Abstract Background Dietary rice bran consists of many bioactive components with disease fighting properties; including the capacity to modulate the gut microbiota. Studies point to the important roles of the gut microbiota and the mucosal epithelium in the establishment of protection against enteric pathogens, such as Salmonella. The ability of rice bran to reduce the susceptibility of mice to a Salmonella infection has not been previously investigated. Therefore, we hypothesized that the incorporation of rice bran into the diet would inhibit the colonization of Salmonella in mice through the induction of protective mucosal responses. Results Mice were fed diets containing 0%, 10% and 20% rice bran for one week prior to being orally infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. We found that mice consuming the 10 and 20% rice bran diets exhibited a reduction in Salmonella fecal shedding for up to nine days post-infection as compared to control diet fed animals (p Lactobacillus spp. in rice bran fed mice (p Salmonella entry into mouse small intestinal epithelial cells. Conclusions Increasing rice bran consumption represents a novel dietary means for reducing susceptibility to enteric infection with Salmonella and potentially via induction of native Lactobacillus spp.

Abstract Background Leptospirosis, a zoonosis caused by Leptospira spp., is recognized as an emergent infectious disease. Due to the lack of adequate diagnostic tools, vaccines are an attractive intervention strategy. Recombinant proteins produced in Escherichia coli have demonstrated promising results, albeit with variable efficacy. Pichia pastoris is an alternative host with several advantages for the production of recombinant proteins. Results The vaccine candidates LigANI and LipL32 were cloned and expressed in P. pastoris as secreted proteins. Large-scale expression resulted in a yield of 276 mg/L for LigANI and 285 mg/L for LipL32. The recombinant proteins were glycosylated and were recognized by antibodies present in the sera of patients with severe leptospirosis. Conclusions The expression of LigANI and LipL32 in P. pastoris resulted in a significant increase in yield compared to expression in E. coli. In addition, the proteins were secreted, allowing for easy purification, and retained the antigenic characteristics of the native proteins, demonstrating their potential application as subunit vaccine candidates.

Climate‐driven changes to environmental conditions are driving severe declines of coral reef ecosystems. Current climate vulnerability estimates commonly focus on ocean warming and typically overlook ecological responses or use broad proxies to represent responses, leading to management decisions based on incomplete views of coral reef futures. We explore four underdeveloped aspects of climate vulnerability assessments and make the following recommendations: (1) use climate projections based on changes in global warming as future scenarios in place of the more common emissions scenarios; (2) include available high‐resolution projections for climate variables in addition to thermal stress; (3) combine projected climate stressors accounting for uncertainty in future outcomes; and (4) quantitatively assess historical and project future ecological sensitivity and adaptive capacity of corals to multiple stressors. We demonstrate how this framework can be used to reduce uncertainty in projected climate vulnerability and facilitate targeted investment in managing reefs most likely to endure climatic disturbances. Since the Middle Ages advances in manufacture and chemical processes have improved standards of window glass production. This can be identified through decreasing levels of visible imperfections in window glass made ostensibly, prior to the 1950s. The importance of retaining historic window glass cannot be understated with the inherently imbued cultural, aesthetic and historical value. Windows are the element of historic buildings most at risk from replacement by newer equivalents. In order to quantify the extent to which historic windows are replaced, we rely on data published by local authorities. However, this data can be difficult to access and analyse due to the disparate and complex nature of local authority websites. Here we introduce a bespoke computer programme, written and developed specifically to extract planning data with its disparate and multifaceted parameters. The programme enables trends in window replacement over time to be discerned. Within local authorities, both general planning and listed building applications related to windows have a high approval rate. Listing appears not to offer significant protection for windows. Despite the promotional efforts of national and international heritage organisations in favour of repairing and upgrading existing windows, in practice, these appear to have little effect at local level. Four pursuit-tracking experiments were conducted in an attempt to replicate with adults, Hockey's findings that loud noise increases attentional selectivity. To determine the prevalence of compassion satisfaction, related factors, and predictors