeta potential values, respectively. The viability tests for both normal and tumor cells displayed minimal cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles. The stable surface coating, which was evident from no change in the size distribution profiles in spite of the surface charge changes in serum environment, effectively provided the desired functionalized surface that clearly enhanced the in vitro cellular uptake of the nanoparticles for both heparin and chitosan functionalization. The in vivo tumor model study, which was carried out in SCC7 tumor-bearing athymic mice, demonstrated that there was a limited, but positive effect of surface functionalization, more effective for chitosan functionalization. The accumulation of chitosan-functionalized PLGA nanoparticles in tumor was 2.4 folds higher than that of the control, PLGA nanoparticles coated with bare Pluronic, and the accumulation in liver was lower than the control. In the case of heparin functionalization, the mean value was 2.2 folds higher than that of the control, but the accumulation in liver was similar to that of the control. Therefore, the surface-functionalization by the chitosan- or heparin-conjugated Pluronic may be an effective approach for the hydrophobic nanoparticle systems aiming for the enhanced tumor imaging and therapy. Abstract: We investigated the angiogenic bioactivity and therapeutic angiogenic effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) administration by the heparin-functionalized nanoparticle–fibrin gel complex. The markedly increased bioactivity was observed by the VEGF-loaded nanoparticle–fibrin gel complex, compared to the VEGF-loaded fibrin gel, the nanoparticle–fibrin gel complex without VEGF, or fibrin gel (control) in terms of the capillary density in a mouse subcutaneous implantation model. Furthermore, the VEGF-loaded nanoparticle–fibrin gel complex significantly enhanced the therapeutic angiogenic effect in a rabbit ischemic hind limb model: the noticeable increase in the recovered calf blood pressure, the angiographic score, and the density of collaterals, as well as the stable maintenance of the organized collaterals, compared to the VEGF-loaded fibrin gel. A report by the Institute of Medicine suggested that more research is needed to better understand mold effects on allergic disease, particularly asthma development. The authors compared the ability of the fungus Stachybotrys chartarum (SCE) and house dust mite (HDM) extracts to induce allergic responses in BALB/c mice. The extracts were administered by intratracheal aspiration (IA) at several doses (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 µg) 4 times over a 4-week period. Three days after the last IA exposure, serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were collected. The relative allergenicity of the extracts was evaluated based on the lowest dose that induced a significant response compared to control (0 μg) and the linear regression slope analysis across the dose range. SCE induced a more robust response than HDM for BALF some inflammatory cells (macrophage and neutrophils), whereas HDM induced more robust BALF lymphocyte and eosinophil responses. Although SCE induced a more robust serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) response than did HDM, the induction of a similar response in a functional, antigen-specific IgE assay required approximately twice as much SCE as HDM. Even though SCE demonstrates the ability to induce allergic responses in the mouse model, considering the importance and relevance of eosinophil, lymphocyte, and antigen-specific IgE in allergic airway disease, it is concluded that HDM is more potent than SCE in the induction of allergic responses. These data suggest a threshold dose for SCE allergy induction. Abstract: Silk nanoparticles were prepared from silk fibroin solutions of domesticated Bombyx mori and tropical tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta and investigated in respect to its particle size, surface charge, stability and morphology along with its cellular uptake and release of growth factors. The nanoparticles were stable, spherical, negatively charged, 150–170nm in average diameter and exhibited mostly Silk II (β-sheet) structure and did not impose any overt toxicity. Cellular uptake studies showed the accumulation of fluorescence isothiocyanate conjugated silk nanoparticles in the cytosol of murine squamous cell carcinoma cells. In vitro VEGF release from the nanoparticles showed a significantly sustained release over 3 weeks, signifying the potential application as a growth factor delivery system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The magnetic field has been regarded as both harmful and beneficial for its applications on human brains including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), but its effects still remain in question. Here, we determined using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) if 0.3-T static magnetic field could alter regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in