Abstract

International audience; This paper introduces a procedure for multi-objective optimisation, for compact wideband superdirective antenna array design, using network characteristic modes. The two main objectives considered are the maximisation of the directivity in the end-fire direction, simultaneously with the minimisation of the input reflection coefficient in a large bandwidth. The proposed method is used thereafter for designing a three-element superdirective small Yagi antenna, with an overall dimensions of 0.4 lambda x 0.37 lambda x 0.18 lambda. The length of this mini yagi antenna is 60% shorter than a classical one, with the same performances of gain and bandwidth. The measured results show that the antenna bandwidth, maximum gain, and efficiency are of 11.2%, 8 dBi, and 95% respectively.

Abstract

International audience; An improvement in the catalytic enantioselective allylboration of isatins with 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane in the presence of chiral BINOL derivatives is reported, offering an efficient one-step access to enantioenriched N-unprotected 3-allyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles. This catalytic process is also effective for the crotylboration reaction with enantiomeric ratios (er) up to 97:3, as well as for the asymmetric synthesis of homopropargylic alcohols via an allenyl addition to indoline-2,3-diones. Origins of the high enantioselectivity in chiral BINOL-catalyzed allylboration of isatins were examined by DFT calculations. A hypothetical scenario suggested a crucial internal hydrogen bonding between the amide group (C═O···H-O) and the ethylene hydroxyl of the transient chiral mixed boronate ester, generating a rigid and stabilized system that favors the addition of the allylboron species to the Re face of the ketone function. The key role of the alcohol additive (t-BuOH or t-AmOH) in the enantioselective allylboration reaction of isatins has also been shown on the basis of a kinetics study and computational calculations by favoring the transesterification of the 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane with BINOL via proton transfer processes.

Abstract

International audience; We report a ruthenium(II) bisacetylide complex bearing a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) acetylide arm and a coordinating bipyridyl on the trans acetylide unit. Its coordination with Yb(TTA)(3) centers (TTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) produces a bimetallic complex in which the dithienylethene isomerization is triggered by both ultraviolet (UV) light absorbed by the DTE unit and 450 nm excitation in a transition of the organometallic moiety. The redox behavior arising from the ruthenium(II) bisacetylide system is fully investigated by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry, revealing a lack of stability of the DTE-closed oxidized state preventing effective redox luminescence switching. On the other hand, the photoswitching of ytterbium(III) near-infrared (NIR) emission triggered by the photochromic reaction is fully operational. The electronic structure of this complex in its different states characterized by strong electronic coupling between the DTE and the ruthenium(II)-based moieties leading to metal-assisted photochromic behavior were rationalized with the help of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.

Abstract

International audience; This work focuses on the impact of sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone) (sPEEK) membrane pretreatments on fuel cell performance, starting from two different batches of Fumapem E730 from Fumatech, acquired in 2019 and in 2020. sPEEK membranes are possible lower cost alternatives to PerFluoroSulfonic Acid (PFSA) membranes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) applications. Before use, they must be pretreated to ensure a complete protonic substitution and removal of residual reagents/solvent: the simplest protocol consists in soaking the membrane in an acid solution followed by a rinsing step in water. In addition to this acidification step, hydrothermal (HT) treatments in water at high temperature for a few hours to a few days were also considered herein, as well as a hydro-alcoholic (HA) step, because of their expected effects on membrane nanostructure. Overall, four different protocols were used. The membrane water uptake, water self-diffusion, proton conductivity, and fuel cell performance-under H2/O2-were measured. It was found that in the best case-membranes from the 2020 batch subjected to HA followed by 72 hours HT pretreatments-the fuel cell performances exceeded those obtained with a PFSA membrane (Nafion XL). This is explained by a higher protonic conductivity, probably resulting from a better sPEEK nano-structuration.

