ABSTRACT Background Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare malignant soft tissue sarcoma (STS), accounting for almost 50% of pediatric STSs. Due to its heterogeneity, RMS presents challenges in diagnosis and treatment, with prognosis varying depending on multiple factors. Tumors localized in the other site (OTH)—including the paraspinal, perianal, thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and perineal regions—are generally classified as unfavorable. This study assesses the clinical features and prognoses of RMS in OTH locations depending on its site of origin. Methods An explorative analysis of RMS cases from the SEER 17 database 2000–2020 was conducted. Patients of all ages with histologically confirmed RMS as primary malignant disease classified under OTH, were included. OTH was categorized in four granular site classifications. Overall survival (OS) and disease‐specific survival (DSS) were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier estimators. Factors independently influencing survival, including a site classification model presented in this study, were identified through Cox regression analysis. Results Out of 4168 patients with RMS, 990 cases of RMS with the OTH site met the inclusion criteria. The median age was 16 years. The predominant histological subtypes were embryonal (33.0%) and alveolar (25.5%). Most tumors were ≥ 5 cm (median 9 cm) and located primarily in the pelvic region (41.5%). The 3‐, 5‐, and 10‐year OS rates were 45.4% ± 3.332 (95% CI), 40.7 ± 3.332, and 38.6% ± 3.332, respectively, while DSS rates were 43.3% ± 3.136 (95% CI), 38.3% ± 3.136, and 35.1% ± 3.332. In the multivariate analysis age, histological type, site in a granular categorization, stage, regional lymph node examination, and regional lymph node involvement (pathologically proven) were independently associated with survival. Through both univariate and multivariate analyses, an OTH favorable group could be established. The OTH favorable group consists of the anal region, gallbladder and biliary tract, and breast. Conclusion RMS in OTH shows significant differences in prognosis, putting the current categorization as unfavorable into question and making a more detailed classification necessary. Furthermore, pathological regional lymph node assessment is specifically in the OTH localization recommended.

Using deep learning techniques, anomalies in the paranasal sinus system can be detected automatically in MRI images and can be further analyzed and classified based on their volume, shape and other parameters like local contrast. However due to limited training data, traditional supervised learning methods often fail to generalize. Existing deep learning methods in paranasal anomaly classification have been used to diagnose at most one anomaly. In our work, we consider three anomalies. Specifically, we employ a 3D CNN to separate maxillary sinus volumes without anomalies from maxillary sinus volumes with anomalies. To learn robust representations from a small labelled dataset, we propose a novel learning paradigm that combines contrastive loss and cross-entropy loss. Particularly, we use a supervised contrastive loss that encourages embeddings of maxillary sinus volumes with and without anomaly to form two distinct clusters while the cross-entropy loss encourages the 3D CNN to maintain its discriminative ability. We report that optimising with both losses is advantageous over optimising with only one loss. We also find that our training strategy leads to label efficiency. With our method, a 3D CNN classifier achieves an AUROC of 0.85 while a 3D CNN classifier optimised with cross-entropy loss achieves an AUROC of 0.66.

Extremely high pressures over a million of atmospheres are required to deform diamonds permanently. Under dynamic high-pressure conditions, even such strong materials lose their strengths so rapidly that the initially pristine lattice transforms into complex dynamics. Here, we report femtosecond x-ray diffraction observations that directly resolve how shock waves deform the crystal lattice in the isotropic nano-polycrystalline form of diamond. The results show that the nano-grain reinforced diamond retains its strength at shock pressures far beyond its elastic limit until it finally approaches zero at 707 GPa, indicating the existence of brittle-ductile transition of nano-polycrystalline diamond under high-strain rate shock compression. The atomic-level deformation process of the diamond observed in this study is a key benchmark for designing high strength materials and simulating their behavior under extreme conditions.

The asymptotic dynamical correlation functions in one-dimensional spin chains are described by power-laws. The corresponding exponents characterize different bulk and boundary critical behavior. We present novel results for the logarithmic contribution to the boundary correlations of an isotropic Heisenberg chain. The exponent of the logarithm, $\lambda=1$, is derived using a renormalization group technique. Strategy iteration is a technique frequently used for two-player games in order to determine the winner or compute payoffs, but to the best of our knowledge no general framework for strategy iteration has been considered. Inspired by previous work on simple stochastic games, we propose a general formalisation of strategy iteration for solving least fixpoint equations over a suitable class of complete lattices, based on MV-chains. We devise algorithms that can be used for non-expansive fixpoint functions represented as so-called min-, respectively, max-decompositions. Correspondingly, we develop two different techniques: strategy iteration from above, which has to solve the problem that iteration might reach a fixpoint that is not the least, and from below, which is algorithmically simpler, but requires a more involved correctness argument. We apply our method to solve energy games and compute behavioural metrics for probabilistic automata.

