Surround inhibition (SI) in the motor system is important in individuation of actions, but is sometimes difficult to demonstrate. It has also not been evaluated in real life tasks. In this study, we use real life tasks and a new method where excitability of the surround muscle is assessed with respect to its current activity level rather than when it is at rest. Motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes were measured in the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscle while participants performed several motor tasks: "writing" on paper, "holding a pen" precisely and, "holding a water bottle" against gravity. These MEPs were compared to ADM MEPs amplitudes measured during a fifth finger abduction (ADM being the center muscle). SI was also measured in the traditional way, by comparing ADM MEPs during an index finger flexion and at rest. For the "writing" and "holding a pen" tasks, but not the "holding bottle" task, the MEP amplitudes were significantly smaller when compared to MEP amplitudes when the ADM was the center muscle with the same level of activation. The ADM MEP amplitudes were not different between rest and during index finger flexion. The new method employed here shows, that motor SI can be measured during tonic movements. The findings also show motor SI during two real-life motor tasks: "writing" and "holding a pen". The lack of modulation of MEP amplitude during "holding bottle" task seems to indicate that SI is action specific rather than muscle specific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to investigate the translation styles from the perspective of text complexity and to elucidate underlying factors contributing to the formation of stylistic differences based on individuation. Using SysFan and SPSS22.0 as tools, a combined quantitative and qualitative approach is employed to comparatively analyze the lexical density and grammatical intricacy across the renowned ancient Chinese poem Pipa Xing 琵琶行and its nine English translations. The findings reveal that while the translations exhibit comparable levels of lexical density, disparities in complexity primarily manifest in terms of grammatical intricacy, reflecting distinct text features: spoken, written, and mixed spoken and written, as well as varying degrees of hierarchical and narrative features. The variations in translation styles are intricately linked to the individuation process undergone by translators. The translator's individuation process is modeled to show how a translator mobilizes the meaning resources in the repertoire, which is constrained by the allocation of the cultural reservoir, to re-instantiate the source text in the translated text, while constructing affiliation with the target-reader community. Different translators' allocated repertoires ultimately shape their conscious or unconscious choices in terms of lexicogrammar, thereby generating translated texts characterized by diverse styles. Winnicott was commited to the unconscious as an essential aspect of psychoanalytic theory and practice though he neither elaborated his use nor provided definitions for the term. He argues for the development of the unconscious as one strand of the development of the self, one aspect of what it means to be human. He links this to the psyche-soma and the primacy of the body in attaining individuation and separateness, paying particular attention to how bodily processes of taking in and expelling come to assume a lasting symbolic value in shaping the nascent psyche. In discussing neurotic patients Winnicott follows Freud, but for patients where an early integration either never happened or was interrupted, he proposes that the existence of the unconscious itself may be in doubt. Such a claim has implications for how some analyses should proceed. The article highlights two potentially related areas, the creativity of the unconscious and its links with the incommunicado self as a core of the human being that exists before the organisation of consciousness and unconsciousness. From the mythological point of view, the hero of a literary text is an archetype in the collective unconscious who embodies the collective ideals of a culture while searching for his/her individual identity at the narrative level. In his seminal The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), Joseph Campbell addresses the archetypal function of the hero in three main stages: departure, initiation, and return. Drawing on Campbell’s model, this study examines the journey of the hero in the second storyline of The Seventh Day of Creation, i.e., Al-Sirah al-Mutlaqiyeh. Sirah al-Zatiyeh is a sequence to another study by same authors that examined the first storyline of the novel (Al-Sirah al-Zatiyeh) with regard to the author’s personality and individuation. Proceeding from the analysis of Al-Sirah al-Zatiyeh, this study considers Mutlaq as an antihero based on Campbell’s model and identifies a Hegelian dialectic relationship between the two storylines of the novel. Al-Sirah al-Zatiyeh and Al)Sirah al-Mutlaqiyeh, which respectively represent the individual code and the social code, are designed to showcase an ideal Iraqi society. More precisely, highlighting the opposition in the two main parts of the narrative points at the movement and dynamism desired by the author for changing the future of the country. The article discusses Stéphane Madelrieux's book "Expériences radicales et expériences enracinées," which explores the concept of radical experiences and rooted experiences. The analysis of the so-called gender paradox represents the starting point of a theoretical-interpretative framework which, through a structuralist analysis of gender identity, intends to introduce understanding criteria capable of