BackgroundPreeclampsia is a heterogeneous and complex disease with its pathogenesis mechanism not fully elucidated. A certain subset of patients with preeclampsia exhibit disturbances in lipid metabolism before clinical symptoms. Moreover, there is a tendency for preeclampsia to run in families. Whether genetic factors play a role in abnormal lipid metabolism during the incidence of preeclampsia has not been well investigated.MethodsPreeclampsia patients (n = 110) and healthy age- and gravidity-matched pregnant women (n = 110) were enrolled in this study. Peripheral blood specimens were used for genomic analysis (n = 10/group) or laboratory validation (n = 100/group). We retrospectively obtained the baseline clinical characteristics of 68 preeclampsia patients and 107 controls in early pregnancy (12–14 gestational weeks). Correlation analyses between differential genes and baseline lipid profiles were performed to identify candidate genes. In vitro and in vivo gain-of-function models were constructed with lentivirus and adeno-associated virus systems, respectively, to investigate the role of candidate genes in regulating lipid metabolism and the development of preeclampsia.ResultsWe observed that preeclampsia patients exhibited significantly elevated plasma TC (P = 0.037) and TG (P < 0.001) levels and increased body mass index (P = 0.006) before the disease onset. Within the region of 27 differential copy number variations, six genes potentially connected with lipid metabolism were identified. The aberrant copies of APOBEC3A, APOBEC3A_B, BTNL3, and LMF1 between preeclampsia patients and controls were verified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Especially, APOBEC3A showed a significant positive correlation with TC (P < 0.001) and LDL (P = 0.048) in early pregnancy. Then, our in vitro data revealed that overexpression of APOBEC3A disrupted lipid metabolism in HepG2 cells and affected both cholesterol and fatty acid metabolisms. Finally, in vivo study in a hepatic-specific overexpressed APOBEC3A mouse model revealed abnormal parameters related to lipid metabolism. Pregnant mice of the same model at the end of pregnancy showed changes related to preeclampsia-like symptoms, such as increases in sFlt-1 levels and sFlt-1/PLGF ratios in the placenta and decreases in fetal weight.ConclusionOur findings established a new link between genetics and lipid metabolism in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and could contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of preeclampsia.

We previously reported that the structural modifications of pentacyclic triterpenoids including oleanolic acid resulted in enhanced hyaluronidase inhibitory activity but whether this applies to other pentacyclic triterpenoids such as betulinic acid (BA) is unknown. Herein, we synthesized BA derivatives with an α,β-unsaturated ketene moiety and evaluated for their: 1) hyaluronidase inhibitory activity and, 2) anti-inflammatory effects against lipopolysaccharides (LPS) induced inflammation. Compared to BA, the BA derivatives exerted improved anti-hyaluronidase activity (26.3%–72.8% vs. 22.6%) and anti-inflammatory effects by reducing nitrite production in BV2 cells (3.9%–46.8% vs. 3.4%) and RAW264.7 cells (22.7%–49.2% vs. 20.4%). BA derivatives inhibited LPS-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in THP-1 cells (15.2%–22.4%). BA derivatives also exerted promising anti-inflammatory effects against hyaluronic acid fragment induced nitrite production (8.6%–35.6%) in THP-1 cells. BA derivatives showed augmented anti-hyaluronidase and anti-inflammatory effects but further biological evaluations using in vivo models are warranted to confirm their efficacy.

Ultra-precise stimulation solely to individual mitochondria, without any influence to the whole cell, is quite difficult by traditional biochemical reagents. In mitophagy research, the mitochondria and even the whole cell usually suffer irreversible and great damage caused by treatment with potent chemicals. In this protocol, we present the technical procedures of our developed noninvasive ultra-precise laser stimulation (UPLaS) technology, which introduces precise stimulation to individual mitochondria, to excite mitochondrial Ca2+ (mitoCa2+) oscillations, with little perturbation to mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), or mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mitoROS). The mitoCa2+ oscillation by UPLaS was able to initiate the PINK1/Parkin pathway for mitophagy. This protocol has good potential to benefit researches on mitophagy and mitochondrial diseases. Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) are composed of alloy materials with the core and insulating layers as the shell. These composites exhibit high saturation magnetic sensitivity and low hysteresis loss, making them a promising material for various applications. The investigation of double layers is considered valuable as it can effectively address the issues of low resistivity and high dynamic loss that arise from non-uniform insulating layers in SMCs. In this study, Fe-Si-Cr/SiO2 particles with a core–shell heterostructure were produced via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The Fe-Si-Cr/SiO2 materials were coated with different weight percentages (1–6%) of sodium silicate (SS). Subsequently, Fe-Si-Cr-based SMCs were synthesized through high-pressure molding and heat treatment. The effect of the SS weight percentage on microscopic changes and magnetic characteristics was investigated. These findings indicated that a concentration of 4 wt% of SS was the most effective at enhancing magnetic characteristics. The resultant SMCs exhibited high resistivity (21.07 mΩ·cm), the lowest total loss (P10 mt/300 kHz of 44.23 W/kg), a relatively high saturation magnetization (181.8 emu/g), and permeability (35.9). Furthermore, it was observed that the permeability exhibited stabilization at lower frequencies. According to these findings, the combination of CVD and double layers could lead to the further development of SMCs in a variety of applications.

Fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (FOSPR) sensing technology has become an appealing candidate in biochemical sensing applications due to its distinguished capability of remote and point-of-care detection. However, FOSPR sensing devices with a flat plasmonic film on the optical fiber tip are seldom proposed with most reports concentrating on fiber sidewalls. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the plasmonic coupled structure of a gold (Au) nanodisk array and a thin film integrated into the fiber facet, enabling the excitation of the plasmon mode on the planar gold film by strong coupling. This plasmonic fiber sensor is fabricated by the ultraviolet (UV) curing adhesive transferring technology from a planar substrate to a fiber facet. The experimental results demonstrate that the fabricated sensing probe has a bulk refractive index sensitivity of 137.28 nm/RIU and exhibits moderate surface sensitivity by measuring the spatial localization of its excited plasmon mode on Au film by layer-by-layer self-assembly technology. Furthermore, the fabricated plasmonic sensing probe enables the detection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) biomolecule with a detection limit of 19.35 μM. The demonstrated fiber probe here provides a potential strategy to integrate plasmonic nanostructure on the fiber facet with excellent sensing performance, which has a unique application prospect in the detection of remote, in situ, and in vivo invasion.

Constructed on the benzothiazole-oxanthracene structure, a fluorescent probe RBg for Cu+ was designed under the ESIPT mechanism and synthesized by incorporating amide bonds as the connecting group and glyoxal as the identifying group. Optical properties revealed a good sensitivity and a good linear relationship of the probe RBg with Cu+ in the concentration range of [Cu+] = 0–5.0 μmol L−1. Ion competition and fluorescence-pH/time stability experiments offered further possibilities for dynamic Cu+ detection in an aqueous environment. HRMS analysis revealed a possible 1:1 combination of RBg and Cu+. In addition, colorimetric Cu+ detection and lysosome-targeted properties of the probe RBg were analyzed through RBg-doped PVDF nanofiber/test strips and RBg-Mito/Lyso trackers that were co-stained in living HeLa cells, enabling the probe’s future applications as real-time detection methods for dynamic Cu+ tracking in the lysosomes and Cu+ detection under diversified conditions.

