Background: Community acceptance is an important criterion to assess in community trials, particularly for new tools that require high coverage and use by a target population. Installed on exterior walls of household structures, the attractive targeted sugar bait (ATSB) is a new vector control tool designed to attract and kill mosquitoes. ATSBs were evaluated in Western Zambia during a two-year cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of ATSBs in reducing malaria transmission. Community acceptance of ATSBs was critical for successful trial implementation. Methods: A community engagement strategy outlined activities and key messages to promote acceptance. Annual cross-sectional surveys, conducted during the peak transmission period, assessed households for presence of ATSBs as well as perceived benefits, concerns, and willingness to use ATSBs. Sixteen focus group discussions and 16 in-depth interviews, conducted at the end of each ATSB station deployment period, obtained a range of perceptions and household experiences with ATSB stations, as well as ITN use in the context of ATSB deployment. Results: Methods used during the study to promote acceptance and continued use of ATSBs were effective in achieving greater than 90% coverage, a high (greater than 70%) level of perceived benefits, and fewer than 10% of households reporting safety concerns. Common facilitators of acceptance included the desire for protection against malaria and reduction of mosquitoes, trust in health initiatives, and understanding of the product. Common barriers to acceptance included misconceptions of product impact on mosquitoes, continued cases of malaria, association with satanism, and damage to household structures. Discussion: Future use of the ATSB intervention will likely require activities that foster community acceptance before, during, and after the intervention is introduced. Additional research may be needed to understand the impact of different levels of community engagement on ATSB station coverage, ATSB station perception, and ITN use. Conclusion: There was high acceptance of ATSB stations during the trial in Western Zambia. Continuous and intense community engagement efforts contributed to sustained ATSB coverage and trust in the product. Acceptance of ATSBs during programmatic delivery requires further research. This project evaluates the impact of interior insulation on external walls in three Swedish heritage buildings. Field measurements and hygrothermal simulations were conducted to assess available solutions. Measurements of temperature and relative humidity were taken both indoors and outdoors, as well as on the exterior and interior surfaces of the walls. The accuracy of simulation standards for indoor air temperature and relative humidity was evaluated, and the findings indicate that current simulation standards can serve as reliable alternatives when on-site measurements are not feasible. Validated models were used to analyze the impact of 13 different interior insulation solutions, including vapor-tight and open options, some of which were capillary active. The results highlight that the risk of moisture damage depends on the design of the existing external wall and indicate the importance of hydrophobic treatment in mitigating risks. Thinner amounts of interior insulation can significantly reduce transmission losses without compromising moisture performance. Overall, all the assessed external walls can be safely insulated from the interior, although hydrophobic treatment is recommended for optimal results. This research provides practical insights for decision-making in simulation approaches and optimizing insulation strategies to enhance the performance and durability of external walls in building projects. There have historically been, and still are, problems with water intrusion into new external walls of prefabricated concrete sandwich elements in Sweden to a varying extent. The aim of this study was to obtain documented knowledge and data on driving rain resistance, to provide a basis for improvements and calculations in a common kind of concrete sandwich system with façade components and sealing products. The study included inspections and air pressure difference measurement of façades in the field and driving rain resistance testing of experimental set-ups in a laboratory. Inspection showed that vertical joints between the concrete elements were often significantly too narrow and, at the same time, adhesion loosening of building mastic in these joints was common. TDV-tubes were often incorrectly placed or had a bad incline. Field measurements indicate no pressure equalization, which is also confirmed by lab measurements. Lab results indicated inward leakage at window-wall interface, even without wind pressure, through the TDV-tubes despite a sharp incline, in element joints with a new kind of application of pre-compressed joint sealing tape. The largest leakage flows were of 0.4% of the vertical water flow across a unit width of the façade at the given height. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enclosed airspaces of different dimensions and inclinations that exist in buildings include double-pane windows, curtain walls, skylight devices, and reflective insulation assemblies for walls and roofing systems. Evaluating the energy performance of buildings requires accurate determination of the thermal resistance of enclosed airspaces in different climates. The parameters that affect enclosed airspace thermal resistances include the physical properties of air, the temperatures and emittances of airspace surfaces, airspace dimensions, and heat-flow direction. The Airspace Reflective Tool (ART) was developed for determining the thermal resistances of enclosed airspaces for a wide variety of conditions. In this article, for enclosed airspaces of various orientations and heat flow directions, the ART has been used to conduct a parametric study to quantify the effect on thermal resistance of: effective emittance, operating conditions such as temperature, orientation, dimensions (aspect ratio) and heat flow-direction. The calculated thermal resistances from the ART were compared with those in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals or calculated using ISO-6946 that are currently being used to obtain thermal resistances of enclosed airspaces and show the importance of the factors being considered. Zero-energy building is the main development trend in the current construction field. Reducing the carbon emission of the building, enhancing the indoor comfort of the building, and improving the comprehensive performance of the building are the current research hotspots in the field of construction, and it is necessary to explore the impact of the envelope on the performance of the building as the main medium for the transfer of indoor and outdoor heat in the building. In this paper, zero energy consumption buildings in Northwest China are taken as the study application. Numerical simulation and experimental research are combined to compare and analyze the changes of indoor thermal environment under the conditions of external wall insulation layer thickness of 150 mm, 140 mm, 130 mm and window-wall ratio of 0.36 and 0.5 in the heating season. The results show that the indoor comfort level of 130 mm is lower than that of 140 mm and 150 mm external wall insulation layer thickness, and in winter, the increase of window wall ratio improves indoor thermal comfort. In general, increasing the thickness of external wall insulation layer and window wall ratio can be effective means to improve indoor comfort. However, blindly increasing the thickness of insulation layer and window wall ratio will only cause resource waste and cost increase, affecting the long-term development of zero-energy buildings. Crack detection methods of high-rise building walls based on traditional computer vision (CV) heavily rely on manual selection and extraction of design features. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based CV can actively learn the features of cracks and adapt to complex backgrounds, solving the limitations of traditional crack detection methods. This paper explores faster region-CNN, single shot multibox detector (SSD), You Only Look Once for crack detection, and Mask R-CNN for crack segmentation and proposes a novel automatic crack geometric quantification method by combining CNN-based object detection and segmentation. The contents include (1) crack detection and bounding box extraction, exploring a variety of models, selecting the best model to detect the image taken by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and extracting the crack region; (2) crack segmentation, using the detection results of the first part as input for more accurate detection and segmentation of cracks; and (3) a novel pixel-level geometric quantization method of crack based on Hough straight-line detection, mainly including crack length and width. Then, the pixel level is transformed into the actual geometric quantization to simply determine the crack severity. Simple Summary: The use of single-box housing for domestic horses is a matter of concern due to its potential negative effects on their social interaction and movement. Horses in tropical regions may also face challenges due to heat and humidity fluctuations affecting their thermal comfort and heat dissipation. This study sought to explore the stress responses in horses housed in different stable designs in a tropical savanna region, as little research has considered this topic. The results reveal correlations across stable designs between internal humidity, air temperature, ammonia levels, and heart rate variability (HRV) modulation in horses. We also observed distinct stress responses in horses in different stable designs. These findings suggest that daily changes in the internal environment, as well as stable design, play crucial roles in affecting horses' stress responses and overall well-being in tropical savanna regions. These results have important welfare implications for the management of horse housing in such environments. Single-confinement housing can pose welfare risks to domestic horses. This study investigated horses' stress responses when confined to single stalls in different stable designs in a tropical savanna region to address a gap in the literature. In total, 23 horses were assigned to a stable with a central corridor and solid external walls (A) (N = 8), a stable with one side corridor and solid external walls (B) (N = 6), or a stable with a central corridor and no solid external walls (C) (N = 9). Air velocity, relative humidity, air temperature, and noxious gases