The Foundation Supernova Survey aims to provide a large, high-fidelity, homogeneous, and precisely calibrated low-redshift Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) sample for cosmology. The calibration of the current low-redshift SN sample is the largest component of systematic uncertainties for SN cosmology, and new data are necessary to make progress. We present the motivation, survey design, observation strategy, implementation, and first results for the Foundation Supernova Survey. We are using the Pan-STARRS telescope to obtain photometry for up to 800 SNe Ia at z≲0.1. This strategy has several unique advantages: (1) the Pan-STARRS system is a superbly calibrated telescopic system, (2) Pan-STARRS has observed 3/4 of the sky in grizyP1 making future template observations unnecessary, (3) we have a well-tested data-reduction pipeline, and (4) we have observed ∼3000 high-redshift SNe Ia on this system. Here, we present our initial sample of 225 SN Ia grizP1 light curves, of which 180 pass all criteria for inclusion in a cosmological sample. The Foundation Supernova Survey already contains more cosmologically useful SNe Ia than all other published low-redshift SN Ia samples combined. We expect that the systematic uncertainties for the Foundation Supernova Sample will be two to three times smaller than other low-redshift samples.We find that our cosmologically useful sample has an intrinsic scatter of 0.111 mag, smaller than other low-redshift samples. We perform detailed simulations showing that simply replacing the current low-redshift SN Ia sample with an equally sized Foundation sample will improve the precision on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter by 35 per cent, and the dark energy figure of merit by 72 per cent. SN 2014J in M 82 is the closest Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in decades. The proximity allows for detailed studies of supernova physics and provides insights into the circumstellar and interstellar environment. In this work, we analyse Spitzer mid-infrared (mid-IR) data of SN 2014J in the 3.6 and 4.5 μm wavelength range, together with several other nearby and well-studied SNe Ia. We compile the first composite mid-IR light-curve templates from our sample of SNe Ia, spanning the range from before peak brightness well into the nebular phase. Our observations indicate that SNe Ia form a very homogeneous class of objects at these wavelengths. Using the low-reddening supernovae for comparison, we constrain possible thermal emission from circumstellar dust around the highly reddened SN 2014J. We also study SNe 2006X and 2007le, where the presence of matter in the circumstellar environment has been suggested. No significant mid-IR excess is detected, allowing us to place upper limits on the amount of pre-existing dust in the circumstellar environment. For SN 2014J, Mdust ≲ 10-5 M☉ within rdust ~ 1017 cm, which is insufficient to account for the observed extinction. Similar limits are obtained for SNe 2006X and 2007le. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bis(tripyrrolyl) cryptands are prepared via a [2 + 3] Schiff base condensation of formyltripyrrolyls with diamines; an ethyl-spaced hexapyrrole cryptand is shown to bind strongly ethane-1,2-diamine and ethane-1,2-diol in chloroform solution.

The complex Co4 1(2)8- is a tetranuclear cobalt(II) cage compound that assembles in aqueous solutions above pH 4 and is capable of encapsulating a variety of organic guest molecules, for example, benzene, hexane, chlorobutane, butanol, and ethyl acetate. Ligand 1 is a resorc[4]arene-based molecule with iminodiacetate moieties appended to its upper rim. 1H NMR studies of Co4 1(2)8-.guest complexes demonstrate inclusion of nonpolar hydrocarbons, substituted phenyls, alcohols, halogen-containing hydrocarbons, and polar organic molecules. The complex Co4 1(2)8- acts as an NMR shift reagent and causes substantial upfield isotropic hydrogen shifts (-30 to -40 ppm) in the guest molecule and separation of the guest hydrogen chemical shifts by typically 12 ppm. The complex Co4 1(2)8- will encapsulate molecules with fewer than eight atoms in a linear chain, mono- and disubstituted benzenes, and polar molecules with greater than two carbon atoms. The solid-state structure of Ba4[Co4 1(2).C6H5C2H5] shows a disordered guest molecule encapsulated within the cavity of Co4 1(2)8-. The cavity dimensions, bond lengths, and bond angles of Ba4[Co4 1(2).C6H5C2H5] are very similar to those determined in Ba4[Co4 1(2).6H2O].

New Zealand white rabbits were divided into 4 groups for the study of the etiology of corticosteroid-induced osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis). Group A and B received intramuscular injections of methylprednisolone acetate and methylprednisolone succinate respectively. Group C, on semirestricted diets, and Group D, on ad libitum diets, were controls. Osteocyte death, necrotic debris and intravascular fat emboli were evident in sections of proximal and distal femur by the 2nd week in experimental animals. Blood analysis revealed elevated lipid and prostaglandin levels. Osteoporosis was first observed at 6 weeks. Evidence of advanced osteonecrosis was present histologically at 18 weeks. It is concluded that osteonecrosis probably develops as the result of the interaction of several corticosteroid-induced alterations, including circulating fat emboli and inflammatory unbound free fatty acids or prostaglandins. Osteoporosis may also be a factor in explaining the sporadic nature of the disorder.
