Precise driving status recognition is a prerequisite for human–vehicle collaborative driving systems towards sustainable road safety. In this study, a simulated driving platform was built to capture multimodal information simultaneously, including vision-modal data representing driver behaviour and sensor-modal data representing vehicle motion. Multisource data are used to quantify the risk of distracted driving status from four levels, safe driving, slight risk, moderate risk, and severe risk, rather than detecting action categories. A multimodal fusion method called vision-sensor fusion transformer (V-SFT) was proposed to incorporate the vision-modal of driver behaviour and sensor-modal data of vehicle motion. Feature concatenation was employed to aggregate representations of different modalities. Then, successive internal interactions were performed to consider the spatiotemporal dependency. Finally, the representations were clipped and mapped into four risk level label spaces. The proposed approach was evaluated under different modality inputs on the collected datasets and compared with some baseline methods. The results showed that V-SFT achieved the best performance with an recognition accuracy of 92.0%. It also indicates that fusing multimodal information effectively improves driving status understanding, and V-SFT extensibility is conducive to integrating more modal data.

Exposure to solar UV irradiation damages γ-crystallin, leading to cataract formation via aggregation. α-Crystallin, as a small heat shock protein, efficiently suppresses this irreversible aggregation by selectively binding the denatured γ-crystallin monomer. In this study, liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used to evaluate UV-325 nm irradiation-induced photodamage of human γD-crystallin in the presence of bovine α-crystallin, atomic force microscope (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques were used to detect the quaternary structure changes of the α-crystallin oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and temperature-jump nanosecond time-resolved IR absorbance difference spectroscopy were used to probe the secondary structure changes of bovine α-crystallin. We find that the thermal-induced subunit dissociation of the α-crystallin oligomer involves the breaking of hydrogen bonds at the dimeric interface, leading to three different spectral components at varied temperature regions as resolved from temperature-dependent IR spectra. Under UV-325 nm irradiation, unfolded γD-crystallin binds to the dissociated α-crystallin subunit to form an αγ-complex, then follows the reassociation of the αγ-complex to the partially dissociated α-crystallin oligomer. This prevents the aggregation of denatured γD-crystallin. The formation of the γD-bound α-crystallin oligomer is further confirmed by AFM and DLS analysis, which reveals an obvious size expansion in the reassociated αγ-oligomers. In addition, UV-325 nm irradiation causes a peptide bond cleavage of γD-crystallin at Ala158 in the presence of α-crystallin. Our results suggest a very effective protection mechanism for subunits dissociated from α-crystallin oligomers against UV irradiation-induced aggregation of γD-crystallin, at the expense of a loss of a short C-terminal peptide in γD-crystallin.

After the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, a large amount of radioactive contaminated soil was generated, which brought great challenges for treating and disposing of the soil. The recycling of slightly polluted soil can reduce the amount of contaminated soil. This paper analyzes the main exposed scenes of 137Cs polluted soil used in the construction of highway subgrade, soil bag handling and paving. The Monte Carlo algorithm (MCNP) and RESRAD-ONSITE program are used to simulate the two scenes respectively, and the concentration of 137Cs is derived in the soil at the effective dose of 1 mSv per year. It is concluded that: the annual effective doses of porter and paver are 0.41 mSv per year and 0.23 mSv per year respectively caused by 1 Bqg-1 137Cs contaminated soil; the activity of 137Cs are 2.44 Bqg-1 and 4.26 Bqg-1 respectively in the soil at 1 mSv per year for porter and paver; the calculated results are consistent with those reported by the Japan Atomic Research Agency. Also, they are lower than the activity concentration corresponding to the effective dose control level of 1 mSv per year under low-probability events in IAEA No. RS-G-1.7 slightly.