Summary: Recent technological advancements on stem cell differentiation induction have been making great progress in stem cell research, regenerative medicine, and therapeutic applications. However, the risk of off-target differentiation limits the wide application of stem cell therapy strategies. Here, we report a non-invasive all-optical strategy to induce stem cell differentiation in vitro and in vivo that activates individual target stem cells in situ by delivering a transient 100-ms irradiation of a tightly focused femtosecond laser to a submicron cytoplasmic region of primary adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). The ADSCs differentiate to osteoblasts with stable lineage commitment that cannot further transdifferentiate because of simultaneous initiation of multiple signaling pathways through specific Ca2+ kinetic patterns. This method can work in vivo to direct mouse cerebellar granule neuron progenitors to granule neurons in intact mouse cerebellums through the skull. Hence, this optical method without any genetic manipulations or exogenous biomaterials holds promising potential in biomedical research and cell-based therapies.

When multiple scattered wind farms are connected to the power grid, the meteorological and geographic information data used for power prediction of a single wind farm are not suitable for the regional wind power prediction of the dispatching department. Therefore, based on the regional wind power historical data, this study proposes a combined prediction method according to data decomposition. Firstly, the original sequence processed by the extension methods is decomposed into several regular components by Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN). All the components are classified into two categories: fluctuant components and smooth components. Then, according to the characteristics of different data, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model are used to model the fluctuant components and the smooth components, respectively, and obtain the predicted values of each component. Finally, the predicted data of all components are accumulated, which is the final predicted result of the regional ultra-short-term wind power. The feasibility and accuracy of this method are verified by the comparative analysis.

BackgroundThe Ankura II Thoracic Stent Graft System (Lifetech, Shenzhen, China) is an evolution of the Ankura stent graft. This study reports one-year outcomes of the Ankura II Thoracic Stent Graft System for endovascular treatment of Stanford type B aortic dissections.MethodsThe Ankura II Thoracic Aortic Endovascular Trial was a randomized, single-blinded, clinical trial conducted at 12 Chinese institutes. The enrolled patients diagnosed with Stanford type B aortic dissections (TBADs) were randomly assigned to the Ankura group or Ankura II group. Standard follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 6, and 12 months. Safety and efficacy data were analyzed.Results132 patients with TBADs were enrolled. The outcomes for the primary safety end points revealed that the Ankura II stent graft was statistically non-inferior compared to the Ankura stent graft. The 1-month device-related major adverse events (1.6 vs. 0%; p = 0.48), 1-month all-cause mortality (1.7 vs. 4.5%; p = 0.621), 12-month survival rate (95.2 ± 2.7% vs. 94.1 ± 2.9%; p = 0.769), and major adverse event (MAE) rate (5.1 vs. 4.7% at 1 month; p = 0.73 and 5.8 vs. 8.9% at 12 months; p = 0.718) of Ankura II group are all comparable to Ankura group. The two groups showed similar primary effectiveness and true lumen expansion effect, and false lumen remodeling was improved in Ankura II group (−100.0 vs. −48.5%; p = 0.08).ConclusionsThe one-year outcomes from this prospective, randomized, multicenter study demonstrate that Ankura II stent graft shows comparable results to Ankura for treating TBADs, resulting in low mortality rates, MAEs and reintervention rates.Clinical Trial RegistrationChiCTR-TRC-12002844.

Environment, diseases, lack of exercise, and aged tendency of population have becoming crucial factors that induce vascular aging. Vascular aging is unmodifiable risk factor for diseases like diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. Effective interventions to combat this vascular function decline is becoming increasingly urgent as the rising hospitalization rate caused by vascular aging-related diseases. Fortunately, recent transformative omics approaches have enabled us to examine vascular aging mechanisms at unprecedented levels and precision, which make our understanding of slowing down or reversing vascular aging become possible. Epigenetic viz. DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA-based mechanisms, is a hallmark of vascular aging, its deregulation leads to aberrant transcription changes in tissues. Epigenetics mechanisms by mediating covalent modifications to DNA and histone proteins, consequently, influence the sensitivity and activities of signaling pathways in cells and tissues. A growing body of evidence supports correlations between epigenetic changes and vascular aging. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive overview of epigenetic changes associated with vascular aging based on the recent findings with a focus on molecular mechanisms of action, strategies to reverse epigenetic changes, and future perspectives.

Flow characteristics and phase distribution of concentrated brine storage in mining area have been core factors linking to the leakage risk assessment and ecological evaluation. Notably, saturation plays a crucial role in impacting the flow characteristics and distribution of brine, while the existence of oil left by mining machines and original reservoir and gas produced from coal bed gas and air has complicated the issue. In this work, we conducted the microfluidic visualization experiments to reveal the saturation distribution during brine storage in mining area. We applied machine learning model to extract saturation data from experimental images with over 95% accuracy. Eventually, we found that the existence of gas significantly impacts on the saturation distribution in micropores accounting for more than 80% contribution. We clarified that the gas production rate of median 200 μL/min impacts the least on saturation variation. Results in this research are of significance for deeper comprehension on three-phase saturation characteristics of concentrated brine storage in mining area.

By embedding blockchain technology into the process of standardized production of agricultural products, we use the characteristics of blockchain such as tamper-proof, decentralization, and consensus mechanism to solve the trust problem, responsibility problem, and quality problem in the process of standardized production of agricultural products. These three subjects in the process of standardized production of agricultural products are analysed, and the three-party game model among agricultural producers, government, and consumers is constructed with the help of the evolutionary game method, and the influence of each subject in different strategies is analysed, and the inference results are simulated and experimented with MATLAB 2016 software. The results show that the standardized production of agricultural products embedded in blockchain needs to meet three basic conditions: agricultural producers need to ensure that the sum of production costs and penalties for noncompliance following technological innovation using blockchain is less than the sum of production costs and penalties for noncompliance for traditional agricultural products; the difference value between strict and loose government regulation needs to be smaller than the amount of penalty for violation of standardized production of agricultural products embedded in blockchain; the cost of whistleblowing for consumers needs to be less than the number of penalties incurred for production violations when agricultural producers choose standardized production of agricultural products embedded in blockchain. It is also found that the violation ratio of agricultural producers, the social welfare of strict government regulation, and the whistleblowing benefit of consumers are the key factors affecting the standardized production of agricultural products, and the analysis of the influence of the key factors points to the direction for promoting the standardized production of agricultural products.

China hosts rich shale gas resources. The Longmaxi Formation (LF) in the Sichuan Basin is one of the important regions for shale gas exploration and extraction. Here, we investigate the pore structure and factors influencing the gas-bearing characteristics of the pores in the shale reservoirs in the LF. We employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), gas content testing, gas saturation testing based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), overburden porosity and permeability analysis, distribution of pore size, specific surface area (SSA) analysis, and geochemical analysis. Our results show that the organic matter of the shale in the LF in the study area is highly favorable to shale gas conditions; the brittleness of the regional shale generally increases with an increase in depth. The pores in the LF mainly include organic matter-hosted pores, intergranular pores, intragranular pores, and microfissures, with mesopores dominating. Meanwhile, the gas content also increases with an increase in depth. The pore structure in the study area is affected by organic matter content and mineral components, with the development of organic matter-hosted pores. The porosity and the SSA are positively correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC), whereas clay minerals have an adverse effect on the SSA of pores in the study area. Higher TOC and vitrinite reflectance (Ro) indicate higher gas content. It can be inferred that as the content of brittle minerals increases, particles break to form storage spaces as the depth increases, causing the gas content to increase. Higher SSA and total pore volume indicate higher volume of adsorbed gas. The bound water in rocks tends to reduce the content of desorbed gas. Our results suggest high potential for shale gas extraction in this region.

