The utility of a universal DNA ‘barcode’ fragment of 658 base pairs of the Cytochrome C Oxidase I (COI) gene for the recognition of all animal species has been a widely debated topic on theoretical and practical levels. Regardless of its challenges, large amounts of COI sequence data have been produced in the last two decades. To optimally use the data towards reliable species identification will require further steps to validate the method and reference libraries. The fruit fly tribe Dacini holds about a thousand species, of which eighty are pests of economic concern, including some of the world’s foremost fruit and vegetable pests, and there are many morphologically cryptic species complexes in the tribe. Where previous studies showed limited success in using COI to identify Dacini, our results with a highly curated morphological dataset indicate high congruence between morphology and COI: 90% of the species in our 5,576 sequences, 262-species global dataset can be identified with COI alone based on a monophyly criterion. However, in some key pest species belonging to complexes that were previously thought diagnosable with COI, we found that expanded sampling and independent validation of identifications using genomic data revealed introgression of mitochondrial DNA. We find that the informative SNPs are uniformly distributed across the COI gene, and we provide recommendations for standardization. We conclude that reliable molecular identifications with COI require extensive species coverage, population sampling, and genomics-supported reference identifications before they can be validated as a “diagnostic” marker for specific groups.

This thesis attempts to look at the question of Muslim citizenship in the aftermath of Hindu-Muslim violence in India. With the advance march of Hindu nationalism in India, when media and academic studies increasingly identify Muslims as second-class citizens, very little work has been done to show what this second-class citizenship actually looks on the ground. In my work, I go beyond the legal understanding of formal citizenship, or membership of a nation and look at the quality of substantial citizenship, understood through lived experiences of Muslims in India. Though we have considerable literature on the causal effects of these riots, or the role of Hindu nationalism in such violence and scholarly work on the questions of justice and reconciliation for the Muslim survivors, we know very little about how these riots influence their experience and expectations of citizenship. There is also lack of work on the lives of women survivors of these riots, in my thesis whose path to recovery and quest for citizenship is different than Muslim men. Drawing on sixteen months of fieldwork among the survivors of the 2002 Gujarat riots who live in the outskirts of the Ahmedabad city, I ask how the politics of contingent citizenship can be situated in the aftermath of Hindu-Muslim conflict in India. I explore the notion of contingent citizenship in my work through the situated analysis of the lives of Muslim survivors in the aftermath of 2002 violence. In this process, I find that the political subjectivity as a citizen is contingent upon negotiations with multiple actors, local specificities and position within fuzzy social dynamics. As working with conflict survivors require attention to complex ethical issues, I used novel methodological approaches such as activist anthropology. In this process, my thesis provides rooted analysis that challenges both the present and the past on the question of Muslim citizenship in India.

© 2017 IEEE. A robust multichannel smartphone spectrometer exploiting multiorder diffraction imaging on a smartphone camera is reported. The instrument utilizes a thin film diffractive element generating multiple orders of diffracted light from a broadband visible source (white LED, λ = 400-700 nm). The smartphone's CMOS camera captures all the diffraction orders simultaneously, producing a 2-D image. Each of these diffraction orders can be utilized as a single optical channel for dedicated samples enabling simultaneous multiple sample analysis. The wavelength distribution along the diffraction direction produces a tunable spectral resolution of δλ ∼1.6 to 3.0 nm/pixel over the bandwidth of Δλ = 300 nm. A customized app processes each diffraction image into spectra. 3-D printing is used to create the entire instrument prototype. As an initial demonstration, simultaneous absorption measurements of reference and sample cells using the first diffraction orders (m = +1 and -1) is shown. Absorption spectra for a laser dye (Rhodamine B) and a pH-responsive buffer (bromothymol blue) are measured. This offers a low cost (

© 2020 by the authors. Carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas, capture has recently become a crucial technological solution to reduce atmospheric emissions from fossil fuel burning. Thereafter, many efforts have been put forwarded to reduce the burden on climate change by capturing and separating CO2, especially from larger power plants and from the air through the utilization of different technologies (e.g., membrane, absorption, microbial, cryogenic, chemical looping, and so on). Those technologies have often suffered from high operating costs and huge energy consumption. On the right side, physical process, such as adsorption, is a cost-effective process, which has been widely used to adsorb different contaminants, including CO2. Henceforth, this review covered the overall efficacies of CO2 adsorption from air at 196 K to 343 K and different pressures by the carbon-based materials (CBMs). Subsequently, we also addressed the associated challenges and future opportunities for CBMs. According to this review, the efficacies of various CBMs for CO2 adsorption have followed the order of carbon nanomaterials (i.e., graphene, graphene oxides, carbon nanotubes, and their composites) < mesoporous -microporous or hierarchical porous carbons < biochar and activated biochar < activated carbons.

