HISTORY of publishing ,LITERARY form ,EIGHTEENTH century ,POETICS ,ENLIGHTENMENT ,TRANSLATORS - Abstract
The article discusses the functions and frequency of the use of various forms of subtitles in editions of Polish translations of the Enlightenment period. The results of research reveal the following regularities: firstly, regardless of the type of the text, there are recurrent patterns of presentation of translation, in a variety of ways referring to the (real or not) publishing history of the translated works. Secondly, the identity of the original author is concealed while the status of the text as translation is erased most often in the case of short literary forms (e.g. lyrics, concise epic texts) and works which were perceived as "low" in the light of classicistic poetics (e.g. novels). Thirdly, apart from the information provided on the title pages, 18th century publishers employed other elements of the book in order to point out the authorship of the original texts or to mark the status of the work as translation in a more prominent way (e.g. introductions, footnotes, bilingual editions, inclusion of several translation of the same original text, "revealing" the individual traits of the translators). A collaborative, interdisciplinary study (English, history) of the authors, subjects, contents, and substance of a key early collection of criticism of women novelists, tied to the Queen's 1897 Jubilee. Famous or obscure women novelists assess the work of deceased peers, censuring most those who are now canonical. Attending to the style and orientation of particular chapters and some research in publishing history, we suggest varied textual and quantitative approaches, drawing on our database of 1,272 collective biographies of women to explore what we can discover from one book carefully contextualized, instead of distant reading in a much larger corpus. HISTORIOGRAPHY , *SOCIOLOGY , *NATIONAL interest , *HISTORY of publishing ,AUSTRALIAN history ,DEVELOPING countries - Abstract
There has been a renewal of interest in the writing of national histories of sociology, with dozens of histories recently published in both the global North and South. Despite this, there has been a dearth of discussion about the methods and methodologies appropriate to such a task. Indeed, few histories of sociology, and fewer still national histories of sociology, explicitly address methodology. In this study, we review the literature on histories of sociology from a variety of countries, focusing on how the authors have approached the writing of history, and their implicit use of methods and methodologies. We suggest the use of a content analysis as an additional, though perhaps unusual, method of historiography, and apply this in the case of an Australian history of sociology. Our content analysis reveals both similarities and differences in the Australian approach, indicating the impact of settler-colonialism on Australian sociology and its historiography. This qualitative arts-based research aims to provide evidence on the viability of "Narradrama as a Three-Act Play" (NTAP), a group process focusing on the effectiveness of selected interventions as well as on the strength and wisdom gained by participants. NTAP combines narrative therapy and drama therapy as participants explore, develop, and reflect upon preferred roles through a series of exercises in externalization, definitional ceremonies, and witnessing practices. This article builds on earlier research on NTAP with a mostly indigenous group. Lessons learned from the earlier published oral history study were incorporated and applied to the present process of working with a multicultural group of six women aged 32 to 64 years, enrolled in a 7-week workshop. All participants completed the process and the assessment on the viability of NTAP in gaining new insights, wisdom, and strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the Sangomar oil field, which is located on the offshore boundary between Senegal and The Gambia. The field was discovered in 2014 and has since been developed by various companies. The article raises questions about the credibility of the field's boundaries and the potential for oil exploration in The Gambia. It also highlights the lack of transparency in the data and decision-making process of the companies involved. The author suggests that proper unitization and fair distribution of resources between countries is important. [Extracted from the article]

= This article, developed within the framework of the FILO: CyT (UBA) programming, attempts to generate discussion on the theoretical-methodological foundation of its own object of study. In researching Between what was edited and what was read in the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, a number of topics are addressed to reflect on the History of Publishing, the History of Graphic Design and the History of Reading in the same faculty during the period 1896-2019. In this context, the following topics are developed for future discussion, articulated by the History of Written Culture: the construction of an indispensable theory to carry out the project, the variety and diversity of the existing documentary sources in the faculty, and the methodology appropriate for this problem, among other aspects. Finally, it is pointed out the need to search for a conceptual configuration in order to compare it, discuss it and adapt it to other universities in Argentina interested in these cultural studies, highlighting the importance of establishing similar conceptual models to analyze the History of Publishing, Graphic Design and Reading in the university sphere, in academic settings.

