The imperative need to produce safe foodstuffs using environmentally sustainable practices has highlighted the incorporation of legumes in human and animal diets as an emerging nutritional staple. Since legumes comprise a family of plants known to display an extensive agricultural diversity with significant bioactivities, we report herein the exploitation outcome of the nutritional and bio-functional content of hay, derived from the post-harvest aerial parts of eight novel-improved Greek cultivars belonging to the following six taxa: Larthyrus sativus L., Medicago sativa L., Cicer arietinum L., Pisum sativum L., Vicia faba L., and Phaseolus vulgaris L. In specific, the phytochemical content of their hay extracts was screened against the presence of 37 fatty acids and 67 polyphenols using, respectively, GC-FID and LC-MS/MS instruments, while the determination of their total phenolic and tannin contents was achieved with spectrophotometric methods. In this respect, the presence of 26 different fatty acids was detected of which the acids linoleic, linolenic and palmitic were traced in all extracts in concentrations exceeding the 10 mg/g, while the oleic acid was determined as the major component of C. arietinum (77.58 mg/g), V. faba (36.11 mg/g), and L. sativus (12.89 mg/g) extracts. In addition, 30 different phenolics were traced as extracts’ components with the most abundant the molecule of isoquercetin, which was present in six extracts and isoliquiritigenin, calycosin, and chlorogenic acid which were detected in five extracts. Finally, the antioxidant properties of the extracts were evaluated by performing both DPPH• and FRAP assays, which highlighted the V. faba extract as the most potent in both tests, followed by the extracts of P. sativum and P. vulgaris. Results herein are indicative of the significant advances achieved, for the improvement of investigated plant cultivars with respect to their utilization as nutritional crops, since these novel cultivars hays have been found to contain significant amounts of essential nutrients in the form of fatty acids along with bioactive ingredients in the form of polyphenols, while simultaneously they were determined as deprived of tannins that constitute essential anti-nutritional factors.

ABSTRACT: In the present experiment, 10 horned and 10 disbudded mid-lactating Brown Swiss cows were included in a crossover feeding trial with a hay or hay and concentrate diet. The effects of dietary neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content and horn status on thermoregulatory responses under thermoneutral and short-term heat stress conditions were studied, as both are considered to ease the cow's thermoregulation under an environmental heat load. Cows received either ad libitum hay and alfalfa pellets (85:15, C−, NDF content: 41.0%) or restricted amounts of hay and concentrate (70:30, C+, NDF content: 34.5%). The level of restriction applied with the C+ diet was determined from pre-experimental ad libitum intakes, ensuring that both diets provided the same intake of net energy for lactation (NEL). For data collection, cows were housed in respiration chambers for 5 d. The climatic conditions were 10°C and 60% relative humidity (RH), considered thermoneutral (TN) conditions (temperature-humidity index (THI): 52) for d 1 and 2, and 25°C and 70% RH, considered heat stress (HS) conditions (THI: 74), for d 4 and 5. On d 3, the temperature and RH were increased gradually. Compared with TN, HS conditions increased the water intake, skin temperature, respiration and heart rates, and endogenous heat production. They did not affect body temperature, feed intake, or milk production. Lowering dietary fiber content via concentrate supplementation lowered methane and increased carbon dioxide production. It did not mitigate physiological responses to HS. Although the responses of horned and disbudded cows were generally similar, the slower respiration rates of horned cows under HS conditions indicate a possible, albeit minor, role of the horn in thermoregulation. In conclusion, future investigations on nutritional strategies must be conducted to mitigate mild heat stress.

The forage kochia, Kochia prostrata is used in agriculture as a high-quality pasture plant, however, it has not shown itself to be a stable pasture-haymaking plant. Therefore, in this study, a new direction was chosen for using forage kochia as fodder, i.e., using it for the production of fruit and fodder products that are more nutritious than its hay. The study aimed to determine the influence of soil and climatic conditions on the alteration in the chemical composition and nutritional value of fruit and fodder products, hay, and straw of the forage kochia. The study was carried out in the desert zone of the Atyrau region, Western Kazakhstan with annual precipitation of 130.2 mm. Experiments in 2016 and 2017 were established on meadow-brown soils, and in 2020 on alluvial-meadow soils. The conducted studies have shown that the content of fodder units and protein in fruit and fodder products is much higher than that of hay (0.88 versus 0.65 fodder units and 21.80 g versus 17.25 g protein), and also much higher than those of its straw, which are 0.39 fodder units and 11.21 g, respectively. Natural forage plants of the desert of Western Kazakhstan are unproductive (2-3 kg ha-1) and nutritionally poor. As an alternative, it is proposed to produce fruit-based fodder of forage kochia, a new type of high-quality, nutritionally balanced feed, 10 or more times (39 kg ha-1) superior in productivity to natural hayfields and pastures.

Probiotics can act as an alternative to antibiotics in animal feeding, but their use is minimal due to their expensive production. Dry grass is rich with bacteria beneficial for animal feeding and can be used as a probiotic. However, data about the quantitative dependence of the grass microbiome on environmental factors and seasons remain insufficient for preparing “grass-meal-based probiotics”. Four grass samples were collected in two geographically remote regions of Russia; their microbiome was characterized by metagenomic sequencing of 16S rDNA libraries and microbiological seeding, and biological testing of the grass meal was carried out on 6 groups of birds containing 20 Ross 308 cross broilers each for a period of 42 days. The positive control group (PC) obtained 16–25 mg/mL toltrazuril (coccidiostatic agent) and 0.5 mL/L liquid antibiotic enrostin (100 mg/mL ciprofloxacin and 106 MU/mL colistin sulfate in the commercial preparation) within the drinking water, while the negative control group (NC) obtained no medicines. Four experimental groups were fed the diet supplemented with 1% grass meal over the period of 7–42 days of life; no commercial medicines were used here. A spontaneous infection with Eimeria was registered in the NC control groups, which caused the loss of 7 chickens. No losses were registered in the PC group or the two experimental groups. In two other experimental groups, losses of coccidiosis amounted to 10% and 15%, respectively. All specimens of the grass meal demonstrated a significant effect on the average body weight gain compared to NC. Taken together, these observations support the hypothesis that the grass meal may substitute toltrazuril for protecting the chickens from parasitic invasion and increase average daily weight gain (ADG) as effectively as the antibiotic enrostin.

