Search

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE),aboard the COmptOn Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), provided a record of the hard X-ray/low energy gamma ray sky between April 1991 and June 2000. During that time, a catalog of known sources was derived from existing catalogs such as HEAO A-4 (Levine et al. 19841, as well as new transient sources discovered with RATSE and other X-ray monitors operating in the CGRO era. The Earth Occultation Technique (Harmon et al. 2001, astro-ph/0109069) was used to monitor a combination of these sources, mostly galactic, totaling about 175 objects. The catalog will present the global properties of these sources and their probability of detection (>lO mCrab, 20-100 keV) with BATSE. Systematic errors due to unknown sources or background components are included. Cursory analyses to search for new transients (35-80 mCrab in the 20-100 keV band) and super-orbital periods in known binary sources are also presented. Whole mission light curves and associated data production/analysis tools are being delivered to the HEASARC for public use.

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), provided a record of the low-energy gamma-ray sky (approx. 20-1000 keV) between 1991 April and 2000 May (9.1y). BATSE monitored the high energy sky using the Earth occultation technique (EOT) for point sources whose emission extended for times on the order of the CGRO orbital period (approx. 92m) or greater. Using the EOT to extract flux - 2 - information, a catalog of sources using data from the BATSE large area detectors has been prepared. The first part of the catalog consists of results from the all-sky monitoring of 58 sources, mostly Galactic, with intrinsic variability on timescales of hours to years. For these sources, we have included tables of flux and spectral data, and outburst times for transients. Light curves (or flux histories) covering the entire nine mission are being placed on the world wide web. We then performed a deep-sampling of these 58 objects, plus a selection of 121 more objects, combining data from the entire 9.ly BATSE dataset. Source types considered were primarily accreting binaries, but a small number of representative active galaxies, X-ray-emitting stars, and supernova remnants were also included. The sample represents a compilation of sources monitored and/or discovered with BATSE and other high energy instruments between 1991 and 2000, known sources taken from the HEAO 1 A-4 (Levine et al. 1984) and Macomb and Gehrels (1999) catalogs. The deep sample results include definite detections of 82 objects and possible detections of 36 additional objects. The definite detections spanned three classes of sources: accreting black hole and neutron star binaries, active galaxies and supernova remnants. The average fluxes measured for the fourth class, the X-ray emitting stars, were below the confidence limit for definite detection. Flux data for the deep sample are presented in four energy bands: 20-40, 40-70, 70-160, and 160-430 keV. The limiting average flux level (9.1 y) for the sample varies from 3.5 to 20 mCrab (5delta) between 20 and 430 keV, depending on systematic error, which in turn is primarily dependent on the sky location. To strengthen the credibility of detection of weaker sources (approx.5-25 mCrab), we generated Earth occultation images, searched for periodic behavior using FFT and epoch folding methods, and critically evaluated the energy-dependent emission in the four flux bands. The deep sample results are intended for guidance in performing future all-sky surveys or pointed observations in the hard X-ray and low-energy gamma-ray band, as well as more detailed studies with the BATSE EOT.

The observed hard X-ray temporal and spectral characteristics will be displayed for over nine years of BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment) data from the Compton Observatory. These observations were obtained using the Earth occultation technique, a technique that has become increasingly more sensitive and accurate as systematic effects are understood and corrected. The principal objects that are being presented in this study include: GRO J1655-40, GRS 1915+105, Cyg X-3, Cyg X-1, XTE J1550-564, XTE J1859+226, XTE J1748-288, and V4641 Sgr. Light curves and spectral will be presented and discussed in terms of relativistic jet production in these systems.

The 1998 September outburst of the X-ray binary XTE J1550-564 was monitored at X-ray, optical and radio wavelengths. We divide the outburst sequence into five phases and discuss their multi-wavelength properties. The outburst starts with a hard X-ray spike, while the soft X-ray flux rises with a longer timescale. We suggest that the onset of the outburst is determined by an increased mass transfer rate from the companion star, but the outburst morphology is determined by the distribution of specific angular momentum in the accreting matter. The companion in XTE J1550-564 is likely an active magnetic star, with a surface field strong enough to influence the dynamics of mass transfer. We suggest that its magnetic field can create a magnetic bag capable of confining gas inside the Roche lobe of the primary. The impulsive rise in the hard X-rays is explained by the inflow of material with low angular momentum onto the black hole, on a free-fall timescale, when the magnetic confinement breaks down. At the same time, high angular momentum matter, transferred via ordinary Roche-lobe overflow, is responsible for the formation of a disk.