shedding new light on a paradox that only appears to be such. After examining the achievements of the most recent sociological literature on gender, with particular reference to the multidimensional perspectives that look at gender as a structure in the Giddensian sense, the article proposes an original interpretative framework that explores the potentialities of structuration theory, delving into the dual nature inherent in structures, through the recurrence of "cultural patterns" and "symbolic resources". The second part of the article proposes a theoretical shift that assumes gender identity as a structure, to thematize the processes of social structuring that, starting from modernity, have led to the emergence of individuation processes, then declined, in late-modern societies, into individualization and singularization. The proposed interpretative framework allows, in the concluding part of the article, both to highlight how the gender paradox is not paradoxical at all, and to read the strong polarisation of the public debate around the redefinition of possible gender identifications as an expression of the new cleavage between hyper-culture and cultural essentialism. Adaptationism is often taken to be the thesis that most traits are adaptations. To assess this thesis, it seems we must be able to establish either an exhaustive set of all traits or a representative sample of this set. Either task requires a more systematic and principled way of individuating traits than is currently available. Moreover, different trait individuation criteria can make adaptationism turn out true or false. For instance, individuation based on natural selection may render adaptationism true, but may do so by presupposing adaptationism. A combination of somatic and psychodynamic approaches can reveal embodied ego-states, subpersonalities, and archetypal influences communicating through the body-mind. This paper supports the hypothesis that ego-states and other elements of the psyche manifest somatically. Thus, more attention needs to be given to the body as part of the therapeutic dialogue. This can illuminate egoic manifestations occurring with bodywork - for example, Reich's process for loosening character armoring, and Jung's theory of a universal collective unconscious with its archetypal forces manifesting biologically, leading to soul growth and individuation. Fragmented ego states, archetypal forces, and introjected subpersonalities become conscious as messenger molecules and neural networks attempt to communicate and heal the mind-body split. Meinongianism takes non-existent objects to actually possess the qualities they are characterised as possessing. But many of these qualities are existence entailing. Priest and Berto's modal Meinongianism tries to circumvent this problem by taking Pegasus to possess the property of being winged in some nonactual world. I argue that modal Meingongianism's individuation criterion for fictional and imaginary entities doesn't allow us to rule out that Emma Woodhouse and Batman are identical. I further argue that depending on the status of the 'other worlds' it posits, modal Meinongianism either trivialises Meinongianism's 'characterisation principle' or replaces it with something no less objectionable. Priest and Berto's view, I conclude, if it is tenable, is not a form of Meinongianism; but arguably it is something better: a structuralist account of non-existent objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I want to defend two claims. First, as regards fictional characters (ficta), one must appeal to constitutive properties, i.e., properties that are not only necessary but also essential for a fictum involved by a certain narration; namely, the internal discourse about a fictum. Such properties are indeed the properties that are truly predicated of ficta , either explicitly or implicitly, in that narration. For the appeal to such properties may explain not only i) the truth of important bits of external discourse, i.e., the discourse concerning a fictum outside that narration, but also ii) a fictum 's individuation, i.e., what makes that fictum the object it is. Second, ficta are truly internally predicated such properties, i.e., they possess such properties in a specific, constitutive, mode. For those properties are members of the property sets with which ficta are somehow correlated; indeed, possession of truly internally predicated properties precisely amounts to set-membership. In "Trusting Moral Intuitions" we argued that moral intuitions are trustworthy due to their being the outputs of a cognitive practice, with social elements, in good working order. Backes, Eklund, and Michelson present several criticisms of our defense of a socially conscious moral intuitionism. We respond to these criticisms, defending our claim that social factors enhance the epistemic credentials of moral intuitions, answering worries pertaining to the reliability of the moral intuition practice, and addressing concerns about both the individuation of this practice and the good conditions for its implementation. Categorical processes allow us to make sense of the environment effortlessly by grouping stimuli sharing relevant features. Although these processes occur in both social and non-social contexts, motivational, affective, and epistemic factors specific to the social world may motivate individuation over categorisation of social compared with non-social stimuli. In one experiment, we tested this hypothesis by analysing the reliance on categorical versus individuating information when making investment decisions about social and non-social targets. In an adaptation of the iterative trust game, participants from three experimental groups had to predict the economic outcomes