ABSTRACTDiet modulates the rumen microbiota, which in turn can impact the animal performance. The rumen microbiota is increasingly recognized for its crucial role in regulating the growth and meat quality of the host. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which the rumen microbiome influences the fatty acid and amino acid profiles of lambs in the grass feeding system remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different native grass-based diets on animal performance, meat quality, fatty acid compositions, amino acid profiles, and rumen microbiota of lamb. Seventy-two Ujumqin lambs were randomly assigned into three treatments according to the initial body weight (27.39 ± 0.51 kg) and age (6 months ± 6 days). The lambs received three diets: (i) non-pelleted native grass hay with 40% concentrate diet; the native grass and concentrate were fed individually; (ii) pelleted native grass hay with 40% concentrate diet (PHLC); (iii) pelleted native grass hay with 60% concentrate diet (PHHC). The results showed that among the three groups, the PHHC and PHLC diets had markedly (P < 0.05) higher average daily gain and pH45 min, respectively. All amino acid levels were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in the PHHC diet than in the PHLC diet. The principal coordinate analysis of the ruminal microbiota indicated the markedly distinct separation (P = 0.001) among the three groups. In addition, the correlation analysis showed that the Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Prevotellaceae_UCG-003, Succinivibrio, and Succiniclasticum were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with most of the fatty acid and amino acid profiles. The correlation analysis of the association of microbiome with the meat quality provides us with a comprehensive understanding of the composition and function of the rumen microbial community, and these findings will contribute to the direction of future research in lamb.IMPORTANCEDiet modulates the gut microbiome, which in turn impact the meat quality, yet few studies investigate the correlation between the rumen microbiome and the fatty acid profile of meat. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of offering free-choice hay to cows during the first 5 d immediately after calving on feed intake, milk yield, plasma metabolites, serum inflammatory markers, rumination, gut permeability, and colon gene expression. It was hypothesized that cows offered free-choice hay would have lower gut permeability, lower inflammation, and higher milk production, compared with cows not offered hay. Thirty-two multiparous cows were fed a closeup total mixed ration (TMR; 21.5% starch, 32.1% forage neutral detergent fiber [NDF] on a dry matter basis) until calving. In the postpartum period, all cows were fed a fresh cow TMR (26.8% starch and 23.4% forage NDF) from calving until 21 DIM, and were assigned randomly to receive 1 of 2 treatments as follows: (1) free-choice timothy hay (61.6% NDF; 9.6% crude protein), offered outside of the TMR in a separate manger, for the first 5 d postpartum (FCH; n = 20), or 2) no free-choice hay (NH; n = 12). The FCH cows tended to have lower serum haptoglobin concentration on d 3, compared with NH (0.95 vs. 1.52 mg/mL). Within the FCH group, cows with greater hay intake had a smaller increase in serum amyloid A from d 1 to 3 after calving (r = 0.37), and tended to have a smaller increase in serum haptoglobin concentration (r = 0.36). Cows in the FCH group had a lower ratio of starch intake (kg) to forage NDF intake (kg) on d 1 and 2, compared with NH (0.91 vs. 1.14 ± 0.03), and cows that had a lower starch:forage NDF ratio tended to have a smaller increase in serum haptoglobin concentration from d 1 to 3 after calving (r = 0.32). Cows in the FCH group had lower TMR dry matter intake (DMI; 15.0 vs. 17.1 ± 0.93 kg/d) and lower total DMI (TMR + hay DMI; 15.9 vs. 17.1 ± 0.87 kg/d), from d 1 to 5 when free-choice hay was offered, compared with NH. However, the hay treatment did not affect plasma energy metabolite concentration, gut permeability, colon gene expression, milk yield, rumination time, or change in body weight or body condition score. Overall, these findings suggest that offering free-choice hay for the first 5 d after calving may reduce serum inflammatory marker concentration, but milk yield may not increase, due to lower intake. Objective: The aim of this research was to explore the effects of dietary substitution of alfalfa hay by amaranth hay on production performance, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, serum biochemical parameters and antioxidant ability in dairy cows. Methods: A total of 45 healthy Holstein cows with same parity and similar milk yield and body weight were randomly divided into 3 groups: control diet without amaranth hay (CON) or 50% and 100% alfalfa hay replaced by an equal amount of amaranth hay (dry matter basis, AH1 and AH2, respectively). All the cows were fed regularly 3 times a day at 06:30, 14:30, and 22:30 and had free access to water. The experiment lasted for 60 d. Results: The dry matter intake of CON and AH1 groups was higher (p<0.05) than that of AH2 group. Compared with AH1 group, the milk yield of AH2 group was reduced (p<0.05). Moreover, dietary substitution of alfalfa hay by amaranth hay increased (p<0.05) milk fat, ammonia nitrogen and acetate concentrations. However, the crude protein digestibility of AH2 group was lower (p<0.05) than that of CON group, while an opposite tendency of serum urea nitrogen was found between two groups. The neutral detergent fiber digestibility of AH1 group was increased (p<0.05) when compared to AH2 group. Amaranth hay treatment increased (p<0.05) the serum concentration of glutathione peroxidase in dairy cows. Compared with CON group, the malonaldehyde activity of AH1 group was decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: Dietary replacing alfalfa hay with amaranth hay (50% ratio) in dairy cows did not affect production performance but improved their antioxidant ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orchard meadows are biodiversity hotspots, as the understory often consists of species-rich lowland hay meadows. Due to the low energy density of the grass, it is not suitable as feed, but the energetic utilisation of cuttings from orchard meadows for biogas production could facilitate the protection of these semi-natural grasslands. Here, lowland hay meadows and extensively used orchards were investigated to assess their potential for anaerobic digestion in biogas plants. Aboveground biomass was harvested weekly from three lowland hay meadows differing in conservation statuses and analysed for cell wall components (aNDF, ADF, and ADL), nutritional values (XF, XL, XP), and methane formation potential by anaerobic digestion. Further, orchard meadows were harvested twice during summer and analysed in the same way. Specific methane yield decreased linearly with cutting dates from 0.325 m3 kg−1(oDM) to 0.237 m3 kg−1(oDM). The cumulated area-related methane yields of the orchards ranged from 818 m3 ha−1 to 1036 m3 ha−1. Specific methane yields were linearly correlated with XL, aNDF, ADF, and ADL. Background: Land management change towards intensive grazing has been shown to alter plant and pollinator communities and the structure of plant-pollinator interactions in different ways across the world. Land-use intensification in