Estimates were made for the proposed geometry of the Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Burst Monitor for sensitivity and number of sources detectable using the BATSE-developed Earth Occultation Technique.

Using the 7.2 years of continuous data now available from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard CGRO, we have measured orbital periods and produced folded lightcurves for 8 High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB). Given the length of the datasets, our determinations are based on many more binary orbits than previous investigations. Thus our source detections have high statistical significance and we are able to follow long-term trends in X-ray output. In particular we focus on two systems: A0538-668 and EXO2030+375 both HMXBs exhibiting Type I outbursts. Recent work on A0538-668 (Alcock et al 1999) reported a 16.65d optical variability due to the orbital period, but only seen during minima of a longer-term variability at 421d. We searched for this signal in the BATSE dataset using an ephemeris derived from Alcock et al ( 1999) & Skinner ( 1982). We found no evidence for such modulation and place an upper limit of 3.0 x 10(exp -3) photon/sq cm.s in the 20-70 keV BATSE energy band , based upon statistical modelling of the signal. EXO2030+375 has exhibited an X-ray active epoch, followed by a quiescent period lasting 2.5yr and since April 1996 has exhibited renewed activity. Previous observations (Reig et a 1998) using RXTE ASM data indicate secondary outbursts occur at apastron passage during the current epoch, but not in the former. We present a lightcurve for the earlier epoch showing convincing evidence for such apastron outbursts. We find apastron outbursts in 3 sources, all having orbital periods greater than 41d. No such signal is conclusively detected in the more rapidly orbiting systems studied.

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) is successfully being used as an all-sky hard X-ray monitor. The experiment consists of a set of eight uncollimated detectors sensitive to photons in the 20 keV to 2 MeV range. Since CGRO orbits the Earth at an altitude of about 450 km, about 33% of the sky, as viewed with BATSE, is covered by the Earth at any given time. The entire sky is subject to Earth occultation for some portion of CGRO's 52 day precession period. When a source sets below or rises above the Earth's limb, atmospheric attenuation produces step-like features in the BATSE data. The observed change in count rate in several energy bands provides a measurement of the source intensity and spectrum without sophisticated background models. These occultation features are used to locate and monitor astrophysical sources with BATSE when the source signal can be separated from the detector background. Examples of step searches, spectra, light curves, and transform imaging are presented.

Comptonization in the corona of an X-ray binary may reduce significantly the flux in the observed soft component of its X-ray spectrum. There fore the apparent inner disk radius inferred from the observed soft component may change in accordance to the fraction of the disk emission scattered into the hard component. We have developed a simple numerical model for carrying out the radiative transfer correction, in order to determine the original disk emission before the Comptonization in the hot corona. Applying this model to the extensive monitoring data of several black hole X-ray binaries with RXTE, we have found that most of the previous 1 y reported inner disk radius variations may be explained as due to this radiative transfer effect in the corona. We thus conclude that there is currently no evidence for significant inner disk boundary movement during the outbursts of these black hole X-ray binaries we have studied with the RXTE data.: GROJ1655-40, XTEJ1550-564, XTEJ1748-288 and XTEJ2012+381.

One year after its discovery, the Bursting Pulsar (GRO J1744-28) went into outburst again, displaying the hard X-ray bursts and pulsations that make this source unique. We report on BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment) observations of both the persistent and burst emission for this second outburst and draw comparisons with the first. The second outburst was smaller than the first in both duration and peak luminosity. The persistent flux, burst peak flux, and burst fluence were all reduced in amplitude by a factor of approximately 1.7. Despite these differences, the two outbursts were very similar with respect to the burst occurrence rate, the durations and spectra of bursts, the absence of spectral evolution during bursts, and the evolution of the ratio alpha of average persistent to burst luminosity. Although no spectral evolution was found within individual bursts, we find evidence for a small (20%) variation of the spectral temperature during the course of the second outburst.