target and other brain regions in healthy subjects. The permanent static magnet (0.3 T, unipolar, disk shaped, 4 cm diameter and 1 cm thick) was placed on the right frontotemporal region of the brain for each of 14 healthy subjects. Tc-99m ECD perfusion SPECT was taken to compare the CBF patterns in the subjects exposed to the static magnet field with those of the resting and sham conditions. We found that the rCBF was significantly increased in the right frontal and parietal regions and the right insula. On the other hand, rCBF was rather decreased in the left frontal and left parietal regions (P<0.05). These results of this basic study suggest that 0.3-T static magnetic field induces an increase in rCBF in the targeted brain areas non-invasively, which may result from a decrease in rCBF in contralateral regions. We study the multifractal analysis for smooth dynamical systems in dimension one. It is given a characterization of the Hausdorff dimension of the level set obtained from the Birkhoff averages of a continuous function by the local dimensions of hyperbolic measures for a topologically mixing C2 map modeled by an abstract dynamical system. A characterization which corresponds to above is also given for the ergodic basins of invariant probability measures. The new antivirals clevudine, telbivudine and emtricitabine may be potent agents for the treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, there have been no reports on serious adverse events associated with the use of clevudine. A son and his mother both had HBV infection (ages: 27 and 47 years, respectively), and they had received antivirus treatment with clevudine (30 mg daily). They developed progressive weakness of the lower extremities and difficulty arising from the ground. Both the patients had symptoms for the previous 3 ∼4 months in process of 14∼17 months of clevudine therapy. The physical examinations showed positive Gower's sign, a decreased gait velocity and symmetrical proximal weakness (MRC grade 4/5). Their blood tests at admission revealed elevated or positive HBs Ag, HBV DNA, AST, ALT, creatine kinase, LDH, myoglobin and CK-MB. For both patients, the electrodiagnostic studies indicated myopathy and the pathologic findings of biopsied muscles revealed myositis. Drug-induced polymyositis was suspected and the clevudine was finally withdrawn. The muscle weakness and laboratory findings were improved for both patients after conservative care. We report here on the first cases of polymyositis that may have been caused by administering the new nucleoside analog clevudine for treating HBV infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome is a rare condition that causes a variety of clinical symptoms due to autoimmune processes involving multiple endocrine organs. Its vague presentation can cause missed or delayed treatment for adrenal insufficiency, resulting in a life-threatening adrenal crisis. Case Report: A 21-yr-old man presented with lethargy, hypotension, hyponatremia, hypoglycemia, and an elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone level. He was binge drinking the day before presentation. No significant response to initial treatment with levothyroxine and dextrose occurred. Diagnostic workup later revealed primary adrenal insufficiency. All initial symptoms completely resolved following treatment with hydrocortisone, fludrocortisone, and levothyroxine. Conclusion: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome causes dysfunction of multiple endocrine organs such as the thyroid gland, adrenal gland, and pancreas. Initial diagnosis of APS is crucial and difficult because of its vague, acute presentation, which often involves hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. Delayed treatment of adrenal insufficiency can result in a life-threatening adrenal crisis. Background: Bicalutamide is an oral nonsteroidal antiandrogen drug used during hormone ablation therapy for prostate cancer. A new generic formulation of bicalutamide has been developed. Objectives: This study was conducted to meet Korean and US regulatory requirements for the marketing of the generic 50-mg tablet formulation of bicalutamide. To this end, the pharmacokinetic properties of the new (test) formulation were compared with those of the currently marketed (reference) formulation. Tolerability was also evaluated. Methods: An open-label, randomized-sequence, single-dose, 2-period crossover study was conducted in healthy Korean male volunteers. Subjects received either the test or reference formulation of bicalutamide 50-mg tablets in the first period and crossed over to the alternative formulation in the second period. Serial blood samples for pharmacokinetic analysis were taken over 672 hours after dosing. Plasma concentrations of bicalutamide were measured by HPLC-MS/MS. Pharmacokinetic parameters, including AUC0–672h, were determined by noncompartmental analysis. Log-transformed Cmax and AUC0–672h for the 2 formulations were compared. Tolerability was