Abstract

Van der Waals magnetic materials are building blocks for novel kinds of spintronic devices and playgrounds for exploring collective magnetic phenomena down to the two-dimensional limit. Chromium-tellurium compounds are relevant in this perspective. In particular, the 1$T$ phase of CrTe$_2$ has been argued to have a Curie temperature above 300~K, a rare and desirable property in the class of lamellar materials, making it a candidate for practical applications. However, recent literature reveals a strong variability in the reported properties, including magnetic ones. Using electron microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques, together with local and macroscopic magnetometry approaches, our work sheds new light on the structural, chemical and magnetic properties of bulk 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ exfoliated in the form of flakes having a thickness ranging from few to several tens of nanometers. We unambiguously establish that 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ flakes are ferromagnetic above room temperature, have an in-plane easy axis of magnetization, low coercivity, and we confirm that their Raman spectroscopy signatures are two modes, $E_{2\text{g}}$ (103.5~cm$^{-1}$) and $A_{1\text{g}}$ (136.5~cm$^{-1}$). We also prove that thermal annealing causes a phase transformation to monoclinic Cr$_5$Te$_8$ and, to a lesser extent, to trigonal Cr$_5$Te$_8$. In sharp contrast with 1$T$-CrTe$_2$, none of these compounds have a Curie temperature above room temperature, and they both have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Our findings reconcile the apparently conflicting reports in the literature and open opportunities for phase-engineered magnetic properties.

Abstract

By collecting simultaneously optical and chemical/morphological data from nanoscale volumes, the Photonic Atom Probe (PAP) can be applied not only to the study of the relationship between optical and structural properties of quantum emitter but also to evaluate the influence of other factors, such as the presence of point defects, on the photoluminescence. Through the analysis of multiple layers of InGaN/GaN quantum dots (QDs), grown so that the density of structural defects is higher with increasing distance from the substrate, we establish that the light emission is higher in the regions exhibiting a higher presence of structural defects. While the presence of intrinsic point defects with non-radiative recombination properties remains elusive, our result is consistent with the fact that QD layers closer to the substrate behave as traps for non-radiative point defects. This result demonstrates the potential of the PAP as a technique for the study of the optical properties of defects in semiconductors.

Abstract

International audience; Although the metal-based catalyzed cyanomethylation of aldehydes is well-developed, a similar approach to ketones with acetonitrile derivatives remains a challenge. Thanks to Tolman type complexes, NiIIcomplexes with a pyridine(dicarboxamide) pincer ligand, analternative metal-catalyzed (1-5 mol% catalyst) cyanomethylation of an array of isatins and activated ketones is reported at room temperature. High isolated yields (up to 99%) were obtained not only with the poorly acidic acetonitrile but also with more challenging substituted alkyl cyanide nucleophiles. The in situ generated putative ion paired catalysts [NiCR2CN]-Cat+ likely benefit from the cation part (Cs+ or n-Bu4N+) to facilitate their formation and catalytic activity

Abstract

International audience; Each enantiomer of a chiral pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) FeII complex ([FeLN5R,RCl(MeOH)]Cl·H2O, 1R, or [FeLN5S,SCl(MeOH)]Cl·H2O, 1S) has been obtained using either the R or the S stereoisomer of the macrocyclic pentadentate ligand formed in a template-condensation reaction of the tetraamine N,N′-Bis-{(1R,2R)-[2-(amino)]cyclohexyl}-1,2-diaminoethane, or its (1S,2S) enantiomer, and 2,5-diacetylpyridine, respectively LN5R,R and LN5S,S. Subsequently, the 1-D coordination polymers [FeLN5R,R{FeCl4}], 2R, and [FeLN5S,S{FeCl4}], 2S, were formed by reacting respectively 1R or 1S with 1 equiv of FeCl2(H2O)4. These chain compounds consist of an alternation of PBP and tetrahedral FeII units sharing a Cl atom. Theoretical calculations reveal large magnetic anisotropy for each Fe center but of different type with axial zero-field splitting parameter D of respectively −30 cm–1 and 15 cm–1. The magnetic behavior for the 1-D compound revealed canted antiferromagnetic Fe–Fe interactions (J = −6 cm–1) and SCM behavior characterized by Δ/kB = 42 K with pre-exponential factor τ0 = 2.17 × 10–10 s. It was noted that this SCM behavior was accompanied by a magnetic order leading to a weak ferromagnet (i.e., canted antiferromagnet). The preparations, crystal structures (CCDC references 2214580–2214583), spectroscopic data, magnetic behaviors, and theoretical investigations are reported.