Eastern Europe is shifting highly diverse, traditionally managed hay meadows towards intensive pastures, but few studies have examined how this influences plant-pollinator networks. We hypothesized that the effects of intensive grazing on networks will depend on how plant communities and their floral traits change. Methods: We investigated plant and pollinator diversity and composition and the structure of plant-pollinator interactions near Sibiu, Romania at sites that were traditionally managed as hay meadows or intensive pastures. We quantified the identity and abundance of flowering plants, and used transect walks to observe pollinator genera interacting with flowering plant species. We evaluated the effects of management on diversity, composition and several indices of network structure. Results: Pollinator but not plant diversity declined in pastures and both plant and pollinator taxonomic composition shifted. Functional diversity and composition remained unchanged, with rather specialized flowers having been found to dominate in both hay meadows and pastures. Apis mellifera was found to be the most abundant pollinator. Its foraging preferences played a crucial role in shaping plant-pollinator network structure. Apis mellifera thus preferred the highly abundant Dorycnium herbaceum in hay meadows, leading to hay meadows networks with lower Shannon diversity and interaction evenness. In pastures, however, it preferred less abundant and more generalized flower resources. With pollinators being overall less abundant and more generalized in pastures, we found that niche overlap between plants was higher. Discussion: With both hay meadows and pastures being dominated by plant species with similar floral traits, shifts in pollinator preferences seem to have driven the observed changes in plant-pollinator interaction networks. We thus conclude that the effects of grazing on pollinators and their interactions are likely to depend on the traits of plant species present in different management types as well as on the effects of grazing on plant community composition. Introduction: The effect of dietary fiber on pig production has been extensively evaluated. Inspired by observations of the diet of wild, young piglets, this study aimed to examine the possibility of feeding grass hay to suckling piglets besides concentrated creep feed. Methods: The sow-nursed piglets in this study were divided into two groups based on balanced sow parities. The control group (CON, n = 7 sows) only received a regular, concentrated creep feed, while the treatment piglets (GH, n = 8 sows) were also provided with chopped grass hay from 2 days of age until weaning (28 days). At weaning, one piglet with a median weight was selected from each litter for post-mortem evaluation. Subsequently, six pigs around median weight per sow were grouped into nursery pens and monitored for their feed intake and body weight gain until 9 weeks of age. Results and discussion: Piglets in GH consumed, on average, 57 g of grass hay per piglet during the entire lactation period. The emptied weight of the small and large intestine was significantly greater in GH (280 vs. 228 g, 88.8 vs. 79.3 g, respectively, p < 0.05), and the length of the large intestine was stimulated by the grass hay (164 vs. 150 cm, p < 0.05). Morphologically, the villus height in the jejunum was higher in GH (p < 0.05). In the large intestine, the crypt depth of the mid-colon was lower in GH. Moreover, the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations in the cecum were increased in GH compared to CON (1,179 vs. 948 µmol/g dry matter, p < 0.05), whereas in the colon, SCFA concentrations were lower in CON (341 vs. 278 µmol/g dry matter, p < 0.05). There was no major impact of grass hay inclusion on the colonic microbiota composition. Only a trend was observed for a lower inverse of the classical Simpson (InvSimpon) index and a higher abundance of Lactobacillus genera in GH. After weaning, no significant differences in feed intake and body weight gain were observed. In conclusion, supplementing the grass hay to suckling piglets led to alterations in intestinal morphology, increased SCFA fermentation in proximal sections of large intestine, stimulation of gastrointestinal tract growth, and subtle modifications in colonic microbiota. Simple Summary: Due to several factors including persistent drought conditions and the increased occurrence and severity of fire on rangeland, there is an increased need for the use of alternative forages to meet the nutrient requirements of ruminants raised in extensive grazing systems. However, information on the nutritive value of alternative forages like Eragrostis teff as influenced by harvest maturity, and the best supplementation strategies that complement and improve utilization of those forages, is still lacking. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effects of harvest maturity of teff hay (early- compared to late-heading stage of maturity) and supplemental energy sources (corn grain compared to beet pulp at 0.5% of body weight) on nutrient intake and digestibility and nitrogen utilization in beef heifers. Delaying the harvest of teff hay resulted in a decrease in nutrient supply, which was not attenuated by feeding either supplemental corn grain or beet pulp. Nitrogen retention was also negative regardless of harvest maturity, and this potentially indicates that there might be a need to provide both energy and protein supplements to improve nutrient supply and, thus, growth performance when feeding teff hay to beef cattle. The phenological stage of maturity of grasses and supplementation program can impact forage utilization in grazing beef cattle. However, the potential interaction between harvest maturity of Eragrostis tef (teff) hay and energy supplement source was yet to be fully evaluated. Therefore, our objective was to determine the effects of harvest maturity of teff hay and supplemental energy sources on nutrient intake, apparent total-tract nutrient digestion, nitrogen (N) utilization, and ruminal fermentation characteristics in beef heifers. A split-plot design with teff hay harvest maturity as the whole plot and supplemental energy source as the subplot was administered in a three-period (21 d), three × three Latin square design. Six crossbred beef heifers (804 ± 53.6 kg of body weight; BW) were allocated to two harvest maturities (early- (EH]) or late-heading (LH)) and to two supplemental energy sources (no supplement (CON), or rolled corn grain or beet pulp pellet fed at 0.5% of BW). Data were analyzed using SAS. There was no harvest maturity × energy supplement interaction. Although harvest maturity had no impact on total dry matter intake (DMI), crude protein (CP) intake was greater (p < 0.01) for EH than LH heifers. Total intakes of dry (DM) and organic matter (OM) were also greater (p < 0.01) for supplemented than CON heifers, whereas acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake was greater for beet pulp heifers compared to heifers fed the CON diet and supplemental corn grain. Harvest maturity had no impact on ruminal pH. However, mean ruminal pH was lower (p = 0.04), duration pH < 6.2, and molar proportions of butyrate and branched-chain fatty acids were greater (p ≤ 0.049) for heifers fed corn grain compared to CON and beet pulp diets. Heifers fed EH hay had greater (p ≤ 0.02) apparent total-tract DM, OM, CP, NDF, and ADF