Genealogy studies are growing in popularity, and researchers are increasingly using visualization methods to summarize and communicate their findings. A family tree is a visual representation of family members and their relationships that is commonly used to support the research of a family's history and publish the results. In some cases, an ancestor may occur in more than one place in the lineage of an individual, which is one of the reasons for the occurrence of consanguineous marriages, that is, marriages between blood relative spouses. Current methods for family tree visualization were not designed to analyze and assess the level of consanguinity in the ancestry of individuals. This paper proposes VisAC, an interactive tool to support the visual analysis of consanguinity in individuals' ancestry. The inbreeding coefficient is used as a measure of consanguinity. The coefficient corresponds to an estimate of the probability that two alleles (a variant of a given gene) in the DNA were inherited from the same individual. A visualization design and an interactive tool were developed with genealogists' support. In addition, the feedback collected through a questionnaire about two demo videos and tests with three target users strongly supports the effectiveness of the family tree visual representation and the adequacy of the interactive tool for the exploratory analysis task. Real-world examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of the visualization design, and an example of exploratory analysis is presented to illustrate the use of the interactive tool. In summary, this work formulates the task of visual analysis of consanguinity in ancestors' trees and proposes VisAC, a new visualization tool to support the task. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the basis of cover art and advertising development at the beginning of the twentieth century, at a key time of periodics publishing History in Argentina (in terms of the offer of growth and diversification), this work analyzes the uses of writer's portrait in Los Pensadores between 1922 and 1924, the booklet with which Antonio Zamora (1896-1976) launched Claridad publishing house. On one hand, the analysis of this peri odics covers, as well as other composition decisions, allows to compare the strategies of both periodical press and cheap book publishers in the 1920 publishing field. On the other hand, different material features such as the choice of images or graphical and editorial decisions lead to give an account of their taking part in the process of author's figure fixing on the book artefact. By this way, they also give empiricity to author's function, under media regime and in the context of mass culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinua Achebe's influence on the development and institution of African literature has proved to be pertinent, critical, and indelible. This paper reflects on the history of translating and publishing this renowned Nigerian writer's major novels and essays in France. It identifies two French publishers, Présence Africaine and Actes Sud, as the most important agents in the translation and publication of Achebe's works. By conducting interviews with Achebe's French editor and translator as well as reviewing published work by scholars and one of Achebe's translators, this study examines the trajectory of Achebe's works in France and how the ideologies of the agents may have affected which/when works were chosen for translation and publication. This study demonstrates that Achebe's trajectory in French has been eclectic and largely controlled by both publishers' worldviews and politics as well as broader discourses in African literature, such as literary legitimisation and colonialism. With the continued proliferation of digitized materials, critical attention to the ideologies informing the creation of digital archives remains crucial. How are digital archives made and what are their goals? How do different participants in the process work together in collaborative teams towards shared ideals? This paper outlines the methodological and political considerations that underlie the creation of a critical digital archive of historical and born-digital materials relating to 20th-century publishing history, The Modernist Archives Publishing Project (MAPP). Here we outline the archival practices and critical ethos that have informed the collaborative creation of MAPP by an international team of scholars, archivists, cultural institutions, students, and copyright estate holders. We address issues of selection that arise in creating a critical digital archive; feminist critical metadata practices; and our approaches to workflow and copyright; and conclude with an example of an archival document type in which the issues of feminist critical curation and copyright collide. • In this longitudinal study, scientists comprising the classes of top performers are tracked over time. • The role of top performers emerges as fundamental today as it was 10, 20, and 30 years ago. • A surprising temporal stability of productivity patterns is found: The 1/10 and 10/50 rules apply across the three decades. • Women are underrepresented in all top performers classes. • Econometric models identify major predictors of top performance: gender, academic age, and research collaboration. In this research, the contributions of a highly productive minority of scientists to the national Polish research output over the past three decades (1992–2021) is explored. A large population of all internationally visible Polish scientists (N = 152,043) with their 587,558 articles is studied. In almost all previous research, the approaches to high research productivity