Intensive searches across the electromagnetic spectrum have shown that transient X-ray binary systems exhibit properties similar to the central engines of AGNs. Having proven that accretion disks are present in both types of systems, it is now the task to determine the accretion physics which brings about the observed phenomena. The galactic superluminal transient sources, which are strongly suspected of containing black holes, are particularly attractive for studying state changes, jets, quasi-periodic behavior, and flaring/outburst behavior on timescales a million times shorter than those of their extragalactic counterparts. The galactic sources GRS 1915+105, GRO J1655-40 and more recently-detected transients such as XTE J1748-288 have demonstrated a rich variety of spectral and temporal behaviors. I review some of these observations from the perspective of high energy astronomy with emphasis on recent data from the Compton Observatory and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer.

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has been detecting and monitoring point sources in the high energy sky since 1991. Although BATSE is best known for gamma ray bursts, it also monitors the sky for longer-lived sources of radiation. Using the Earth occultation technique to extract flux information, a catalog is being prepared of about 150 sources potential emission in the large area detectors (20-1000 keV). The catalog will contain light curves, representative spectra, and parametric data for black hole and neutron star binaries, active galaxies, and super-nova remnants. In this preview, we present light curves for persistent and transient sources, and also show examples of what type of information can be obtained from the BATSE Earth occultation database. Options for making the data easily accessible as an "on line" WWW document are being explored.

The results of spectral modeling of the data for a series of RXTE observations and four ASCA observations of GRO J1655-40 are presented. The thermal Comptonization model is used instead of the power-law model for the hard component of the two-component continuum spectra. The previously reported dramatic variations of the apparent inner disk radius of GRO J1655-40 during its outburst may be due to the inverse Compton scattering in the hot corona. A procedure is developed for making the radiative transfer correction to the fitting parameters from RXTE data and a more stable inner disk radius is obtained. A practical process of determining the color correction (hardening) factor from observational data is proposed and applied to the four ASCA observations of GRO J1655-40. We found that the color correction factor may vary significantly between different observations and the finally corrected physical inner disk radius remains reasonably stable over a large range of luminosity and spectral states.

The x-ray transient XTE Jl550-564 (IAUC 7008) was detected in Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) data beginning on Jan. 21. As of Jan. 23. the one-day averaged flux was 300 mCrab (+/- 20 percent, 20-100 keV), with a hard spectrum (power-law photon-number index -2.3 +/- 0.2). This is a reflare in hard x-rays, following the primary outburst in 1998 Sept.-Oct. (IAUC 7010). The source has been active in soft x-rays (2-12 keV) since about Dec. 18, according to observations by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ASM.

We have used the Fourier cross spectra of GRO J1719-24. as obtained with BATSE, to estimate the phase lags between the X-ray flux variations in the 20-,50 and 50-100 keV energy bands as a function of Fourier frequency in the interval 0.002-0.488 Hz. Our analysis covers the entire approximately 80 day X-ray outburst of this black-hole candidate, following the first X-ray detection on 1993 September 25. The X-ray variations in the 50-100 keV band, lag those in the 20-50 keV energy band by an approximately constant phase difference of 0.072 +/- 0.010 rad in the frequency interval 0.02-0.20 Hz. The time lags of GRO J1719-24 decrease with frequency as a power law, with index 1.04 +/- 0.13 for frequencies >/= 0.01 Hz. These results are discussed together with those obtained in recent similar studies of the black-hole candidates Cyg X-1 and GRO J0422+32.

A new class of X-ray sources was clearly established with the discovery of highly relativistic radio jets from the galactic sources GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655-40. Both of these objects have given us a broader view of black holes and the formation of jets, yet they also show the complexity of the accretion environment near relativistic objects. The fast apparent motion of the jets, their luminosity and variability, high energy spectrum, and approximate scaling to the behavior of active galactic nuclei, certainly warrant the description 'microquasar". I present a review of the observational data on these sources, and discuss where we stand on a physical picture of GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655-40 as taken from multi-wavelength studies. I also point out other galactic sources which share some of the properties of the microquasars, and what to look for as a high energy "signature' in future observations.