© 2020 by the authors. Lignocellulosic biomass is widely grown in many agricultural-based countries. These are typically incinerated or discarded in open spaces, which further may cause severe health and environmental problems. Hence, the proper utilization and conversion of different parts of lignocellulosic biomasses (e.g., corn wastes derived leave, cob, stalk, and husk) into value-added materials could be a promising way of protecting both health and environments. In addition, they have high-potential for myriads applications (e.g., pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, and so on). In this context, herein, we isolated holocellulose (a mixture of alpha α, beta β, and gamma γ cellulose) from corn waste, and then it was converted into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Subsequently, the prepared CMC was evaluated successfully to be used as a pharmaceutical excipient. Different characterization tools were employed for structural, morphological, and thermal properties of the extracted holocellulose and synthesized CMC. Results showed that the highest yield of CMC was obtained 187.5% along with the highest degree of substitution (DS i.e., 1.83) in a single stage (i.e., size reduction technique) with the lowest particle size of holocellulose (100 μm). This happened due to the use of a single stage instead of multiple stages. Finally, extracted CMC was successfully used as a pharmaceutical excipient with promising results compared to commercially available pharmaceutical-grade CMC.

© 2020 by the authors. Activated carbon (AC) has been extensively utilized as an adsorbent over the past few decades. AC has widespread applications, including the removal of different contaminants from water and wastewater, and it is also being used in capacitors, battery electrodes, catalytic supports, and gas storage materials because of its specific characteristics e.g., high surface area with electrical properties. The production of AC from naturally occurring precursors (e.g., coal, biomass, coconut shell, sugarcane bagasse, and so on) is highly interesting in terms of the material applications in chemistry; however, recently much focus has been placed on the use of agricultural wastes (e.g., rice husk) to produce AC. Rice husk (RH) is an abundant as well as cheap material which can be converted into AC for various applications. Various pollutants such as textile dyes, organic contaminants, inorganic anions, pesticides, and heavy metals can be effectively removed by RHderived AC. In addition, RH-derived AC has been applied in supercapacitors, electrodes for Li-ion batteries, catalytic support, and energy storage, among other uses. Cost-effective synthesis of AC can be an alternative for AC production. Therefore, this review mainly covers different synthetic routes and applications of AC produced from RH precursors. Different environmental, catalytic, and energy applications have been pinpointed. Furthermore, AC regeneration, desorption, and relevant environmental concerns have also been covered. Future scopes for further research and development activities are also discussed. Overall, it was found that RH-derived AC has great potential for different applications which can be further explored at real scales, i.e., for industrial applications in the future.

A robust multi-channel smartphone spectrometer is reported by utilizing the multiple diffraction orders of an ordinary diffraction grating.

A self-contained smartphone-based colorimetric sensing platform adaptable for multiple analytes is demonstrated. Concurrent variation of multiple optical sensing parameters is addressed using multiple nonlinear regression analysis.