A non-negligible source of systematic bias in cosmological analyses of galaxy surveys is the on-sky modulation caused by foregrounds and variable image characteristics such as observing conditions. Standard mitigation techniques perform a regression between the observed galaxy density field and sky maps of the potential contaminants. Such maps are ad-hoc, lossy summaries of the heterogeneous sets of co-added exposures that contribute to the survey. We present a methodology to address this limitation, and extract the spurious correlations between the observed distribution of galaxies and arbitrary stacks of single-epoch exposures. We study four types of galaxies (LRGs, ELGs, QSOs, LBGs) in the three regions of the DESI Legacy Surveys (North, South, DES), which results in twelve samples with varying levels and type of contamination. We find that the new technique outperforms the traditional ones in all cases, and is able to remove higher levels of contamination. This paves the way for new methods that extract more information from multi-epoch galaxy survey data and mitigate large-scale biases more effectively., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Abstract A search for the central exclusive production of top quark-antiquark pairs ( t t ¯ $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ ) is performed for the first time using proton-tagged events in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29.4 fb −1. The t t ¯ $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ decay products are reconstructed using the central CMS detector, while forward protons are measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. An observed (expected) upper bound on the production cross section of 0.59 (1.14) pb is set at 95% confidence level, for collisions of protons with fractional momentum losses between 2 and 20%.

Detailed herein are our synthetic studies toward the preparation of the C18- and C19-benzenoid cephalotane-type norditerpenoids. Guided by chemical network analysis, the core structure of this natural product family was constructed in a concise manner using an iterative cross-coupling, followed by a formal inverse-electron-demand [4 + 2] cycloaddition. Initial efforts to functionalize an alkene group in the [4 + 2] cycloadduct using a Mukaiyama hydration and a subsequent olefination led to the complete C18-carbon framework. While effective, this approach proved lengthy and prompted the development of a direct alkene difunctionalization that relies on borocupration to advance the cycloadduct to the natural products. Late-stage peripheral C-H functionalization facilitated access to all of the known cephanolides in 6-10 steps as well as five recently isolated ceforalides in 8-13 steps.

Solid state material at high pressure is prevalent throughout the Universe, and an understanding of the structure of matter under such extreme conditions, gleaned from x-ray diffraction, has been pursued for the best part of a century. The highest pressures that can be reached to date (2 TPa) in combination with x-ray diffraction diagnosis have been achieved by dynamic compression via laser ablation . The past decade has witnessed remarkable advances in x-ray technologies, with novel x-ray Free-Electron-Lasers (FELs) affording the capacity to produce high quality single-shot diffraction data on time scales below 100 fsec. We provide a brief history of the field of dynamic compression, spanning from when the x-ray sources were almost always laser-plasma based, to the current state-of-the art diffraction capabilities provided by FELs. We give an overview of the physics of dynamic compression, diagnostic techniques, and the importance of understanding how the rate of compression influences the final temperatures reached. We provide illustrative examples of experiments performed on FEL facilities that are starting to give insight into how materials deform at ultra-high strain rates, their phase diagrams, and the types of states that can be reached. We emphasize that there often appear to be differences in the crystalline phases observed between use of static and dynamic compression techniques. We give our perspective on both the current state of this rapidly evolving field, and some glimpses of how we see it developing in the near-to-medium term., Comment: 40 pages, 18 figures. Combining an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) with high power laser drivers enables the study of phase transitions, equation-of-state, grain growth, strength, and transformation pathways as a function of pressure to 100s GPa along different thermodynamic compression paths. Future high-repetition rate laser operation will enable data to be accumulated at >1 Hz which poses a number of experimental challenges including the need to rapidly replenish the target. Here, we present a combined shock-compression and X-ray diffraction study on vol% epoxy(50)-crystalline grains(50) (slurry) targets, which can be fashioned into extruded ribbons for high repetition-rate operation. For shock-loaded NaCl-slurry samples, we observe pressure, density and temperature states within the embedded NaCl grains consistent with observations for shock-compressed single-crystal NaCl., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures
