This paper presents findings from interviews with US Research Integrity Officers (RIOs) on their overall responsibilities as well as perspectives on Data Management Plans (DMPs). DMPs are formal documents describing the roles and activities for managing data during and after research. DMPs are now a required research criterion by many funding agencies globally. A purposive sample of Research Integrity Officers (RIOs) from the top ten US private and public universities were recruited for interviews using an open-ended questionnaire related to their job duties and perspectives on data management plan implementation and evaluation. Responses from 12 participants were transcribed, anonymized, and coded in NVivo. RIO backgrounds, duties, and perspectives varied. The mode number of staff/ faculty people dedicated to the RIO role at these institutions was a halftime appointment. All RIOs had some responsibilities related to Authorship, Publication, and Inventorship and Integrity and Information with 11 participants also responsible for offering some Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training. Most RIOs assumed that Principle Investigators are responsible for DMP compliance during sponsored projects as well as the long-term data management after a project ends. None of the twelve participants has received any Research Data Management training. Given the sea change in research practices, RIOs should have more training as data-intensive research emerges and DMPs become commonplace.

A study was conducted on the cognitive processes involved in the steps of problem-based learning and the way this pedagogical approach is applied in the health sciences. The objective was to understand more deeply the cognitive process related to student comprehension and its connection with the work done when studying a medical discipline through problem-based learning (PBL). A case study was undertaken with a total of 30 students and an interdisciplinary team composed of a physician and two professionals in the field of education. After a video analysis process of face-to-face teamwork on PBL, it was decided to design and use an advanced organizer to systematize and ease the comprehension process while working with problem scenarios. From its initial application, the students were satisfied with its usefulness, and they provided feedback to improve its format and extend its applicability to other disciplines. It was concluded that not only is it possible to integrate hybrid models in problem-based learning, but also to include variants and auxiliary tools that arise from the cognitive demands and the information management needs of the students, thus favoring the study and the preservation of knowledge.

This paper presents student projects analyzing or using blockchain technologies, created by students enrolled in courses dedicated to teaching blockchain, at two different universities during the 2018- 2019 academic year. Students explored perceptions related to storing private healthcare information on a blockchain, managing the security of Internet of Things devices, maintaining public governmental records, and creating smart contracts. The course designs, which were centered around project-based learning, include self-regulated learning and peer feedback as ways to improve student learning. Students either wrote a research paper or worked in teams on a programming project to build and deploy a blockchain-based application using Solidity, a programming language for writing smart contracts on various blockchain platforms. For select student papers, this case study describes research methods and outcomes and how students worked together or made use of peer feedback to improve upon drafts of research questions and abstracts. For a development project in Solidity, this study presents the issues at hand along with interview results that guided the implementation. Teams shared lessons learned with other teams through a weekly status report to the whole class. While available support for the Solidity teams was not ideal, students learned to use available online resources for creating and testing smart contracts. Our findings suggest that a project-based learning approach is an effective way for students to expand and develop their knowledge of emerging technologies, like blockchain, and apply it in a variety of industries.

Background/Context: Rural districts often struggle to provide organizational structures that support knowledge-building and sharing among educators, contributing to the challenge of change implementation in rural contexts. Although prior scholarship identifies social relationships centered on trust as important for fostering educator learning, we know little about how knowledge regarding a change initiative moves through a district lacking formal organizational learning supports and the role that informal relationships may play in fostering educator knowledge-building for organizational learning in an under-resourced rural context. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study: This article explores the network of knowledge related to a recent change initiative in a rural district striving to implement new instructional practices. Of particular interest is how knowledge is created and shared among educators and the role that organizational structures and informal relationships play in educators' knowledge-building and sharing processes. Research Design: I present a conceptual model that brings together knowledge-creation and structuration theories. Using a sequential mixed methods design, I examine the information and advice interactions and knowledge-building experiences of educators in one rural school district. Analytical methods include social network analysis of survey data and thematic analysis of interview data. Conclusions/Recommendations: Findings suggest that informal relationships were consequential to organizational learning in this district with few formally designated learning supports, though friendship relationships were not consequential. Instead, knowledge-building interactions occurred when individual educators had a positive prior relationship; when mundane organizational structures, such as the master schedule and the assignment of informal or extracurricular roles, facilitated informal interactions; and when educators were motivated to engage in such interactions. This article makes three important contributions to our understandings of organizational learning in this under-resourced rural district context: (1) through mundane organizational structures, principals influence informal knowledge interactions; (2) educator agency is critical for change implementation; and (3) recursive educator interactions may constitute an informal organizational learning structure. This informal structure supporting organizational learning that was invisible to school leadership--fed by recursive informal interactions and supported by mundane organizational structures--represents a fertile area for future research.

This paper explores the significance of schools' data infrastructures as a site of institutional power and (re)configuration. Using 'infrastructure studies' as a theoretical framework and drawing on in-depth studies of three contrasting Australian secondary schools, the paper takes a holistic look at schools' data infrastructures. In contrast to the notion of the 'platformatised' school, the paper details the ad hoc and compromised ways that these school data infrastructures have developed -- highlighting a number of underlying sociotechnical conditions that lead to an ongoing process of data infrastructuring. These include issues of limited technical interoperability and differences between educational requirements and commercially-led designs. Also apparent is the disjuncture between the imagined benefits of institutional data use and the ongoing maintenance and repair required to make the infrastructures function. Taking an institutional perspective, the paper explores why digital technologies continue to complicate (rather than simplify) school processes and practices.

The need for a comprehensive education data governance -- the regulation of who collects what data, how it is used and why -- continues to grow. Technologically, data can be collected by third parties, rendering schools unable to control their use. Legal frameworks partially achieve data governance as businesses continue to exploit existing loopholes. Education data use practices undergo no prior ethical reviews. And at a personal level, students have no agency over these practices. In other words, there is no coherent and meaningful oversight and data governance framework that ensures accountable data use in an increasingly digitalised education sector. In this article, I contextualise the issues arising from education data transactions in one school district in the United States. The case study helps to contextualise what needs governance, who may access education data and how the district governs data use and transactions, emphasising the need for a coherent education data governance but also the limitations of such isolated efforts.

This conceptual article considers data used in the humanities and the human sciences, which are fundamentally different from data in other disciplines, such as the sciences or medicine. Data in the humanities are, however, equally important to study and understand. Humanists and others studying human artifacts often face the dual challenge of both using primary source records (or evidentiary) data and creating records data--non-computational, nonexperimental data, such as those found in manuscripts, websites, and social media. This process generates a complex research data ecosystem that has not previously been studied in the library and information science literature. To support records data work effectively, academic librarians must recognize the nature of the humanities and human sciences data ecosystem and must work with researchers accordingly.

In this article, we reveal the nature and effects of data infrastructures on the authorisation of data that represent students and educational practitioners, including how such data can misrepresent and govern educational policy and practices in sometimes problematic ways. To better understand the governance capacities of data infrastructures, we draw upon notions of discursive practices and materiality, and apply these to a specific school management system, "OneSchool," in Queensland, Australia. We show how data infrastructures both promote and impede educational practitioners' use of data in decision making and daily practices. This includes precluding information about students' (positive) behaviours and omitting important enrolment information about students' Indigenous languages. By doing so, we show how data infrastructures govern in ways that authorise the preclusion and omission of data, thereby representing students and schooling.

Despite increasing calls to build equitable data infrastructures, the education field has yet to have a shared guideline around equitable education data management and stewardship. To address this gap, we propose one framework from the data governance literature: the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data management principles complemented by the CARE (Collective benefits, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics) principles. We argue that making education data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) is a matter of equity and central to equity-focused data reuse. We illustrate the importance of FAIR education data by synthesizing our research experience and literature at the intersection of data governance and equity-focused data use.

The field of language education has experienced a rise in using virtual reality (VR) to support interactive, contextualized, and collaborative language learning in recent years. The current study investigates the effects of auditory, visual, and textual input on speaking and writing in English for Tourism Purposes (ETP) through immersive, scenery-based virtual reality (SBVR) dyadic learning. Adopting a framework on ETP sociocultural, linguistic, and formulaic competence, the researchers designed relevant learning content using audios, images, and verbatim onscreen text on "EduVenture VR" to create an interactive, simulated tour. Thirty-eight English as a foreign language undergraduates participated in this single-group quasi-experiment. Various data sources included speaking and writing pre-, post- and delayed post-tests, a post-intervention survey, and reflections about the VR learning experience. The study reported significant speaking gains in language accuracy, destination promotion, knowledge retention, and replication of ETP language, as well as significant writing improvement in using sophisticated vocabulary, knowledge retention, and replication of ETP language. The study concludes that SBVR warrants positive impact on improving productive ETP skills. Possible factors, limitations, and pedagogical implications for using scenery-based VR in dyadic learning for ETP are discussed. Finally, the study suggests future research directions to combine technology-enhanced language learning theories with multimodal input and material design supported by immersive VR to enhance language production for specific purposes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing field with growing importance in engineering, mainly as it serves to better understand and manipulate big data. However, the literature is sparse on how to educate engineers on the use of AI applications. For many years, a role-playing simulation known as the 'Beer Distribution Game' has been a staple of industrial engineering education and an established vehicle for teaching the fundamentals of supply chain management (SCM) technology. The purpose of the study is to suggest an alternative and effective way to introduce AI and web-based games to students. This paper introduces and applies two types of web-based AI-enabled tools in a second-year industrial engineering classroom including OpexAnalytics (a web-based AI-enabled Beer Distribution Game learning module) and CompareAssess (a web-based AI-enabled tool to promote 'learning by evaluation'). Findings provide evidence of this 5-week web-based AI-enabled learning module's effectiveness in improving student perceptions and learning outcomes related to the intersection between supply chain management and artificial intelligence. The intention for this module was not to sufficiently prepare students for data science and artificial intelligence work assignments; however, this module offers a starting point for further skill development in higher-level coursework.

As immigration polices increasingly entangle with those of higher education (HE), institutions are being positioned as migrant surveillance actors. HE's participation in state-managed international student compliance regimes (ISCRs), for example, raises political and ethical questions, including those concerning the core mission of HE. This paper traces the Canadian ISCR context over the past decade, focusing on the introduction of the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) student compliance reporting requirement in 2014. It argues that Canadian HE's role in surveilling temporary residents on behalf of the state is a problematic bordering practice. It also posits that this new form of surveillance is not necessarily a novel compromise of HE's values, but rather connected to historical patterns of HE's involvement in border imperialism. It questions the benevolence of both Canada's immigration policies towards international students and, ultimately, higher education itself.

With the ubiquity of digital media, managing personal data has become part of our daily lives. Teachers have to manage not only their own data, they also manage students' sensitive data and furthermore have to teach data protection to students. In Switzerland, teacher education colleges have hence started to educate students about privacy and data protection. To do this effectively, it is important to understand pre-service teachers' attitudes about online privacy and to assess their knowledge about protection strategies. Therefore, we tested whether existing scales for attitudes (perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, self-efficacy) about online privacy in social networks can be applied to pre-service teachers and be extended to e-mail and cloud storage. We then explored how these attitudes relate to protection strategies. Except for perceived vulnerability regarding social networks, we succeeded in reliably measuring the three different attitudes in the three domains. Priming did not change the attitudes. However, we did find that self-efficacy was related to the degree to which students report using data protection strategies. This suggests that to motivate pre-service teachers to engage in data protection, teaching them these strategies is more effective than making them more aware of their vulnerability and the severity of data breaches.

There is no single agreed-upon definition of data literacy because expectations of what it means to be data literate varies across contexts. The lack of agreement on a definition of data literacy across contexts is therefore necessary. However, definitions are important. Definitions embody our understanding of concepts and are the foundation for operationalization of concepts. The work reported in the chapter is motivated by the observation that despite no shortage of university graduates, organizations are struggling to find data-literate talent. There is an apparent disconnect between data literacy as taught in the academic domain and data literacy as expected by businesses in the public domain. An exploration of definitions of data literacy in academic and public domains is undertaken to gain insight in why the disconnect exists. A thematic analysis and comparison of definitions in the two domains were conducted. The differences identified provide some broad directions for developing data literacy capabilities in students that better fulfil the needs of business organizations.

Many topics that are taught in supply chain management (SCM) programs include elements of variability and risk. With quantitative tools in particular, it is assumed that the decision makers using the tools are risk neutral, which is typically not the case in real-life decision situations. The topic of an individual's attitude toward risk has received limited attention in SCM literature and is not a high-profile topic in SCM textbooks. The teaching exercise presented in this paper uses two games--roulette and a SCM simulation--to provide students with an assessment of their own attitude toward risk, and in doing so, facilitates a classroom discussion of risk and risk attitude. These games were developed by the authors and can be played either within Excel or a web application.

Utilizing popular murder-mystery texts that transcend boundaries of race, class, age, and sex, students apply Toulmin's 1958 concept of claim, data, warrant (Toulmin, S. E. 2003. The uses of argument. Cambridge University Press). Ultimately, students engage in an activity that demonstrates how argumentation plays a role outside of the college classroom writing assignment. Courses: Introduction to Communication, Argumentation and Debate, Rhetorical Theory, Critical Analysis, and Communication writing courses. It is also applicable to secondary K-12 courses. Objective: The aim of this activity is to introduce concepts of argumentation, including organization of information within written work, evaluation of argumentative data/evidence, and articulation of a well-supported claim. It is designed to help students recognize: (1) how they analyze argumentative messages in their daily lives, specifically by focusing on a popular culture text; and (2) how organization of an argument is structured, with the goal of clearly communicating a message to the audience.

Historic data in analog (or print) format is a valuable resource that is utilized by scientists in many fields. This type of data may be found in various locations on university campuses including offices, labs, storage facilities, and archives. This study investigates whether biological data held in one institutional university archives could be identified, described, and thus made potentially useful for contemporary life scientists. Scientific data was located and approximately half of it was deemed to be of some value to current researchers and about 20% included enough information for the study to be repeated. Locating individual data sets in the collections at the University Archives at the University of Minnesota proved challenging. This preliminary work points to possible ways to move forward to make raw data in university archives collections more discoverable and likely to be reused. It raises questions that can help inform future work in this area.

Using a paperless patient registration project, this teaching case demonstrates an application of the six-step approach in developing a business case for an IT investment. More specifically, this case familiarizes students with the process of developing a solid business case by defining business drivers and investment objectives, identifying and structuring benefits and costs, and estimating return on investment (ROI) based on these values. Students learn, step-by-step, the process from raw data collected from organizational records and internet research to complete managerial decisions based on detailed analysis.

This paper examines the concept of open-source data interoperability in the United States' K-12 education domain, specifically addressing the implications of interoperability for data justice. The term 'data justice' is a relatively recent coinage; the framing and meaning of this term are still evolving, and it has not yet been applied in the educational domain. Building on the nascent research and theorizing in the fields of both data justice and interoperability in educational contexts, this paper provides an overview of the current state of this intersection. Additionally, the authors draw on their direct experiences implementing interoperability initiatives in several U.S. states in order to build a foundational understanding of the risks and opportunities for data justice in the realm of interoperability and data standards in education. The paper concludes with a call for more research to be completed on this complex sociotechnical topic.

The asymmetric information management (AIM) technique enhances verbal lie-detection by encouraging truth tellers (but not liars) to be forthcoming with information. We examined the AIM technique's utility for correctly distinguishing genuine and fabricated statements reported during a virtual interview. Truth tellers (n = 85) honestly reported their recollection of a 30-minute walk. Liars pretended to have engaged in a similar activity (n = 86). Participants were randomly assigned to either the AIM or Control condition and provided either a verbal or written statement. Truth tellers in the AIM condition reported more detailed statements (vs. the Control condition). Liars in the AIM condition reported less detailed statements (vs. the Control condition). More genuine and fabricated statements were correctly classified in the AIM condition (72% accuracy) compared to the Control condition (59% accuracy). No differences between disclosure type emerged. Results support the use of the AIM technique for facilitating verbal lie-detection.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to propose a hybrid model integrating the expectation-confirmation model with the views of cognitive absorption (CA) theory and updated DeLone and McLean information system success model to examine whether quality factors as antecedents to medical professionals' beliefs can affect their continuance intention of the cloud-based e-learning system. Design/methodology/approach: This study's sampling frame was taken from among medical professionals working in hospitals with over 300 beds in Taiwan which had implemented the cloud-based learning management system (LMS) with a blend of asynchronous and synchronous technologies. Sample data for this study were collected from medical professionals at six hospitals in Taiwan. The data for this study were gathered by means of a paper-and-pencil survey, and each sample hospital that participated in this study was asked to identify a contact person who could distribute the survey questionnaires to medical professionals who had experience in using the cloud-based LMS in their learning. A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, and 378 (63.0%) usable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study. Findings: This study proved that medical professionals' perceived learner-content interaction quality, learner-system interaction quality, service quality, cloud storage service quality and learner-human interaction quality all positively caused their perceived usefulness, confirmation and CA elicited by the cloud-based e-learning system, which jointly explained their satisfaction with the system, and resulted in their continuance intention of the system. Research limitations/implications: Several limitations and suggestions may open avenues for future research. First, the limitation of self-reported measures should be considered; future research may combine with qualitative data (e.g. semi-structured, narrative, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews and open-ended questions) to get more complete interpretations of medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention. Next, this study's data were collected from hospitals in Taiwan only; given this study's limited scope, future research may generalize this study's sample to the respondents of other national cultural backgrounds and make cross-country comparisons to enhance the completeness of this study. Finally, this study' results were based on cross-sectional data; future research may use a longitudinal analysis by taking into account the evolution of medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention over time. Originality/value: This study fully evaluates interaction-related and cloud-related quality determinants through an understanding of medical professionals' state of CA in explaining their cloud-based e-learning system continuance intention that is difficult to expound with only their utilitarian perception of the system. Hence, the results contribute to deep insights into an all-round quality evaluation in the field of medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention, and extrinsic and intrinsic motivators are both taken into consideration in this study's theoretical development of medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention to acquire a more comprehensive and robust analysis.