Background In severe falciparum malaria, unlike sepsis, hypotension on admission is uncommon. We hypothesized that low nitric oxide bioavailability due to the presence of cell-free hemoglobin (CFH) increases vascular tone in severe malaria. Methods Patients with severe malaria (n = 119), uncomplicated malaria (n = 91), or suspected bacterial sepsis (n = 56), as well as healthy participants (n = 50), were recruited. The systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) was estimated from the echocardiographic cardiac index and the mean arterial pressure. Results SVRI and hematocrit levels were lower and plasma CFH and asymmetric dimethylarginine levels were higher in patients with malaria, compared with healthy participants. In multivariate linear regression models for mean arterial pressure or SVRI in patients with severe malaria, hematocrit and CFH but not asymmetric dimethylarginine were significant predictors. The SVRI was lower in patients with suspected bacterial sepsis than in those with severe malaria, after adjustment for hematocrit and age. Plasma CFH levels correlated positively with the core-peripheral temperature gradient and plasma lactate levels and inversely with the perfusion index. Impaired peripheral perfusion, as reflected by a low perfusion index or a high core-peripheral temperature gradient, predicted mortality in patients with severe malaria. Conclusions CFH is associated with mean arterial pressure, SVRI, and peripheral perfusion in patients with severe malaria. This may be mediated through the nitric oxide scavenging potency of CFH, increasing basal vascular tone and impairing tissue perfusion.

Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. is traditionally used by the indigenous communities of Bangladesh to treat different diseases, such as pain, edema, tumor, jaundice, and skin infections. This study tested neuro-pharmacological, anti-nociceptive, and antidiarrheal activities by in vivo and in silico experiments for the metabolites extracted (methanol) from the leaves of Cuscuta reflexa (MECR). During the anxiolytic evaluation analyzed by elevated plus maze and hole board tests, MECR (200 and 400 mg/kg) exhibited a significant dose-dependent reduction of anxiety-like behavior in mice. Similarly, mice treated with MECR demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease in the time of immobility in both forced swimming and tail suspension tests. In addition, anti-nociceptive activity was assessed by the chemical-induced (acetic acid and formalin) pain models. In both cases, 400 mg/kg was found to be most effective and significantly (p &lt, 0.001) inhibited acetic acid stimulated writhing and formalin-induced licking (pain response) in mice. Furthermore, antidiarrheal efficacy determined by the castor-oil induced diarrheal model manifested an evident inhibition of diarrheal stool frequency. In parallel, previously isolated bioactive compounds were documented based on the biological activities and subjected to in silico studies to correlate with the current pharmacological outcomes. The selected isolated compounds (15) displayed favorable binding affinities to potassium channels, human serotonin receptor, COX-1, COX-2, M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor, and 5-HT3 receptor proteins. Additionally, the ADME/T and toxicological properties were justified to unveil their drug-like properties and toxicity level. Overall, Cuscuta reflexa is bioactive and could be a potential source for the development of alternative medicine.

Growing electricity demand and scarcity of energy sources are the driving force of exploration of renewable energy sources. However, uncertain energy production of these sources creates difficulties in their control and operation with or without a grid utility connection. This paper proposes a novel power control strategy which employs a voltage band in the DC-link voltage to maintain voltage stability and thereby improve the power quality during temporary disturbances in a network. It is applied to act as an inverter's inertia and obtain maximum benefit from the storage system, based on the features of a DC busbar to avoid a voltage limit violation. It also proposes a demand dispatch strategy based on a client's terminal voltage, which avoids the complexity of communication lines, to balance the network power during power shortages. The developed control algorithm is tested on an IEEE 16 bus test feeder with multiple DG units and from the results it is found that the proposed control methods provide effective control of the voltage and power quality during transient conditions and scarce power generation.

Traditionally, critical path method (CPM) is widely used with manual resource assignment for planning and scheduling of the construction projects. This is predominant in the construction industry of Bangladesh. Therefore, the industry often faces challenges to complete construction projects in minimum possible time with optimum use of resources. Although, concurrency-based scheduling is an efficient tool to reduce construction completion time, manual formulation of plans for construction operations using the technique is cumbersome (because of complex nature of real-life construction operations, for instance a real-life construction work involves complex interaction between activities, limited number of resources and resource-sharing among activities, etc.) With this viewpoint, the present study aims to introduce computer-aided simulation modelling-based approach to reduce the completion time of a resource-constrained construction operation utilizing the features of concurrency-based scheduling. The study also proposes a method to optimize the resource use of construction operation. A real-life construction work has been considered as the case construction operation for this study. Results indicate that the simulation model developed for the case project can efficiently generate work-flow plans with reduced construction durations compared to the work-flow plan of the actual schedule. The model can also help to optimize the use of resources. Furthermore, the model developed for the case project can easily be reshaped, expanded and applied to other construction operations.