monitored based on laboratory tests, ECGs, vital signs, and physical examinations. Results: Of the 34 subjects initially enrolled, 33 completed the study. The mean (SD) age, height, and weight of participants were 25.8 (4.1) years, 173.6 (5.7) cm, and 68.9 (7.8) kg, respectively. The median Tmax was 36.0 hours for both formulations. The mean (SD) t½, Cmax, and AUC0–672h for the reference formulation were 135.4 (28.6) hours, 933.2 (169.2) μg/L, and 215,680.1 (48,753.4) μg · h/L, respectively. Corresponding values for the test formulation were 134.3 (30.7) hours, 946.7 (179.9) μg/L, and 221,708.8 (54,935.1) μg · h/L. The 90% CIs for the mean ratios (test/reference) of log-transformed Cmax and AUC0–672h were 0.97 to 1.06 and 0.98 to 1.07, respectively. Twelve adverse events were reported for each formulation, none of which were considered drug related in the test-formulation group and 4 of which were considered drug related in the reference-formulation group (3 cases of headache, 1 case of erythematous rash). Conclusions: In this single-dose study in healthy Korean male subjects, the new formulation of bicalutamide 50-mg tablets met Korean and US regulatory criteria for assumption of bioequivalence with the currently marketed formulation. The purpose of this study was to investigate regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes using 1110 MBq of Tc-99m ECD SPECT in alcohol-related dementia (ARD) patients. Twenty-five patients with ARD and 22 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Mini-Mental Status Examination was applied to the patients and controls. The ARD patients showed drastically reduced rCBF in the frontal cortices, basal ganglia, and thalami. The results indicate that ARD is associated with hypoperfusion in both cortical and subcortical regions. Abstract: When conducting cartilage tissue engineering with stem cells, it is well known that chemical and physical stimulations are very important for the induction and maintenance of chondrogenesis. In this study, we induced chondrogenic differentiation of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hASCs) in situ by effective stimulation via the continuous controlled release of TGF-β1 from a heparin-functionalized nanoparticle–fibrin–poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) complex. PLCL scaffolds were fabricated with 85% porosity and 300–500μm pore size by a gel-pressing method. Heparin-functionalized nanoparticles were prepared by a solvent-diffusion method, composed of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), Pluronic F-127, and heparin, and then TGF-β1 was loaded to the nanoparticles. A mixture of hASCs, fibrin gels and TGF-β1 loaded nanoparticles was then seeded onto PLCL scaffolds and cultured in vitro, after which they were subcutaneously implanted into nude mice for up to five weeks. The results of in vitro and in vivo studies revealed that chondrogenic differentiation of the hASCs on the complex was induced and sustained by continuous stimulation by TGF-β1 from the heparin-functionalized nanoparticles. In addition, there was no significant difference between the predifferentiation condition prior to incubation in chondrogenic medium and the proliferation condition, which suggests that in situ chondrogenic differentiation of hASCs was induced by the TGF-β1 loaded nanoparticles. Consequently, the hybridization of fibrin and PLCL scaffolds for three-dimensional spatial organization of cells and the effective delivery of TGF-β1 using heparin-functionalized nanoparticles can induce hASCs to differentiate to a chondrogenic lineage and maintain their phenotypes. Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is abnormal in patients who have Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). Methods: We obtained noninvasive rCBF measurements using Tc-99m-ethyl cysteinate diamer Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) in 7 patients diagnosed with TGA within 4 days of onset of the amnestic episode while the patients were still symptomatic and in 17 age-matched healthy control subjects. We assessed memory functioning using the Hopkins''s Verbal Learning Test (HVLT) and Statistical Parametric Mapping to compare rCBF across diagnostic groups. Results: The patients with TGA were significantly impaired in their performance on the 20-minute delayed recall of the HVLT. They also exhibited significantly decreased rCBF on their SPECT scans in the inferior and middle frontal gyrus bilaterally, with more prominent left-sided reductions in the superior temporal, precentral, and postcentral gyri, as well as increased rCBF primarily in the right hemisphere within the middle temporal, superior temporal, and inferior frontal gyri, cerebellum, and thalamus, compared with the normal control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that lateralized abnormalities in brain functioning are an important component of the pathophysiology of TGA. Lateralized abnormalities may disrupt functions that are relatively specific to the left hemisphere, including