are missing the time component. Cross-sectional studies were not complemented by longitudinal studies: Scientists comprising the classes of top performers have not been tracked over time. Three classes of top performers (the upper 1 %, 5 %, and 10 %) are examined, and a surprising temporal stability of productivity patterns is found. The 1/10 and 10/50 rules consistently apply across the three decades: The upper 1 % of scientists, on average, account for 10 % of the national output, and the upper 10 % account for almost 50 % of total output, with significant disciplinary variations. The Relative Presence Index (RPI) we constructed shows that men are overrepresented and women underrepresented in all top performers classes. Top performers are studied longitudinally through their detailed publishing histories, with micro-data coming from the raw Scopus dataset. Econometric models identify the three most important predictors that change the odds ratio estimates of membership in the top performance classes: gender, academic age, and research collaboration. The downward trend in fixed effects over successive six-year periods indicates increasing competition in Polish academia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After the restoration of democracy in Spain, the victims of the dictatorship were never recognized and the murderers were never judged. Silence was the norm in reference to the Civil War, the dictatorship, and the people who fought for democracy. Only a few civil society organizations and other similar groups tried to reclaim the memory of the victims by looking for their remains in mass graves and ditches and telling a different history than the official one presented in the textbooks. One of these groups is adult learners in the adult education school M. R. in Seville, Spain. They try, from the stories of common people, to create new knowledge and to restore the memory of and honor the victims. They are doing this by recovering oral testimonies and biographies and publishing them as a collective history. In the article, I will present the research conducted by these adult learners. It can be considered participatory research because it enables individuals to restore their memories, to create new knowledge confronting the official narrative, and, through publications and public speeches, to disseminate this knowledge and organize community practices honoring the victims. Official studies on publishing in Spain are limited and as a result little scientific research is available. There is no analysis of the production of doctoral theses which deal with this subject in any of its aspects, and so, little is known about matters related to the history and the production of one of the sectors which produces the greatest wealth of material and is considered the cultural industry par excellence. The goal of this article is to study the production of doctoral theses on the publishing industry and its history in the Spanish universities, with the specific purpose of obtaining information on the specific subject matters covered, the authors, the advisors or tutors of these theses and the institutions where these research studies have been carried out, within the period of 1976 and 2021. The general results have been the following: 103 theses from 31 universities (40 faculties and 75 departments) on 16 different subjects, which were defended in 40 faculties and corresponded to 75 departments, under the supervision of 123 professors. The present paper aims to, throughout a general comparison between the maritime histories published in Mexico and those that deal with insular Southeast Asia, make evident some limitations on the first one's scopes, and to demonstrate that, following some of the second one's approaches, studies with integral explanations about maritime societies can be accomplished. To sustain this, the paper will also present the author's research on the Balangingi Samals, a maritime community in southern Philippines in the nineteenth century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although interest in the eighteenth-century Church of England has recently undergone a marked revival, little attention has been given to works of theological or devotional exposition. By examining one of the most widely circulated treatises of this kind, first published in 1703/4, this article demonstrates how nonjuring and conforming High Churchmen continued after 1688 to work together in a common defence of orthodox faith and order, sustaining a tradition of patristic scholarship inherited from the Caroline divines to oppose Christological heresies and to uphold teaching on ministry, sacraments and the proper relations of Church and State. The long publishing history of Robert Nelson's Companion for the Festivals and Fasts of the Church of England, which was regularly reprinted during more than a hundred years, also suggests how 'advanced' High Church doctrines regarding episcopacy, apostolic commission, ecclesiastical discipline, and the sacraments, may have been far more influential throughout the pre-Tractarian period than is commonly assumed. The article revolves around the first Italian edition of The Philosophy of Andy Warhol. By reconstructing the history of the reception of Warhol in Italy since the 1960s, I position the book within the cultural moment at the turn of the 1980s. I look at the strategies behind the publication and compare it with the original English edition to assess both the editorial presentation and the quality of the translation. Focusing on the similarities as well as the diverging aspects, I argue that the book reinforced the perception of Warhol in Italy as an influential, yet controversial, figure.

