Abstract

The primary electron donor environment in the histidineM200 to leucine and histidineL173 to leucine heterodimer mutants of Rhodobacter capsulatus were analyzed by light-induced Fourier transform infrared difference spectroscopy to determine how the bacteriochlorophyll-protein interactions are selectively agitated in the heterodimer mutants. The prominent difference between the R. capsulatus wild type and heterodimer mutants was in the 1600 to 1200 per cm spectra region suggesting that differences in the conformation and or protein local environment of the two bacteriophylls in the mutants and the wild type.

Abstract

Cultivating a more dynamic relationship between science and policy is essential for responding to complex social challenges such as sustainability. One approach to doing so is to “span the boundaries” between science and decision making and create a more comprehensive and inclusive knowledge exchange process. The exact definition and role of boundary spanning, however, can be nebulous. Indeed, boundary spanning often gets conflated and confused with other approaches to connecting science and policy, such as science communication, applied science, and advocacy, which can hinder progress in the field of boundary spanning. To help overcome this, in this perspective, we present the outcomes from a recent workshop of boundary-spanning practitioners gathered to (1) articulate a definition of what it means to work at this interface (“boundary spanning”) and the types of activities it encompasses; (2) present a value proposition of these efforts to build better relationships between science and policy; and (3) identify opportunities to more effectively mainstream boundary-spanning activities. Drawing on our collective experiences, we suggest that boundary spanning has the potential to increase the efficiency by which useful research is produced, foster the capacity to absorb new evidence and perspectives into sustainability decision-making, enhance research relevance for societal challenges, and open new policy windows. We provide examples from our work that illustrate this potential. By offering these propositions for the value of boundary spanning, we hope to encourage a more robust discussion of how to achieve evidence-informed decision-making for sustainability.

The aim of this study was to examine the perspectives and experiences of individuals with CML and to understand their challenges communicating with their CML physician.Patients and Methods: An online survey in adults with CML (n=100) in the US and Canada assessed QoL, patient-provider relationships, treatment satisfaction, and understanding of CML and treatment goals via the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Cancer Therapy Satisfaction Questionnaire and de novo survey questions. Participants were recruited via an external patient recruiter and CML Patient Groups.Results: Many participants reported hardships due to CML and its treatment. The main impacts were on the ability to work (21%), engage in personal activities (e.g., hobbies, 28%), and to enjoy sexual relations (median=2.00, IQR=8.50). A substantial proportion (21– 39%) wished to discuss additional topics with their providers (e.g., management of CML and/or its impacts). While participants reported satisfaction with therapy overall (median=85.71, IQR=17.86), they indicated low to moderate treatment satisfaction with specific components, including concerns regarding side effects (median=43.75, IQR=43.75). Participants generally had a good understanding of CML (97%) and its treatment goals (92%).Conclusion: These findings advance our understanding of issues that need improvement to support QoL for individuals living with CML. Abstract

The results of ion depolarization experiments for SiO[sub 2] insulating layers on Si under isothermal and thermostimulated conditions have been analyzed. Additionally, the ion currents under the continuous change of gate voltage (dynamic current-voltage characteristics) have been investigated. It is shown that, depending on the type of experiment, an insulating layer shows itself either as an ion trap system with the wide distribution of lifetimes (energies of trap activation are distributed in an interval of 0.75-1.5 eV), or as a medium with free ions, which have a mobility μ (423 K)=2.7x10[sup -8] cm[sup 2]/V s and an activation energy of mobility E[sub μ]=0.80±0.05 eV. These values correspond to those found for Na[sup +] ions. The model resolving this apparent contradiction has been offered. Each ion and isolator matrix surrounding it are expected to generate a localized electronic state, but ion+electron neutral associates (NAs) are formed by filling these states owing to electron tunnel transitions from the semiconductor. NAs play the role of ion traps. The wide distribution of ion lifetimes on such traps is connected with spread of an electron tunnel length at the associate decay. The increase of NA ionization degree at the quasistationary electrical field change provides a smooth transition from a set of a few mobile NAs to an ensemble of free ions. The theory developed on the basis of model given and taking into account both NAs diffusion and their formation and decay processes allows the experimental data to be described qualitatively and quantitatively. Undamped circulation of particles in an oxide layer of a metal-oxide-semiconductor system under a stationary polarization electrical field is predicted and found: NAs formed as a result of ion neutralization at the semiconductor surface diffuse into the insulator volume, where they decay thermally to ions and electrons; the latter leave for a gate almost instantly compared to ion tran...