This paper proposes a large-scale group decision-making model with cooperative behavior based on social network analysis considering propagation of decision-makers’ preference, which is applicable for large-scale group decision-making problems in social network contexts. The main contributions of our research are three aspects. Firstly, a novel calculation method of cooperative degree, hesitant degree, and noncooperative degree is developed, which considers both the network status and the preference for each DM, and thereby it can better represent the current state for each DM. Then, the determination method of each DM’s weight is presented, which considers both the individual network centrality and preference similarity degree. In addition, the score for the current cooperation situation is performed, and the improvement algorithm of the increase of cooperative degree and the decrease of noncooperative degree is designed to enhance the quality of the decision-making results. Finally, the proposed model has demonstrated the validity and superiority based on the comparative and sensitive analysis through a practical example.

Countries around the world advocate low-carbon, green, and environmentally friendly lifestyles to combat climate change, which provides clear direction for enterprise decisions. This paper studies a low-carbon dual-channel supply chain based on behavioral economics, incentive theory, and optimization models to better formulate pricing decisions. This paper constructs a fair and neutral decentralized decision-making model (FNDD), a decentralized decision-making model considering Nash bargaining fairness concerns (NBFDD), a decentralized decision-making model considering absolute fairness concerns (AFDD), and a fair and neutral centralized decision-making model (FNCD) considering consumer preferences and the situations where supply chain members are fairness concerns or fairness neutrality. This paper analyzes the effect of low-carbon advertising level on pricing strategies of online retailers and offline stores and compares pricing strategies of online retailers and offline stores in four decisions. The results show that Nash bargaining fairness concerns of supply chain members could effectively reduce the retail price of low-carbon products and increase their sales volumes. Absolute fairness concerns intensify the dual marginal effect of decentralized decision-making.

This study proposes a large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) consensus model considering the experts’ adjustment willingness based on the interactive weights’ determination, which can be applied to an LSGDM problem through a case of earthquake shelters. The main contributions of our research are of three aspects as follows. First, the determination method of the interactive weight, which obtains the DMs’ attitude towards the decision-making results, is presented. The subgroups’ weights are calculated, and the unit adjustment cost for each DM is defined. Second, we introduce an objective consensus threshold by the mean and variance of the consensus level for each subgroup. Subsequently, an identification rule is performed to determine the DM to be adjusted with the large difference and the low adjustment cost. And we developed a novel consensus adjustment method that takes the DMs’ adjustment willingness into account to retain as much original information as possible. Thirdly, in order to reduce the subjectivity of the preset consensus threshold and the maximum number of iterations, an objective consensus termination condition that combines the current group consensus level and the consensus adjustment rate is put forward. Finally, the proposed model has demonstrated its effectiveness and superiority based on the comparative and sensitive analysis through a practical example.

Composed of a fluidic and an optical system, flow cytometry has been widely used for biosensing. The fluidic flow enables its automatic high-throughput sample loading and sorting while the optical system works for molecular detection by fluorescence for micron-level cells and particles. This technology is quite powerful and highly developed; however, it requires a sample in the form of a suspension and thus only works in vitro. In this study, we report a simple scheme to construct a flow cytometry based on a confocal microscope without any modifications. We demonstrate that line scanning of microscopy can effectively excite fluorescence of flowing microbeads or cells in a capillary tube in vitro and in blood vessels of live mice in vivo. This method can resolve microbeads at several microns and the results are comparable to a classic flow cytometer. The absolute diameter of flowing samples can be indicated directly. The sampling limitations and variations of this method is carefully analyzed. This scheme can be easily accomplished by any commercial confocal microscope systems, expands the function of them, and is of promising potential for simultaneous confocal microscopy and in vivo detection of cells in blood vessels of live animals by a single system.

This study aimed to investigate the impacts of straw and biochar on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and grain yield in a double rice cropping system under optimal N fertilizer reduction. Conventional fertilization (CF) was used as the control group, and treatments included optimal fertilization and 15% less nitrogen (OF), together with straw (S) or biochar (B) applied under different fertilization conditions, namely CF + S, CF + B, OF + S, and OF + B. The effects of treatments on soil CH4 and N2O emissions were studied, and changes in soil physicochemical properties were analyzed. The results showed that relative to CF, CF + S and OF + S increased the cumulative CH4 emissions by 11.80% and 2.35%, respectively, while CF + B and OF + B resulted in significant reductions in cumulative CH4 emissions by 27.80% and 28.46%, respectively. Biochar was effective in reducing N2O emissions, and OF further increased the potential, with CF + B and OF + B achieving the best N2O reductions of 30.56% and 32.21%, respectively. Although OF reduced yields by 0.16%, this difference was within reasonable limits; the remaining treatments increased grain yields by 2.55% to 3.47%. CF + B and OF + B reduced the global warming potential (GWP) by 27.93% and 28.63%, respectively, and ultimately reduced the greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) by 30.42% and 30.97%. Both straw and biochar increased the soil organic matter, NH4+-N, and NO3−-N contents, and biochar increased the soil pH, which may be the potential mechanism regulating soil GHG emissions. Overall, OF + B is beneficial for reducing GHG emissions and may be a better agronomic cropping pattern in double season rice growing areas.

In deep space exploration the exploration equipment will inevitably experience the harsh environment of cryogenic temperature. Solder joints belong to the most vulnerable parts of electronic equipment, and the harsh environment of extreme cryogenic temperature will seriously threaten the reliability of solder joints. In this paper, Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu/Cu solder joints were prepared and stored at cryogenic temperatures (−50 °C, −100 °C, and −196 °C) for up to 960 h, whilst studying the microstructural evolution and deterioration of shear properties. The results showed that the influence of cryogenic temperature on microstructure deterioration was greater than that of storage time. With the decrease of storage temperature and the extension of storage time, the Ag3Sn intermetallic compounds (IMCs) were uniformly dispersed in the β-Sn matrix; the size decreased and the number increased. After being stored at −196 °C for 960 h, some microcracks appeared at the interface of the solder joints. Meanwhile, the shear force of the solder joints was reduced by 19.02%, and the fracture mode changed from ductile fracture to ductile–brittle mixed fracture. Therefore, it is of great scientific significance to reveal the microstructural evolution and deterioration of shear properties of the solder joints under long-term storage at cryogenic temperatures.

A novel nitrogen-free austenitic stainless steel with a hardness of >200 HV was developed using metal injection molding (MIM), and the effects of graphite addition on the sintering behavior, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of heat-treated samples were investigated. The results show that a certain amount of graphite addition increases the relative density to >98%. In samples with the addition of 0–500 ppm graphite, large grain-boundary precipitates reduced corrosion resistance and ductility. In contrast, when graphite addition was increased to 750–1500 ppm, fine precipitates, which exhibited coherent lattice relationships with the matrix, were uniformly distributed within the grain and grain boundaries; this significantly improved the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The tensile strength and elongation intervals were 546.94–608.62 MPa and 29.68–24.63%, respectively. To prevent overburning, samples with a graphite content higher than 3000 ppm were sintered at a lower temperature, resulting in a higher porosity and lower performance.

