101. High Energy and Narrow Linewidth N2-Filled Hollow-Core Fiber Laser at 1.4 μm

Abstract

In this work, we develop a high energy laser at 1.4 μm wavelength through the 1st order vibrational Raman Stokes generation in a nitrogen (N2) filled nodeless anti-resonant hollow core fiber (ARHCF), pumped using a custom-made 1060 nm Yb-doped narrow-linewidth fiber laser with 3.7 ns pulse duration and 98 μJ pulse energy. The maximum Raman energy of 26.5 μJ is achieved at 15 bar N2 pressure, corresponding to a quantum efficiency of 45% and peak power of 8.03 kW with 3.3 ns pulse width. This Raman laser has a narrow linewidth of 0.16 nm, and it is tunable over ∼2 nm range by thermally tuning the laser diode seed wavelength of the pump fiber laser. This work provides a promising alternative for developing high energy and narrow-linewidth lasers outside the gain spectral regions of rare earth ion doped fibers.

105. Strategies for genomic predictions of an indicine multi‐breed population using single‐step GBLUP.

Abstract

Brazilian livestock breeding programmes strive to enhance the genetics of beef cattle, with a strong emphasis on the Nellore breed, which has an extensive database and has achieved significant genetic progress in the last years. There are other indicine breeds that are economically important in Brazil; however, these breeds have more modest sets of phenotypes, pedigree and genotypes, slowing down their genetic progress as their predictions are less accurate. Combining several breeds in a multi‐breed evaluation could help enhance predictions for those breeds with less information available. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of multi‐breed, single‐step genomic best linear unbiased predictor genomic evaluations for Nellore, Brahman, Guzerat and Tabapua. Multi‐breed evaluations were contrasted to the single‐breed ones. Data were sourced from the National Association of Breeders and Researchers of Brazil and included pedigree (4,207,516), phenotypic (328,748), and genomic (63,492) information across all breeds. Phenotypes were available for adjusted weight at 210 and 450 days of age, and scrotal circumference at 365 days of age. Various scenarios were evaluated to ensure pedigree and genomic information compatibility when combining different breeds, including metafounders (MF) or building the genomic relationship matrix with breed‐specific allele frequencies. Scenarios were compared using the linear regression method for bias, dispersion and accuracy. The results showed that using multi‐breed evaluations significantly improved accuracy, especially for smaller breeds like Guzerat and Tabapua. The validation statistics indicated that the MF approach provided accurate predictions, albeit with some bias. While single‐breed evaluations tended to have lower accuracy, merging all breeds in multi‐breed evaluations increased accuracy and reduced dispersion. This study demonstrates that multi‐breed genomic evaluations are proper for indicine beef cattle breeds. The MF approach may be particularly beneficial for less‐represented breeds, addressing limitations related to small reference populations and incompatibilities between G and A22. By leveraging genomic information across breeds, breeders and producers can make more informed selection decisions, ultimately improving genetic gain in these cattle populations. 119. Light Transmission Through a Hollow Core Fiber Bundle

Abstract

This paper reports on the fabrication and performance of a fiber bundle with seven hollow cores arranged in a hexagonal pattern. The bundle shows individual core transmission with less than 0.07% core-to-core coupling over a length of 11 cm. Each core exhibits several transmission windows in the visible to near infrared region. These low attenuation regions with large higher order mode suppression are a result of anti-resonant guidance due to the negative curvature membranes encircling the cores. The central core exhibits the widest transmission window with a minimum loss of 4 dB/m between 1250 nm and 1450 nm. The lowest loss for the central core is estimated to be 2.5 dB/m at 600 nm. Such hollow core fiber bundles may be employed in applications including communication, imaging systems, high power laser delivery, or sensing.

120. Accurate Loss Prediction of Realistic Hollow-Core Anti-Resonant Fibers Using Machine Learning

Abstract

Hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARFs) have proven to be an indispensable platform for various emerging applications due to their unique and extraordinary optical properties. However, accurately estimating the propagation loss of nested HC-ARFs remains a challenging task due to their complex structure and the lack of precise analytical and theoretical models. To address this challenge, we propose a supervised machine-learning framework that presents an effective solution to accurately predict the propagation loss of a 5-tube nested HC-ARF. Multiple supervised learning models, including random forest, logistic regression, quadratic discriminant analysis, tree-based methods, extreme gradient boosting, and K-nearest neighbors are implemented and compared using a simulated dataset. Among these methods, the random forest algorithm is identified as the most effective, delivering accurate predictions. Notably, this study considers the impact of random structural perturbations on fiber geometry, encompassing random variations in tube wall thicknesses and tube gap separations. In particular, these perturbations involve randomly varying outer and nested tube wall thicknesses, tube angle offsets, and randomly distributed non-circular, anisotropic shapes within the cladding structure. It is worth noting that these specific perturbations have not been previously investigated. Each tube exhibits its unique set of random values, leading to longer simulation times for combinations of these values compared to regular random variables in HC-ARFs with similar tube characteristics. The comprehensive consideration of these factors allows for precise predictions, significantly contributing to the advancement of HC-ARFs for many emerging applications.

Abstract

Conventional optical fibres can only guide light in a high refractive index core by total internal reflection. By using total internal reflections it is not possible to guide light in an air core. Light guidance in air is of great interest for various technological and scientific applications and has only recently been possible with the advent of photonic band gap fibres. However, the transmission performance of silica/air hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres has until now been affected by the existence of surface modes. These surface modes couple with the air-guided mode in specific spectral ranges inside the bandgap simultaneously increasing the attenuation and dispersion of the air-guided mode and reducing the useable bandwidth of the fibre. Therefore, for many applications it is important to eliminate surface modes or at least reduce their impact on the air mode. The fabrication of the first hollow-core photonic bandgap fibre with no surface modes is presented in this thesis. The fibre has state-of-the-art attenuation over the full spectral width of the bandgap. As a result of the elimination of surface modes the fibre presents increased bandwidth, reduced dispersion and dispersion slope compared to previous hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers. These advances have been possible due to the development of a modified fabrication method which makes the production of low-loss hollow-core fibers both simpler and 5 to 6 times quicker than previously. This development makes hollow-core fibres with improved performance more readily available than ever before