Institutional histories present a challenge for university presses who may feel pressurized to publish non-scholarly content to please their institution. In June 2020, emails were sent to randomly selected university press directors and university heads of history departments requesting their general impressions and observations concerning publishing institutional histories. Email 15 June 2020
"University relations fit in because, well, the university fundraisers like to give gifts to donors, and a history of the university they support financially is a nice gift to give. We experienced this pressure in...., the University's Bicentennial and had to set up a strategy to ensure that we did not undermine the Press's reputation while at the same time publishing works that would make University leadership happy and extend awareness of our role in the local community. COMMUNITY development , *PRAXIS (Process) , *COLLECTIVE action , *HISTORY of publishing , *HISTORY of the book , *ETHNOLOGY , *RESEARCH personnel - Abstract
Using Favret-Saada’s methodological reflections on affectation, in this article, I will provide an analytical description of collectivization practices in the aboriginal community of San Miguel de Colorados (Northwest Argentina) and their relationship with other forms of collective management. The records I am going to comment on are based on my ethnographic experience as a researcher and co-director of a community project to publish a book on the history of Colorados. This led me and the families of the community to organize the work and decisions in very different ways, giving rise to a series of complaints, claims, and disagreements that have impacted the development of the project in many different ways. Following Favret-Saada’s conceptualizations of the importance of involuntary and non-representational communication in social praxis —or what Stengers calls the pragmatic dimension—, I describe how Coloradans and I are mutually, but differentially, affected by the book project. The idea is to explain the relational positions that mobilize these affectations, to demonstrate that this involuntary communication is rooted in a pragmatic misunderstanding; a misunderstanding between a definition of collective action as the result of representative consensus and another in which community decisions are formed through the temporary —and often conflictive— alignment of families and their points of view. This analysis is intended to contribute to anthropological reflection in collaborative contexts by considering the implications of native theories and practices of collective organization. BOOK industry , *PUBLISHING , *STOCK exchanges , *HISTORY of publishing , *BOOKSELLERS & bookselling , *SCHOLARLY publishing - Abstract
A whirlwind historical tour of the trade publishing (in English) landscape in India from the start of printing down to the present day, 75 years after Independence. The piece attempts to be a capsule history surveying the evolution of the trade book market through the multiple perspectives of authors, booksellers, genres, publishers, and market data. This is intended primarily as a quick introduction to the beginner and practitioner alike and is not intended to be an exhaustive narrative either by chronology or by genre or market information. It is a quick one-stop reference point for those who would like to see when and how the foundations for trade publishing were late, the key historical imperatives, early writing movements, the earliest booksellers, the beginnings of a formalized and sustained market through imports and distribution, and looks at the evolution of local Indian English publishing and how that has matured into a significant industry; and concludes by taking stock of current market realities and assays forward initiatives needed to reach the next level of stable development. This study is motivated by an article published in a local history magazine on "Pandemics in the History". That article was also motivated by a government report involving several statistical graphics which were drawn by hand in 1938 and used to summarize official statistics on epidemics occurred between the years 1923 and 1937. Due to the aesthetic information design available on these historical graphs, in this study, we would like to investigate how graphical elements of the graphs such as titles, axis lines, axis tick marks, tick mark labels, colors, and data values are presented on these graphics and how to reproduce these historical graphics via well-known data visualization package ggplot2 in our era. ENVIRONMENTAL ethics , *CULTURAL studies , *HISTORY of publishing , *SUBMERGED structures , *MATERIALISM , *ALLEGORY - Abstract