We employ the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE-2) physics model to study how the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) evolve during galaxy mergers. We conduct a pixel-by-pixel analysis of molecular gas properties in both the simulated control galaxies and galaxy major mergers. The simulated GMC pixels in the control galaxies follow a similar trend in a diagram of velocity dispersion ( σ _v ) versus gas surface density (Σ _mol ) to the one observed in local spiral galaxies in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) survey. For GMC pixels in simulated mergers, we see a significant increase of a factor of 5–10 in both Σ _mol and σ _v , which puts these pixels above the trend of PHANGS galaxies in the σ _v versus Σ _mol diagram. This deviation may indicate that GMCs in the simulated mergers are much less gravitationally bound compared with simulated control galaxies with virial parameters ( α _vir ) reaching 10–100. Furthermore, we find that the increase in α _vir happens at the same time as the increase in global star formation rate, which suggests that stellar feedback is responsible for dispersing the gas. We also find that the gas depletion time is significantly lower for high- α _vir GMCs during a starburst event. This is in contrast to the simple physical picture that low- α _vir GMCs are easier to collapse and form stars on shorter depletion times. This might suggest that some other physical mechanisms besides self-gravity are helping the GMCs in starbursting mergers collapse and form stars.

Autotoxicity is known as a critical factor in replanting problem that reduces land utilization and creates economic losses. Benzoic acid (BA) is identified as a major autotoxin in peach replant problem, and causes stunted seedling growth or even death. However, the physiological and molecular mechanisms of peach response to BA stress remain elusive. Here, we comprehensively studied the morphophysiological, transcriptional, and metabolic responses of peach plants to BA toxicity. Results showed that BA stress inhibited peach seedlings growth, decreased chlorophyll contents and fluorescence levels, as well as disturbed mineral metabolism. The contents of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, and malondialdehyde, as well as the total antioxidant capacity, were significantly increased under BA stress. A total of 6,319 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after BA stress, of which the DEGs related to photosynthesis, redox, and ion metabolism were greatly changed; meanwhile, numerous stress-responsive genes (HSPs, GSTs, GR, and ABC transporters) and transcription factors (MYB, AP2/ERF, NAC, bHLH, and WRKY) were noticeably altered under BA stress. BA induced metabolic reprogramming, and 74 differentially accumulated metabolites, including amino acids and derivatives, fatty acids, organic acids, sugars, and sugar alcohols, were identified in BA-stressed roots. Furthermore, an integrated analysis of genes and metabolites indicated that most of the co-mapped KEGG pathways were enriched in amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, which implied a disturbed carbon and nitrogen metabolism after BA stress. The findings would be insightful in elucidating the mechanisms of plant response to autotoxicity stress, and help guide crops in alleviating replant problem.

Bone-related diseases seriously affect the lives of patients and carry a heavy economic burden on society. Treatment methods cannot meet the diverse clinical needs of affected patients. Exosomes participate in the occurrence and development of many diseases through intercellular communication, including bone-related diseases. Studies have shown that exosomes can take-up and “package” non-coding RNAs and “deliver” them to recipient cells, thereby regulating the function of recipient cells. The exosomal non-coding RNAs secreted by osteoblasts, osteoclasts, chondrocytes, and other cells are involved in the regulation of bone-related diseases by inhibiting osteoclasts, enhancing chondrocyte activity and promoting angiogenesis. Here, we summarize the role and therapeutic potential of exosomal non-coding RNAs in the bone-related diseases osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and bone-fracture healing, and discuss the clinical application of exosomes in patients with bone-related diseases.

Purpose: To report a novel common-iliac-artery skirt technology (CST) in treating challenge iliac artery aneurysms.Methods: When required healthy landing zone of common iliac artery (CIA) is not available, CST is a strategy to exclude the internal iliac artery (IIA) and prevent IIA reflux without need of embolization. Patients who received endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in our center from 2014 to 2020 were retrospectively screened, and patients treated with CST or with IIA embolization (IIAE) were enrolled.Results: After retrospective screen of 524 EVAR patients, 39 CST patients, 26 IIAE patients, and 7 CST + IIAE patients were enrolled in this study. CST group suggested to have more aged, hyperlipemia, and smoking patients than IIAE group. Two groups had comparable maximal diameter of abdominal aorta (AA), CIA, EIA, but larger diameter of IIA (CST 19.82 ± 2.281 vs. IIAE 27.82 ± 3.401, p = 0.048), and CIA bifurcation (CST 25.01 ± 1.316 vs. IIAE 29.76 ± 2.775, p = 0.087) was found in IIAE group. Anatomy of 79.5% of CST patients and 92.3% of IIAE patients (p = 0.293) was not suitable for potential use of iliac branch device. CST group had significant shorter surgery time (CST 97.42 ± 3.891 vs. IIAE 141.0 ± 8.010, p < 0.001), shorter hospital stay (CST 15.35 ± 0.873 vs. IIAE 19.32 ± 1.067, p = 0.009), lower in-hospital [CST 0% (0/39) vs. IIAE 11.5% (3/26), p = 0.059] and 1-year follow-up stent related MAEs [CST 6.7% (2/30) vs. IIAE 28.6% (6/21), p = 0.052], but comparable mortality and stent related MAEs for all-cohort follow-up analysis comparing to IIAE group. In our study, a lower in-hospital buttock claudication (BC) rate for CST (CST 20.5% vs. IIAE 46.2%, p = 0.053) and a comparable erectile dysfunction (ED) rate (CST 10.3% vs. IIAE 23.1%, p = 0.352) were found between CST and IIAE groups. After 1 year, both groups had about one third relief of BC symptoms [CST 33.3% (4/12) vs. IIAE 30.7% (4/13), p = 1.000]. Subgroup analysis of 14 patents concomitant with IIA aneurysm in CST group and the 7 CST + IIAE patients were carried out, and no difference was found in mortality, stent MAEs, sac dilation, or reintervention rate. Last, illustration of seven typical CST cases was presented.Conclusion: In selected cases, the CST is a safe, feasible-and-effective choose in treating challenge iliac artery aneurysms and preventing IIA endoleak.

Background: The world is moving towards digitalization and intelligence. Programming has become an essential development competency. Even though many countries are currently making great efforts to expand programming education, the programming education in these countries shows an imbalance in geographical and gender dimensions. We found that few studies paid attention to rural girls' programming learning in developing countries. Objectives: This study focuses on programming learning among rural girls in a developing country (China) from an educational equity perspective. We investigated the level and the changes in these girls' self-efficacy and interest in programming. Methods: We conducted a three-month (12-week) semester of programming teaching for rural fifth-grade girls. Two rounds of data collection were conducted at the mid-semester (first-measure) and the end of the semester (second-measure), with semi-structured interviews at the end of the semester. Results and conclusions: The results showed that rural girls' programming self-efficacy was at a moderate-to-high level and remained stable, but there were no gender differences in programming self-efficacy between boys and girls in the second-measure. Girls' self-efficacy was positively correlated with interest, and programming education could help girls to increase their interest in programming, but boys and girls did not show gender differences in their programming interest in second-measure. Interestingly, we found that girls' perceived programming knowledge acquisition was significantly higher than overall programming efficacy. Takeaways: These findings provide meaningful implications for programming education in less developed areas and female early programming education.