were measured inside the stables, and the heart rate and HRV of the horses were also determined. The relative humidity was lower in stable C than in stable A (p < 0.05), while the air temperature was higher in stable C than in stable B (p < 0.05) during the day. The airflow and ammonia levels were higher in stable C than in stables B and A (p < 0.01–0.0001). Overall, horses' HRV in stable A was lower than in those in stables B and C (p < 0.05–0.01). Nowadays, there is a challenge in searching for more sustainable alternatives to decrease the environmental impact of composite materials. In this work, we fabricate new composites based on a biobased-content epoxy system, lignin, and flax fiber; considering these materials could be promising due to their high renewable content of around 40%. In addition, another key requirement for composites, besides being sustainable, is that they present improved properties such as UV resistance. Therefore, throughout this work, priority was given to improving UV resistance in addition to taking into account sustainability. In order to carry out a complete characterization of the materials developed, the mechanical properties, brightness, and thermal, rheological, and fire behavior of these kinds of materials were analyzed by using vacuum-assisted resin infusion processes. By way of conclusion, it should be noted that the manufactured composite with the optimized formulation showed improved UV resistance using lignin and that it could be applied on internal and external walls according to the railway fire regulations. In this paper, a new type of recycled polyurethane material is used as a new type of wall insulation material, and the new building insulation wall made of this paper has high efficiency thermal insulation and energy-saving characteristics and also has certain environmental significance. The thermal conductivity of the new building cold insulation recycled polyurethane material is 0.023 W/(m·K), and the thermal conductivity of the new building insulation wall prepared is 0.297 W/(m·K). Compared with traditional double-sided plastered porous wall tiles, it can save 85.4% of energy consumption per square meter, with higher thermal insulation characteristics and economic benefits. Multi-layered walls are commonly used building elements that have the potential to reduce cooling loads by improving thermal insulation. This paper investigates the potential of reducing cooling load using different types of multi-layered. For this purpose, a model of a small room (1.15 × 1 × 1 m) was constructed. A software code based on the radiant time series method was developed using MATLAB to extract heat gain results. The results were verified with other researchers, and there was a 0.89% error. Overall, the results show that using solid or hollow bricks in construction can be an effective way to reduce heat gain, where Wall-C achieved the minimum heat gain of 60.8 W m−2 compared to 66.207 and 71.225 W m−2 for Wall-A and Wall-B respectively. This investigative study explored the potential of a novel approach called the modular insulated concrete core—advanced and optimized panelized production system (MICADO) method within the realm of modular structures, focusing on its parametric development. By combining frame-supported modular systems with premanufactured panels for exterior walls, the MICADO approach allows for simultaneous installation, and has demonstrated promising prospects. This research investigated the challenges associated with assembling and connecting MICADO structures in the face of seismic and gravity loads. Through rigorous worst-case scenarios, critical load combinations were identified and analyzed. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights into the design of joints in MICADO structures, ensuring their overall structural integrity and stability. The thermal performance of rural building envelopes is mostly non-standardized in Northern China, resulting in significant heat loss. In this study, we take, as an example, the central area of Liaoning province, with the objective of proposing some low-cost and energy-efficient solutions. Through our investigations, we found that heating energy consumption was reduced by 20% and construction costs increased by less than CNY 8000 (USD 1108), which can be accepted by rural residents. In order to achieve this target, the NSGA-II algorithm integrated with Rhino + Grasshopper and EnergyPlus simulation kernel was used to establish a thermal performance optimization model for the heat transfer of rural building envelopes in this severe cold region. Among the above-calculated Pareto optimal solutions, the recommended thickness of insulation layers for room floors, roofs, and external walls was about 70 mm, 50 mm, and 40 mm, respectively. Furthermore, we tried to reduce the window-to-wall ratio as much as possible. Finally, based on both the lower building renovation cost and energy-saving rate, three technical solutions from which rural residents could select, according to their specific needs, are put forward. Zhonghua Gate Castle is on the tentative list for Chinese World Cultural Heritage. Due to long-term sunshine, rain erosion, and man-made damage, its surface appears to have different degrees of cracks and other diseases. This paper centers on Zhonghua Gate Castle; terrestrial laser