associated with either humans (i.e., social stimuli), artificial races (i.e., social-like stimuli), or artworks (i.e., non-social stimuli) to earn economic rewards. We observed that investment decisions with humans were initially biased by categorical information in the form of gender stereotypes, but later improved through an individuating learning approach. In contrast, decisions made with non-social stimuli were initially unbiased by categorical information, but the category–outcomes associations learned through repeated interactions were quickly used to categorise new targets. In this article, I argue that the main contribution of Hegel's philosophy of right to the contemporary political debate is that it opens a window on the idea that liberalism and individual freedom are incompatible. My main thesis is that the liberal conception of the State and law, structured from a nonrelational account of singularity, ends up denying the individual freedom that it claims to defend. I begin by reconstructing the Hegelian concept of freedom from its most general lines, showing that being free consists in wanting to become someone and not so much in wanting to do something. After showing that the purpose of becoming someone can only be fulfilled in a social medium, I focus on Hegel's critique of the liberal state (as expounded in the section on "civil society"). I argue that civil society structurally impedes individuals from realizing their purpose of becoming someone: the economical interactions of civil society give rise to impersonal and inscrutable mechanisms, which take the social conditions of people's individuation beyond their control. Finally, I claim that (rational) individual freedom consists in being able to thematize and democratically control the very social conditions of individuation through the State and law. This paper addresses some conceptual and organizational questions which bear on the issue of whether those designated mad can produce knowledge from, about, and beyond their experience. Ideas encapsulated in concepts such as lack of reason and epistemic justice are deployed as well as the individuation that characterizes both the clinical encounter and services generally. It is argued that these prevent such knowledge making in itself and dissipate the structures which would enable it. The paper looks at ways in which the silencing of the mad has been broken and at responses which suppress or recuperate such developments. I Language in action: SFL theory across contexts i takes very seriously the role of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in describing how language shapes and is shaped by its social contexts and the consequent use of SFL in informing sociocultural research and practice. The insights in the first two sections of the book are particularly relevant to teachers and teacher educators at elementary, secondary, and tertiary levels, with applied linguists working in translation studies targeted in the final section. A major contribution of this chapter is the demonstration of SFL metalanguage as a resource explaining how a particular language feature is used in a context. A further innovation is the use of SFL resources at the discourse semantic level to "translate" research questions to linguistic patterns, thus making visible the work of the teacher. This study aims to provide a detailed investigation of applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (hereafter SFL) in translation studies from the perspective of instantiation and individuation. Revisiting instantiation and individuation along their history in SFL and introducing the recently developed concepts, the studies on the application of instantiation, individuation and a three-dimensional model are examined respectively. It is noted that instantiation and individuation complement the translation studies by treating the translation process as a linguistic process and interpreting many translation issues in terms of individuality and trajectories of allocation and affiliation, such as the differentiation of equivalence, translation strategies, and translator's choices. This paper presents an account of a Sakhalin Ainu (also Enciw'itah, isolate, Russia and Japan) construction that semantically encodes an agent-patient interaction and that is characterized morphosyntactically by the expression of the agent with an oblique. In the analysis to follow, this construction is named 'impersonal passive' by analogy with a structurally and functionally similar construction attested in the Southern Hokkaidō dialects of Ainu. Keeping the main focus on eastern dialects, the paper takes a primarily semantic approach to the East Sakhalin Ainu impersonal passive and underlines a number of striking structural differences with the Hokkaidō counterpart. In addition, it will be argued that in the north-eastern dialects of Sakhalin Ainu, the impersonal passive can be described as an object-individuation construction (oic), which marks a patient object as referential and definite and has the pragmatic extension of overtly flagging the topicality of this object at the discourse level. As such, the oic compensates for the lack or non-obligatoriness of overt marking for definiteness and topicality in Sakhalin Ainu. The present paper adds to our knowledge on the still under-described Sakhalin variety of Ainu and to our understanding of the verbal and nominal semantics of Ainu more generally, which to date remains a largely unexplored topic. In this paper, through three chapters, we try to deal with the idea of salvation in the psychological context of the Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung. The first chapter will discuss Jung's approach to religious issues, his basic assumptions, and the similarities and differences between theology and psychology. The topic of the second chapter is the trinitarian and quaternary aspects of Jung's doctrine, where the reality of the cross as a central symbol of human individuation but also of the entire cosmic totality comes to the fore. In the third chapter, we will talk about the development of consciousness in God and man, with a special focus on Jung's apparently most dramatic work - »Answer to Job«. The last decade has seen growing interest across human geography in the concept of the unconscious as a key terrain for thinking social life. At the same time, an increasing number of geographers are exploring theorisations of the unconscious that push beyond the subject-predicate tendencies of much psychoanalytic thinking, addressing material and non-representational forces that exceed the confines of a human-centred understanding. This paper extends this work through an engagement with the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon, highlighting three key implications for geographical understandings of the unconscious. First, how it inverts the traditional emphasis on already-constituted psychic individuals to processes of psychic individuation that modulate the emergence and becoming of subjects. Second, how it shifts beyond the psychoanalytical fixation on negativity and repression through an understanding of the transductive potential of unconscious forces to create new forms of life. And third, how it opens a new way of articulating the relation of the psychic and collective as a relation of individuations that he terms the transindividual. Empirically, the paper turns to the subterranean landscape of dreams and desires in the novels of Haruki Murakami, exploring how literary encounters might open a space for thinking the transductive forces of the transindividual unconscious. Feminist thought, despite the importance of its work, has not resolved the phenomenon of women's subordination in the care and education of children, and in society as a whole. Meanwhile, we are witnessing a gradual but continuous process of disconnection between women's bodies and subjectivity, and the conception, pregnancy and birth of children, due to developments in reproductive techniques. Considering this paradoxical tension, the author proposes to return to the very place where this subordination and anticipated rupture occur, to consider whether mothers could find there both the means to reclaim their childbirth experiences and potential levers for emancipation and rebirth, on both a personal and societal level. To this end, she describes, from the point of view of a singular woman, and from an emancipatory perspective, the phenomenological and psychoanalytical itinerary of childbirth by which this woman, in becoming a mother, is born to herself by giving birth to her child. By co‐constituting the universal meaning of childbirth and becoming a philosophical mother, this singular woman operates a real paradigm shift in our representations of the mother and the metaphysical structure of the sexes. The operas of Per Nørgård (b. 1932) embody a search for hidden wisdom and spiritual transcendence characteristic of artists who came to maturity during the 1960s. Gilgamesh (1972) and Nuit des hommes (1996) can be perceived as mirror images that embody visions of universal harmony and discord, and of spiritual wholeness and disintegration. This article analyses Nørgård's use of mythic paradigms and Jungian archetypes to structure the operas. It also examines Nørgård's use of dialectical polarities, including creation and death, the human and the divine, and self and others. In particular, it discusses two concepts derived from the work of Joseph Campbell, the 'hero's journey' and the 'cosmogonic cycle', linking them to Jung's theory of individuation. While Gilgamesh embodies a successful realisation of the hero's journey, the characters in Nuit des hommes become directionless wayfarers in a hostile world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, significant numbers of young middle-class Chinese women have moved abroad to construct an individual 'biography' beyond the unequal gendered expectations of the post-reform context. This article reports on a 2019 qualitative study combining interviews and visual analysis of WeChat and Instagram posts to consider how young Chinese women temporarily living in Australia maintain relationships with upper middle class family who have supported their daughters' overseas ventures. In the wake of sweeping privatization which has encouraged parents to invest in their only children as their 'only hopes', online media has allowed parents to be 'pervasively present' for distant daughters in these transnational movements. We document participants' curated self-branding for family on WeChat as a means of managing and negotiating this sometimes interventionist presence. Our participants' practices reveal a complex juggling act: managing individual desires to optimize the overseas experience but carefully modulating such experience for the parental audience. Post-pandemic follow-up interviews in 2022 also suggest complications in the use of transnational mobility to extend the possibilities of flourishing, with parental pressure to return to a more proximate zone of surveillance in China. Such practices indicate the gendered contradictions young women face: pushed but also desiring to succeed individually in an unequal marketplace, while being further tethered to the family unit. Depth psychotherapists work toward supporting clients in their process of individuation, not only in moving through the tasks of development but also in gaining access to the world of internal experience, identifying the complexes that drive an individual's