Mitochondria locate close to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and cooperate with ER to encode intracellular calcium signaling for cell processes and functions. However, the calcium coupling between mitochondria and ER (mito-ER) remains elusive due to the difficulty of precise excitation of localized mito-ER calcium coupling with little interference to other organelles. To study the mito-ER calcium coupling dynamics, we report a noninvasive method of photostimulation by femtosecond laser to excite the mito-ER calcium coupling at single-mitochondrion level. We establish a microscopy and photostimulation system to simultaneously stimulate and observe single mitochondrion continuously in real time, by which a long-term mito-ER calcium coupling is observed after a single short flash of femtosecond-laser stimulation to a tubular structure of a target mitochondrion in a pre-selected live cell. Cytosolic calcium is involved in the mito-ER calcium coupling but the mitochondrial sodium calcium exchanger and the mito-ER distance contribute little to it. Single mito-ER calcium coupling exhibits different dynamics from it excited by biochemical drugs globally. This study provides a precise and noninvasive method to excite calcium dynamics at single organelle level for the study of mitochondria and mito-ER calcium coupling.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has drawn much attention due to its advantages such as safety, convenience, and non-contact. For some movable devices such as intelligent inspection robot, the constant output voltage is very important to ensure its normal operation. In order to improve the system efficiency and steadiness of output voltage, a maximum efficiency tracking and constant voltage charging method is proposed for the dynamic WPT system. In this method, the mutual inductance and optimal input voltage can be estimated accurately no matter the coupling coefficient and equivalent load change or not. The simulation and experimental results have shown that the WPT system realize maximum efficiency tracking and constant voltage charging when the resistance is changed from 10Ω to 5Ω, and the same result was achieved when the mutual inductance is altered from 20μH to 10μH.

Land cover segmentation is an important and challenging task in the field of remote sensing. Even though convolutional neural networks (CNNs) provide great support for semantic segmentation, standard models are still difficult to capture global information and long-range dependencies in remote sensing images. To overcome these limitations, we proposed an attention guided encoder-decoder network with multi-scale context aggregation to achieve more accurate segmentation of land cover. Based on the structure of the encoder-decoder network, we introduce a multi-scale feature fusion module with two attention modules to the top of the encoder. The multi-scale feature fusion module is employed to aggregate multi-scale features and capture global correlations. The attention modules are used to exploit the long-range dependencies and the interdependence between channels from the perspective of space and channel respectively. The experimental results on the GF-2 images show that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance, with an OA of 84.1% and the mIoU of 62.3%. Compared with the baseline network, our method improves the OA by 3.3% and the mIoU by 4.4%. The comparative experiments also demonstrate that the proposed approach can significantly improve the accuracy of land cover segmentation than other compared methods.

Abstract Background Molecular recognition features (MoRFs) are one important type of disordered segments that can promote specific protein-protein interactions. They are located within longer intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), and undergo disorder-to-order transitions upon binding to their interaction partners. The functional importance of MoRFs and the limitation of experimental identification make it necessary to predict MoRFs accurately with computational methods. Results In this study, a new sequence-based method, named as MoRFMPM, is proposed for predicting MoRFs. MoRFMPM uses minimax probability machine (MPM) to predict MoRFs based on 16 features and 3 different windows, which neither relying on other predictors nor calculating the properties of the surrounding regions of MoRFs separately. Comparing with ANCHOR, MoRFpred and MoRFCHiBi on the same test sets, MoRFMPM not only obtains higher AUC, but also obtains higher TPR at low FPR. Conclusions The features used in MoRFMPM can effectively predict MoRFs, especially after preprocessing. Besides, MoRFMPM uses a linear classification algorithm and does not rely on results of other predictors which makes it accessible and repeatable.

Phenolics enriched pomegranate fruit (Pomella®) and red maple leaf (Maplifa®) extracts and their major phenolic constituents have demonstrated beneficial skin effects through the protection of human skin keratinocytes from oxidative-stress-induced damage. However, their mechanisms of protection of cutaneous collagen are still unclear. Herein, the collagen protective effects of Pomella® and Maplifa®, and their major bioactive phytochemicals, namely, punicalagin (PA) and ginnalin A (GA), respectively, were evaluated using enzymatic assays including collagenase, anti-glycation and cell-based models as well as computational methods. The importance of the modulatory effects was validated at the protein level for type I collagen and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) using human-skin-derived keratinocytes. The synergistic collagenase inhibitory effects upon combinations of Pomella® + Maplifa® and PA + GA at a combination ratio of 1:2 and 1:1, respectively, were evaluated using their combination index (CI; a well-established assessment of synergism). Pomella® (50–400 µg/mL), Maplifa® (100–800 µg/mL), PA (50–400 µM), and GA (50–400 µM) dose-dependently inhibited collagenase activity by 26.3–86.3%, 25.7–94.0%, 26.2–94.0%, and 12.0–98.0%, respectively. The CI of the anti-collagenase activity of Pomella® and Maplifa® ranged from 0.53–0.90, while that of PA and GA (12.5/12.5 and 25/25 µM) ranged from 0.66 and 0.69, respectively, suggesting a synergistic inhibitory effect. Interestingly, in the cell-based assays by Western blotting, Pomella® and Maplifa® reduced the protein expression levels of collagen degradation enzymes (MMPs), while simultaneously increasing that of type I collagen in epidermoid carcinoma A431 cells. This is the first report to show that these extracts exert synergistic collagen protective effects. Taken together, these findings provide molecular insights into the usefulness of Pomella® and Maplifa® or their phenolics as bioactive ingredients for skin care products to slow down aging and enhance skin tone.

Backgrounds and Objectives: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has currently become the “first-line choice” for descending aortic pathologies. For pathologies located at the aortic arch, TEVAR with physician-modified fenestration (PMF) has been gained popularity as an alternative choice. However, stent fenestration is an experience-dependent technique and comes with possible adverse events such as misalignment. This study aims to introduce the self-radiopaque PMF (SF), which uses the radiopaque marker as a guiding indicator.Methods: This is a single-center retrospective study of 125 patients who underwent the SF-TEVAR in Second Xiangya Hospital from December 2015 to December 2020. Data include basic clinical information and technique records of SF-TEVAR with follow-up results.Results: According to the SF-TEVAR protocol, we have performed the procedures on 125 patients and obtained an instant success rate of 98.4%. A total of 140 aortic stent-grafts and 44 bridging stents have been implanted in this study. The operation time is 64.6 ± 19.3 min, X-ray exposure time (from first digital subtraction angiography (DSA) to last DSA) is 25.6 ± 14.3 min, and contrast volume is 82.2 ± 22.6 ml. The success rate of PMF alignment is 98.4%. One bailout stent-graft was implanted into the left subclavian artery (LSA) by the chimney technique (0.8%). One fenestration was successfully and immediately corrected after misalignment (0.8%). Large simultaneous fenestration was performed in six patients (4.8%) for the left common carotid artery (LCCA) and LSA and in two patients (1.6%) for IA, LCCA, and LSA. One hundred twenty-two out of 125 patients' LSAs have been kept patent by the technique during the follow-up. The bridging stent group consists of 44 patients who received LSA stents, while the non-bridging stent group includes the other 81 patients. Type I endoleak has occurred in seven patients (5.6%) 1 week after the procedure. During follow-up (23 ± 18 months), survival rate is 95.7% and branch artery patent rate is 97.4%.Conclusions: The SF-TEVAR technique, which utilizes the radiopaque marker in stent-graft as an indication for PMF in TEVAR, seems a likely safe, effective, and efficient procedure that brings acceptable survival rate and branch artery patency rate. SF-TEVAR serves as a progressive alternative method to keep the branch artery patent in aortic arch endovascular reconstruction.