Abstract

International audience; Developing alternatives to platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers is crucial on the way to viable energy provision schemes. However, although it seems difficult to substitute Ir, alternatives exist for Pt at the PEMWE cathode. Here, we report on the synthesis and the characterization of efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) nanocatalysts based on MoS2 supported on high surface area carbon. Citric acid was used as a chelating agent to control the size of the crystallites (1.4 nm) and thus the density of active sites (slab edges). Inspired by successful approaches in catalysis for hydrodesulfurization reactions, conventional 2H MoS2 was sequentially doped with cobalt (Co) then 1 wt. % of Pt. Overpotentials of 188 mV, 140 and 118 mV at 10 mA cm-2 are reported for MoS2/C, Co-MoS2/C and Pt1%-CoMoS2/C, respectively. This result is attributed to the weakening of Hads binding energy of the promoted MoS2 edge active sites (because the promoting atoms are mostly located at the edges). Associated with small metal dissolution rates (monitored in situ, during HER), our findingsdemonstrate that metal promotion (doping) is a promising route to replace platinum by earth-abundant elements in acidic water electrolyzers.

Abstract

International audience; This paper details the first publicly available implementation of the progressive mesh compression algorithm described in the paper entitled "Compressed Progressive Meshes" [R. Pajarola and J. Rossignac, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 6 (2000), pp. 79-93]. Our implementation is generic, modular, and includes several improvements in the stopping criteria and final encoding. Given an input 2-manifold triangle mesh, an iterative simplification is performed, involving batches of edge collapse operations guided by an error metric. During this compression step, all the information necessary for the reconstruction (at the decompression step) is recorded and compressed using several key features: geometric quantization, prediction, and spanning tree encoding. Our implementation allowed us to carry out an experimental comparison of several settings for the key parameters of the algorithm: the local error metric, the position type of the resulting vertex (after collapse), and the geometric predictor. Source Code The proposed implementation is publicly available through the MEPP2 platform [20]. The algorithm can be used either as a command-line executable or integrated into the MEPP2 GUI. The source code is written in C++ and is accessible on the IPOL web page of this article 1 , as well as on the GitHub page of MEPP2 (MEPP-team/MEPP2 project 2).