The objective of this essay is to map the growing number of works that focus on the environmental humanities and to review two important contributions to the ongoing debates that are defining the direction of Latin American and Caribbean cultural studies. In 2019, Héctor Hoyos published Things with a History: Transcultural Materialism and the Literatures of Extraction in Contemporary Latin America, as Elizabeth DeLoughrey published Allegories of the Anthropocene. While the scope of these two works varies in terms of the regional and/or national geographies they cover, as well as the authors and artists they analyse, both books attempt to contest the nature/culture binary – along with other Modern dichotomies – from very different (perhaps even opposite) positions and angles: while Hoyos calls for a de-allegorisation (namely, a "literalisation") of several important Latin American works, DeLoughrey, on the other hand, invites us to reconsider allegory as a way of symbolising the "perceived disjunction between humans and the planet, between our 'species' and a dynamic external 'nature'". Revue de Transylvanie appeared in Cluj as a reaction to the Hungarian propaganda that tried to accredit the idea that Transylvania, after becoming a Romanian province in 1918, had experienced a setback. The publication was founded in 1934—when it was clear that the dark clouds that had gathered over Europe threatened the new international order—at the initiative of Transylvanian intellectuals and with the financial support of the Astra Association. The Romanian state became financially involved much later, after the Vienna Arbitration, through the Center for Transylvanian Studies. More than 60 authors published studies in the journal, but the collaborators were much more numerous, if we take into account the other sections. However, only a few intellectuals and professors were permanent contributors of the publication, the heart and soul of the journal. We shall mention here those who published the most numerous studies, namely: Silviu Dragomir—9 studies, George Sofronie—8, Laurian Someşan—6, Coriolan Petranu—6, Ioachim Crăciun—4, and Ioan Lupaş—4. The medieval history research published in Revue de Transylvanie focused on important topics for the history of Romanians in Transylvania, namely: the presence of this population in the region before the arrival of the Hungarian tribes, the participation of their representatives in the political-administrative structures of the voivodeship, until 1437, the relations of the Romanians in Transylvania with the principalities from beyond the Carpathians, and the consequences of the Austrian reformist policy for the Romanian population in Transylvania. HISTORY of publishing ,REHABILITATION ,HAZARDS - Abstract
„Always historicize!" – the methodological imperative of modern humanities – has recently been countered by its opposite „Always anachronize!". The first section of this articles argues for an expanded understanding of historicization that includes its counterparts, inter alia anachronism. The second section analyses the example of a (covert) fictional representation of history published in 2015, Angela Steidele's Rosenstengel. Ostensibly an edition of newfound sources, it takes the interplay of historicization and anachronism particularly far and thus presents it to the reader to see through. Finally, the article discusses the rehabilitation of anachronism that is currently advancing both in artistic representations of history and in theory. How does historicization change when anachronism is no longer seen and treated as the greatest danger, coming from outside, but as an inherent, potentially productive component? HISTORY of publishing ,LITERARY characters ,POETICS ,TASKS ,AUTHORS - Abstract
The preparation of any critical edition must inevitably be based on textological research. When it comes to the prose works of Štefan Krčméry (1892 – 1955), issues to be taken into account include not only the history of the texts in question, but also the complexity of author’s oeuvre, since analysis of his prose works often confirms the need to consider both these components. Clarifying the literary-historical context, defining the position of the prose works in Krčméry’s oeuvre and identifying the features of author’s poetics helps the editor gain the basis for the creation of editorial conception that would determine the character of the edition and support subsequent corrections made in the texts. Key issues pertaining to the preparatory process include the questions of completing of the texts, their linguistic adjustment and the way of presentation. The article points to the most prominent issues Štefan Krčméry’s prose texts pose in the initial stages of editorial preparation, but also to the basic textological and editorial tasks. Some of the proposed editorial solutions are substantiated by the publishing history of the texts in question. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The book features contributions from leading international scholars and covers a wide range of topics, including theory and methods, regional studies, and specific examples of religious spaces. While some chapters provide valuable insights and original research, others focus too narrowly on the author's own work. The book is truly global in its coverage, but the majority of contributors are based in North America. Overall, "The Oxford Handbook of Religious Space" is an ambitious and impressive resource for readers interested in the study of sacred spaces. [Extracted from the article]