among healthcare professionals in Thai intensive care units. A cross–sectional study was conducted in 12 intensive care units at a university hospital in Thailand from August to November 2022. All nurses and doctors were invited to complete an anonymous online survey which included: the Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Passion Scale, Flourishing Scale, and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regressions were used for data analysis in SPSS 28.0. A total of 178 nurses and doctors participated (92.13% nurses, 89.89% female, mean 32.10 years). Average compassion satisfaction (assessed using the Professional Quality of Life Scale) was moderate, with a mean score of 37.94 (SD = 5.58). The final regression model predicting compassion satisfaction was significant and explained 65% of the variance in compassion satisfaction, F (11, 154) = 26.00, p < 0.001. Four out of 11 predictor variables made unique statistically significant contributions to the final model: resilience (β = 0.48, p < 0.001), harmonious passion (β = 0.24, p < 0.001), being a nurse (not a doctor; β = 0.17, p < 0.05), and holding a postgraduate qualification (β = 0.10, p < 0.05). Most healthcare professionals in critical care units have a moderate level of compassion satisfaction, which is correlated with resilience, flourishing, and harmonious passion. Resilience and harmonious passion predict compassion satisfaction. These factors are modifiable through intervention. Assessment of staff psychological well-being can identify those at risk for stress and impaired professional quality of life. Resilience and harmonious passion predict compassion satisfaction and can be modified through psychological interventions to promote psychological well-being and professional quality of life in healthcare workers in intensive care units. INTRODUCTION: The Federal Aviation Administration Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) is required by law to identify pilots who have driving under the influence (DUI) convictions. It is the responsibility of AAM to determine, based on the DUI, if the pilot has a drinking problem and needs follow-up treatment. Pilots with alcohol problems are at risk to themselves and the public and need to have treatment to reduce the extent of the risk. It has been suggested by some that a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.15 g · dL-1 is evidence of tolerance and the pilot should be placed in an alcohol treatment program. METHOD: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Clinician's Guide considers a person at risk for a drinking problem when a man drinks 5 or more drinks or a woman drinks 4 or more drinks in a day and reaches a 0.08 g · dL-1 of ethanol in the blood. It is possible to estimate from a BAC or breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) the number of drinks consumed using the volume of distribution for ethanol and the weight of the individual. A spread sheet tool was developed to estimate the number of drinks consumed. RESULTS: It was determined that DUI/DWI concentrations could be used to determine the minimum number of drinks consumed. Overweight people reach binge drinking levels and higher Hingson levels at lower DUI/DWI concentrations than people with an average weight or lower. Abstract The aim of this study was to compare fecal microbiome, plasma, fecal and urine metabolomes, and serum biochemistry of adult companion dogs according to body condition scores. Blood, serum/plasma, urine, and fecal samples were collected from 66 clinically healthy, adult companion dogs of either normal weight (NW), overweight (OW), or obese dogs (OB). analyses included fecal microbiome analyses via 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon; sequencing, nontargeted plasma, fecal, and urine metabolomics using liquid chromatography/gas chromatography-mass; spectrometry, and serum biochemistry for each dog. Few significant differences in serum biochemistry and fecal microbiome Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) were found between weight groups and there was high OTU variation between individual dogs. NW dogs had higher relative abundance of the genus Eubacterium (log-fold change 4.3, adjusted P value =.003) and lower relative abundance of the family Bifidobacteriaceae (log-fold change −3.6, adjusted P value =.02) compared to OB dogs. The microbiome of NW dogs had higher OTU richness compared with OB dogs. Metabolome analysis showed 185 plasma, 37 fecal, and 45 urine metabolites that significantly differed between NW and OW or OB dogs. There were notable significant differences in relative abundance of several plasma phospholipid moieties and fecal volatile fatty acids between weight phenotypes. The combinations of host and gut microbiota and metabolic shifts suggest a pattern that could help detection of early metabolic changes in overweight dogs before the development of obesity related disease. The results of this study support the need for continued investigation into sensitive measures of metabolic aberrancies in overweight dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