experience of pain and pleasure, and contacting the shadow, to shift toward a Self-oriented experience of life. To take on these grand tasks, depth psychotherapists strive toward co-creating a therapeutic experience that allows the transcendent function to occur within the course of therapy. This article arises out of questions exploring the relationship between the experience of transcendence and the transcendent function, as well as from concerns about the presentation of spiritual bypassing in clinical work. Considering a pattern common to human nature in which crisis is often followed by the desire to transcend, what is the impact of this impulse on the soul? What is the relationship between transcendence and the transcendent function? Do transcendence and the transcendent function contain each other conceptually? What happens to the soul that enters transcendence, and what is the shadow of that? Where does this shadow show up in the therapeutic process? If the shadow revealed is spiritual bypassing, does the transcendent function integrate that in a way that transcendence does not? How can depth psychotherapists support clients with integrating transcendent experiences and address spiritual bypassing? The author draws upon her clinical reflections alongside scholarship from Carl Jung, James Hillman, Thomas Moore, Jeffrey Miller, Joan Chodorow, Edward Edinger, Sherry Salman, John Welwood, and others. This article introduces a special issue of the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly that focuses on late medieval hylomorphism, a philosophical theory that explores the relationship between matter and form. It explains the concepts of substantial form and prime matter and their role in shaping physical objects. The article acknowledges the lack of research on hylomorphism during this period and aims to address this gap by exploring the ideas of lesser-known figures and their contributions to hylomorphic theory. The special issue includes papers that discuss debates within the hylomorphic framework, such as the nature of composite substances and the ontological commitments involved. It is often thought that Aristotelian hylomorphism was undermined in the early modern era by the external challenges that alternative atomist and corpuscularian matter theories posed. This narrative neglects the fact that hylomorphism was not one homogeneous theory but a fruitful, adaptable framework that enabled scholastic Aristotelianism to continuously transform itself from within and resolve new natural philosophical, metaphysical, and theological problems. I focus on the period of the Counter-Reformation and rise of Protestant scholastic metaphysics. During this time accounting for the individuation of substances within a hylomorphic framework consistent with Aristotle's texts, the doctrine of the Trinity, and Aristotelian physics became both urgent and more challenging. I show that Protestant scholastics who took up influential late sixteenth-century Jesuit accounts of individuation so altered the hylomorphic framework inherited from medieval philosophers that atomism appeared to at least one author as more consistent with Aristotle's metaphysical commitments. This article follows an unorthodox approach to the individuation of quantum particles of the same type. According to this approach, individuation of the components of a composite system of identical particles is done not with the help of unphysical labels (indices) but physically meaningful projection operators. This unorthodox conception requires a modification of the standard notion of entanglement, in order to exclude states whose non-factorizability arises merely from the (anti)symmetrization of a product state. I will report several facts regarding the connections of the modified concept of entanglement with the issue of discernibility. I will also discuss recent experiments involving measurement-induced entanglement, and I will point out that they do not threaten the cogency of the new concept of entanglement. The statistical correlations observed in these experiments are explainable not by the entanglement of the initial state but by the creation of a new, genuinely entangled state by means of a pre-measurement selection. Finally, I will identify and discuss a genuine difference between non-entangled but non-factorizable states of identical particles and ordinary product states, which is that the former but not the latter admits an infinity of alternative and incompatible individuations by single-particle properties. This phenomenon can be accounted for using the concept of emergent particles proposed by Dennis Dieks. One of the most famous metaphysical problems in the philosophy of quantum mechanics concerns the individuality status of quantum entities: are they individuals, or non-individuals? The typical approach to the problem consists in defending one of the options by appealing directly to features of quantum mechanics with the addition, eventually, of theoretical virtues the favoured proposal may have. In this paper, we argue that this strategy is inappropriate, because the problem of individuality is ill formulated in the case of quantum mechanics. In a nutshell, our point is that considerations exclusively from quantum mechanics are too general and generic to grant the level of particularity required for providing for a principle of individuality. Problems of individuality appear only at the level of particular applications of the theory in specific contexts, and in these cases, we shall argue, search for a metaphysical notion of individuality may be substituted by an epistemic notion of individuation. The approach also has the benefits of dissolving the problems created by metaphysical underdetermination on this front.
