Assume a time-harmonic elastic wave is incident onto a penetrable anisotropic body embedded into a homogeneous isotropic background medium. We propose an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the uniqueness and existence of weak solutions by applying the Fredholm alternative and using properties of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in both two and three dimensions. The Fr\'echet derivative of the near-field solution operator with respect to the boundary of the scatterer is derived. As an application, we design a descent algorithm for recovering the interface from the near-field data of one or several incident directions and frequencies. The concept of scattering coefficients has played a pivotal role in a broad range of inverse scattering and imaging problems in acoustic, and electromagnetic media. In view of their promising applications in inverse problems related to mathematical imaging and elastic cloaking, the notion of elastic scattering coefficients of an inclusion is presented from the perspective of boundary layer potentials and a few properties are discussed. A reconstruction algorithm is developed and analyzed for extracting the elastic scattering coefficients from multi-static response measurements of the scattered field in order to cater to inverse scattering problems. The decay rate, stability and error analyses, and the estimate of maximal resolving order in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Moreover, scattering-coefficients-vanishing structures are designed and their utility for enhancement of nearly elastic cloaking is elucidated., Comment: 40 pages

Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle imbedded in an isotropic homogeneous medium. The obstacle is supposed to possess a circular conic point or an edge point on the boundary in three dimensions and a planar corner point in two dimensions. The opening angles of cones and edges are allowed to be any number in $(0,2\pi)\backslash\{\pi\}$. We prove that such an obstacle scatters any incoming wave non-trivially (i.e., the far field patterns cannot vanish identically), leading to the absence of real non-scattering wavenumbers. Local and global uniqueness results for the inverse problem of recovering the shape of a penetrable scatterers are also obtained using a single incoming wave. Our approach relies on the singularity analysis of the inhomogeneous Laplace equation in a cone.

Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset \mathbb R^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be H\"older continuous near the corners. If $D\subset \mathbb R^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of the contrast. Our arguments are motivated by recent studies on the absence of non-scattering wavenumbers in domains with corners. As a byproduct, we show that the smoothness conditions in previous corner scattering results are only required near the corners.

In this work, we develop a general mathematical framework on regularized approximate cloaking of elastic waves governed by the Lam\'e system via the approach of transformation elastodynamics. Our study is rather comprehensive. We first provide a rigorous justification of the transformation elastodynamics. Based on the blow-up-a-point construction, elastic material tensors for a perfect cloak are derived and shown to possess singularities. In order to avoid the singular structure, we propose to regularize the blow-up-a-point construction to be the blow-up-a-small-region construction. However, it is shown that without incorporating a suitable lossy layer, the regularized construction would fail due to resonant inclusions. In order to defeat the failure of the lossless construction, a properly designed lossy layer is introduced into the regularized cloaking construction . We derive sharp asymptotic estimates in assessing the cloaking performance. The proposed cloaking scheme is capable of nearly cloaking an arbitrary content with a high accuracy.

We develop three inverse elastic scattering schemes for locating multiple small, extended and multiscale rigid bodies, respectively. There are some salient and promising features of the proposed methods. The cores of those schemes are certain indicator functions, which are obtained by using only a single far-field pattern of the pressure (longitudinal) wave, or the shear (transversal) wave, or the total wave field. Though the inverse scattering problem is known to be nonlinear and ill-posed, the proposed reconstruction methods are totally "direct" and there are no inversions involved. Hence, the methods are very efficient and robust against noisy data. We present two uniqueness results for the inverse problem of determining an index of refraction by the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement encoded into the scattering amplitude. The first one is a local uniqueness in determining a variable index of refraction by the fixed incident-direction scattering amplitude. The inverse problem is formally posed with such measurement data. The second one is a global uniqueness in determining a constant refractive index by a single far-field measurement. This paper is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium covered on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the frame of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation for two refractive indices is obtained, and then inspired by Kirsch's idea, the refractive index can be identified by utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem., Comment: 19 pages, submitted for publication

In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a doubly periodic Lipschitz structure through the measurement of the scattered field above the structure produced by point sources lying above the structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be homogenous and lossless with a positive dielectric coefficient. Below the structure is a perfect conductor partially coated with a dielectric. A periodic version of the linear sampling method is developed to reconstruct the doubly periodic structure using the near field data. In this case, the far field equation defined on the unit ball of R^3 is replaced by the near field equation which is a linear integral equation of the first kind defined on a plane above the periodic surface., Comment: 16 pages, Submitted for publication