We have studied the hard X-ray variability of the soft X-ray transient GRO J0422+32 with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) in the 20-100 keV energy band. Our analysis covers 180 days following the first X-ray detection of the source on 1992 August 3, fully covering its primary and secondary X-ray outburst. We computed power density spectra (PDSS) in the 20-50, 50-100, and 20-100 keV energy bands., in the frequency interval 0.002-0.488 Hz. The PDSs of GRO J0422+32 are approximately flat up to a break frequency and decay as a power law above, with index about 1. During the first 70 days of the X-ray outburst, the PDSs of GRO J0422+32 show a significant QPO Peak near about 0.2 Hz, superposed on the power-law tail. The break frequency of the PDSs obtained during the primary X-ray outburst of GRO J0422+32 occurs at 0.041+/-0.006 Hz; during the secondary outburst the break is at 0.081q0.01.5 Hz. The power density at the break ranged between 44 and 89% Hz(exp -1/2) 20-100 keV). The canonical anticorrelation between the break frequency and the power density at the break, observed in Cyg X-1 and other BHCs in the low state, is not observed in the PDSs of GRO J0422+32. We compare our results with those of similar variability studies of Cyg X-1. The relation between the spectral slope and the amplitude of the X-ray variations of GRO J0422+32 is similar to that of Cyg X-1.

Cyg X-3 is an unusual X-ray binary which shows remarkable correlative behavior between the hard X-ray, soft X-ray, and the radio. We present an analysis of these long term light curves in the context of spectral changes of the system. This analysis will also incorporate a set of pointed RXTE observations made during a period when Cyg X-3 made a transition from a quiescent radio state to a flaring state (including a major flare) and then returned to a quiescent radio state.

Although no spectral evolution was found within individual bursts, we find evidence for a small (20%) variation of the spectral temperature during the course of the second outburst.

A multi-year light curve of the low mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, is constructed based on the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory (CGRO) Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) Spectroscopy Detector (SD) data in the nominal energy range of 10-20 keV. A detailed discussion is given of the reduction process of the BATSE/SD data. Corrections to the SD measurements are made for off-axis pointings, spectral and bandpass changes, and differences in the eight SD sensitivities. The resulting 4.4 year Sco X-1 SD light curve is characterized in terms of the time scales over which various types of emission changes occur. This light curve is then compared with Sco X-1 light curves obtained by Axiel 5, the BATSE Large Area Detectors (LADs), and the RXTE all-sky monitor (ASM). Coincident temporal coverage by the BATSE/SD and RXTE/ASM allows a direct comparison of the behavior of Sco X-1 over a range of high energies to be made. These ASM light curves are then used to discuss model constraints on the Sco X-1 system.

We identify the periodic transient hard X-ray source GRO J1849-03 with the transient x-ray pulsar GS 1843-02 = X1845-024 based on the detection of x-ray outbursts from X1845-024 coincident with hard x-ray outbursts of GRO J1849-03. Based on its spin period of 94.8 s and its orbital period of 241 days, we classify the system as a Be/X-ray binary.

Using CGRO/BATSE hard X-ray data and GHz radio monitoring data from the Green Bank Interferometer (GBI), we have performed a long term study (approximately 1800 days) of the unusual X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 resulting in the discovery of a remarkable relationship between the two wavelength bands. We find that quiescent radio states are strongly anticorrelated with the intensity of the hard X-ray emission. With the onset of a flaring state the relationship switches to a correlation. This is most easily seen in the larger (> or = 1 Jy) flares where the preflare quenched radio emission is accompanied by a very low hard X-ray intensity, and recovery of the hard X-ray flux during the radio flare. The injection of plasma into the radio jets, associated with Cyg X-3, can be directly related to changes in the hard X-ray emission, and suggests the possibility of accretion-related and jet-related components of the high energy emission.