This article argues that the MLIS curriculum should offer information ethics courses that enable future information professionals to develop their imaginative powers through close study and discussion of fiction. LIS students reading ethical theory and fiction bring the two into conversation and as a result reach a better understanding of both. Crucially, this process presupposes the exercise of empathetic imagination, a mental capacity that helps us inhabit other perspectives and modes of being in the world. The paper supports this discussion with evidence from an instructional intervention implemented during an information ethics course within an LIS program at a large public research university.

Information ethics governs the way in which information is created, manipulated, and used. The integration of ethical values in education and coursework has been of interest in many fields, including the discipline of library and information science (LIS). Integrating information ethics in library and information science education and research is essential for preparing the next generation of information professionals for an increasingly diverse and multicultural society. This study examines information ethics from multicultural perspectives by exploring the extent to which LIS faculty view and articulate information ethics in their research and scholarly publications. The study sample was assembled by identifying the top LIS schools in the United States, selecting one LIS faculty member for each school, and examining the research output for each scholar for the use of multicultural and information ethics terminology. The text analysis was conducted using Python. Faculty were selected for the study based on their engagement in multicultural research rather than their minority status. The study results indicate that information ethics is not a primary research focus of LIS scholarship. There is no uniform reference for information ethics, and the most commonly associated terms received low percentage results. The impact of information ethics should be considered in every area of LIS scholarship and practice.

The expansion of research data availability and production has highlighted the need for proper training in data stewardship. Recent years have seen both incentivized and mandated research data management plans enacted by institutions and funding agencies as a way of supporting more open and integrated data-intensive research. Despite the advancement of data management as a practice and profession, those charged with maintaining and curating research data remain understudied. By investigating "what" and "how" data management is realized and "who" is involved, a discussion on the current educational needs, the trajectory of professions, and an assessment of potential educational needs of those entering the workforce can progress. A job analysis survey was developed to validate the tasks identified from two prior interview studies of Earth Science data managers. This survey was distributed to the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners membership and responses validate prior job analyses work as well as provide other educational consideration related to tools and necessary skills to conduct frequent job tasks. The most frequent activities and necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities of current data managers will inform future avenues of inquiry, provide context for current research, and direct research data management education.

Background: Despite the focus of many global education systems on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, research on teachers' concerns about this relatively new educational phenomenon remains scarce. Purpose: This study used the concerns-based adoption model as the theoretical framework to examine the primary concerns expressed by teachers about STEM education and identified a typology of teachers based on the response patterns of their concerns. Sample: A regionally representative sample of 331 primary and secondary school teachers of STEM-related subjects in Hong Kong participated in this study. Design and methods: Data were collected from the teachers through an online, self-reported survey. Latent class analysis was used to profile teachers' concerns about STEM education in this study, and multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to regress the latent class outcome variable on the covariates. Results: The majority of the teachers reported high levels of concern at all five stages of STEM education implementation, namely evaluation, information, management, consequence, and refocusing. Latent class analysis revealed three classes of teachers who were extremely concerned (49.1%), considerably concerned (43.5%), or moderately concerned (7.4%) about STEM education. Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that the teaching sector (primary or secondary) and participation in STEM education training significantly contributed to the prediction of the latent class outcome variable. Conclusion: Given that 96% of the teachers in this study were trained in STEM education through workshops, seminars, courses, and trips, these findings highlight the necessity of designing personalized professional learning experiences for teachers and provide empirically supported evidence to indicate teachers' preparedness and readiness to adopt STEM education as an educational innovation and directions for future research in related areas. This study also informs evidence-based policy making regarding STEM teacher education.