Background: Acute type B aortic dissection is a highly serious aortic pathology. Aortic geometric parameters may be useful variables related to the occurrence of acute type B aortic dissection (aTBAD). The aim of the study is to delineate the alteration in aortic geometric parameters and analyze the specific geometric factors associated with aTBAD.Methods: The propensity score matching method was applied to control confounding factors. The aortic diameter, length, angulation, tortuosity, and type of aortic arch of the aTBAD and control group were retrospectively analyzed via three-dimensional computed tomography imaging created by the 3mensio software (version 10.0, Maastricht, The Netherlands). The geometric variables of true lumen and false lumen in the descending aorta were measured to estimate the severity of aortic dissection. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the significant and specific factors associated with aTBAD occurrence. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to estimate the performance of the model.Results: After propensity score matching, 168 matched pairs of patients were selected. The ascending aorta and aortic arch diameters were dilated, and the ascending aorta and total aorta lengths were elongated in aTBAD group significantly (P < 0.001). The ascending aorta and aortic arch angulations in the aTBAD group were sharper than those of the controls (P = 0.01, P < 0.001, respectively). The aortic arch and total aorta tortuosities were significantly higher in the aTBAD group (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). There were more type III arch patients in the aTBAD group than the controls (67.9 vs. 22.6%). The true lumen angulation was sharper than that in the false lumen (P < 0.01). The true lumen tortuosity was significantly lower than that in the false lumen (P < 0.001). The multivariable models identified that aortic arch angulation, tortuosity, and type III arch were independent and specific geometric factors associated with aTBAD occurrence. The AUC of the multivariable models 1, 2, 3 were 0.945, 0.953, and 0.96, respectively.Conclusions: The sharper angulation and higher tortuosity of aortic arch and type III arch were the geometric factors associated with aTBAD in addition to the ascending aorta elongation and aortic arch dilation. The angulation and tortuosity of the true and false lumens may carry significant clinical implications for the treatment and prognosis of aTBAD.

The genomic context of the mcr-1 gene in Escherichia coli from animal feces has been widely reported. However, less is known about the mcr-1-carrying plasmid characteristics and other functional regions of Escherichia coli isolates from animal organs with lesions. The present study investigated the antimicrobial resistance, population structure, and genetic features of mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli strains isolated from animal organs with lesions. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing indicated that 24 mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli isolates were resistant to at least three or all antimicrobial categories. MLST analysis suggested that the dominant clone complexes (CC) were mainly CC156, CC448, and CC10. In addition, ST10596, a newly discovered sequence type in swine, failed to be classified. Meanwhile, the mcr-1 gene located on the different plasmids was successfully transferred to the recipients, and whole-genome sequencing indicated the mcr-1 gene was embedded in mcr-1-pap2 cassette but not flanked by ISApl1. The mcr-1 gene is located on the chromosome and embedded in Tn6330. Furthermore, NDM-5 was found on the IncX3-type plasmid of J-8. The virB6 and traI gene of type IV secretion system (T4SS) were truncated by IS2 and IS100 and located on the IncX4- and the IncHI2/HI2A/N-type plasmids, respectively. The multidrug-resistant (MDR) region of IncHI2/HI2A/N-type plasmids contained two class 1 integrons (In0, In640) and four composite transposons (Tn4352, Tn6010, cn_4692_IS26, cn_6354_IS26). Overall, 24 mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli isolates in our study showed MDR, or even extensively drug resistant (XDR), and exhibited population diversity. The T4SS gene truncation by the insertion sequence may affect the efficiency of plasmid conjugative transfer. Furthermore, the class 1 integrons and composite transposons in the MDR region of IncHI2/HI2A/n-type plasmid contributed to the multireplicon plasmid formation, the acquisition, and transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs).

p62 protein has been implicated in bone metastasis and is a multifunctional adaptor protein usually correlated with autophagy. Herein, we investigated p62 expression and its prognostic significance in bone metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma, and analyzed whether the mechanism involved depends on autophagy. mRNA and protein expression of p62, LC3B and Beclin 1 were detected by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting, respectively, in fresh bone metastasis tissues (n=6 cases) and normal cancellous bone tissues (n=3 cases). The association between p62 and LC3B expression and patient prognosis was subsequently analyzed in 62 paraffin-embedded bone metastasis specimens by immunohistochemistry assay. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) was employed to downregulate p62 expression in SPC-A-1 and A549 cells. Cell proliferation and migration ability were tested by CCK8, CCF and Transwell assays respectively. Autophagy was induced by Rapamycin or inhibited by Atg 7 knockout/Chloroquine in A549 cells and p62 and LC3II/I expression were analyzed. After subcutaneous inoculation or intracardial injection of A549 cells into nude mice, the effect of p62 downregulation in vivo was analyzed by histopathological examination. The results showed that p62, LC3B and Beclin 1 mRNA and protein were all overexpressed in bone metastasis tissues (all P3), shorter overall survival rates and shorter progression free survival rates compared with patients having lower p62 expression (P=0.014, P=0.003, P=0.048, respectively). Cox regression analysis identified p62 expression as an independent prognostic indicator of overall survival of patients with bone metastasis (P=0.007). In vitro p62 downregulation inhibited SPC-A-1 and A549 cells migration but had no effect on cell proliferation. After autophagy induction or inhibition, p62 expression involved in autophagy flux and changed inconsistently according to the switch of LC3I to LC3II in different autophagy conditions. In vivo p62 downregulation had no effect on growth of subcutaneous tumor. Lung or bone metastasis lesion was not found in all mice model. These findings suggested that p62 overexpression promotes tumor cell invasion out of LC3-dependent autophagy, which could be used a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for bone metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma.

Osteoporosis is a chronic age-related disease. During aging, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) display increased adipogenic, along with decreased osteogenic, differentiation capacity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on the osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation potential of BMSC-derived osteoblasts. Here, we found that the level of CGRP was markedly lower in bone marrow supernatant from aged mice compared with that in young mice. In vitro experiments indicated that CGRP promoted the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs while inhibiting their adipogenic differentiation. Compared with vehicle-treated controls, aged mice treated with CGRP showed a substantial promotion of bone formation and a reduction in fat accumulation in the bone marrow. Similarly, we found that CGRP could significantly enhance bone formation in ovariectomized (OVX) mice in vivo. Together, our results suggested that CGRP may be a key regulator of the age-related switch between osteogenesis and adipogenesis in BMSCs and may represent a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of age-related bone loss.