We report radio (VLA and ATCA), soft X-ray (RXTE ASM), and hard X-ray (CGRO BATSE) observations of a 1998 outburst in the recurring X-ray transient 4U 1630-47 where radio emission was detected for the first time. The radio observations identify the position of 4U 1630-47 to within 1". Because the radio emission is optically thin with a spectral index of approximately -0.6 during the rise and approximately -1 during the peak and decay of the initial radio event, the emission is probably coming from an optically thin radio jet ejected over a period of time. The 20-100 keV emission first appeared 1998 January 28 (MJD 50841), the 2-12 keV emission first appeared February 3 (MJD 50847), and the first radio emission was detected February 12.6 (MJD 50856.6). The rise of the radio emission probably began about February 7 (MJD 50851) when the X-rays were in a very hard, fluctuating hardness state, just before changing to a softer, more stable hardness state.

Other galactic sources which share some of the properties of the microquasars, and what to look for as a high energy "signature" in future observations is also discussed.

We present new BATSE earth occultation observations of the 25 keV-1.8 MeV spectrum and variability of Cygnus X-1 made between August 1993 and May 1994. We observed that the normal soft gamma ray spectrum (gamma2) of Cygnus X-1 has two components: a Comptonized part seen below 300 keV, and a high-energy tail in the 0.3 - 2 MeV range. We interpret it in terms of a two-layer region, consisting of a high-energy core (with an equivalent electron temperature of approximately 210-250 keV) near the event horizon, embedded in an about 50 keV corona. In this scenario, the observed 25-300 keV photons were produced by Compton scattering of soft photons (about 0.5 keV) by the hot electrons in the outer corona. These same hard x rays were further up-scattered by a population of energetic electrons in the inner core, producing the spectral tail above 300 keV. Cygnus X-1 went through an extended sequence of transitions between August 1993 and May 1994, when the 45-140 keV flux first decreased steadily from approximately gamma2 to roughly one-quarter of its intensity over a period of about 140 days. The flux remained at this low level for about 40 days before returning, swiftly (approximately 20 days) to approximately the initial gamma2 level. During the transition, the spectrum evolved to a shape consistent with either a power law with photon index of about 2.6 or a single temperature Compton model with electron temperature kT = 110 +/- 11 keV, and optical depth t = 0.40 +/- 0.06, and then returned essentially to the original gamma2 spectrum at the end of the active period. The overall cooling of the system during the low flux period may be due to an increase in the soft photon population which effectively quenched the hot electrons in these regions through Compton scattering.

The burst and transient source experiment (BATSE) survey of the high energy emission from supernova remnants is reported on. The ability of BATSE to continuously monitor the entire sky in the 20 keV to 2 MeV energy range enables a large group of remnants to by studied at high energies. Preliminary analysis indicates the likely detection of several supernova remnants other than the Crab nebula. Among these are MSH 15-52, Vela, Cas A and possibly HB 9. The techniques employed are discussed together with the status of the survey and its limitations.

Using the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO)/burst and transient search experiment (BATSE) hard X-ray data together with GHz radio monitoring data, a long term study was performed on the unusual X-ray binary Cyg X-3. This study resulted in the discovery of a relationship between the two wavebands. The combined data show that the radio emission is linked to the hard X-ray production. Radio flares, preflare low radio states and quiescence radio emission can be associated with changes in the hard X-ray intensity. Jet production is directly related to changes in the hard X-ray emission.

The operation of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO)/burst and transient source experiment (BATSE) continues to provide data for inclusion into a data base for the analysis of long term variability in bright, hard X-ray sources. The all-sky capability of BATSE provides up to 30 flux measurements/day for each source. The long baseline and the various rising and setting occultation flux measurements allow searches for periodic and quasi-periodic signals with periods of between several hours to hundreds of days to be conducted. The preliminary results from an analysis of the hard X-ray variability in 24 of the brightest BATSE sources are presented. Power density spectra are computed for each source and profiles are presented of the hard X-ray orbital modulations in some X-ray binaries, together with amplitude modulations and variations in outburst durations and intensities in recurrent X-ray transients.
