Abstract

Two new 3D Cd(II)-MOFs have been constructed from a tetrakis(4-carboxybiphenyl)ethylene ligand, namely [Cd4.25(tcbpe)3]·0.25(C4H11N)·7.5DEF (NLMOF-1) and [Cd2K(H2tcbpe)(Htcbpe)]n·4DEF (NLMOF-2). Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that NLMOF-1 is of 3D framework constituted by 1D metal chains containing six-nuclear secondary building units (SBUs) and one-dimensional channel, while NLMOF-2 also exhibits a 3D structure in which the 1D channel is blocked by coordinated K ions, resulting in poor chemical stability. NLMOF-1 possesses excellent stability in both water and common organic solvents, conducive to investigating its utility as a chemical sensor. Fluorescence sensing studies show that NLMOF-1 is characteristic of highly sensitive and selective quenching effects toward Fe3+ ions in DMF, DMA, and acetonitrile, as well as MnO4− ions in H2O, DMA, and acetonitrile. The above results suggest that NLMOF-1 can be considered a potential fluorescent sensor for detecting Fe3+ and MnO4− ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper reports an efficient method of preparing porous polymeric microspheres by solvent evaporation in foam phase, in which phase separation between polymer and porogen occurs in foam phase instead of that in water phase by using the traditional solvent evaporation method. The method provides outstanding features, including being time-saving, of high-yield and able for continuous production, in which formation of porous polymeric microspheres finished within 3 min with a high production yield up to approximate 95 wt% and the process was able to be developed into a continuous process for production of porous polymeric microspheres. It was also universal to non-crosslinked polymers since the method is a development on the traditional emulsion solvent evaporation method. The new method is efficient and can be used potentially on the industrial scale for continuous production of porous polymeric microspheres.

Abstract

A general and versatile strategy to prepare melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsules encapsulating oil-based fragrances by combining solvent evaporation and in situ polymerization was proposed in this work. The oil-based fragrance was pre-encapsulated by an inner polyacrylate membrane via solvent evaporation, followed by in situ polymerization of MF precondensates as an outer shell. The polyacrylate membrane is used as an intermediate bridging layer to stabilize the oil-based fragrance, and to provide driving forces for in situ polymerization of MF precondensates through electrostatic attractions between carboxyl groups and ammonium ions. It was demonstrated that MF microcapsules containing clove oil were prepared successfully. The amount and the composition of the intermediate polyacrylate bridging layer were critical. Smooth and sphere-shaped MF-clove oil microcapsules were prepared when the weight ratio of polyacrylate to clove oil was over 60 wt% and the concentration of acrylic acid (AA) increased to 10 wt% in polyacrylate. In addition, MF microcapsules containing sunflower oil and hexyl salicylate were prepared by using this method. The work suggests that this new approach can be potentially used to encapsulate various core materials, tuning the shell properties of microcapsules such as thickness, mechanical strength and release properties.

Abstract

Radix arnebiae oil (RAO) is a clinically useful traditional Chinese medical formula with outstanding curative effects on burns. However, the mechanism of the effect of RAO on wound healing remains unclear. The present study investigates the molecular mechanisms of the potential curative effect of RAO on wound healing. The concentrations of the main constituents, shikonin, imperatorin, and ferulic acid in RAO detected by HPLC were 24.57, 3.15, and 0.13 mg/mL, respectively. A rat burn model was established, and macroscopic and histopathological studies were performed. RAO significantly accelerated wound closure and repair scarring, increased superoxide dismutase activities, and reduced malondialdehyde. RAO also downregulated interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1 β and tumor necrosis factor- α in wound tissues and increased secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor, and transforming growth factor (TGF)- β 1. RAO increased the gene expression of TGF- β 1, type I and III collagen, and increased the protein expression of TGF- β 1 and phosphorylation of PI3K and Akt. In conclusion, RAO likely promotes wound healing via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and increases re-epithelization. Activation of the TGF- β 1/PI3K/Akt pathway may play an important role in the healing efficacy of RAO.