International audience; CONSPECTUS: The electrochemical conversion of sunlight by photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) is based on semiconductor electrodes that are interfaced with a liquid electrolyte. This approach is highly promising, first, because it can be employed for the generation of a chemical fuel (e.g., H2) to store solar energy that can be used on-demand to generate electricity when the sun is not available. Second, it can be seen as a concept reminiscent of photosynthesis, where CO2 is converted into a valuable feedstock by solar energy. Thus, photoelectrochemical cells are sometimes referred to as "artificial leaves". Silicon, being the main semiconductor in the electronics and photovoltaic sector, is a prime candidate to be used as the light absorber and the substrate for building photoelectrochemical cells. However, Si alone has "poor-to-no photoelectrochemical performance". This is caused by its weak electrocatalytic activity for cathodic reactions (namely, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the CO2 reduction reaction (CDRR), and the N2 reduction reaction) and by its deactivation in the anodic regime, prohibiting its use for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This latter reaction is essential for supplying electrons to generate a solar fuel. Due to these problems, layers that both protect and are catalytically active are typically employed on Si photoelectrodes but require rather sophisticated manufacturing processes (e.g., atomic layer or electron beam deposition), which hinders research and innovation in this field. Nevertheless, our group and others have demonstrated that these layers are not always required and that highly active and stable Si-based photoelectrodes can be manufactured using simple wet processes, such as drop casting, electroless deposition, or aqueous electrodeposition. In this Account, we first introduce the topic and the possible structures that can be easily obtained starting from commercial Si wafers. Then, we discuss strategies that have been employed to manufacture photocathodes based on p-type Si. Among these, we describe Si photocathodes coated with metal, inorganic compounds such as metal sulfides, and more original constructs, such as those based on macromolecules composed of a catalytic Mo3S4 core and a polyoxometallate macrocycle. Also, we discuss the elaboration and the advantages of Si photocathodes obtained by grafting organometallic catalysts which are promising candidates for reaching excellent selectivity for the CDRR. Then, the manufacturing of photoanodes based on n-Si is reviewed with an emphasis on those prepared by electrodeposition of a transition metal such as Ni and Fe. The effect of the catalyst morphology, density, and Si structuration is discussed, and future developments are proposed.

Abstract

International audience; The well-known synthesis of the two polymorphs of the {[Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4)}n spin crossover coordination polymer is explored with new template-free methods that allow a control over the local synthetic conditions. A “one-pot” synthesis approach is developed, in which the solid reactants are mixed together before the addition of the solvent, which is expected to generate instantaneous supersaturation conditions favoring the nucleation of particles over their growth. In a second method, the addition of ultrasound pulses promotes the appearance of local “hot spots” that affect the local temperature and allow exploring a different region of the concentration–temperature phase diagram, leading to an increase in the phase purity of the product. These two syntheses are compared to the classical method in which the reactants are first dissolved in separate solutions before being mixed. The use of a one-pot synthesis, with or without ultrasound pulses, induces a downsizing of the particle size by a factor of 500 on their volume. The addition of ultrasound pulses allows moving from a mixture of polymorphs I and II of this compound to the pure phase I. These approaches open the way to more studies on the control over the size or phase purity in such molecular compounds, without the use of any surfactant.

Abstract

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition remains challenging for computer vision systems. Paragraph text recognition is traditionally achieved by two models: the first one for line segmentation and the second one for text line recognition. We propose a unified end-to-end model using hybrid attention to tackle this task. This model is designed to iteratively process a paragraph image line by line. It can be split into three modules. An encoder generates feature maps from the whole paragraph image. Then, an attention module recurrently generates a vertical weighted mask enabling to focus on the current text line features. This way, it performs a kind of implicit line segmentation. For each text line features, a decoder module recognizes the character sequence associated, leading to the recognition of a whole paragraph. We achieve state-of-the-art character error rate at paragraph level on three popular datasets: 1.91% for RIMES, 4.45% for IAM and 3.59% for READ 2016. Abstract