Background: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the most common cancer of head and neck cancer. Y-box binding protein-1 (YBX1) has tumor-promoting effects in some types of cancers. However, its role in LSCC remains unknown. This study set out to identify the role of YBX1 in LSCC Methods: Bioinformatics analysis of the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and our cohort data were used to explore the association of YBX1 expression with clinicopathological factors in LSCC. Then, cells with stably or transiently transfected with plasmid or siRNA were constructed to assess the effect of loss and gain of YBX1 on the biological phenotypes of LSCC cells in vitro. In addition, subcutaneous xenograft and orthotopic liver tumor mouse models were constructed for validation. The interrogated miRNA databases and subsequent luciferase reporter assays were used to confirm the miR-382-5p target of YBX1. At last, KEGG enrichment annotation from TGCA data was used for downstream analyses of miR-382-5p/YBX1 and verified by PCR and Western immunoblotting Results: The results showed that significant upregulation of YBX1 in LSCC tumors was correlated with advanced TNM stage and poor prognosis. Knockdown of YBX1 markedly impaired the proliferative, invasive, and migratory activity of Tu212 cells. We confirmed that miR-382-5p targets YBX1 to mediate LSCC progression both in vitro and in vivo. We further confirmed that miR-382-5p/YBX1 modulated the Ras/MAPK signaling axis to regulate the progression of LSCC. Conclusion: Together, our results indicated that YBX1 is an important promoter of LSCC progression. And miR-382-5p/YBX1/RAS/MAPK signaling pathway can be perceived as a promising target in the treatment of LSCC.

Aiming at the problem of high-dimensional features and data imbalance in credit risk assessment that affect model prediction results, a credit risk prediction method based on integrated learning is proposed from three levels of features, data and algorithms. First, a hybrid filter and Random Forest feature selection method is used to select features. This method uses the improved Relief algorithm to initially select features, then combines the maximum information coefficient to eliminate redundant features, and uses the Random Forest algorithm to further reduce the feature dimension. Second, on the basis of the Borderline-SMOTE method, an adaptive idea is introduced to generate a different number of new samples for each minority sample at the boundary, and a new interpolation method is used to make the new sample distribution more reasonable, so as to reduce the sample imbalance. Finally, the Focal Loss is used to improve the loss function of LightGBM, and the sample weight is adjusted through the parameters α and γ in the Focal Loss function so that the model pays more attention to minority samples and difficult-to-classify samples, and improves the accuracy of model classification. And use the improved algorithm as the base classifier and then use AdaBoost and random subspace methods to integrate to establish a credit risk prediction model. Through comparative experiments with other methods, the results show that this method effectively improves the G -mean value and the AUC value and has a better default prediction effect.

Qingyi decoction (QYD) has anti-inflammatory pharmacological properties and substantial therapeutic benefits on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in clinical practice. However, its protective mechanism against SAP-associated acute lung injury (ALI) remains unclear. In this study, we screened the active ingredients of QYD from the perspective of network pharmacology to identify its core targets and signaling pathways against SAP-associated ALI. Rescue experiments were used to determine the relationship between QYD and ferroptosis. Then, metabolomics and 16s rDNA sequencing were used to identify differential metabolites and microbes in lung tissue. Correlation analysis was utilized to explore the relationship between core targets, signaling pathways, metabolic phenotypes, and microbial flora, sorting out the potential molecular network of QYD against SAP-associated lung ALI. Inflammatory damage was caused by SAP in the rat lung. QYD could effectively alleviate lung injury, improve respiratory function, and significantly reduce serum inflammatory factor levels in SAP rats. Network pharmacology and molecular docking identified three key targets: ALDH2, AnxA1, and ICAM-1. Mechanistically, QYD may inhibit ferroptosis by promoting the ALDH2 expression and suppress neutrophil infiltration by blocking the cleavage of intact AnxA1 and downregulating ICAM-1 expression. Ferroptosis activator counteracts the pulmonary protective effect of QYD in SAP rats. In addition, seven significant differential metabolites were identified in lung tissues. QYD relatively improved the lung microbiome’s abundance in SAP rats. Further correlation analysis determined the correlation between ferroptosis, differential metabolites, and differential microbes. In this work, the network pharmacology, metabolomics, and 16s rDNA sequencing were integrated to uncover the mechanism of QYD against SAP-associated ALI. This novel integrated method may play an important role in future research on traditional Chinese medicine.