scanning is used to obtain the exterior wall point cloud data. A crack detection method based on point cloud data curved surface reconstruction is proposed. It involves data preprocessing, crack detection, and the analysis of crack features. This method initially uses data preprocessing techniques to improve data quality. These techniques include removing ground points and super-voxel segmentation. Subsequently, local surface reconstruction was employed to address the issue of missing point cloud data within cracks and the Euclidean clustering algorithm was used for precise crack identification. The article provides a detailed analysis of the geometric characteristics of cracks. They involve the calculation of length, width, and area. The results of the experiment demonstrate that the method could successfully identify cracks and extract geometric features and has millimeter-level accuracy compared to actual crack sizes. The external building walls are significant in mitigating adverse weather conditions. Current research on the thermal insulation of exterior walls often overlooks crucial factors such as human comfort, seasonal changes and environmental dynamics. This study introduced a performance evaluation approach for external walls that considered the human thermal zone, annual air temperature and solar radiation. Taking Nanjing City as a case study, the thermal insulation performance of five distinct types of building exterior walls was investigated. The findings highlight the impact of various insulated wall systems on thermal insulation. While different insulated walls exhibited significant variations in effectiveness during extreme weather episodes, these variations were minor over the course of the year. Analysis revealed a spectrum of performance for insulated exterior walls, ranging from excellent to poor: Outer Insulated Wall > Inside Insulated Wall = Sandwich Insulated Wall = Self-Insulated Wall > Mortar-Insulated Wall. The disparity in thermal insulation performance amongst four wall types was minimal, with the mortar-insulated wall demonstrating the lowest performance. The highest temperature recorded for the mortar-insulated wall surpassed 32.2°C over 68 days. In recent years, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Building Energy Modeling (BEM) has become the primary research focus for reducing the energy consumption of buildings in the planning and operational phases. The combination of BIM and BEM offers advantages for the various phases of a construction project. However, there are currently very few studies that can integrate multi-objective optimization algorithms into the BIM-BEM process to achieve automatic optimization and effectively manage many aspects of building development. In this study, an EnergyPlus integrated multi-objective jellyfish search (EP-MOJSO) system was developed, utilizing an optimization algorithm to find the best thermal insulation layers for an Aluminum composite material (ACM) wall. The goal is to reduce the energy consumption and total cost in a BIM-BEM environment. In the case study, the authors successfully applied the system to a real building, resulting in a 10.7% reduction in total cost and a 65 kWh/m2/year reduction in EUI. It is expected that the results of the study will open up new ways of using algorithms for multi-criteria optimization in BIM models to optimize various project factors such as energy and total cost and thus make an important contribution to sustainable building design. The control paradigm of small vessel pathophysiology has changed to focus on the vascular out‐wall rather than the lumen‐intimal factors. As an emerging controller of the external wall, the microvasculature ("vasa vasorum") provides interactional routes between the in‐and out‐sides of the vascular wall. Despite numerous approaches to developing small‐diameter vascular grafts, engineering artificial vasa vasorum (AVV) has not been projected as a multi‐functional solution to address long‐standing issues such as thrombotic and immune controls for wall regeneration. Here, the AVV is engineered using a microchannel network hydrogel after a multi‐study validation of implantation functions and then used to wrap the external wall of the cell‐free vessel post‐decellularization while preserving its mechanical properties. Upon inter‐positional and bypass grafting to rabbit arteries, the AVV graft facilitates the recruitment of vascular cells into the cell‐free wall by promoting invasion of angiogenic and vasculogenic cells through the microchannel‐mediated M2 polarization of macrophages. This function results in the efficient restoration of smooth muscle cells, and the revitalized vascular elasticity helps to maintain long‐term patency. The AVV, therefore, serves as an effective catalyst for vascular wall regeneration, offering a solution to clinically successful small‐diameter vascular grafting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During heart development, the embryonic ventricle becomes enveloped by the epicardium, which adheres to the outer apical surface of the heart. This is concomitant with onset of ventricular trabeculation, where a subset of cardiomyocytes lose apicobasal polarity and delaminate basally from the ventricular wall. Llgl1 regulates the formation of apical cell junctions and apicobasal polarity, and we