Abstract

Abstract Background Breast carcinoma is a disease with a tremendous heterogeneity in its clinical behavior. Newer prognostic factors and predictors of response to therapy are needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of HER-2, estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) in breast carcinoma and to compare it with other prognostic parameters such as histological type and grade, tumor size, patients' age, and lymph node metastases. Patients and methods This is a retrospective study conducted in the department of pathology at Sfax University Hospital. Confirmed 155 Cases of breast carcinoma were reviewed in the period between January 2000 and December 2004. We used immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of HER-2, ER, and PR receptor and Chi-square and Fisher exact test to correlate immunohistochemical findings with prognostic parameters for breast carcinoma such as patients' age, tumor size, histological type, histological grade and lymph node status. Results The mean age of patients was 51.5 years, ranging from 22 to 89 years. 80 (51.6%) of the patients were below 50 years. The percentage of expression of HER-2, ER and PR was 26, 59.4, and 52.3%, respectively. HER-2 was over-expressed (3+) in 18.1% of the cases, was inversely related to ER expression (p = 0.00) and to PR expression (p = 0.048). This over-expression was also associated with a high tumor grade with marginal significance (p = 0.072). A negative correlation was noted between ER and PR expression and SBR grade (p = 0.000) and ER and age (p = 0.002). Conclusion HER-2 over-expression was observed in 18.1% of Tunisian breast carcinoma affecting female patients. This group presents apparently an aggressive form of breast carcinoma with high histological grade and negative ER.

Abstract

This work introduces a blockchain-based secure medical prescription-management system seamlessly integrated with a dynamic Internet of Things (IoT) framework. Notably, this integration constitutes a pivotal challenge in the arena of resource-constrained IoT devices: energy consumption. The choice of a suitable blockchain consensus mechanism emerges as the linchpin in surmounting this hurdle. Thus, this paper conducts a comprehensive comparison of energy consumption between two distinct consensus mechanisms: Proof of Work (PoW) and Quorum-based Byzantine fault tolerance (QBFT). Furthermore, an assessment of the most energy-efficient algorithm is performed across multiple networks and various parameters. This approach ensures the acquisition of reliable and statistically significant data, enabling meaningful conclusions to be drawn about the system’s performance in real-world scenarios. The experimental results show that, compared to the PoW, the QBFT consensus mechanism reduced the energy consumption by an average of 5%. This finding underscores the significant advantage of QBFT in addressing the energy consumption challenges posed by resource-constrained IoT devices. In addition to its inherent benefits of privacy and block time efficiency, the Quorum blockchain emerges as a more sustainable choice for IoT applications due to its lower power consumption.

Abstract

Background: Traditional budgeting has faced criticism, leading researchers to explore alternative management control methods such as Beyond Budgeting. Despite its potential benefits, Beyond Budgeting adoption remains limited. Aim: This research investigates Beyond Budgeting’s effect on Iraqi small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) performance, focusing on competitive advantage. Setting: The study targets Iraqi SMEs, considering their diverse business landscape. A random sample of 353 accountants was chosen from a research community of 22 974 individuals. SPSS and AMOS 26 software and a custom questionnaire were used. Method: The authors conducted multiple linear regression analysis and Structural Equation Modeling to address our study’s objectives. Additionally, we utilised maximum likelihood procedures to assess factor loadings, construct validity and reliability. Results: Beyond Budgeting implementation significantly affected both financial and nonfinancial performance. It demonstrated positive effects on cost leadership and competitive advantage differentiation. However, an indirect negative impact on nonfinancial performance was observed through the influence on cost leadership, suggesting a trade-off between cost reduction and other nonfinancial factors. Conclusion: The study acknowledges limitations in sample size and the need for considering additional factors. Further research is required to understand Beyond Budgeting’s limited adoption in Iraq. The study contributes valuable insights on Beyond Budgeting as a substitute for traditional approaches, benefiting managers and policymakers. Contribution: This study emphasises Beyond Budgeting’s significant impact on Iraqi SME performance, highlighting the relationship between Beyond Budgeting, competitive advantage strategies, financial and nonfinancial performance. The findings provide insights for enhancing budgeting practices in Iraqi SMEs.

Abstract

We study a multi-objective scheduling problem on two dedicated processors. The aim is to minimize simultaneously the makespan, the total tardiness and the total completion time. This NP-hard problem requires the use of well-adapted methods. For this, we adapted genetic algorithms to multi-objective case. Three methods are presented to solve this problem. The first is aggregative, the second is Pareto and the third is non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). We proposed some adapted lower bounds for each criterion to evaluate the quality of the found results on a large set of instances. Indeed, these bounds also make it possible to determine the dominance of one algorithm over another based on the different results found by each of them. We used two metrics to measure the quality of the Pareto front: the hypervolume indicator (HV) and the number of solutions in the optimal front (ND). Abstract

To take into account nuclear quantum effects on the dynamics of atoms, the path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) method used since 1980s is based on the formalism developed by R. P. Feynman. However, the huge computation time required for the PIMD reduces its range of applicability. Another drawback is the requirement of additional techniques to access time correlation functions (ring polymer MD or centroid MD). We developed an alternative technique based on a quantum thermal bath (QTB) which reduces the computation time by a factor of ~20. The QTB approach consists in a classical Langevin dynamics in which the white noise random force is replaced by a Gaussian random force having the power spectral density given by the quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The method has yielded satisfactory results for weakly anharmonic systems: the quantum harmonic oscillator, the heat capacity of a MgO crystal, and isotope effects in 7 LiH and 7 LiD. Unfortunately, the QTB is subject to the problem of zero-point energy leakage (ZPEL) in highly anharmonic systems, which is inherent in the use of classical mechanics. Indeed, a part of the energy of the high-frequency modes is transferred to the low-frequency modes leading to a wrong energy distribution. We have shown that in order to reduce or even eliminate ZPEL, it is sufficient to increase the value of the frictional coefficient. Another way to solve the ZPEL problem is to combine the QTB and PIMD techniques. It requires the modification of the power spectral density of the random force within the QTB. This combination can also be seen as a way to speed up the PIMD.

140. Microstructural, Mechanical and Tribological Behaviors of Cu/LLDPE-Based Composite Coatings for Lightweight Applications

Abstract

This research work focuses on the development and analysis of copper-filled linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) coatings deposited on LLDPE substrate via a thermocompression process. A dry mechanical mixing technique is employed to mix the copper–LLDPE powders. This relevant technology aims to develop new solid lubricating layered composite coatings without a negative environmental impact. Four different materials of the coatings are considered, i.e., LLDPE + 2 wt.% Cu, LLDPE + 6 wt.% Cu, LLDPE + 10 wt.% Cu and LLDPE + 20 wt.% Cu. The microstructural characterizations indicate a good degree of dispersion and adhesion between the continuous and dispersed phases at 20 wt.% Cu coatings. The mechanical properties of the pure polymer and the fully filled composite materials are investigated experimentally using tensile tests and Micro-Vickers hardness. The stiffness, hardness and mechanical strength of the composites are enhanced. Friction tests are also carried out via a linear reciprocating sliding tribometer. The incorporation of copper powder has a significant improvement on the friction and wear properties of the developed coatings. Higher copper powder loading provides a lower friction coefficient and wear volume loss. The best tribological performances are obtained with the LLDPE + 20 wt.% Cu coating. The wear mechanism of the LLDPE substrate is severe adhesive wear, and it becomes mild abrasive wear in case of the 20 wt.% Cu coating.
