101. Comparisons among Individual and Cooperative Performance Assessments and Other Measures of Mathematics Competence.

Abstract

Examined how well three measures, representing points on a traditional-alternative mathematics assessment continuum, discriminated fourth graders achieving above, at, and below grade level, and how cooperative testing affected performance assessment. Found strong discriminative validity for the more traditional measures but not for performance assessments. Among individually administered measures, correlations were stronger for individually completed than for cooperatively completed performance assessments. (LPP)

Abstract

The effects of a task-focused goals (TFG) treatment in mathematics were studied with low-achieving students with or without learning disabilities. Results with 40 elementary classrooms showed that TFG students enjoyed the approach, but that increased effort was associated with greater learning only for those without learning disabilities. 128. Ferroptosis, Acyl Starvation, and Breast Cancer

Abstract

To maintain their growth rate, cancer cells must secure a supply of fatty acids, which are necessary for building cell membranes and maintaining energy processes. This is one of the reasons why tissues with intensive fatty acid metabolism, such as the mammary gland, are more likely to develop tumors. One natural or induced defense process against cancer is ferroptosis, which interferes with normal fatty acid metabolism. This leads to the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which causes a rearrangement of the metabolism and damages cell membranes. As a consequence of this oxidation, there is a shortage of normal polyunsaturated fatty acids, which disturbs the complicated metabolism of fatty acids. This imbalance in metabolism, resulting from the deficiency of properly structured fatty acids, is called, by these authors, “acyl starvation.” When cancer cells are exposed to alternating hypoxia and reoxygenation, they often develop resistance to neoadjuvant therapies. Blocking the stearoyl-CoA desaturase – fatty acid–binding protein 4 – fatty acid translocase axis appears to be a promising pathway in the treatment of breast cancer. On the one hand, the inhibition of desaturase leads to the formation of toxic phospholipid hydroperoxides in ferroptosis, whereas on the other hand, the inhibition of fatty acid–binding protein 4 and translocase leads to a reduced uptake of fatty acids and disruption of the cellular transport of fatty acids, resulting in intracellular acyl starvation. The disruption in the metabolism of fatty acids in cancer cells may augment the effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTRegulation of the metabolism of fatty acids in cancer cells seems to be a promising therapeutic direction. Studies show that the induction of ferroptosis in cancer cells, combined with use of neoadjuvant therapies, effectively inhibits the proliferation of these cells. We link the process of ferroptosis with apoptosis and SCD1-FABP4-CD36 axis and propose the term “acyl starvation” for the processes leading to FA deficiency, dysregulation of FA metabolism in cancer cells, and, most importantly, the appearance of incorrect proportions FAs.

150. Influence of musical background on surgical skills acquisition.

Abstract

There is growing interest in identifying trainees with surgical aptitude predictive of eventual technical proficiency. Musical tasks involve complex, cerebral activity, and ambidextrousity, which may have a positive impact on the acquisition of surgical skill sets. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of prior musical experience on the performance of basic surgical skills. This was a prospective cross-sectional study involving 51 novice undergraduate and medical school trainees with no prior surgical exposure. Musicality was assessed with a detailed survey and objectively with the Mini-Profile of Music Perception Skills test. Dexterity was assessed using the Purdue Pegboard test. Surgical skills were then evaluated by performing 2 timed suturing trials after observing tutorial video, followed by a timed laparoscopic peg transfer test. Outcomes included both speed and quality of performance. Participants with prior musical experience performed better than nonmusicians on the Mini-Profile of Music Perception Skills test (P =.015), dominant hand dexterity (P =.05), suture quality (P <.03), and laparoscopic peg transfer speed (P <.01). There was no significant difference in the suturing speed between musicians and nonmusicians. The dexterity and Mini-Profile of Music Perception Skills scores were predictive of suture quality (P <.01). Among musicians, duration of musical training, inactivity, instrument type, and certification levels did not correlate with differences in surgical task performance. Musical background is associated with better performance of fundamental surgical skills among surgical novices, particularly technique quality. Although this does not imply superior ultimate surgical ability, musicality may be a marker for basic surgical skill development useful in identifying suitable candidates for surgical training.