This study seeks to understand the relationship between research data management (RDM) services framed in the data curation life cycle and the production of open data. An electronic questionnaire was distributed to US researchers and RDM specialists, and the results were analyzed using Chi-Square tests for association. The data curation life cycle does associate with the production of open data and shareable research, but tasks like data management plans have stronger associations with the production of open data. The findings analyze the intersection of these concepts and provide insight into RDM services that facilitate the production of open data and shareable research.

The major challenge of most basic schools is inadequate educational resources despite a conscious effort to constantly provide. This is a result of inaccurate data management leading to inappropriate predictions for effective planning. The actual efficiency of a system is determined by its ability to predict real-life data with speed and accuracy. In this work, the neural educational expert system (ES) is evaluated using mathematical models for predicting the availability of resources for the growing school-aged population using a criteria-based formative evaluation to know resource life and its effect on availability. This will help in the decision to add more resources by knowing when and how the resources should be added. Technical mathematical model generation through differential equations is used to fuse the factors affecting the availability of educational resources. The real-life data is used in prediction regarding the actual enrollment of learners and the availability of resources. The model is evaluated and critically analyzed to know the degree of accuracy and the steady state. The findings revealed that the resources decay and attrite at an exponential rate in the long run and the constant number of resources provided cannot cater for the rate of decay, resulting in inadequacy. A proposed algorithm for managing the resources is presented.

Purpose: Building on past studies of library privacy policies, this review looks at how privacy information is shared at universities and colleges in the state of Florida. Beyond the question of whether a library-specific privacy policy exists, this review evaluates what is covered in the policies -- whether topics such as how student data is stored, retained, de-identified and disposed of are broached in the statements, and whether specific data sets covering instruction, reference and surveillance are mentioned. The purpose of this study is to open the door to directed exploration into student awareness of privacy policies and spark conversation about positionality of libraries regarding privacy. Design/methodology/approach: This review was done using a cross-sectional study design through observation of public-facing library privacy policies of higher education institutions in Florida. Findings: Findings include that the majority of Florida academic libraries do not have a public-facing privacy policy. Only 15 out of the 70 schools reviewed had one. A large portion of those came from doctoral universities with associate's colleges having none, and baccalaureate/associate's colleges having only two. The policies that were in place tended to be institution-centered rather than patron-centered. Most categories of listed data collected were in the area of collections, website or computer usage. Originality/value: The value of this review is that it adds to the literature studying privacy policies in academic libraries. Going forward, this research could address statewide practice in privacy policies as well as helping to lay pathways for working with students and other library patrons to gauge their interests and concerns about privacy.

Purpose: This paper aims to address research gaps around third party data flows in education by investigating governance practices in higher education with respect to learning management system (LMS) ecosystems. The authors answer the following research questions: How are LMS and plugins/learning tools interoperability (LTI) governed at higher education institutions? Who is responsible for data governance activities around LMS? What is the current state of governance over LMS? What is the current state of governance over LMS plugins, LTI, etc.? What governance issues are unresolved in this domain? How are issues of privacy and governance regarding LMS and plugins/LTIs documented or communicated to the public and/or community members? Design/methodology/approach: This study involved three components: (1) An online questionnaire about LMS, plugin and LTI governance practices from information technology professionals at seven universities in the USA (n = 4) and Canada (n = 3). The responses from these individuals helped us frame and design the interview schedule. (2) A review of public data from 112 universities about LMS plugin and LTI governance. Eighteen of these universities provide additional documentation, which we analyze in further depth. (3) A series of extensive interviews with 25 university data governance officers with responsibilities for LMS, plugin and/or LTI governance, representing 14 different universities. Findings: The results indicate a portrait of fragmented and unobtrusive, unnoticed student information flows to third parties. From coordination problems on individual college campuses to disparate distributions of authority across campuses, as well as from significant data collection via individual LTIs to a shared problem of scope across many LTIs, the authors see that increased and intentional governance is needed to improve the state of student privacy and provide transparency in the complex environment around LMSs. Yet, the authors also see that there are logical paths forward based on successful governance and leveraging existing collaborative networks among data governance professionals in higher education. Originality/value: Substantial prior work has examined issues of privacy in the education context, although little research has directly examined higher education institutions' governance practices of LMS, plugin and LTI ecosystems. The tight integration of first and third-party tools in this ecosystem raises concerns that student data may be accessed and shared without sufficient transparency or oversight and in violation of established education privacy norms. However, these technologies and the university governance practices that could check inappropriate data handling remain under-scrutinized. This paper addresses this gap by investigating the governance practices of higher education institutions with respect to LMS ecosystems.

