This paper presents the application of Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm to solve the Voltage Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow (VSCOPF) problem. Two different control strategies are proposed to improve voltage stability of the system under different operating conditions. The first approach is based on the corrective control in contingency state with minimization of voltage stability index and real power control variable adjustments as objectives. The second approach involves optimal placement and sizing of multi-type FACTS devices, Static VAR Compensator and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor along with generator rescheduling for minimization of voltage stability index and investment cost of FACTS devices. A fuzzy based approach is employed to get the best compromise solution from the trade off curve to aid the decision maker. The effectiveness of the proposed VSCOPF problem is demonstrated on two typical systems, IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57 bus test systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper identifies suitable learning algorithm for neural network based Economic Load Dispatch (ELD). ELD is an important problem in real time power system planning and Operation. The conventional methods used for economic load dispatch are iterative techniques & takes longer time for computation. Neural Network (NN) provides an alternate solution for on-line Load Dispatch. The on-line Load Dispatch requires the NN model to be accurate, simple and structurally compact to ensure faster execution time for effective load dispatch. This in turn to a large extent depends on the type of Neural Learning algorithms used to train the Neural Architecture. The feed forward neural architecture is trained off-line using three types of learning algorithms to solve economic load dispatch problem. Their performance is compared in terms of accuracy, computational complexity and structural compactness. The results are extensively validated for IEEE 26 Bus system. In this paper, unit commitment (UC) problem with POZ constraint is proposed. A simple dynamic programming method is used to UC. Various constraints such as power balance, minimum up time & down time, ramp up & down, next hour load and most specifically prohibited operating zone constraint is also considered. With a growing concern for maintaining stable voltage operation within the network, many critical issues on voltage stability related studies have been raised in the area of power system research. The problem of voltage stability is one of the main concerns in the operation of power systems. Due to the excessive load demand and non-linearity in loads leads to voltage instability and ultimately leading to voltage collapse. Voltage collapse has to be given the utmost priority because it led to cascading blackouts in the whole network. A voltage stability index is that which examines the voltage stability condition formulated based on line in a power system and identifies sensitive bus of the system to maintain the stable system, which will be great importance. With the help of Voltage stability index, the point of voltage collapse, critical line and critical voltage with respect to load bus are identified. Also this paper deals the development of the sensitive area clustering technique based on the results obtained from voltage stability analysis and contingency analysis. A new method for solving profit based hydrothermal scheduling in a deregulated energy scenario is proposed in this paper. The objective of hydrothermal scheduling is to minimize the total cost of the filel taking into considerations of both steam and hydraulic constraints. The proposed method proves to provide the most optimal scheduling for generating companies (GENCO) by considering generated power and reserve generation. Here, the thermal power to be generated is calculated by subtracting the hydro power from load demands for various periods. The Unit Commitment (UC) is performed for thermal units so that on/off status of generating units in a power systems are obtained by taking into consideration the generated power and reserve constraints of the generating units. In traditional unit commitment problem, the objective is minimizing the total fuel cost satisfying the constraints along with it. But due to the revolution in restructuring of power market, the objective of unit commitment problem has taken a new formulation to emphasize its importance in profit without considering social benefit. This paper proposes Evolutionary Programming (EP) technique for hydrothermal scheduling for three thermal and four hydro units. It explains how the GENCO must sell the generated power in a deregulated environment and how generators are to be scheduled to yield maximum profit. FLEXIBLE AC transmission systems (FACTS) have been developed for better control of electric power flow through the efficient utilization of existing transmission lines. In its most exotic form, the unified power-flow controller (UPFC) is a FACTS controller consisting of power-electronic components that can be employed for controlling the magnitude and phase angle of the line voltage and the line impedance simultaneously. However, excessive installation and operating costs do not justify widespread use of such a controller. To address this issue, the designing of converter-less FACTS device has been introduced. This converter less FACTS device has been designed using the traditional technology of transformer and taps, commonly known as "SEN" Transformer. The ST uses time-tested components, such as transformers and tap changers, and injects a voltage of variable magnitude and phase angle, such as a UPFC, in series with the transmission line, thereby regulating the active and reactive power flow in the line independently. DC-AC power converters (inverters) are widely used today mainly in uninterruptible power supply systems, AC motor drives, induction heating and renewable energy source systems etc. High-Frequency Inverters (HFI) have been applied in DC-AC power conversion in which size and weight are of important considerations. The basic such model uses an RCD snubber to dampen the voltage spike which occurs due to transformer leakage inductance. But this causes a considerable snubber power loss which reduces the system efficiency. Whereas the implementation of the regenerative snubber reduces the voltage spike and at the same time snubber stored energy is fed back to the input/output side to improve the system efficiency. This paper presents the HFI with active regenerative snubber to recover the snubber energy into the output side. MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results and experimental results are presented. High switching frequency operation, with converter loss kept at minimum, is possible through the use of Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) technique. High power factor operation can be achieved in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, since the input current is inherently close to sinusoidal due to the current injection PWM technique. High frequency operation is necessary to reduce the size of reactive components. Further, for MOSFET-based converters, ZVS is required for efficient operation to reduce or eliminate heat sink requirements. Resonant converters were well documented to meet both of these requirements. The aim of this work was to develop simulink models for Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter and closed loop DC to DC converter. Resonant power converters have many advantages over Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) power converters, such as lower switching losses at higher switching frequencies, easier EMI filtering, reduced component stress and higher efficiency. High switching loss considerably reduces the converter efficiency. The use of soft-switching techniques, alleviate switching loss problems and allow a significant increase in the converter switching frequency. At increased frequency the converter can employ smaller sized magnetic elements and filter components. Resonant converters eliminate most of the switching losses. The advantages of Parallel Resonant Converter (PRC) are that the output dc filter capacitor does not carry high ripple current and also it exhibits good voltage regulation. In the present work Parallel Resonant Converter (PRC) with Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) for the 12 V DC output is designed with High Frequency (HF) and the simulation results are presented. Estimating the margin in the loadability of the power system is essential in the real time voltage stability assessment. Voltage stability is currently one of the most important research areas in the field of electrical power system. The condition of voltage stability in a power system can be known using Voltage Stability Indices (L
mn ). The loading margin is one of the most widely known and accepted Lmn . Voltage Stability Indices can be useful for estimating the distance from the current operating point to voltage collapse point. The indices can either reveal the critical bus of a power system or the stability of each line connected between two buses in an interconnected network or evaluate the voltage stability margins of a system. Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices have been proposed as an effective solution for controlling power flow and regulating bus voltage in electrical power systems, resulting in an increased transfer capability, low system losses, and improved stability. However to what extent the performance of FACTS devices can be brought out highly depends upon the location and the parameters of these devices. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is the most promising FACTS device for power flow control. The performance of this index is presented and the effectiveness of the analyzed methods is demonstrated through simulation studies in IEEE 14 bus reliability test systems.
