Abstract

Transition metal vanadates have shown potential in applications as sensors, in photocatalysis, and recently, because of their high theoretical capacity, safety, easy preparation, and low cost, as electrode materials for primary and rechargeable batteries. Motivated by these relevant applications, much research work has been done on the synthesis and electrochemical studies of various 1D transition metal vanadates. Metal vanadates are normally synthesized by hydrothermal methods at high temperatures and pressures, making the synthesis expensive, and the control of the microstructure and composition difficult to achieve. Vanadium can currently be found in the slag by-products of certain steel production processes, and the development of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery and purification is relevant, mostly from alkaline media. Various methods are being investigated for separation of the metal value from alkaline leach feeds, including solvent extraction. In case of the recovery of vanadium an interesting modification of the conventional solvent extraction process is the addition of a crystallization operation (precipitation stripping). In this work, the extraction was carried out using an Aliquat 336 solution in n-octanol/kerosene as extractant. Precipitation stripping was carried out using several metal salts dissolved in a concentrated chloride solution. For some experiments, polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as stabilizer in order to avoid agglomeration and to control growth. The structural characteristics of the crystallized products were studied. From the results, the synthesis of nanostructured vanadates is a simple and versatile method for the fabrication of valuable vanadium compounds.

Abstract

Our understanding of the climatic teleconnections that drove ice-age cycles has been limited by a paucity of well-dated tropical records of glaciation that span several glacial–interglacial intervals. Glacial deposits offer discrete snapshots of glacier extent but cannot provide the continuous records required for detailed interhemispheric comparisons. By contrast, lakes located within glaciated catchments can provide continuous archives of upstream glacial activity, but few such records extend beyond the last glacial cycle. Here a piston core from Lake Junín in the uppermost Amazon basin provides the first, to our knowledge, continuous, independently dated archive of tropical glaciation spanning 700,000 years. We find that tropical glaciers tracked changes in global ice volume and followed a clear approximately 100,000-year periodicity. An enhancement in the extent of tropical Andean glaciers relative to global ice volume occurred between 200,000 and 400,000 years ago, during sustained intervals of regionally elevated hydrologic balance that modified the regular approximately 23,000-year pacing of monsoon-driven precipitation. Millennial-scale variations in the extent of tropical Andean glaciers during the last glacial cycle were driven by variations in regional monsoon strength that were linked to temperature perturbations in Greenland ice cores1; these interhemispheric connections may have existed during previous glacial cycles.

Abstract

One of the achievements of Peruvian higher education is that it has recognized the need for this type of education to be inclusive. That is, certain vulnerable social sectors also can study for a university degree. Within this group are individuals with special abilities, such as the blind, people with motor problems, among others of this type, although people with economic problems and others who are discriminated against for having suffered prison regimes, because of their gender, race, among others can also be included. To make a reality this idea of inclusion, inclusive teaching programs are needed, which also comprise several programs, from which to choose one. The purpose of this paper is to design a technique that allows decision makers to select among several proposed programs the one that is the most suitable for this type of teaching. To this end, we propose a method to evaluate five dimensions of inclusive education, hybridizing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique with plithogenic sets. The Plithogenic AHP method allows us making the most appropriate decision, with the degree of complexity proper of decision making in education, considering the various components that are part of the training of the university students. 115. Precipitation stripping of V(V) as a novel approach for the preparation of transition metal vanadates

Abstract

Transition metal vanadates, and particularly copper vanadates (CVO), have shown potential in applications as sensors, in photocatalysis, and recently, because of their high theoretical capacity, safety, easy preparation, and low cost, as electrode materials for primary and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). During discharge, the Cu2+ is reduced, and, more than one lithium ion per vanadium react, giving a high theoretical discharge capacity. Motivated by this relevant application, much research work has been done on the synthesis and electrochemical studies of various 1D transition metal vanadates. Among them, particularly Cu3V2O7(OH)2.2H2O has been studied as an electrode for primary lithium batteries with a high storage capacity. CVO and other metal vanadates are normally synthesized by hydrothermal methods at high temperatures and pressures, making the synthesis expensive, and the control of the microstructure and composition difficult to achieve. An interesting modification of the conventional solvent extraction process is the addition of a crystallization operation, where low-solubility metal salts such as oxalates, oxides, or sulfides can be precipitated (precipitation stripping). In this work, copper vanadate nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple synthetic route by solvent extraction and precipitation stripping. The extraction was carried out by ion exchange using a 20% (v/v) Aliquat 336 solution in n-octanol/kerosene as extractant, and an alkaline aqueous solution (0.1 M NaOH) prepared using vanadium pentoxide (V(V) concentration 2 g/L). Precipitation stripping was carried out using copper sulphate (0.01, 0.05 and 1 mol/L) dissolved in a concentrated chloride solution (4 mol/L). For some experiments, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Sigma Aldrich, ~44,000 g/mol) was used as stabilizer in order to avoid agglomeration and control growth. The prepared materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). The obtained diffractograms could be indexed to the Cu3V2O7(OH)2.2H2O phase, space group: C2/m(12), JCPDS Card No. 46-1443, corresponding to volborthite, an uncommon secondary mineral formed in the oxidized zone of vanadium-bearing hydrothermal mineral deposits, monoclinic or pseudohexagonal and forms normally rosette-like aggregates of scaly crystals. The copper vanadate particles are nanometrical in size, with morphologies varying from nanowires to spherical particles (in presence of PVP)

Abstract

La asociación de absceso hepático amebiano y embarazo es poco frecuente y se asocia a un aumento de la morbilidad y mortalidad materna. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 33 años, cursando un embarazo de 35 semanas, que ingresó a nuestro servicio con el diagnóstico de absceso hepático, cuya etiología fue E. histolytica.The appearance of amebic liver abscess in pregnancy is uncommon and is associated to increased maternal morbidity and mortality. We report the case of 33 years old woman, with a 35 weeks pregnancy that was admitted in our Hospital with the diagnosis of liver abscess, whose etiology was E. histolytica.