The bulk-boundary correspondence is a key concept in topological quantum materials. For instance, a quantum spin Hall insulator features a bulk insulating gap with gapless helical boundary states protected by the underlying Z2 topology. However, the bulk-boundary dichotomy and distinction are rarely explored in optical experiments, which can provide unique information about topological charge carriers beyond transport and electronic spectroscopy techniques. Here, we utilize mid-infrared absorption micro-spectroscopy and pump-probe micro-spectroscopy to elucidate the bulk-boundary optical responses of Bi4Br4, a recently discovered room-temperature quantum spin Hall insulator. Benefiting from the low energy of infrared photons and the high spatial resolution, we unambiguously resolve a strong absorption from the boundary states while the bulk absorption is suppressed by its insulating gap. Moreover, the boundary absorption exhibits a strong polarization anisotropy, consistent with the one-dimensional nature of the topological boundary states. Our infrared pump-probe microscopy further measures a substantially increased carrier lifetime for the boundary states, which reaches one nanosecond scale. The nanosecond lifetime is about one to two orders longer than that of most topological materials and can be attributed to the linear dispersion nature of the helical boundary states. The energy conversion in Earth’s surface environments over geological history heavily involves the redox reactions of natural minerals. Natural Mn(III/IV) oxides and Mn2+(aq) is one of the most important redox couples that significantly dictate the electron flow in nature. Elucidating their formation and redox reactions is of critical importance for understanding numerous elemental cycles and the evolution of redox environments on Earth and other planets. Previous studies generally consider biotic processes as the dominant oxidation pathway for Mn2+(aq) in natural environments. In this study, we demonstrate rapid abiotic oxidation of Mn2+(aq) through photocatalytic reactions in the presence of natural Fe oxide minerals at rates comparable to those of currently known biotic/abiotic oxidation processes. Fe oxide minerals not only facilitate the electron transfer, but also serve as templates for the heterogeneous nucleation of tunnel structured Mn oxides. This finding highlights an important yet previously overlooked abiotic process on the formation of Mn oxides, which offers a new pathway for explaining the commonly observed co-occurrence of Fe and Mn oxide minerals in nature and the origin of diverse structures of Mn oxides.

International audience; Layered cathode materials are commonly used in lithium and sodium ion batteries, but they are prone to degradation under electrochemical cycling during battery operation. Here we report a new type of degradation mechanism through the electrochemically induced mechanical buckling and delamination cracking of intercalation layers in a P2 Na0.7-Ni0.3Mn0.6Co0.1O2 (Na-NMC) cathode material. Kinks form in the delaminated layers due to severe local bending, and each kink consists of a vertical array of dislocations, resulting from an easy slip between transition metal oxide layers. In situ mechanical compression experiments directly reveal the kink formation due to strong mechanical anisotropy parallel and perpendicular to the intercalation layers in single-crystal Na-NMC. In situ electrochemical experiments indicate that kinks form during the desodiation process. Our results unveil a new mechanism of electrochemically induced mechanical degradation stemming from weak interlayer bonding in layered cathode materials. This work has broad implications for the mitigation of degradation associated with irreversible interlayer slip in layered cathode materials.

MXenes, a new family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, have received extensive interest due to their fascinating physicochemical properties, such as outstanding light-to-heat conversion efficiency. However, the photothermal conversion mechanism of MXenes is still poorly understood. Here, by using femtosecond visible and mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy, the electronic energy dissipation dynamics of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets dispersed in various solvents are carefully studied. Our results indicate that the lifetime of photoexcited MXene is strongly dependent on the surrounding environment. Especially, the interfacial electron-vibration coupling between the MXene nanosheets and the adjacent solvent molecules is directly observed following the ultrafast photoexcitation of MXene. It suggests that the interfacial interactions at the MXene-solvent interface play a critical role in the ultrafast energy transport dynamics of MXene, which offers a potentially feasible route for tailoring the light conversion properties of 2D systems.

Pancake virtual reality head-mounted displays (VR-HMDs) have attracted the attention of researchers in both academia and industry because of the compact size and light weight. However, owing to the use of optical path folding, there exist various stray lights in the optical system, which seriously degrades user experience. In this study, we analyze the causes and effects of multiple types of stray light systematically and design a VR-HMD with low stray light, large exit pupil diameter (EPD), compact form and light weight. Subsequently, several effective stray light suppression solutions are proposed and implemented. Finally, a prototype of a compact pancake VR-HMD system is successfully demonstrated. The prototype has stray light of less than 2.3%, a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 96° and an EPD of 10 mm at an 11 mm eye relief (ERF).