International audience; Hypothesis: Due to their unique quantum yield and photostability performances, quantum nanoplatelets are very promising building blocks for future generations of displays. The directed assembly of such colloidal nano-objects in the shape of micro-pixels is thus the next mandatory step to reach this goal. Selectively trapping them on electrostatically charged patterns by nanoxerography could be a versatile and appealing strategy but requires a full understanding of the assembly mechanisms in order to make the most of their integration.Experiments: We propose an experimental platform based on a smart resealable microfluidic chip coupled to an inverted optical fluorescence microscope and a high-speed camera for in situ access of such assembly mechanisms, using CdSe/CdZnS quantum nanoplatelets as model nano-objects. The photoluminescence signal of the nanoplatelet patterns is thus recorded in real time during their assembly and data extracted after image processing.Findings: The coupling of experimental results and numerical simulations evidences the main role of advection at the origin of this directed nanoparticle trapping. Deep understanding of the involved mechanisms and tuning of experimental parameters allow to make high resolution quantum nanoplatelet based micro-pixels with a fine control of their lateral and vertical dimensions.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a new drivers’ warning application through personalized Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum Code-Division Multiple Access (DSSS-CDMA) transmissions, performed using the FM radio broadcasting infrastructure is presented. The proposed application is designed to simultaneously transmit a maximum of 15 low-resolution image notifications together with standard FM radio broadcasting in different geographical areas. The application is intended to warn drivers of significant driving events in major traffic areas of a country. The proposed solution is low-cost and rapid to put into practice because the modifications, both on the transmission infrastructure and on the receiver’s side, are relatively easy to implement. The transmission of image notifications is performed in subsidiary bands of commercial FM radio systems. The receiver is implemented using the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) paradigm and is able to extract the audio signal (corresponding to the usual FM transmission) and the data component, depending on the geographical area in which the vehicle is located. The receiver is based on a novel implementation of a modified Costas loop using two new nonlinear limiters. Appropriate image notification is selected using a specific decoding key, generated according to the geographical position of the vehicle. The performance of the data transmission system is analyzed by plotting the Bit Error Rate (BER) versus the signal-to-noise ratio of the data signal for different numbers of image notifications simultaneously transmitted. The proposed radio communication system was validated through an experimental setup based on Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices driven by MATLAB/Simulink software.

Abstract

International audience; Eventual consistency is a consistency model that favors liveness over safety. It is often used in large-scale distributed systems where models ensuring a stronger safety incur performance that are too low to be deemed practical. Eventual consistency tends to be uniformly applied within a system, but we argue a demand exists for differentiated eventual consistency, e.g. in blockchain systems.We propose UPS to address this demand. UPS is a novel consistency mechanism that works in pair with our novel two-phase epidemic broadcast protocol GPS to offer differentiated eventual consistency and delivery speed. We propose two complementary analyses of the broadcast protocol: a continuous analysis and a discrete analysis based on compartmental models used in epidemiology. Additionally, we propose the formal definition of a scalable consistency metric to measure the consistency trade-off at runtime. We evaluate UPS in two simulated worldwide settings: a one-million-node network and a network emulating that of the Ethereum blockchain. In both settings, UPS reduces inconsistencies experienced by a majority of the nodes and reduces the average message latency for the remaining nodes.

Abstract

International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

Abstract

International audience; Background: The objective of this study was to demonstrate that synchrotron K-edge subtraction tomography (SKES-CT) can simultaneously track therapeutic cells and their encapsulating carrier, in vivo, in a rat model of focal brain injury using a dual-contrast agent approach. The second objective was to determine if SKES-CT could be used as a reference method for spectral photon counting tomography (SPCCT). Methods: Phantoms containing different concentrations of gold and iodine nanoparticles (AuNPS/INPs) were imaged with SKES-CT and SPCCT to assess their performances. A pre-clinical study was performed in rats with focal cerebral injury which intracerebrally received AuNPs-labelled therapeutic cells encapsulated in a INPs-labelled scaffold. Animals were imaged in vivo with SKES-CT and back-to-back with SPCCT. Results: SKES-CT revealed to be reliable for quantification of gold and iodine, whether alone or mixed. In the preclinical model, SKES-CT showed that AuNPs remained at the site of cell injection, while INPs expanded within and/or along the lesion border, suggesting dissociation of both components in the first days post-administration. Compared to SKES-CT, SPCCT was able to correctly locate gold, but not completely located iodine. When SKES-CT was used as reference, SPCCT gold quantification appeared very accurate both in vitro and in vivo. Iodine quantification by SPCCT was also quite accurate, albeit less so than for gold. Conclusion: We here provide the proof-of-concept that SKES-CT is a novel method of choice for performing dual-contrast agent imaging in the context of brain regenerative therapy. SKES-CT may also serve as ground truth for emerging technologies such as multicolour clinical SPCCT.

