Abstract

Il progetto intende verificare l’eventuale miglioramento nell’apprendimento di metodi e problemi classici dell’informatica proponendoli come gioco ed attraverso strumenti appropriati per le generazioni attuali di studenti. Il progetto promuove un approccio Learning-Centered e di collaborazione tra gli studenti (Collaborative-Learning). Allo scopo si è realizzato un prototipo per LIM, progettandolo insieme alle insegnanti di una scuola secondaria di primo grado e perseguendo perciò i dettami del Participative Design. Il prototipo rievoca il quotidiano e gli interessi degli studenti. Il progetto ha coinvolto gli studenti di due classi terze di una Scuola Secondaria di I grado nella risoluzione del noto problema informatico dello zaino. Una sola classe ha utilizzato la LIM ed ha ottenuto risultati migliori dell’altra sviluppando collaborazione fra studenti per il raggiungimento dell’obiettivo.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess long-term effects for women following the use of magnesium sulphate for pre-eclampsia. DESIGN: Assessment at 2-3 years after delivery for women recruited to the Magpie Trial (recruitment in 1998-2001, ISRCTN 86938761), which compared magnesium sulphate with placebo for pre-eclampsia. SETTING: Follow up after discharge from hospital at 125 centres in 19 countries across five continents. POPULATION: A total of 7927 women were randomised at the follow-up centres. Of these women, 2544 were not included for logistic reasons and 601 excluded (109 at a centre where <20% of women were contacted, 466 discharged without a surviving child and 26 opted out). Therefore, 4782 women were selected for follow-up, of whom 3375 (71%) were traced. METHODS: Questionnaire assessment was administered largely by post or in a dedicated clinic. Interview assessment of selected women was performed. Main outcome measures Death or serious morbidity potentially related to pre-eclampsia at follow up, other morbidity and use of health service resources. RESULTS: Median time from delivery to follow up was 26 months (interquartile range 19-36). Fifty-eight of 1650 (3.5%) women allocated magnesium sulphate died or had serious morbidity potentially related to pre-eclampsia compared with 72 of 1725 (4.2%) women allocated placebo (relative risk 0.84, 95% CI 0.60-1.18). CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in the risk of eclampsia following prophylaxis with magnesium sulphate was not associated with an excess of death or disability for the women after 2 years.

Abstract

Amyloid accumulation in the brain of Alzheimer's patients results from altered processing of the 39- to 43-amino acid amyloid β protein (Aβ). The mechanisms for the elevated amyloid (Aβ(1-42)) are considered to be over-expression of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), enhanced cleavage of APP to Aβ, and decreased clearance of Aβ from the central nervous system (CNS). We report herein studies of Aβ stimulated effects on endothelial cells. We observe an interesting and as yet unprecedented feedback effect involving Aβ(1-42) fibril-induced synthesis of APP by Western blot analysis in the endothelial cell line Hep-1. We further observe an increase in the expression of Aβ(1-40) by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. This phenomenon is reproducible for cultures grown both in the presence and absence of serum. In the former case, flow cytometry reveals that Aβ(1-40) accumulation is less pronounced than under serum-free conditions. Immunofluorescence staining further corroborates these observations. Cellular responses to fibrillar Aβ(1-42) treatment involving eNOS upregulation and increased autophagy are also reported.

Abstract

Results from the Ground-based and Airborne Measurements of Aerosol Radiative Forcing (GAMARF) campaign carried out at Lampedusa island in 2008 are presented. The campaign was focussed on measurements of longwave (LW) irradiance profiles up to 4 km, until now absent in the Mediterranean Sea, and to the estimation of shortwave (SW) and LW aerosol direct radiative forcings (ADRFs), using data collected by ground-based and airborne instrumentation and radiative transfer simulations. The SW and LW ADRFs have been calculated for a case of desert dust characterized by relatively large aerosol optical depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present paper introduces a numerical study on the fire behavior of composites during exposure to a heating source at high-incident power. A three-dimensional novel numerical model is proposed, which is able to simulate the behavior of composite materials in fire environment providing the composites mass loss rate, heat release rate, and total heat released during the heating source application. The ANSYS commercial FEM software has been selected as the platform for the implementation of the proposed numerical model. The use of the ANSYS Parametric Design Language has allowed the ANSYS FEM code to numerically simulate, by a stop–restart incremental procedure, all the most relevant physical phenomena related to fire. As an application, a cone calorimeter experiment over a laminated composite plate has been numerically simulated, and the numerical model has been validated by comparing the ANSYS numerical results to experimental literature data in terms of temperature profile over the panel thickness, mass loss rate, heat release rate, and total heat released. An excellent agreement has been found between the obtained numerical results and the experimental test, confirming the validity of the proposed three-dimensional tool, taking into account the specimen edge effects, which has perspectives of application to the assessment of the fire performance of complex composite structural components. Abstract