digestibility than heifers fed LH hay. Although there was no supplemental energy effect on microbial nitrogen (N) flow, it was greater (p < 0.01) for EH than LH heifers. Apparent N retention, which did not differ, was negative across all diets. In summary, delaying the harvest of teff hay from the EH to LH stage of maturity compromised nutrient supply, which was not attenuated by feeding supplemental corn grain and beet pulp at 0.5% of diet DM. Because N retention was negative across harvest maturity, there might be a need to provide both energy and protein supplements to improve growth performance when feeding teff hay to beef cattle. Cactus pear is used in large proportions in diets for small ruminants in semiarid regions. However, its exclusive use is not recommended due to the low fiber and crude protein content and the high water and mineral content, leading to metabolic disorders, low dry matter intake, and weight loss. The use of mixed cactus silage associated with protein and fibrous sources seeks to overcome the deficits in dry matter, fiber and crude protein, aiming to improve the nutritional quality of the diets that will be offered to ruminants. Thus, the use of gliricidia hay in cactus pear silages could represent an important alternative to improve the nutritional and fermentative characteristics of the ensiled material. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the fermentation dynamics, nutritional characteristics, and aerobic stability of mixed silages of cactus pear combined with different levels of gliricidia hay. This was a completely randomized experimental design with five treatments and five repetitions. The treatments consisted of different levels of inclusion of gliricidia hay (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% on a dry matter basis) in the composition of mixed cactus pear silages. The inclusion of gliricidia hay in the composition of mixed silages of cactus pear resulted in a quadratic effect for dry matter recovery, pH, NH3-N, buffering capacity, aerobic stability, ether extract, P, K, Na, and Zn (p < 0.05). There was a reduction in density, effluent losses, maximum pH, mineral matter, non-fiber carbohydrates, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn (p < 0.05), and an increase in the time to reach maximum pH as well as an upward trend in pH, dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and B (p < 0.05). Under experimental conditions, the inclusion of gliricidia hay between 20 and 30% in cactus pear-based silage provided an improvement to the chemical composition and fermentation parameters of the silages. This study aimed to investigate consumer sensory profiles and liking of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO cheese produced with milk from cows reared indoors and fed with different forage sources, i.e., dry hay and fresh forage. Two cheese samples were tested by 119 Italian subjects, following a protocol that included a Check-All-That-Apply method to assess the sensory profile, a Just-About-Right scale to evaluate the adequacy of attributes, and questions on liking (9-point hedonic scale). A questionnaire related to personal information and consumption habits was also submitted. The color of the two samples, based on image analysis, was different: the sample produced with milk from the dairy cows fed fresh forage had a higher intensity of yellow than the other; they were also described differently (p ≤ 0.05) by participants in the consumer test. Indeed, Parmigiano Reggiano produced with milk from the cows that were fed dry hay was mainly characterized by a "fresh milk" and "solubility", while the sample produced with milk from cows fed fresh forage was described as "yellow", "seasoned", "pungent", and with a "cheese crust" flavor. Even if no significant differences were observed between the two samples in terms of liking (p ≤ 0.05), the attribute "graininess" showed a great impact on liking ratings together with "yellow" (p ≤ 0.05), apparently corresponding to a specific expectation regarding the intensity of these attributes. Data were also analyzed according to the gender of consumers, highlighting that for women, the adequacy of "fresh milk", "sweet", and "graininess" greatly impacted liking for the cheese from cows fed dry hay. Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), which belongs to subfamily Papilionoideae of Leguminosae, is a vital perennial forage known as "holy hay" due to its high contents of crude proteins and proanthocyanidins (PAs, also called condensed tannins) that have various pharmacological properties in animal feed, such as alleviating rumen tympanic disease in ruminants. In this study, we select an autotetraploid common sainfoin (2n = 4x = 28) and report its high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly with 28 pseudochromosomes and four haplotypes (~1950.14 Mb, contig N50 = 10.91 Mb). The copy numbers of genes involved in PA biosynthesis in sainfoin are significantly greater than those in four selected Fabales species, namely, autotetraploid Medicago sativa and three other diploid species, Lotus japonicus, Medicago truncatula, and Glycine max. Furthermore, gene expansion is confirmed to be the key contributor to the increased expression of these genes and subsequent PA enhancement in sainfoin. Transcriptomic analyses reveal that the expression of genes involved in the PA biosynthesis pathway is significantly increased in the lines with high PA content compared to the lines with medium and low PA content. The sainfoin genome assembly will improve our understanding of leguminous genome evolution and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in sainfoin. A chromosome-level genome assembly for Onobrychis viciifolia (autotetraploid sainfoin) combined with transcriptomic data provides insights into how proanthocyanidins are synthesized and Onobrychis evolution. Resumen: La rentabilidad es uno de los factores que más influye en la selección de presas. Este factor varía en función del tamaño de la presa y del tiempo de manipulación. Por lo tanto, generalmente las presas grandes son altamente rentables para los consumidores e intensifican la competencia. El cleptoparasitismo es una forma de competencia en la que un individuo roba alimento previamente obtenido por otro individuo. En consecuencia, la manipulación de presas grandes debería aumentar la probabilidad de ocurrencia de cleptoparasitismo, sin embargo, estas relaciones siguen siendo poco conocidas. En este trabajo estudiamos la ocurrencia de cleptoparasitismo de la Gaviota Cáhuil (Chroicocephalus maculipennis – Laridae) sobre Zarapitos (Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus – Scolopacidae) que se alimentan de chanchitos de mar (Emerita analoga) en una playa arenosa expuesta al oleaje en el sur de Chile. Los modelos lineales generalizados, ajustados a los datos de video secuencias focales‐individuales, mostraron que la probabilidad de cleptoparasitismo tuvo una respuesta sigmoidal positiva al tiempo de manipulación. Además, con un aumento de un segundo en el tiempo de manipulación, los Zarapitos duplicaron su probabilidad de ser cleptoparasitados. Además, la probabilidad de ser cleptoparasitado fue un 17% más alta con un aumento de 10 mm en la longitud de la presa y un 47% más alta con un aumento de una gaviota por hospedador. Sin embargo, el efecto del tiempo de manipulación sobre la probabilidad de cleptoparasitismo