receptive language, symbolic representation, and the processing of local features in the environment, while preserving anterograde memory processes. Increased flow to the right hemisphere centered on regions that subserve the functions of expressive language and visuospatial processing, and may represent processes that compensate for flow reductions to the left hemisphere. Intratracheal aspiration (IA) exposure to Metarhizium anisopliae crude antigen (MACA), which is composed of equal protein amounts of mycelium (MYC), conidia (CON) and inducible proteases/chitinases (IND) extracts/filtrates, has resulted in responses characteristic of human allergic asthma in mice. The study objective was to evaluate the potential of each component extract to induce allergic/asthma-like responses observed in this mouse model. BALB/c mice received 4 IA exposures to MACA, CON, MYC, IND, or bovine serum albumin (BSA; negative control) or appropriate vehicle control or inflammatory control over a 4-wk period. Mice were assessed by whole-body plethysmography for immediate airway responses and airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine (Mch) challenge (PenH). Serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were collected 3 d after the final exposure. Additionally, BALF neurotrophin levels and extract protease and chitinase activity levels were evaluated. Western blot analysis showed that each component contained different IgE-reactive proteins. All fungal extract exposures resulted in elevated BALF total and differential cell counts, IgE and IgA and total serum IgE compared to HBSS and BSA controls. MYC-exposed mice had the highest responses except for neutrophil influx, which was highest in MACA and IND exposures. However, the MYC-exposed mice had significantly lower PenH values compared to other treatments. By comparison IND and MACA induced significantly higher PenH values. Additionally, IND had substantially higher protease activity levels but induced the lowest neurotrophin levels compared to the other fungal exposures. In this allergic asthma model extract chitinase activity was not associated with allergic responses. In summary, multiple exposures to any of the M. anisopliae component extracts induced allergic/asthma-like responses in BALB/c mice but the response magnitude was different for each component and each appears to contain unique IgE-reactive proteins. Abstract: Gingival fibroblast cells (rGF) from aged rats have an age-related decline in proliferative capacity compared with young rats. We investigated G1 phase cell cycle regulation and MMP-9 expression in both young and aged rGF. G1 cell cycle protein levels and activity were significantly reduced in response to interleukin-1β (IL-1β) stimulation with increasing in vitro age. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression was also decreased in aged rGF in comparison with young rGF. Mutational analysis and gel shift assays demonstrated that the lower MMP-9 expression in aged rGF is associated with lower activities of transcription factors NF-κB and AP-1. These results suggest that cell cycle dysregulation and down-regulation of MMP-9 expression in rGF may play a role in gingival remodeling during in vitro aging. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The boron-assisted catalytic graphitization of carbonaceous materials is an attractive methodology for enhancing their electrical properties by modulating the chemical structures of pristine carbons. In this study, polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers (CFs) with highly developed microstructures were prepared by boron-assisted catalytic graphitization. Hydrothermally immersed CFs in boric acid were heat-treated up to 2700 °C, and their chemical structures were traced to investigate the boron-assisted catalytic graphitization mechanism. Boron from the gasified boron-related functional groups of CFs diffused into the CFs to form boron carbide, B 4 C. The boron-substituted CFs exhibited a highly developed crystalline structure that could not be achieved by heat treatment alone, indicating that boron accelerated the graphitic carbon structure. As a result, boron-assisted catalytic graphitization at 2700 °C simultaneously enhanced the electrical and thermal conductivities of CFs, with values of 3677.8 S/cm and 365.9 W/mK, respectively, which were 2.8 and 2.4 times higher than those of heat-treated CFs at 2700 °C. In addition, CFs were used to prepare CF papers using a wet-laid process, and their heat generation and thermal management capabilities were evaluated. Reduced left-lateralized electroencephalographic (EEG) frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), a biomarker for the imbalance of interhemispheric frontal activity and motivational disturbances, represents a neuropathological attribute of negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Unidirectional high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) can increase the excitability of the cortex beneath the stimulating