The subtropical region of East China is characterized by abundant water and temperature resources conducive to crop cultivation, and large areas of lowland have been widely used for agricultural planting. The objectives of the study were to explore feasible methods of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction for rice–wheat rotation systems and to explain the mechanism underlying the effect of drainage on GHG reduction. Shallow ditch (SD) and deep ditch (DD) treatments in the wheat season were set up for drainage to control the paddy soil water content, with conventional non-ditching as the control group (CG). CH4 and N2O emission fluxes were continuously measured, and related soil physical and chemical properties were also measured in this study. The results showed that CH4 emissions from paddy soil accounted for most of the global warming potential (GWP) in the rice–wheat rotation system. Drainage led to a significant reduction in cumulative soil CH4 emissions during the rice and wheat seasons; however, the overall cumulative N2O flux increased significantly. The total GWP produced by SD and DD in the three years was reduced by 58.21% and 54.87%, respectively. The GHG emission intensity (GHGI) of SD and DD declined by 60.13% and 56.40%, respectively. The CH4 emission flux was significantly positively correlated with the 5 cm ground temperature but negatively correlated with the soil redox potential (soil Eh). The drainage decreased the soil water and soil organic matter contents and increased soil pH, which were the mechanisms that reduced the CH4 emissions. The drainage increased the soil nitrogen content, which is the main reason for regulating N2O. The findings indicate that SD and DD not only ensured a stable increase in production but also effectively reduced GHG emissions, and we recommend SD treatment for agricultural production.

This study investigated the evolution of density, grain size, and pore characteristics during the sintering of metal injection molding (MIM) 420, 420 + 0.3C and pre-alloyed 420Nb stainless steel powders. The results show that C promotes the reduction of oxides on the surface of stainless steel, thereby accelerating sintering at 1330 °C, which is the initial sintering stage of MIM 420. MIM 420Nb showed the slowest sintering rate due to the strong binding force between Nb and C. At 1350 °C, the sintering densities of MIM 420 and 420 + 0.3C slightly improved, whereas their grain sizes grew significantly. Scanning electron microscopy images show grain boundary-pore separation, which significantly retarded the grain boundary diffusion mechanism and hence reduced the densification rate. The addition of C accelerated the pore-grain boundary separation; thus MIM 420 + 0.3C showed the lowest density at this temperature among the materials analyzed in this study. Nb suppressed the grain growth rate; thus, MIM 420Nb exhibited the highest density among the three materials. At 1370 °C, MIM 420 + 0.3C reached the highest density owing to the creation of a liquid phase. Theoretical calculations proved that there is a linear relationship between the grain boundary area per unit volume and the interfacial pore area per unit volume. Furthermore, when the ratio of grain size to pore size is 28, the contact probability between the grain boundaries and pores is significantly reduced to approximately 10%, leading to an extremely slow densification rate and a rapid grain growth rate, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Aiming at the problem of a poor separation of tiger nut, soil and grass during harvest, a hoisting device consisting of a combined-type hoisting sieve, vibrating wheels and soil roller was designed in combination with the requirements of the planting and harvesting of tiger nut. Through a theoretical analysis of the movement of the mixture of tiger nut, sand and grass in the process of hoisting, the basic law that affects the soil filter rate was determined, and the parameters affecting the soil-sieving rate were determined, and the hoisting angle, linear hoist speed and range of related parameters of vibrating wheels were obtained. Based on the DEM-MBD method, a simulation model of an excavating and hoisting device was built. With the hoisting angle, linear hoist speed, vibrating frequency and vibrating amplitudes of vibrating wheels as test factors, and the soil-sieving rate as test index, an orthogonal rotating-center combination test with four factors and three levels was carried out. The results showed that the influence of various factors on soil-sieving rate was as follows: vibrating frequency of vibrating wheels > linear hoist velocity > vibrating amplitudes of vibrating wheels > hoisting angle. When the vibrating frequency of the vibrating wheels was 9 Hz, the linear hoist speed was 0.66 m/s, vibrating amplitude of vibrating wheels was 25 mm and hoisting angle was 26°; the maximum value of the soil-sieving rate was 42.5%. The optimized parameters were applied to field test for verification, and the soil-sieving rate of the field test was 44.7%, which was better than the simulation test. The research results can provide a theoretical reference for design optimization and simulation analysis of tiger nut harvesters.

Automated detection of complex animal behaviors remains a challenging problem in neuroscience, particularly for behaviors that consist of disparate sequential motions. Grooming is a prototypical stereotyped behavior that is often used as an endophenotype in psychiatric genetics. Here, we used mouse grooming behavior as an example and developed a general purpose neural network architecture capable of dynamic action detection at human observer-level performance and operating across dozens of mouse strains with high visual diversity. We provide insights into the amount of human annotated training data that are needed to achieve such performance. We surveyed grooming behavior in the open field in 2457 mice across 62 strains, determined its heritable components, conducted GWAS to outline its genetic architecture, and performed PheWAS to link human psychiatric traits through shared underlying genetics. Our general machine learning solution that automatically classifies complex behaviors in large datasets will facilitate systematic studies of behavioral mechanisms.

Pulsed lasers at the near infrared (NIR) range have been widely used in dermatology. Ultrashort pulsed picosecond lasers are found with the specific ability of very effective activation of skin repair and remodeling along with significant photodamage. Femtosecond lasers, with a shorter pulse width, may be a promising alternative to current NIR lasers in clinic. In this study, we performed optical micromachining by a femtosecond laser at 1,030 nm to skin of live mice in two modes of scanning of focused laser and direct irradiation by unfocused laser. The acute and one-day delayed immune molecular responses of the skin to the micromachining are studied by immunofluorescence microscopy of the skin sections. Our data shows the focused laser can activate remodeling of skin without any significant immune responses. In contrast, the direct irradiation by the unfocused laser activate significant immune responses in the deep dermis with high regulation of interleukin. Those results suggest focused femtosecond laser is of good promising potential in activation of skin remodeling and repairing with little immune or physical damage.

The core device of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system is a wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer, among which the arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device has the most superior optical performances. The optical performances of AWG are mainly affected by the structure parameters such as the waveguide spacing, the width and length of the tapered waveguide and the number of arrayed waveguides. Taking the 40-channel AWG as the research object, by combining theory with simulation, this paper analyzed the influence mechanisms and laws of AWG structure parameters on its optical performances including insertion loss, loss non-uniformity, adjacent crosstalk, and 3 dB bandwidth. Then, the sensitivities analysis of AWG optical performance was carried out by using the direct derivation method and the finite difference method in the sensitivities analysis method, so as to obtain the influence degree of each structure parameter on the optical performances. Finally, based on the influence rules and sensitivities of structure parameters on optical performances, this paper adopted some methods to optimize the structure parameters of AWG, and optimized the insertion loss, loss non-uniformity, adjacent crosstalk, and 3 dB bandwidth to about 1 dB, 0.35 dB, −30 dB, and 0.42 nm, respectively. The research methods and conclusions of this paper can provide references for the optimization of optical performances and layout design of other types of AWG.