It has been a challenge to design an optical see-through head-mounted display that is compact, lightweight, and stray-light-suppressed by using freeform optics. A new type of design based on freeform prisms is presented. The system consists of three optical elements and a micro-display. Two prisms serve as near-eye viewing optics that magnify the image displayed by the micro-display, and the other freeform lens is an auxiliary element attached to the main wedge-shaped prism to provide an undistorted see-through view of a real-world scene. The overall thickness of the optical system does not exceed 9.5 mm, and the weight is less than 9.8 g per eye. The final system is based on a 0.49-inch micro-display and features a diagonal field of view of 38°, an F/number of 1.8, with a 10 mm × 7 mm exit pupil diameter, and a 19 mm eye relief. The causes of stray light in the optical-mechanical system are investigated, and effective solutions or theoretical suppression of stray light are given. The freeform optical elements are successfully fabricated, and the system performance is carefully investigated. The results show that the performance of the optical see-through head-mounted display is adequate for practical applications.

In this paper, a numerical study of the second-order model of recentlydeveloped higher-order peridynamic correspondence formulations is presented. Connectionsof the model with all three types of Mindlin first gradient theories areestablished. An implicit solution scheme based on the automatic differentiationtechnique for the construction of the stiffness matrix is developed. To examinethe material stability of the model, a wave dispersion analysis is conducted fordifferent combinations of horizon size and length scale parameter. To verify theprediction accuracy of the model, a benchmark linear elastic deformation problemwith analytical solution is modeled for different length scale parameters. From thewave dispersion analysis, it is found that the second-order model is stable as longas the material has nonzero length scale parameter. It is also found that increasingthe size of either the mesh spacing factor or the length scale parameter reducesthe dispersiveness of the angular frequency - wave number curve while increasingmesh spacing increases the dispersiveness of the curve. In the linear elastic deformationstudy, great agreements between the model predictions and the analyticalsolutions for nonzero length scale parameters are observed. For small length scaleparameter, both the model prediction and the analytical solution are very closeto conventional solution without considering length scale effect. This observationverifies the prediction accuracy of the model and confirms the ability of the modelto accurately capture the length scale effect in materials.

Specific targeting of cell organelles is indispensable for bioimaging and diagnostics but remains a challenge due to the limitation of highly selective fluorescent targeting probes. Herein, we successfully designed a molecular fusion route to controllably synthesize bright orange fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The relative nitrogen doping level of the GQDs reached 18.88 at%. The GQDs exhibited long-wavelength excitation fluorescence and photoluminescence (PL) stability. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy elucidated that the sp2 cluster and the surface state's synergistic effect contributed to the PL. Furthermore, the most alluring discovery was that the GQDs had good biocompatibility and an unprecedented targeting capability for superselective nucleus imaging without staining cell organelles. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that once the GQDs were transported across the plasma membrane, the higher the N-doping ratio of the GQDs was, and the easier the GQDs penetrated the membrane. The reason may stem from the compatibility of –NH2 with lipid molecules, which is higher than that of –OH. Enriched nitrogen doping in GQDs is beneficial for crossing the cell membrane to the target nucleus. Our findings could provide scientific theory and a technical basis to design nucleus-targeting probes in the future.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is one of the common acute abdominal inflammatory diseases in clinic with acute onset and rapid progress. About 20% of the patients will eventually develop into severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) characterized by a large number of inflammatory cells infiltration, gland flocculus flaky necrosis and hemorrhage, finally inducing systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Pancreatic enzyme activation, intestinal endotoxemia (IETM), cytokine activation, microcirculation disturbance, autonomic nerve dysfunction and autophagy dysregulation all play an essential role in the occurrence and progression of SAP. Organ dysfunction is the main cause of early death in SAP. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute lung injury (ALI) are common, while cardiac injury (CI) is not, but the case fatality risk is high. Many basic studies have observed obvious ultrastructure change of heart in SAP, including myocardial edema, cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial interstitial collagen deposition. Moreover, in clinical practice, patients with SAP often presented various abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) and cardiac function. Cases complicated with acute myocardial infarction and pericardial tamponade have also been reported and even result in stress cardiomyopathy. Due to the molecular mechanisms underlying SAP-associated cardiac injury (SACI) remain poorly understood, and there is no complete, unified treatment and sovereign remedy at present, this article reviews reports referring to the pathogenesis, potential markers and treatment methods of SACI in recent years, in order to improve the understanding of cardiac injury in severe pancreatitis.