This article critically considers these recent developments and political context, proposing an approach to manage sensitive research in the complex contemporary political environment. The first part of the article defines security-sensitive research as research having risk associated with foreign interference, cybersecurity, biosecurity or terrorism. The second discusses recent political developments, foreign interference laws and government reforms seeking to better manage the security risks of sensitive research projects in Australia, and briefly surveying relevant developments in the United Kingdom and the United States. The third part examines the ideological and practical issues for universities in complying with the new government requirements and undertaking research in the contemporary political environment. It argues that universities must engage with ongoing societal developments and government reform to adapt their management of security sensitive research, and balance priorities, such as integrity and academic freedom, with broader critical priorities, such as the national interest.

Education dashboards are a means to present various stakeholders with information about learners, most commonly regarding the learners' activity in online learning environments. Typically, an education dashboard for teachers will include some type of visual aids that encourage teachers to reflect upon learner behavior patterns and to act in accordance to it. In practice, this tool can assist teachers to make data-driven decisions, thus supporting their professional growth, however, so far, the use of education dashboards by teachers has been greatly understudied. In this research we report on two studies related to the associations between the use of education dashboards by elementary school teachers and the teachers' professional growth. We used the framework defined by the International Society for Technology in Education's (ISTE) Standards for Educators. In the first study, we took a quantitative approach (N=52 teachers), using an online self-report questionnaire, and found that the use of dashboards is positively associated with professional growth in the dimensions of facilitator, analyst, designer, and citizen. In the second study, we took a qualitative approach (N=9 teachers), using semi-structured interviews, to shed light on the mechanisms through which teachers benefit from the use of education dashboards.

The purpose of this study is to build a model for Digital Content Management (DCM) in agricultural university libraries in Bangladesh. The model focuses on identifying the necessary tools and techniques required for DCM and finding out the problems and prospects of DCM for enhancing resource sharing among the agricultural universities in Bangladesh. To investigate these issues, surveys were used to collect data from 245 participants, who were students and teachers from seven public agricultural universities in Bangladesh. The findings reveal some hindrances to the establishment of DCM, such as lack of constant power supply, limited bandwidth speed, some users have lacking fundamental IT knowledge and shortage of digital resources, in addition to some suggestions for improving DCM in these libraries. Based on the survey results and related literature, the DCM model for agricultural university libraries of Bangladesh has been proposed and discussed.

Difficulties with academic writing tasks, such as the literature review, impact students' timely completion of graduate degrees. A better understanding of graduate students' perceptions of writing the literature review could enable supervisors, administrators, service providers, and graduate students themselves to overcome these difficulties. This paper presents a case study of graduate students at a secondary campus of a Canadian research university. It describes survey data and results from focus groups conducted between 2014 and 2015 by communications faculty, writing centre staff, and librarians. The focus group participants were Master's and Doctoral students, including students situated within one discipline and those in interdisciplinary programs. The questions focused on the students' experiences of writing the literature review as well as the supports both accessed and desired. Data analysis revealed four themes: (1) literature review as a new and fundamental genre; (2) literature review for multiple purposes, in multiple forms, and during multiple stages of a graduate program; (3) difficulties with managing large amounts of information; and (4) various approaches and tools are used for research and writing. Using an academic literacies approach, the paper addresses implications for campus program development and writing centre interventions and furthers research into graduate students' experiences of writing literature reviews.

While institutions have crisis management plans, they are often focused on face-to-face students and the physical campus. In this case study, researchers investigated the crisis response for online students at one institution after Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston, Texas area in the fall of 2017. While face-to-face students were not severely impacted, more than a thousand online students were in the impact zone and in danger of dropping out. With financial resources and student retention at risk, campus leaders approved a strategy to delay online courses for several weeks. This study examines the experiences of the frontline staff who implemented the plan. Findings suggest that institutions need a proactive crisis plan for online students that includes understanding where this population resides, how different campus units can provide support in a crisis, who should lead the crisis response, and what kind of care can be offered to the frontline responders during the crisis period.