Abstract

International audience; On-chip study of blood flow has emerged as a powerful tool to assess the contribution of each component of blood to its overall function. Blood has indeed many functions, from gas and nutrient transport to immune response and thermal regulation. Red blood cells play a central role therein, in particular through their specific mechanical properties, that directly influence pressure regulation, oxygen perfusion, or platelet and white cells segregation towards endothelial walls. As the bloom of in-vitro studies has led to the apparition of various storage and sample preparation protocols, we address the question of the robustness of the results involving cell mechanical behavior against this diversity. The effects of three conservation media (EDTA, citrate and glucose-albumin-sodium-phosphate) and storage time on the red blood cell mechanical behavior are assessed under different flow conditions: cell deformability by ektacytometry, shape recovery of cells flowing out of a microfluidic constriction, and cell flipping dynamics under shear flow. The impact of buffer solutions (phosphate-buffered saline and density-matched suspension using iodixanol/Optiprep) are also studied by investigating individual cell flipping dynamics, relative viscosity of cell suspensions and cell structuration under Poiseuille flow. Our results reveal that storing blood samples up to seven days after withdrawal and suspending them in adequate density-matched buffer solutions has in most experiments a moderate effect on the overall mechanical response, with a possible rapid evolution in the first three days after sample collection. SIGNIFICANCE Blood is in intimate contact with all organs in the body, supplying oxygen, nutrients and drugs while removing waste. It carries cells involved in immune response, wound repair and tumor dissemination. Blood is easily collected, revealing the presence of disease through biomarker analysis. It is storable and transfusable. Thus, blood is the subject of many in-vitro studies for research and medical purposes. Guidelines associated to sample preparation or storage conditions have been established, but these may affect its mechanical behavior. In this collaborative study, we provide new guidelines to minimize the impact of specific experimental requirements (e.g. density matching, blood freshness) by focusing on the single or collective motion of red blood cells in a large range of flow conditions.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we quantify microscale heating at the level of cutaneous nerves and capillaries due to continuous and pulsed plane-wave exposure at 60 GHz. The thermal properties of the nerves and capillaries were derived using mixture equations based on their water content. The electromagnetic problem was solved in conjunction with Pennes bioheat equation and Arrhenius equation using finite element method to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of temperature along with thermal damage within cutaneous nerves and capillaries. Although, the maximum power density within the nerve (41.6 kW/m 3 ) and capillary (20 kW/m 3 ) was 37.3% and 30.2% higher than surrounding skin for a continuous exposure at 10 W/m 2 , the peak temperature elevation ( ΔT ) within the nerve (93.3 n°C) and capillary (90.7 n°C) occurred after 5 μ s and 10 μ s of exposure and was 19.2% and 17.7% higher than surrounding skin, respectively. The nerve and capillary attained thermal equilibrium with skin after roughly 10 ms. The maximal ΔT within the nerve (0.5 °C) and capillary (0.25 °C) due to nano- and micro-second 60 GHz pulses with highest fluence (0.48 kJ/m 2 ) permitted under ICNIRP guidelines was 34% and 24% higher than in the surrounding skin. Ten 3 μs 60 GHz pulses (power density = 13.4 GW/m 2 ) separated by 10 s of cooling period were used to demonstrate the possibility of selective thermal ablation of cutaneous nerves [damage index ( Ω )=1.1)] without damaging skin ( Ω = 0.15). The results provide valuable insights into local millimeter-wave induced heating within various skin substructures.

Abstract

International audience; Due to their unique three-dimensional framework and intriguing electronic properties, [2.2]paracyclophanes (pCps) have been employed over the years as building blocks in materials science for the development of organic light-emitting diodes and non-linear optical systems. In addition, depending on their substitution patterns, [2.2]paracyclophanes can display planar chirality and are nowadays considered as useful scaffolds for the development of original circularly poliarized luminescence (CPL) emitters. This perspective gives an overview on the synthesis and characterization of different families of compact luminescent compounds derived from planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes. The chiroptical properties of these small molecules are described, with a particular focus on their ability to emit circularly polarized luminescence in solution. Some future prospects on the design and potential applications of CPL emitters derived from pCps are finally presented.

