Abstract

‘Cute cat videos’ are often vilified for representing everything journalism is not and should not be. However, news about cats – cute and otherwise – has been fodder for The New York Times for more than 140 years. This article critically examines the Times’ cat tales in the context of the cultural history of journalism and the academic study of human–animal relations, also known as anthrozoology. Trends and themes in the coverage indicate that cats have been used and portrayed as commodities, heroes, villains, victims, women’s best friends, and urban symbols. The stories demonstrate how and why animal news should be taken seriously by journalism scholars. Not only does it offer insight into our evolving relationships with animals, it also provides a provocative means of thinking about where journalism has been and where it is heading. 135. Radio Utopia: Promoting Public Interest in a 1940s Radio Documentary.

Abstract

Historical studies can be powerful means for enhancing critical understanding of journalism. This study examines an acclaimed 1947 American radio documentary as an example of utopian journalism aligning with the interests of powerful individuals and institutions. CBS's The Eagle's Brood, written by Robert Lewis Shayon, advocated the grassroots-organizing philosophy of Saul Alinsky as a solution to juvenile delinquency. If in that way the documentary aimed at promoting the public interest, CBS also used radio research to promote and gauge interest in the documentary itself. Finally, the program promoted the image of CBS as serving the public interest at a time when the broadcasting industry faced increased regulatory scrutiny. CBS largely abandoned its radio documentaries soon afterward and Shayon was blacklisted. Still, The Eagle's Brood provides a historical example of corporate media granting airtime to an alternative journalistic form and presenting an altruistic view of Americans confronting and solving their problems. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

137. Abstract TMP47: IMPROVING Time To Anti-Coagulation Reversal For Hemorrhagic Strokes

Abstract

Background:Oral anticoagulation (OAC) is a risk factor for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) which is an important source of disability and mortality. OAC-associated ICH (OAC-ICH) patients have worse outcomes as compared to ICH patients not on OAC, likely because of the associated larger stroke volumes, higher propensity to intraventricular hemorrhage, and a higher risk of rebleeding. Although current guidelines recommend that OAC should be reversed as quickly as possible, many health care systems have not developed a process for optimizing that aspect of care.Methods:Through the IMPROVE Stroke Care Consortium, a group of nine Hub hospitals and their regional community hospitals, a systems of care improvement project was implemented. Performance reviews identified best practices which were disseminated throughout all centers. We compared the median door-to-reversal (DTR) time before and after an institutional campaign to speed the process with a target time of 60 minutes.Results:Over two years of the study, there were 6,699 ischemic strokes, 152 subarachnoid hemorrhages, and 889 intracranial hemorrhages. During that time, 36 hemorrhagic stroke patients received reversal agents emergently. The baseline median DTR time was 123 minutes (IQR 99, 361 minutes) for all comers. By the end of the program, the median DTR time had been reduced to 92.5 minutes (IQR 59, 163 minutes) which is a trend towards 59% reduction of DTR from baseline (p=0.08).Conclusions:Utilizing an integrated stroke systems of care approach we were able to reduce DTR times for patients presenting with acute ICH and concurrent use of anticoagulants in spite of the lack of definitive guidelines as to how quickly reversing agents should be given.

Abstract

This is a story about a myth in American culture, the myth of the journalist as romantic hero. Reviewers praised the theatrical "The Front Page," for being the first play to present something approaching a realistic portrait of journalism. One noted that the play was the most vivid and in certain aspects the truest of newspaper plays. Another praised the play's invention and its avoidance of slipping into old-time melodrama. Others, though, took pains to note that the play presented an exaggerated view of journalism. One recounted the plot and then commented such stuff is pure romance, of course is Ben Hecht's and Charles MacArthur's romance of journalism as they would like to remember it a sort of memory of youth. Produced two years apart, and directed by the same man Frank Capra these two films are strikingly similar in their plots. Each film is the story of a romance between a cynical reporter and a millionaire trying to escape the burdens brought on by excessive wealth. One of the key differences between the films is that the genders of the reporter and the millionaire are switched.