disminuyó ligeramente (2%) con un aumento de 10 mm en la clase de tamaño de la presa. Nuestros resultados sugieren la existencia de un umbral de tiempo en el que los consumidores pueden manipular a sus presas antes de que la probabilidad de cleptoparasitismo sea demasiado alta. Feeding in livestock production plays a fundamental role, taking into account that it is a source of obtaining nutrients for the animal, to be able to develop its daily biological activities and also to be able to physiologically transform them into the different products of interest in livestock activities. The basis of the diet of bovines in tropical countries are grazing grasses, which are characterized by providing a nutrient base for the animal. Thanks to their resistance, grasses have historically been the main source of bovine food, but their quality must be worked on to optimize the results in productive exercises, and they must also make efforts to guarantee their constant availability, mainly in times of scarcity, for which should promote storage strategies such as haymaking. The main goal of this article is to argue and provide support for the distinction between eventive and stative verbal predicates being encoded in the syntax. More specifically, following Travis (1991, 2010, MacDonald 2008, Kardos & Farkas 2022), I provide arguments for the existence of an aspectual functional projection situated between Voice and VP: AspP. I argue that eventive verbal predicates project AspP and stative verbal predicates do not. Its syntactic presence serves as input to semantics giving rise to a dynamic predicate, a predicate that entails (some amount of) change along a scale, based on scalar approaches to eventive verbal predicates (Hay et al. 1999, Kennedy & Levin 2008, Beavers 2011, 2013, among others). Empirically, I discuss two phenomena from Spanish: hacerlo "do so" substitution and verbal interfixes, like ot in fregotear "to scrub at" (vs. fregar "to scrub"). I argue that hacer selects for AspP while the verbal interfixes head Asp. Support for the main proposal that there is a syntactic distinction between eventives and statives emerges from the ungrammaticality of hacerlo when it takes a stative verbal antecedent and the fact that the output of interfixation does not give rise to stative verbal predicates, only eventive verbal predicates. Background: The ensiling process of sugarcane promotes yeast proliferation during fermentation, requiring the use of additives. Clitorea ternatea can be used as a natural additive in sugarcane silages to reduce dry matter losses and modifying the fermentation profile of the silage. Objective: To evaluate the fermentative profile, chemical composition, in vitro gas production and ruminal degradation kinetics of sugarcane silages associated with different levels of butterfly pea hay. Methods: Increasing levels of butterfly pea hay (0, 10, 20, and 30% on dry matter basis) were added to sugarcane silages. A completely randomized design was adopted, with four treatments and four repetitions, totaling 16 experimental silos that were opened after 60 days of ensiling. Results: Positive changes were observed in terms of fermentative losses, fermentative profile, chemical composition, in vitro gas production, and ruminal degradation kinetics with the addition of butterfly pea hay to sugarcane silage (p<0.05). Conclusion: The inclusion of up to 20% butterfly pea hay in sugarcane silage reduces fermentation losses and improves silage quality, such as increase in protein and energy content and reduction of the fibrous fractions of the silage, making silage an excellent ingredient to be included in ruminant diets. Background: Reducing inhaled dust particles improves lung function in horses with severe asthma. Soaked hay is commonly used by owners, but its efficacy in improving lung function and inflammation has not been documented. Objectives: To measure the effects of soaked hay and alfalfa pellets in horses with severe asthma. Animals: Ten adult horses with severe asthma from a research colony. Methods: Prospective controlled trial. Horses in clinical exacerbation were housed indoors and allocated to be fed either soaked hay (n = 5) or alfalfa pellets (n = 5) for 6 weeks. Soaked hay was immersed for 45 minutes and dried out hay was discarded between meals. Pulmonary function and clinical scores were measured before and after 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Tracheal mucus scores and bronchoalveolar lavages were performed before and after 6 weeks. Lung function was analyzed with a linear mixed model using log‐transformed data. Results: Lung resistance decreased from (median (range)) 2.47 (1.54‐3.95) to 1.59 (0.52‐2.10) cmH2O/L/s in the pellets group and from 1.89 (1.2‐3.54) to 0.61 (0.42‐2.08) cmH2O/L/s in the soaked hay group over the 6‐week period for an average difference of 1.06 cmH2O/L/s for pellets (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.09‐2.04, P =.03, not significant after correction) and 1.31 cmH2O/L/s for soaked hay (95% CI: −0.23 to 2.85, P <.001, significant). Conclusion and Clinical Importance: Soaked hay can control airway obstruction in horses with severe asthma. Conserved forages are important feed for livestock and equines all over the world. However, contamination with mycotoxins may occur, leading to health issues to the animals and to humans that consume products of animal origin. As information on the occurrence of mycotoxins in conserved grass and legume forages is scarce, a review of the literature published between January 1992 and July 2022 was performed to assess the worldwide occurrence and levels of mycotoxins in hay, haylage, and silage. Zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), and aflatoxins (AFs) were the most common mycotoxins found in conserved forage in North America, Africa, and the Middle East, with ZEN and AFs in levels above the maximum levels determined in European Union (EU) regulations for animal feed. Ochratoxin a (OTA) was detected in high levels in conserved forages in Europe. Although other mycotoxins were found, they were detected in lower frequencies and levels. Co-occurrence of mycotoxins was identified in more than half of the studies analyzed. There were few studies carried out in Asia, Middle East, Oceania, and no information was available on Central and South America, reinforcing the need of studies on the issue in these regions. Simple Summary: Spent Hypsizygus marmoreus substrate (SHMS) is a byproduct of the Hypsizygus marmoreus harvest and contains numerous nutrients and active substances. It is a new type of high-quality feed material for livestock and poultry, with a certain application value. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of composite alkali-stored SHMS on carcass quality, rumen fermentation, and rumen microbial diversity in goats. The results showed that adding it to the diet improved the carcass quality. It also increased the content of the total volatile fatty acids in rumen and had a positive impact on rumen fermentation. Furthermore, it altered the rumen microbial community structure of the goats. These research findings can provide scientific references for the utilization of SHMS as feed in the goat industry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of composite alkali-stored spent Hypsizygus marmoreus substrate (SHMS) on carcass quality, rumen fermentation, and rumen microbial diversity in goats. Twenty-four 6-month-old Chuanzhong black goats with similar body weights (20 ± 5 kg) were selected and randomly divided into four groups (n = 6 per group) and received four treatments: 0% (control group, CG); 20% (low-addition group, LG); 30% (moderate-addition group, MG); and 40% (high-addition group, HG) of SHMS-replaced silage corn and oat hay. The experiment lasted for 74 days (including a 14 d adaptation period and a 60 d treatment period). The results of this study showed that MG and HG significantly improved the marble score of goat meat (p < 0.05). The flesh color score significantly increased in each group (p < 0.05). The fat color scores significantly increased in LG and MG (p < 0.05). There were no significant effects on the pH value or shear force of the longissimus dorsi in each group (p > 0.05). The cooking loss in MG was higher than that in CG (p < 0.05). The histidine and tyrosine contents in each group of muscles significantly increased (p < 0.05), with no significant effect on fatty acids (p > 0.05). The rumen pH of MG significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while the total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) increased by 44.63% and 54.50%, respectively. The addition of the SHMS altered both the alpha and beta diversities of the rumen microbiota and significant differences in the composition and structure of the four microbial communities. The dominant bacterial phylum in each group were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, with Prevotella 1 as the dominant bacterial genus. Correlation analysis revealed that rumen bacteria are closely related to the animal carcass quality and rumen fermentation. In the PICRUSt prediction, 21 significantly different pathways were found, and the correlation network showed a positive correlation between the Prevotella 1 and 7 metabolic pathways, while the C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism was positively correlated with nine bacteria. In summary, feeding goats with an SHMS diet can improve the carcass quality, promote rumen fermentation, and alter the microbial structure. Simple Summary: The mature Kiko wethers performed satisfactorily in woodlands, whereas the performance of young and growing animals was suboptimal, and they required supplementation. However, information is scant on supplementation strategies for nursing does and their kids stocked in woodlands. This study aimed to evaluate the supplementation strategies and assess the associated performance of nursing Kiko does and kids and the nutritional status of does as reflected in their feces when stocked in woodlands. Two supplementation strategies were evaluated: (1) supplemental grazing in adjacent silvopasture plots for 3–4 h/day and (2) supplementation with corn at the rate of 0.5% of their metabolic body weight and free-choice hay. Nursing Kiko does raised in woodlands with supplemental grazing showed a better FAMACHA score and browsing activities at a greater height compared to their counterpart does supplemented with hay and corn. The fecal nitrogen concentration was higher in does with supplemental grazing compared to those supplemented with hay and corn. The supplemental grazing was found to be a better option than supplementing with hay and corn for nursing Kiko does raised in woodlands. The influence of different supplement types on the performance and nutrient dynamics of goats stocked in woodlands is not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplement type on the performance and the concentration of fecal nutrients of nursing does and the performance of kids raised in woodlands. One group of goats (SG, 9 does; 18 kids) was allowed supplemental grazing in adjacent silvopasture plots for 3–4 h daily and another group (SF, 8 does; 15 kids) was supplemented with corn (0.5% of metabolic weight) and ad libitum hay. Vegetation samples were collected and analyzed for productivity and quality (crude protein, CP; acid detergent fiber, ADF; neutral detergent fiber, NDF). The quality of the hay (N, ADF, NDF) and fecal samples (N, P, Ca) was analyzed. The animals' live weight, FAMACHA score, and body condition score were collected. The browsing height for does consuming woodland vegetation was measured. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure, Mixed procedure, and MEANS procedure in SAS 9.4. SG does showed better FAMACHA scores vs. SF does (p < 0.05). Fecal N and ADF were greater (p < 0.0001) in SG does vs. SF does. The findings showed a better performance and greater concentration of fecal nutrients in SG does vs. SF does, suggesting grazing quality pastures is a better option than using feedstuffs to supplement nursing does in woodland. There are many metaphors about using propitious moments to prepare for an inclement future: make hay while the sun shines, the best time to fix the roof is on a clear day, strike while the iron is hot, etc. These all imply the drudgery of work: a farmer baling hay on a sunny day, a slater shingling high on a roof under a blue sky, a forger hammering inside a sweltering workshop on a breezy afternoon. In a third semester continuation of the rest of a tense, yet stable 2023, there is a sense in which both South Korea and North Korea have been following the lesson of these proverbs as they use relative calm on the Korean Peninsula to build out their respective, opposed security and defense capabilities. Another, similar proverb captures an additional element of this dynamic: if you spend your whole life waiting for the storm, you'll never enjoy the sunshine. Alfalfa is a commonly grown forage in the Intermountain West region of the United States and is often included in the diet of dairy cattle. Alfalfa provides a variety of different nutrients, but the nutrient content of alfalfa varies depending on factors such as the soil, region, cutting, and climate. However, alfalfa leaves tend to have less variation in their nutrient content than alfalfa stems. Fractionating alfalfa may be one way to improve control of nutrients provided when developing a ration for developing dairy heifers. The purpose of this study was to determine whether including fractionated alfalfa in the diet impacts the growth or conception rates of developing dairy heifers. Heifers were allocated to one of three treatments: a control group fed a typical diet (CON ; n  = 8), a diet that replaced alfalfa with fractionated alfalfa leaf pellets and alfalfa stems (ProLEAF MAX + ProFiber Plus; PLM  +  PFP ; n  = 8), or a diet that replaced alfalfa with alfalfa stems (PFP ; n  = 8) for 85 d. Heifers were fed individually twice daily and weight, hip height (HH), and wither height (WH) were recorded every 14 d. Additionally, blood was collected every 28 d, and conception rates were recorded at the end of the trial. Heifers receiving the PFP diet consumed less dry matter (P  = 0.001) than the CON treatment. Analyses were then conducted to determine nutrient intake and heifers receiving the PFP diet also consumed less neutral detergent fiber (P  = 0.02), acid detergent fiber (P  = 0.02), crude protein (P  = 0.001), and net energy for maintenance (P  = 0.001) than heifers consuming the CON diet; however, no differences (P  > 0.10) were observed between heifers fed the CON and PLM + PFP diets. Analysis of body weight gain over the feeding period showed no difference (P  = 0.52) among heifers consuming the different treatment diets. Additionally, treatment did not affect average daily gain (P  = 0.49), gain:feed (P  = 0.82), HH gain (P  = 0.20), or WH gain (P  = 0.44) among heifers receiving different diets. Treatment × time altered (P  < 0.001) blood urea nitrogen when analyzed as a repeated measure. Total feed cost was lowest (P  < 0.001) for the PFP diet and cost of gain tended (P  = 0.09) to be increased for the PLM + PFP diet compared to the CON diet. Overall, these data indicate that including alfalfa stems in a developing heifer diet may decrease dry matter intake, lower input costs, and increase profitability, without negatively impacting growth. We describe and discuss the intestinal mycobiota of dairy cows reared in France following variations in dietary regimes and two seasons. Two groups of 21 animals were followed over a summer and winter period, and another group of 28 animals was followed only during the same summer season. The summer diet was based on grazing supplemented with 3–5 kg/d of maize, grass silage and hay, while the winter diet consisted of 30% maize silage, 25% grass silage, 15% hay and 30% concentrate. A total of 69 DNA samples were extracted from the feces of these cows. Amplification and sequencing of the ITS2 region were used to assess mycobiota diversity. Analyses of alpha and beta diversity were performed and compared statistically. The mycobiota changed significantly from summer to winter conditions with a decrease in its diversity, richness and evenness parameters, while beta diversity analysis showed different mycobiota profiles. Of note, the Geotrichum operational taxonomic unit (OTU) was prevalent in the winter group, with a mean relative abundance (RA) of 65% of the total mycobiota. This Geotrichum OTU was also found in the summer group, but to a lesser extent (5%). In conclusion, a summer grazing diet allowed a higher fecal fungal diversity. These data show, for the first time, that a change in diet associated with seasonality plays a central role in shaping hindgut fungal diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The earliest introduction of livestock (cattle, goats, sheep, pigs) into the Carpathian Basin was an important step towards farming expansion into continental Europe. This spread beyond the environments of the southern Balkans was accompanied by a reduction in the spectrum of cultivated crops, changes in the relative representation of different domestic animals, and, most likely, adaptations of husbandry practices. How the earliest farmers in the Carpathian Basin kept their domestic stock is still understudied. We explored early animal management and land use strategies at the Starčevo settlement at Alsónyék-Bátaszék, Hungary (Early Neolithic, ca. 5800–5600 cal BC). Settled at the intersection of wide alluvial plains, waterlogged meadows and marshes to the east, and forested hills to the west, early farmers at Alsónyék had a wide variety of options for nourishing their livestock. We performed stable isotope ratio analysis of bone collagen (n = 99; δ13C, δ15N) and tooth enamel (nteeth = 28, sequentially sampled for δ13C and δ18O) from wild and domestic animals to locate them in the landscape and investigate herding practices on a seasonal scale. The bone collagen isotope ratios mostly indicate feeding in open environments. However, results from the sequential analysis of cattle and sheep enamel suggest diverse dietary strategies for winters, including consumption of forest resources, consumption of summer hay and grazing in an open environment. Most pigs appear to have had herbivorous diets, but several individuals likely supplemented their diet with animal protein. Stable isotope ratio results from the Lengyel phase at Alsónyék (ca. 4800–4300 cal BC) suggest more access to animal protein for pigs, and feeding in more open areas by wild boar, red deer and cattle compared to the Starčevo phase. Legumes shrubs such as Cratylia argentea have an ability to thrive in environments with low water availability and poor soil. On the other hand, forage grasses such as Tifton 85 have a greater demand for inputs to be productive. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of growing and finishing Lacaune lambs fed Cratylia argentea hay as an alternative to Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp). Twenty-four Lacaune lambs aged between five and six months (average body weight [BW] 21.50 ± 3.38 kg) were arranged in a split-plot randomized block design. The plots consisted of different Cratylia to Tifton 85 hay proportions (0, 20%, 40%, or 100%, dry matter [DM] basis) as a roughage replacement in the total diet. The subplots represented two evaluation times, entitled "initial period" and "final period", which consisted of the early seven days of total feces and urine collection, and the last seven days of the experiment, respectively. The lambs were blocked by weight with six replicates per treatment. The results show that the level of Tifton 85 replacement for Cratylia hay in the roughage portion of the lamb diet did not influence (P > 0.05) weight gain (WG), dry matter intake or dry matter digestibility; feed conversion, feed efficiency; and the evaluated nitrogen balance variables. The digestibility coefficient of neutral detergent fiber decreased linearly as Tifton 85 replacement for Cratylia level was increased, which probably happened due to the presence of highly lignified material within the Cratylia hay. However, the alternative legume maintained animal performance of Tifton 85. In conclusion, Cratylia hay can be recommended as a potential substitute for Tifton 85 hay, which requires greater inputs for the production. Disturbances such as grazing, fire, and burrowing are historically important in North American grasslands, and plans for restoring disturbance regimes are often required for successful restoration. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has become the dominant grassland restoration mechanism in many areas, and requires planned disturbances known as mid-contract management (MCM). We recorded evidence of MCM in CRP fields across a 14-state region of the western and central United States, then revisited fields after one to five years to characterize bare ground and vegetative cover and composition using edge-of-road visual surveys. We found a reduced cover of grasses up to five years after MCM, and a concomitant increased cover of flowering forbs and diversity of pollinator-friendly forbs. There was little measurable change in overall plant cover or bare ground cover between one and five years after MCM, though bare soil cover did increase slightly. Baseline tree and shrub covers were very low on average but highly variable due to outliers with high woody cover. After MCM, the presence of woody vegetation remained low and relatively constant. Grazing and haying resulted in a lower probability of noxious grass presence than mowing or disking, but haying and disking were better for inhibiting the presence of noxious forbs. These results show that MCM can be a useful tool for maintaining vegetation quality. The results also point to an important need to understand factors that influence the effects of MCM, including disturbance technique, disturbance frequency, drought, and climate. Introducing new forage crops such as Japanese millet (Echinochloa frumentacea) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change in the dry steppe zone, expanding forage crop options, and obtaining nutritious feed for the development of animal husbandry. The aim of this study was to assess the productivity and feed value of these crops. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to investigate the changes and variations in the yields and chemical compositions of Japanese millet and pearl millet when grown as sole crops or in mixed cropping in the dry steppe zone of northern Kazakhstan. Among the annual crops sown via sole cropping, the hay of the Japanese millet, sown in the third decade of May and harvested during full heading, was observed to have a higher content of raw protein and other nutrients than Sudanese grass hay, that is, the raw protein content was higher at 1.81%, the raw oil content at 0.12, and the raw ash content at 1.88%. In addition, among the mixtures of crops, the hay of the crop mixtures containing pearl millet, sown in the above period and harvested as hay during the milky stage, the full heading stage, and the formation of spikelets in the grain family stage, differed from the hay of Sudanese grass sown in the same period and collected during full heading in terms of the contents of raw protein and other nutrients and the low content of raw ash, that is, the content of raw protein was at 2.16%, raw oil at 0.39, raw ash at 0.95, without nitrogen extractives (WNEs) at 3.78, and starch at 0.11. The calcium content was higher by 0.08% and carotene by 0.11 mg/kg, and raw lentils were lower by 0.94%. The objective of this research was to determine the potential for hay production of Quenia guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus cv. BRS Quenia), Congo grass (Urochloa ruziziensis), and Xaraes palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Xaraes) following soybean cultivation (Glycine max) in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experimental field was divided into 12 plots, with 4 replicates of each grass species. Chemical composition, forage mass (FM), and the potential for milk and carcass production were determined for the three grasses. Principal component analysis showed that the total digestible nutrients (TDN) had the most significant influence on milk and carcass potential. Quenia guinea grass reached maximum forage accumulation at 134 days after soybean harvest, representing 4191.51 kg ha−1 of FM. Congo grass and Xaraes palisade grass produced 4033.51 kg ha−1 and 4437.22 kg ha−1, respectively, in cuts made at 154 and 138 days. Quenia guinea grass had 20.71% soluble protein in its composition when harvested at 115 days. Regarding milk production potential, Congo grass, on the other hand, showed a linear reduction in milk production as the number of days after soybean harvest increased. As for carcass production potential, Congo grass demonstrated the highest carcass production potential (110.65 kg Mg−1 FM) at 107 cutting days. Xaraes palisade grass had the highest FM production, while Quenia guinea grass stood out in soluble protein. Conversely, Congo grass showed greater potential for hay production when overseeding in soybeans, as it excelled in carcass production potential. We investigated the quality indices of the biomass from Avena sativa and Hordeum vulgare species which were grown in the experimental plot of the “Alexandru Ciubotaru” National Botanical Garden (Institute), Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. The results revealed that the dry matter of whole plants of the studied species contained 9.5-11.9% CP, 6.5-7.5% ash, 34.9- 35.6% CF, 36.7-37.4% ADF, 62.7-62.8% NDF, 2.9-4.6 % ADL, 16.3-16.7% TSS, with forage value 598-603 g/kg DDM, RFV= 89, 11.84-11.92 MJ/kg DE, 9.72-9.79 MJ/kg ME and 5.37-5.81 MJ/kg NEl. The nutrient content and energy value of the prepared hays were: 9.0- 10.5% CP, 6.9-7.4% ash, 38.1- 43.5% CF, 40.4-45.6% ADF, 66.0-73.6% NDF, 4.5-5.0 % ADL, 5.1-111% TSS, 534-574 g/kg DDM, 10.69-11.40 MJ/kg DE, 8.76-9.36 MJ/kg ME, 4.79-5.39 MJ/kg NEl. The ensiled forage contained 10.2-12.9% CP, 7.8-11.4% ash, 33.8-39.3% CF, 34.7-41.3% ADF, 57.1.0-69.9% NDF, 1.8-4.0 % ADL, 2.6-12.9% TSS, 32.9-37.3% Cel, 22.4-28.6 % HC, 567-619 g/kg DDM, RFV= 76-100, 11.28-12.21MJ/kg DE, 9.26-10.06 MJ/kg ME and 5.29-6.10MJ/kg NEl. The biochemical methane potential of the studied substrates from Avena sativa reaches 329-355 l/kg VS, but Hordeum vulgare substrates – 361-379 l/kg VS. The collected straw from the studied species contained 6.2-4.5% CP, 5.9-8.2% ash, 5.6-6.8 % ADL, 44.3-48.2% Cel, 23.2-30.1 % HC with biochemical methane potential 282-308 l/kg VS and theoretical ethanol potential 541-574 L/t. The results of state agroecological monitoring of soils conducted in the southwestern part of the forest–steppe zone of the Central Chernozem Region are analyzed. It was found that in the Aar layer of the arable chernozem in a typical forest–steppe zone of the Central Chernozem Region, the mean total contents of As and Hg are 4.18 and 0.022 mg/kg, respectively. In the parent rock (C), the content of As is 1.38 times higher, and Hg is 2.22 times lower than in the Aar layer. Organic fertilizers are the main source of As and Hg in the agroecosystems of the Belgorod region, but this does not pose a danger to soil pollution or crop production. The highest mean As content (0.020 mg/kg) was found in winter wheat, peas, and sunflower seeds, and the lowest (0.016 mg/kg) was in corn and soybeans. The highest Hg content was found in barley (0.006 mg/kg) and winter wheat (0.007 mg/kg), while the lowest content of this element (0.002 mg/kg) was found in sainfoin hay. Bioconversion of plant material with white-rot fungi has demonstrated improvements in in vitro digestibility, however, effects on rumen fermentation parameters and methane (CH4) production, when included as a dietary ingredient, are not clear. The aim of this study was to assess changes in rumen fermentation parameters and in vitro CH4 production by dietary inclusion of ryegrass-fescue hay biodegraded with P. ostreatus (H-PO) during 14 days of solid fermentation. The experiment used 2 diets with contrasting acid detergent fibre (aADFom) content which were added with 0, 3 and 6% H-PO. Substrates were incubated 3 times with sampling at 24 h. Results were analysed by ANOVA, and compared with Tukey's test and polynomial contrasts. Inclusion of H-PO at concentrations of 3 and 6% resulted in increased in vitro dry matter (DM) disappearance (IVDMD) by 10 and 12% respectively, whereas high concentrations of aADFom reduced IVDMD by 10% as compared to low aADFom. Methane production (mg/g DM incubated) and yield (mg/g DM degraded) were reduced by increasing aADFom and P. ostreatus biodegraded hay concentrations in the diets (p < 0.001) whereas concentrations of total short-chain fatty acids were not affected by the inclusion of biodegraded hay (p = 0.080) or aADFom concentration (p = 0.076). Increasing concentrations of biodegraded hay resulted in increased acetate (p < 0.001), and reduced propionate proportions (p = 0.021) but did not affect butyrate (p = 0.233). In conclusion the use of biodegraded hay as a pre-treated ingredient improved the utilisation of low and high fibre diets by increasing the in vitro disappearance, and decreasing CH4 emissions, without increasing the propionate proportion. The use of hay biodegraded with P. ostreatus (H-PO) improves the digestibility of ruminant diets. The use of H-PO decreases methane, and increases acetate production in in vitro conditions.