Abstract

International audience; Wastewater from the Antibiotical-Saidal pharmaceutical plant (Medéa) was pretreated by coagulation-flocculation using copper sulfate (CuSO4), iron chloride (FeCl3), and mixture of the two salts combined in a 1:1 (v/v) ratio in the present study. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize pH and coagulant dosage as independent variables, while dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorbance at 254 nm (UV 254), and turbidity were provided as dependent variables in the central composite design (CCD). Then, the databases of the three treatments were combined in a single database to create a general model valid for the three treatments at the same time, and to predict the reduction rates of DOC, UV254, and turbidity, using the Gaussian process regression coupled with the dragonfly optimization algorithm (GPR-DA). To have the best model obtained between RMS and GPR-DA, an experimental validation was carried out after having had the optimal conditions of each type of coagulant, using the multi-objective optimization technique. The results of the experimental validation show the superiority of the GPR-DA model compared to the RSM model. Also, the results show that the mixed coagulant (CuSO4 + FeCl3) obtain better results than CuSO4 or FeCl3 alone with a treatment efficiency equal to 92.68% at pH = 5 and dosage = 600 mg/L, and the reductions in DOC, UV 254 and turbidity are 97.32%, 82.90% and 96.47%, respectively. © 2022 The Institution of Chemical Engineers

Abstract

International audience; We provide a data-driven stabilization approach for input-saturated systems with formal Lyapunov guarantees. Through a generalized sector condition, we propose a convex design algorithm based on linear matrix inequalities for obtaining a regionally stabilizing datadriven static state-feedback gain. Regional, rather than global, properties allow us to address non-exponentially stable plants, thereby making our design broad in terms of applicability. Moreover, we discuss consistency issues and introduce practical tools to deal with measurement noise. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of our approach and its sensitivity to the features of the dataset.

Abstract

International audience; Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are increasingly used in our daily life. Among these technologies, LoRa is widely used for low power IoT data collection in wide areas. LoRa typically operates in sub-GHz bands which are region-specific, and thus has limited worldwide applications. The version of LoRa developed for the 2.4 GHz ISM band has spurred recent interest in the scientific community, as it enables the use of worldwide frequency channels. However, it requires the coexistence with numerous concurrent technologies within this 2.4 GHz band, and an evolution of the MAC and networking protocols for utilizing LoRaWAN connectivity. In this paper, we make the first experimental comparison between LoRa sub-GHz and LoRa 2.4 GHz in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. We show that LoRa 2.4 GHz can have a communication range of more than 2 km outdoor, and it can achieve a packet delivery rate of at least 0.98 for a distance of up to 39 meters indoor with the presence of obstacles. We also make an extensive discussion on the researches challenges that need to be addressed in order to fully take advantage of this new technology.

Abstract

Projection-based control (PBC) systems have significant engineering impact and receive considerable scientific attention. To properly describe closed-loop PBC systems, extensions of classical projected dynamical systems are needed, because partial projection operators and irregular constraint sets (sectors) are crucial in PBC. These two features obstruct the application of existing results on existence and completeness of solutions. To establish a rigorous foundation for the analysis and design of PBC, we provide essential existence and completeness properties for this new class of discontinuous systems.

Abstract

International audience; In this work we present the design and fabrication in metallic 3D-printing of a compact conformal slotted waveguide antenna array operating in the Ku-band. The application objective, although not limited only to this, is the optimisation of an antenna element which by stacking will be able to form a quasi-cylindrical sector. A beamforming network will be used for beam-steering in the elevation plane as coverage in the azimuthal plane is guaranteed by the conformal geometry. The compact design of the antenna element is therefore of great significance. For this reason, a direct feeding scheme by a coaxial connector is adopted. The antenna has been optimized following multiple parametric analyses of its geometrical parameters for the enhancement of the bandwidth, return losses and realized gain. The antenna was fabricated with Selective Laser Melting in aluminium and the experimental results agree well with the numerically calculated ones. The proposed CSWAA exhibits a reflection coefficient below -10 dB, realized gain above 14 dBi, as well as good cross-polarization and side-lobe level over a relative bandwidth of 8%.