This paper describes a hybrid silicon/plastic chip which is used to analyze DNA samples without the need of fluorescence or surface functionalization. The viscosity and density of the solutions to be tested are measured using a vibrating silicon beam immersed in the fluid. The sensitivity of the chip with respect to DNA concentration and length is analyzed, yielding a limit of detection of 0.5 μg/μl. We show that the sensitivity of the chip is statistically significant for PCR end-point detection. State-of-the-art on-chip detection methods of DNA solutions need optical devices or specially designed reactions. Abstract

It is very difficult to evaluate the ability of carrying out physical exercise in patients with rate responsive (RR) pacemaker (PM). However, the anaerobic threshold (AT) proved to be a useful parameter in the evaluation of cardiac function. The AT can be easily reproduced and not influenced from emotional aspects of both the patient and the physician, moreover being under maximum and then easy to achieve. Aims of our study were: to evaluate if the cardiopulmonary stress test can represent a method to be used for a more correct rate responsive pacemaker programming; to compare the data obtained of 3 rate responsive pacemakers steered by different sensors. We have studied 24 patients, of whom 10 with Activitrax (A), 8 with Meta (M), and 6 with Phymos MPT (P) pacemakers. Patients were submitted to symptoms limited cycloergometer stress test at 2 different settings: fixed rate at 70 b/min; increasing rate at until 85% of maximum heart rate for each patient, with range 0 + 10 W/min. Abstract

Background: In a subgroup of patients suffering from progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), which is an inflammation-mediated neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS), B cell aggregates were discovered within the meninges. Occurrence of these structures was associated with a more severe disease course and cortical histopathology. We have developed the B cell-dependent MP4-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) as a mouse model to mimic this trait of the human disease. The aim of this study was to determine a potential role of lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) and TH17 cells in the process of B cell aggregate formation in the MP4 model.Methods: We performed flow cytometry of cerebellar and splenic tissue of MP4-immunized mice in the acute and chronic stage of the disease to analyze the presence of CD3-CD5-CD4+RORγt+ LTi and CD3+CD5+CD4+RORγt+ TH17 cells. Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG):35-55-induced EAE was used as B cell-independent control model. We further determined the gene expression profile of B cell aggregates using laser capture microdissection, followed by RNA sequencing.Results: While we were able to detect LTi cells in the embryonic spleen and adult intestine, which served as positive controls, there was no evidence for the existence of such a population in acute or chronic EAE in neither of the two models. Yet, we detected CD3-CD5-CD4-RORγt+ innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and TH17 cells in the CNS, the latter especially in the chronic stage of MP4-induced EAE. Moreover, we observed a unique gene signature in CNS B cell aggregates compared to draining lymph nodes of MP4-immunized mice and to cerebellum as well as draining lymph nodes of mice with MOG:35-55-induced EAE.Conclusion: The absence of LTi cells in the cerebellum suggests that other cells might take over the function as an initiator of lymphoid tissue formation in the CNS. Overall, the development of ectopic lymphoid organs is a complex process based on an interplay between several molecules and signals. Abstract

The equilibrium between plasma and peritoneal dialysis fluid has been studies for 23 amino acids during peritoneal exchanges at dwell times up to 8 hours in patients on CAPD. It is demonstrated that equilibration is a particular process typical for each amino acid which after 8 hour is nearly complete only for Glycine, Alanine and Asparagine.
