This recommendation describes the curriculum and example materials to give Early Career Researchers (ECR’s) the foundational skills in Data Science to work with their data. This curriculum combines technical skills, such as Software Carpentry with responsible research practices such as Open and Responsible Research. This curriculum is composed of: a set of curriculum specifications for the modules run in this curriculum, an example timetable for a 10-day intensive training event, a diagram to show how these modules are connected, a spreadsheet of links to example materials that implements this, metadata for the submission, an impact statement, a document discussing the maintenance plan of the materials. The purpose of this curriculum is to be deliberately broad and shallow to be delivered over approximately 70 contact hours. It could also form the basis for a much deeper programme which will not be explored further. In 2016 we ran one school in Trieste, Italy. In 2017 we ran two, Trieste and São Paulo, Brazil. In 2018 we ran three, Trieste, São Paulo and Kigali, Rwanda. In 2019 we will run fourschools (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Trieste, Abuja, Nigeria and San José in Costa Rica). At the end of this year approximately 400 students will have been taught on four continents using the curriculum developed here. The DEEP-HybridDataCloud project researches on intensive computing techniques such as deep learning, that require specialized GPU hardware to explore very large datasets, through a hybrid-cloud approach that enables access to such resources. We understand the needs of our user communities and help them to combine their services in a way that encapsulates technical details the end user does not have to deal with.

From the end of the 19th century, the French colonisation of Maghreb saw the birth of a cultural production deeply rooted in its historical-geographical context, characterised by a style and sometimes by contents that are essentially comic. These texts, which are often literary in nature, mostly illustrate the colonial world. They are written in Pataouète, the common language, the Patois of the Algerian French or, at least, they bear some resemblance to it. The remaining texts, which are the particular subject of this article, instead, consist of so-called ‘Sabir literature’, taking the form of texts describing the colonial Other, which is mainly Arabic. This ‘Sabir literature’ gives voice to the colonial Other in an idiom that is very different from French but that derives from it, also in its local form, although in what is, in essence, imprecise, sounding like caricature – the Sabir, being a French badly understood and badly spoken language by less-educated Arabic-speakers in their relationships with the French-speakers. This essay traces the history of the teaching of French literature at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the lines of development of related research, from the founding of the Royal High School of Commerce to the present day. The colonies created by the French, in America and elsewhere, had from the late 17th Century to 1848 a principle that governed slavery, meaning the colonies’ fundamental social, political and economic aspects. The Law, the so-called Code Noir, laid down the principles to be followed – but how far was it followed in reality? Literary testimonies coming from of the ‘black’ colonial side make clear that the law was enforced in a one-way manner: the interests of the master settlers and their nations were always protected most rigorously, while the meagre rights that were granted in theory to slaves were largely, if not systematically, disregarded. We will compare therefore what the law stipulates with what was passed down by colonial and post-colonial literature.

In the wide field of postcolonial studies, there exist related or similar areas whose stories are nevertheless very different, if not indeed opposed. This is the case of catechisms in Romance languages (or of Romance origin), outcomes of European colonization. In particular, contradictions between the history of catechisms from Hispanic-American colonization and the catechisms produced by French colonization, in America and elsewhere. The latter appear a century and a half after the Spanish texts, and exhibit completely distinct characteristics: different periods, settings, actors, and especially recipients. I set out to recount the often adventurous history of the oldest catechisms in the French colonies, or ex-colonies, of the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. Written in Creole or sometimes other indigenous languages, they are precious linguistic records. Compiled in the colonies, but not always published, these texts are often forgotten, lost, misplaced, resurfaced, discovered.