investigated its role in ventricular wall maturation. We found that llgl1 mutant zebrafish embryos exhibit aberrant apical extrusion of ventricular cardiomyocytes. While investigating apical cardiomyocyte extrusion, we identified a basal-to-apical shift in laminin deposition from the internal to the external ventricular wall. We find that epicardial cells express several laminin subunits as they adhere to the ventricle, and that the epicardium is required for laminin deposition on the ventricular surface. In llgl1 mutants, timely establishment of the epicardial layer is disrupted due to delayed emergence of epicardial cells, resulting in delayed apical deposition of laminin on the ventricular surface. Together, our analyses reveal an unexpected role for Llgl1 in correct timing of epicardial development, supporting integrity of the ventricular myocardial wall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper contributes to the knowledge of the technical choices involved in the production and use of Guaraní pottery painting in seven archaeological sites of the Paraná Delta and Martín García Island. The technomorphological and stylistic analysis of the pottery and the mineralogical composition of the paints used was carried out with Raman micro-spectrometry. In Guaraní pottery, the internal and/or external walls were painted and motifs were made on vessels known as kambuchí kaguava, kambuchí and ña'ẽmbé. Iron oxides were used in the red, orange and brown colors, in addition to hematite with charcoal for some red tones, magnetite combined with charcoal for black and titanium oxide for white. The painting and the motifs were articulated with the shapes of the vessels, generating a unique ceramic repertoire that refers to a Guarani way of making identifiable in the archaeological record of the sites analyzed here. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce the simple synthesis process of thermal-insulation coating by using three different nanoparticles, namely, nano-zinc oxide (ZnO), nano-tin dioxide (SnO2) and nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2), which can reduce the temperature of solar cells. Design/methodology/approach: The thermal-insulation coating is designed using sol-gel process. The aminopropyltriethoxysilane/methyltrimethoxysilane binder system improves the cross-linking between the hydroxyl groups, -OH of nanoparticles. The isopropyl alcohol is used as a solvent medium. The fabrication method is a dip-coating method. Findings: The prepared S1B1 coating (20 Wt.% of SnO2) exhibits high transparency and great thermal insulation property where the surface temperature of solar cells has been reduced by 13°C under 1,000 W/m2 irradiation after 1 h. Meanwhile, the Z1B2 coating (20 Wt.% of ZnO) reduced the temperature of solar cells by 7°C. On the other hand, the embedded nanoparticles have improved the fill factor of solar cells by 0.2 or 33.33%. Research limitations/implications: Findings provide a significant method for the development of thermal-insulation coating by a simple synthesis process and low-cost materials. Practical implications: The thermal-insulation coating is proposed to prevent exterior heat energy to the inside solar panel glass. At the same time, it can prevent excessive heating on the solar cell's surface, later improves the efficiency of solar cell. Swallows (Hirundo spp.) inhabit a variety of habitats in both tropical and temperate zones. Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica), in particular, frequently roost in large numbers and construct mud nests on buildings, causing nuisance to humans. At the Glami Lemi Biotechnology Research Centre (GLBRC), which is located in Peninsular Malaysia, there are certain structures that are frequently utilised by a large number of swallows for perching and resting. This results in the defacement of the exterior walls caused by their droppings. Hence, the analysis presented in this paper delves into the factors influencing their presence and numbers. The objective of this study was to examine the fluctuations in the number of perched Barn Swallows and their relationship with three environmental parameters: temperature, relative humidity, and light intensity. Three hours of observation were conducted in two different sessions (i.e., morning and afternoon) three times per week for one year. The results showed that the number of Barn Swallows perched appeared to be stable throughout the year, except for November and December, when it increased tremendously and reached its peak. A Spearman rank analysis was conducted to investigate the correlation between the number of swallows perched and the environmental parameters. The analysis was restricted to only periods when the birds were present. A significant effect of relative humidity and temperature was observed for the morning session, promoting the relationship between the environmental parameters and the perching/resting behaviour of this species. This situation is parallel with the afternoon session, where all three environmental parameters showed a significant effect on swallows’ numbers. This study not only provides valuable information to the GLBRC’s management to effectively anticipate appropriate steps to mitigate the influx of Barn Swallows but also enhances our knowledge of the perching/ resting behaviour of this species.