CCAAT enhancer binding protein β (C/EBPβ), as a nuclear transcription factor necessary for the development of liver, airway epithelium, and adipose tissue, plays a vital role in physiological processes related to cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. However, the up-regulation of C/EBPβ activates signal pathways related to inflammatory response, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, cell proliferation and invasion, immune response, and angiogenesis by regulating a series of downstream genes transcription promotes the development of lung diseases. Therefore, targeting C/EBPβ may be a potential treatment strategy for lung diseases. This paper summarizes the regulatory effects of C/EBPβ and related signaling pathways in lung infection, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer to provide a theoretical basis for the precision medicine of lung diseases.

In order that fully self-driving vehicles can be realized, it is believed that systems where the driver shares control and authority with the intelligent vehicle offer the most effective solution. An understanding of driving intention is the key to building a collaborative autonomous driving system. In this study, the proposed method incorporates the spatiotemporal features of driver behavior and forward-facing traffic scenes through a feature extraction module; the joint representation was input into an inference module for obtaining driver intentions. The feature extraction module was a two-stream structure that was designed based on a deep three-dimensional convolutional neural network. To accommodate the differences in video data inside and outside the cab, the two-stream network consists of a slow pathway that processes the driver behavior data with low frame rates, along with a fast pathway that processes traffic scene data with high frame rates. Then, a gated recurrent unit, based on a recurrent neural network, and a fully connected layer constitute an intent inference module to estimate the driver’s lane-change and turning intentions. A public dataset, Brain4Cars, was used to validate the proposed method. The results showed that compared with modeling using the data related to driver behaviors, the ability of intention inference is significantly improved after integrating traffic scene information. The overall accuracy of the intention inference of five intents was 84.92% at a time of 1 s prior to the maneuver, indicating that making full use of traffic scene information was an effective way to improve inference performance.

Over the past decades, low‐dose computed tomography (LD‐CT) screening has been widely used for the early detection of lung cancer. Increasing numbers of indeterminate pulmonary nodules are now being discovered. However, it remains challenging to distinguish malignant from benign pulmonary nodules, especially those considered to be small or ground‐glass (GGN) nodules. Liquid biopsies have been successfully applied in the diagnosis of advanced lung cancer, and the potential value for early detection of lung cancer has made great progress. Recent studies have demonstrated the value of various blood‐based tumor biomarkers in determining the nature of pulmonary nodules, including cell‐free DNA (cfDNA), microRNAs (miRNAs), circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and tumor‐associated autoantibodies (AAbs). In this review, we summarize the latest progress of liquid biopsies, and their potential applications and challenges in the diagnosis of malignant pulmonary nodules., Schematic representation of liquid biopsies for aiding in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules detected by LD‐CT. Circular microdisk mechanical resonators vibrating in their various resonance modes have emerged as important platforms for a wide spectrum of technologies including photonics, cavity optomechanics, optical metrology, and quantum optics. Optically transduced microdisk resonators made of advanced materials such as silicon carbide (SiC), diamond, and other wide- or ultrawide-bandgap materials are especially attractive. They are also of strong interest in the exploration of transducers or detectors for harsh environments and mission-oriented applications. Here we report on the first experimental investigation and analysis of energetic proton radiation effects on microdisk resonators made of 3C-SiC thin film grown on silicon substrate. We fabricate and study microdisks with diameters of ∼48 µm and ∼36 µm, and with multimode resonances in the ∼1 to 20 MHz range. We observe consistent downshifts of multimode resonance frequencies, and measure fractional frequency downshifts from the first three flexural resonance modes, up to ∼-3420 and -1660 ppm for two devices, respectively, in response to 1.8 MeV proton radiation at a dosage of 1014/cm2. Such frequency changes are attributed to the radiation-induced Young’s modulus change of ∼0.38% and ∼0.09%, respectively. These devices also exhibit proton detection responsivity of ℜ ≈ -5 to -6 × 10−6 Hz/proton. The results provide new knowledge of proton radiation effects in SiC materials, and may lead to better understanding and exploitation of micro/nanoscale devices for harsh-environment sensing, optomechanics, and integrated photonics applications.
