Diarrhea is a common occurence in the elderly. The causes include impactions, infections, medications and enteral nutrition, underlying conditiois such as chronic pancreatitis, GI tumors and carcinoid syndrome. Diarrhea leads to death more commonly in geriatric than younger patients. A thorough diagnostic search for etiologies should be undertaken when a diarrhea persists for more than 24 to 48 hours, and should include a stool culture and drug history for the prior 6 months before the diarrhea. Practical considerations for assessment and treatment of diarrhea and patient/family education for diarrhea are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