Herein, powder metallurgy gas-solid nitriding was used to prepare a high-nitrogen Ni-free austenitic stainless steel with more than 1.0 wt.% N. Study of the microstructures and corrosion resistances of the as-prepared samples revealed that the corrosion weight loss, size, number of corrosion pits, and corrosion depth decreased as the N content increased from 1.19 to 1.37 wt.%. The self-corrosion current densities of the alloys were determined from their potentiodynamic polarization curves. The changes in the capacitive arc radius as demonstrated by the Nyquist curves were consistent with the conclusions of the immersion corrosion analysis; that is, a high N content leads to a high corrosion resistance.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), used for energy supply and storage equipment, have been widely applied in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. However, the urgent demand for high energy density batteries and the shortage of lithium resources is driving scientists to develop high-performance materials and find alternatives. Low-volume expansion carbon material is the ideal choice of anode material. However, the low specific capacity has gradually become the shortcoming for the development of LIBs and thus developing new carbon material with high specific capacity is urgently needed. In addition, developing alternatives of LIBs, such as sodium ion batteries and potassium-ion batteries, also puts forward demands for new types of carbon materials. As is well-known, the design of high-performance electrodes requires a deep understanding on the working mechanism and the structural evolution of active materials. On this issue, ex-situ techniques have been widely applied to investigate the electrode materials under special working conditions, and provide a lot of information. Unfortunately, these observed phenomena are difficult to reflect the reaction under real working conditions and some important short-lived intermediate products cannot be captured, leading to an incomplete understanding of the working mechanism. In-situ techniques can observe the changes of active materials in operando during the charge/discharge processes, providing the concrete process of solid electrolyte formation, ions intercalation mechanism, structural evolutions, etc. Herein, this review aims to provide an overview on the characters of carbon materials in alkali ion batteries and the role of in-situ techniques in developing carbon materials.

Objective This study was performed to describe the treatment of aortic arch pathologies with a physician-modified fenestration (PMF) technique in thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Methods From August 2015 to August 2017, 32 patients with aortic arch pathologies underwent TEVAR with the PMF technique. All patients’ clinical data were analyzed with GraphPad Prism 7.0. Results Thirty-four aortic stent-grafts were implanted in 32 patients. The mean proximal diameter of the stent-graft was 32.4 ± 3.4 cm, and the mean length was 170.0 ± 25.2 cm. Twenty-nine PMF procedures were performed to preserve the left subclavian artery (LSA) and three to preserve both the LSA and left common carotid artery. The mean distance between the pathology and LSA was 8.4 ± 4.0 mm. The mean procedure time (from first to last digital subtraction angiography) was 22.8 ± 20.8 min. The mean follow-up time was 8.3 ± 5.3 months. During follow-up, the all-cause survival rate was 83.3% and the patency rate of the branch artery after PMF was 96.0%. Conclusion The PMF technique is a relatively safe, feasible, and time-saving method to preserve the branch artery in TEVAR for aortic arch pathologies. The short- to middle-term result of this technique is satisfactory.

Background Male patients with Marfan syndrome have a higher risk of aortic events and root dilatation compared with females. The role androgens play during Marfan syndrome aneurysm development in males remains unknown. We hypothesized that androgens potentiate transforming growth factor beta induced Erk (extracellular‐signal‐regulated kinase)/Smad activation, contributing to aneurysm progression in males. Methods and Results Aortic diameters in Fbn1C1039G/+ and littermate wild‐type controls were measured at ages 6, 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Fbn1C1039G/+ males were treated with (1) flutamide (androgen receptor blocker) or (2) vehicle control from age 6 to 16 weeks and then euthanized. p‐Erk1/2, p‐Smad2, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity were measured in ascending/aortic root and descending aorta specimens. Fbn1C1039G/+ male and female ascending/aortic root‐derived smooth muscle cells were utilized in vitro to measure Erk/Smad activation and MMP‐2 activity following dihydrotestosterone, flutamide or transforming growth factor beta 1 treatment. Fbn1C1039G/+ males have increased aneurysm growth. p‐Erk1/2 and p‐Smad2 were elevated in ascending/aortic root specimens at age 16 weeks. Corresponding with enhanced Erk/Smad signaling, MMP‐2 activity was higher in Fbn1C1039G/+ males. In vitro smooth muscle cell studies revealed that dihydrotestosterone potentiates transforming growth factor beta‐induced Erk/Smad activation and MMP‐2 activity, which is reversed by flutamide treatment. Finally, in vivo flutamide treatment reduced aneurysm growth via p‐Erk1/2 and p‐Smad2 reduction in Fbn1C1039G/+ males. Conclusions Fbn1C1039G/+ males have enhanced aneurysm growth compared with females associated with enhanced p‐Erk1/2 and p‐Smad2 activation. Mechanistically, in vitro smooth muscle cell studies suggested that dihydrotestosterone potentiates transforming growth factor beta induced Erk/Smad activation. As biological proof of concept, flutamide treatment attenuated aneurysm growth and p‐Erk1/2 and p‐Smad2 signaling in Fbn1C1039G/+ males.

Summary: Wind energy is one of the most cost-effective energy sources available today. Some techniques have been developed to scavenge wind energy, but making use of lower flutter velocity while maintaining high conversion efficiency remains challenging. Here, we report a triboelectric nanogenerator composed of two interacting triboelectric films with four flapping modes, enabling an effective work wind velocity as low as 1.6 ms−1 and a high conversion efficiency of 3.23%, which, to our knowledge, are better than previously reported values of wind energy scavenging. The output performance of B-TENG can be determined by device size and flow velocity; the optimized device exhibits an output voltage, current, and power of 175 V, 43 μA, and 2.5 mW, respectively, with dimensions of 3 × 8 × 2 cm3 at a flow velocity of 8 ms−1. The B-TENG may pave the way for future wind scavenging devices for a range of point-of-use applications.

Facial attribute editing aims to modify face images in the desired manner, such as changing hair color, gender, and age, adding or removing eyeglasses, and so on. Recent researches on this topic largely leverage the adversarial loss so that the generated faces are not only realistic but also well correspond to the target attributes. In this paper, we propose Residual Attribute Generative Adversarial Network (RAG), a novel model to achieve unpaired editing for multiple facial attributes. Instead of directly learning the target attributes, we propose to learn the residual attributes, a more intuitive and understandable representation to convert the original task as a problem of arithmetic addition or subtraction for different attributes. Furthermore, we propose the identity preservation loss, which proves to facilitate convergence and provide better results. At last, we leverage effective visual attention to localize the related regions and preserve the unrelated content during transformation. The extensive experiments on two facial attribute datasets demonstrate the superiority of our approach to generate realistic and high-quality faces for multiple attributes. Visualization of the residual image, which is defined as the difference between the original image and the generated result, better explains which regions RAG focuses on when editing different attributes.

The metal injection molding (MIM) method was applied to manufacture a shaped charge liner (SCL) used for petroleum perforating bombs. Its application could overcome the drawback of heterogeneous density distribution prepared using the traditional powder metallurgy and spinning process. The sintering results showed that because of the limitation in the sintering temperature, the relative density of the W–Cu alloy shaped charge liners prepared by metal injection molding (MIM W–Cu SCLs) ranged from 48.05% at 1050 °C to 52.52% at 1100 °C, which was far below those prepared by spinning. Further increase to higher temperature led to the W–Cu separation, cracks, and distortion of the SCL. The explosive test proved that the shaped charge liners prepared by metal injection molding (MIM SCLs) could achieve comparable or even better penetration performance than those prepared by spinning. The particle size of tungsten played a significant role in the penetration performance in which the sample prepared from a −250-mesh tungsten powder showed the highest penetration depth, which was 18.44% deeper than that of the spinning process. From the observation of ballistic holes, the jet of the MIM SCL was composed of dispersed W–Cu particles without a slug. The diameters of the holes bored by the MIM SCLs were larger than those SCLs produced by spinning, which proved that the MIM SCL jet is noncoherent.