Abstract

Background and aim: Over 80% (365/454) of the nation’s centers participated in the Italian Society of Nephrology COVID-19 Survey. Out of 60,441 surveyed patients, 1368 were infected as of April 23rd, 2020. However, center-specific proportions showed substantial heterogeneity. We therefore undertook new analyses to identify explanatory factors, contextual effects, and decision rules for infection containment. Methods: We investigated fixed factors and contextual effects by multilevel modeling. Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis was used to develop decision rules. Results: Increased positivity among hemodialysis patients was predicted by center location [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20–1.51], positive healthcare workers (IRR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02–1.17), test-all policy (IRR 5.94, 95% CI 3.36–10.45), and infected proportion in the general population (IRR 1.002, 95% CI 1.001–1.003) (all p < 0.01). Conversely, lockdown duration exerted a protective effect (IRR 0.95, 95% CI 0.94–0.98) (p < 0.01). The province-contextual effects accounted for 10% of the total variability. Predictive factors for peritoneal dialysis and transplant cases were center location and infected proportion in the general population. Using recursive partitioning, we identified decision thresholds at general population incidence ≥ 229 per 100,000 and at ≥ 3 positive healthcare workers. Conclusions: Beyond fixed risk factors, shared with the general population, the increased and heterogeneous proportion of positive patients is related to the center’s testing policy, the number of positive patients and healthcare workers, and to contextual effects at the province level. Nephrology centers may adopt simple decision rules to strengthen containment measures timely.

El hiperparatiroidismo primario (HPTP) se caracteriza por una hipersecreción autónoma de paratohormona (PTH), lo que provoca hipercalcemia e hipercalciuria, con afectación ósea, renal y de otras partes del organismo, en grado variable. El HPTP tiene una prevalencia de 1 en 1000 en la población general y se presenta con mayor frecuencia en mujeres que en hombres. Es infrecuente su presentación en el embarazo, y sus complicaciones derivadas de la hipercalcemia pueden afectar tanto a la madre como al feto. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 37 años, cursando un embarazo de 10 semanas, que ingresó al servicio con los diagnósticos de nefrocalcinosis y pielonefritis aguda, a la que se diagnosticó un hiperparatiroidismo primario, cuya etiología fue un adenoma paratiroideo único.Primary hyperparathyroidism (HPTP) is a disorder characterized by elevated levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which leads to hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria, with variable osseous, renal and other systems affectation. HPTP has a prevalence of 1:1000 in general population and is more frequent in women than men. It is very rare during pregnancy, and its complications are produced by hypercalcemia and they can affect the mother and the fetus. We present the case of a 37 year old woman, with a 10+2 weeks pregnancy that was admitted in our Hospital with nephrocalcinosis and urinary tract infection, whom was diagnosed primary hyperparathyroidism, whose etiology was a single parathyroid adenoma.

Abstract

Objective: To photodegrade Diuron with TiO2-Al2O3 nanomaterials supported on graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) Design/methodology/approach: The synthesis of the materials was carried out by the sol-gel method under mild conditions. Subsequently, the obtained materials were subjected to thermal processing for structural stabilization and pulverized. Synthesized nanomaterials were then characterized by nitrogen adsorption/ desorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Uv-Vis spectroscopy. Results: The adsorption/desorption results indicated that the ternary TiO2-Al2O3/GnPs nanomaterials were found to have complex porosity, which suggested that TiO2-Al2O3 was formed on agglomerated GnPs. X-ray diffraction data revealed that the anatase phase of TiO2 and the -Al2O3 phase coexist with the crystalline phase of graphene. The morphology of the materials indicates that the nanoplatelets were randomly dispersed in a continuous mixed oxide phase. About the UV analysis, the presence of GnPs at 1 wt % concentration reduces the band gap by 6%. Limitations on study/implications: The physical and chemical properties of GnPs make the material an excellent candidate for the degradation of pollutants by photocatalysis. Findings/conclusions: The addition of GnPs improved the Diuron degradation, probably by forming a nanostructured interface or heterojunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Thyroid hormones (THs) are important mediators of brown adipose tissue (BAT) differentiation. However, the association of TH concentrations with human BAT is unclear. The present work examines the associations between circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and THs concentrations (i.e. free triiodothyronine, FT3, and free thyroxine, FT4), under thermoneutral (22-23 degrees C) and cold-induced conditions, and BAT volume, F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18-FDG) uptake and mean radiodensity.Methods: A total of 106 young healthy, euthyroid adults (34 men/72 women; 22.0 +/- 2.1 years old; 24.9 +/- 4.6 kg/m(2)) participated in this cross-sectional study. BAT volume, F-18-FDG uptake and mean radiodensity were assessed after 2 h of personalized (i.e. contemplating each individual's shivering threshold) cold exposure via positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) static scanning. TSH and THs levels were determined before (thermoneutral) and 1 h after the cold exposure.Results: Cold exposure increased circulating FT4 (P = 0.038) and reduced TSH levels (P 0.111) or cold-induced levels (all P > 0.067) and BAT volume, F-18-FDG uptake and mean radiodensity. These findings were independent of sex and BMI.Conclusions: Thyroid function is modulated by cold exposure, yet it is not associated with BAT volume or glucose metabolism assessed after 2 h of cold exposure in young healthy, euthyroid adults.
