Abstract

This essay explores the implications of a Supreme Court dissent written by US Chief Justice John Roberts in the style of film noir. The article analyses Roberts's adaptation, discussing more broadly the use of classic literary types such as the hardboiled detective and the western cowboy in social and political discourse. The article argues for the significance of adaptation studies in our polarized contemporary society because its valuing of change counters formulaic appropriations of the past and fixed ideas and models of experience. The essay suggests not only that political leaders mired in the past cannot adapt to changing society and social roles, but also that adaptation studies hones readers' discernment, especially called for when public figures use fictional patterns to address real-world circumstances. 122. A diagnosis reconsidered: the symptomatic gallbladder remnant.

Abstract

Background: Patients can present with symptomatic gallbladder disease after cholecystectomy due to a remnant gallbladder. This is a rare problem and challenging diagnosis with limited prior characterization; thus, we present a large series of patients with a gallbladder remnant. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of all patients presenting with symptomatic gallbladder remnant at a tertiary care center from 2002 to 2016. Data on presenting symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatments, and follow‐up were collected. Results: Thirty‐one patients diagnosed and treated for a symptomatic gallbladder remnant were identified. The most common presenting symptoms included right upper quadrant pain (87%) and nausea (55%). The median time from symptom presentation to definitive diagnosis was 60 days. Diagnostic modalities utilized in the evaluation of these patients demonstrated that endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography were effective with sensitivities of 85% and 90%, respectively. Twenty‐three (76.2%) patients underwent completion cholecystectomy, which proved to be definitive treatment. Additionally, eight (25.8%) patients were non‐operative candidates and underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and sphincterotomy, three of whom developed recurrent symptoms. Conclusion: A symptomatic gallbladder remnant after cholecystectomy is infrequently seen; however, the diagnosis should be considered in patients with recurrent biliary symptoms after cholecystectomy. Completion cholecystectomy can be challenging but is highly effective for definitive treatment. Abstract

Parental involvement in children's education is of critical importance in the U.S. educational system. Therefore, it is useful to identify effective predictors of parental involvement. The present study used multi-level analyses to examine how individual and school-level characteristics impact two forms of parental involvement (school-based and home-based parental involvement) in first grade and eighth grade. Several child/parent level characteristics significantly predicted parental involvement. Parent interaction/social capital demonstrated medium to large effects across both forms of parental involvement in both first and eighth grades. Many of the other child/parent level characteristics produced small effect sizes. Across both forms of parental involvement there were few school-level effects that were statistically significant. Those that were statistically significant were very small in magnitude. The results of the present study may serve to inform school practices and research in the field of parental involvement.

She considers the idea that adaptation as a socialization process could be a counter to the phenomenology of immersion.

Abstract

Universities and colleges across the United States are making innovative strides in higher education programming to catalyze a more sustainable era of agriculture. This is clearly exemplified through the formation of community-university partnerships as critical illustrations of civic engagement (CE) for sustainable agriculture (SA) education. This paper explores the praxis of CE for SA education by focusing on the ways in which five land-grant universities (LGUs) with undergraduate programs in SA have developed and put into practice community-university partnerships. Drawing upon these programs and supportive literature, this article specifically attempts to describe the role and significance of CE for SA education, emerging community-university partnership models and their implications for prompting food and agriculture sustainability, and student learning and program assessment outcomes. We also reveal the many challenges and opportunities encountered by stakeholders involved in the creation and continuation of these programs and their subsequent coursework. Conclusions offer "real world" recommendations for other faculty, staff, student, and community stakeholders to implement and generate action-oriented scholarship for and with communities as a viable thread of SA education.

Abstract

The main focus of this study was the relationships between school urbanicity (size of community in which the school is located) and fifth-grade students’ academic self-concepts. Using multi-level modeling methodology (HLM) we were able to investigate “school effects”, net of individual students’ characteristics. School urbanicity had no effect on reading, math, or general academic self-concept. School-level effects were found consistently for aggregate school achievement in reading and math, congruent with Marsh’s Big-Fish-Little-Pond effect. Less consistent school-level effects were found for proportion of minority students and school-average SES. Individual level effects mirrored those reported in other literature with tested achievement having the greatest effect

141. Validation of Teacher Reading Ratings with Direct Measures of Reading

Abstract

Recent legislation has mandated that students are proficient in reading. Thus, efficient methods of assessment are essential at the present time. Although direct assessments of reading have been shown to be valid in depicting students' skills, they are not efficient methods. It would be cost and time efficient if there were a valid teacher rating instrument. The present study assessed the concurrent and predictive validity of first and fourth grade teacher ratings on Ratings of Overall Reading and Ratings of Reading Problems when compared with several direct measures of reading. Teachers' ratings on Ratings of Overall Reading produced higher validity coefficients than their ratings of the Ratings of Reading Problems. Given that this measure demonstrated the concurrent and predictive validity of teachers' ratings in both first and fourth grades, it is hoped that it can begin to be incorporated into screenings for identifying students experiencing reading difficulties.