electrode. Yet, it is unclear if hf-tRNS can modulate electroencephalographic FAA in patients with schizophrenia. We performed a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial to contrast hf-tRNS and sham stimulation for treating negative symptoms in 35 schizophrenia patients. We used electroencephalography to investigate if 10 sessions of hf-tRNS delivered twice-a-day for five consecutive weekdays would modulate electroencephalographic FAA in schizophrenia. EEG data were collected and FAA was expressed as the differences between common-log-transformed absolute power values of frontal right and left hemisphere electrodes in the alpha frequency range (8–12.5 Hz). We found that hf-tRNS significantly increased FAA during the first session of stimulation (p = 0.009) and at the 1-week follow-up (p = 0.004) relative to sham stimulation. However, FAA failed to predict and surrogate the improvement in the severity of negative symptoms with hf-tRNS intervention. Together, our findings suggest that modulating electroencephalographic frontal alpha asymmetry by using unidirectional hf-tRNS may play a key role in reducing negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is associated with increased resting-state large-scale functional network connectivity in the gamma frequency. High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) modulates gamma-band endogenous neural oscillations in healthy individuals through the application of low-amplitude electrical noises. Yet, it is unclear if hf-tRNS can modulate gamma-band functional connectivity in patients with schizophrenia. We performed a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial to contrast hf-tRNS (N = 17) and sham stimulation (N = 18) for treating negative symptoms in 35 schizophrenia patients. Short continuous currents without neuromodulatory effects were applied in the sham group to mimic real-stimulation sensations. We used electroencephalography to investigate if a five-day, twice-daily hf-tRNS protocol modulates gamma-band (33–45 Hz) functional network connectivity in schizophrenia. Exact low resolution electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA) was used to compute intra-cortical activity from regions within the default mode network (DMN) and fronto-parietal network (FPN), and functional connectivity was computed using lagged phase synchronization. We found that hf-tRNS reduced gamma-band within-DMN and within-FPN connectivity at the end of stimulation relative to sham stimulation. A trend was obtained between the change in within-FPN functional connectivity from baseline to the end of stimulation and the improvement of negative symptoms at the one-month follow-up (r = −0.49, p = 0.055). Together, our findings suggest that hf-tRNS has potential as a network-level approach to modulate large-scale functional network connectivity pertaining to negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Introduction: Cervical dystonia is considered as a network disorder affecting various brain regions in recent days. Presumably, deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the internal segment of globus pallidus (GPi) may exert therapeutic effects for cervical dystonia through modulation of the aberrant brain networks. In the present study, we investigated postoperative regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes after GPi DBS using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to identify significant activity changes in several relevant brain areas of cervical dystonia patients. Methods: A total of 9 patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia were recruited, and SPECT scans were conducted at baseline and 3 months after the bilateral GPi DBS. Voxel-wise changes of rCBF were analyzed using Statistical Parametric Mapping. Symptom severity of dystonia was measured using Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) at the baseline, and 1 week, and 3 months after GPi DBS. Results: At the 3-month follow-up after DBS, rCBF was increased in the left pons and right postcentral gyrus and decreased in the left middle frontal gyrus, left cerebellum, right putamen and pallidum, and left thalamus (p < 0.001). Severity of cervical dystonia assessed by TWSTRS was significantly decreased at 1-week and 3-month follow-up (p = 0.004). Conclusions: Clinical improvement of cervical dystonia after GPi DBS may be accompanied by rCBF changes in several brain areas of the cortico-basal ganglia-cerebellar network which are important for sensorimotor integration. Using molecular dynamics simulation, the growth behavior of Co atoms on Cu substrates for two different crystallographic orientations, (001) and (111), was extensively investigated. The surface roughness became noticeably higher during 20-monolayer (ML) deposition of Co thin-film on the Cu(111) substrate compared to the case of the Cu(001) substrate. It was found that the high diffusivity of Co adatoms on Cu(111) enhanced the atomic lateral movement, and the deposited Co adatoms could be agglomerated easily.