Abstract

International audience; Selective C-H functionalizations aiming at the formation of new C-N bonds is of paramount importance in the context of step-and atom-economy methodologies in organic synthesis. Although the implementation of noble metal catalysts is prevalent, more benign cobalt pre-catalysts have recently appeared promising. However, they sometimes feature selectivity issues that limits its applicability in late-stage functionalization. Herein, we report on a highly reactive ruthenium-based catalytic system displaying excellent levels of mono-, regio-and site-selectivity exploiting a series of biologically-relevant cyclic amides as weak directing groups. The use of dioxazolone derivatives as the amidating reagent overcomes the issues encountered in the use of unstable azide derivatives for such transformations and it enables to perform these reactions under very mild reaction conditions (air, 40 o C). Moreover, a combination of deuteration experiments and a comparative study with different types of directing groups highlight the relevance of weak amide directing groups for enabling formation of six-membered cycloruthenate intermediates in key elementary steps of the catalytic cycle. In addition, DFT computational calculations were carried out for the first time for studying ruthenium-catalyzed C-N bond-forming processes via C-H activation assisted by weak directing groups, thereby elucidating the origin of the regio-and site-selectivity.

International audience; A series of (NHC)(cod)Ir(I) complexes bearing NHC-carboxylate ligands were efficiently synthesized and fully characterized. Their solid-state structures confirmed the bidentate coordination mode of these LX-type NHC ligands. These unprecedented iridium(I) complexes demonstrated efficient catalytic activities in dehydrogenative directed C-H silylation of arenes, and allowed for excellent ortho-selectivity control with aromatic silylating agents.

Abstract

International audience; Cosserat rod theory proved efficient modeling performances in robotics, especially in the context of continuum robots, in the past decade. The implementation of such theory is far from being unique and straightforward. We consider the illustrative example of multi-segment, general routing tendon actuated continuum robots in their nominal static operating regime. This paper details two main approaches based on Cosserat rod modeling, namely the Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches. We provide a walk-through guide regarding theoretical derivations and numerical implementation of both approaches, together with a proof of equivalence. This comparative study is supplemented with novel contributions and extensions of each approach and in-depth discussion of their performances and applicability, as well as highlighting their special features.

International audience; We discuss controller designs for asymmetric saturated discrete-time linear systems. Under the assumption that a locally stabilizing controller of the origin is known, we augment the original controller with an additional term that vanishes in a neighborhood of the origin. The augmented controller outperforms the original controller in terms of the estimate of the region of attraction. The paper translates the results discussed in Braun et al. (2022a,b), from the continuous-time setting to the discrete-time setting, and numerically verifies that the results derived for continuous-time systems are recovered if the discrete-time system is obtained through an Euler discretization of a continuous-time system with a sufficiently small sampling rate.

Abstract

International audience; The recent paper by Deng et al. showed that a copper sulphide with Cu7Sn3S10 composition is a promising thermoelectric material reaching a figure of merit ZT of 0.8 at 750 K via Cl doping. However, structural reinvestigations of the Cu7Sn3S10 sample (i.e., Cu2.10Sn0.90S3) prepared in the reported conditions show that the phase of interest is not tetragonal (space group I (4) over bar 2m, a(t) = 5.4164 angstrom, c(t) = 10.832 angstrom), but crystallizes in the cubic symmetry (space group P (4) over bar 3n, a(c) = 10.832 angstrom) with a composition close to Cu22Sn10S32 similar to the results published by Pavan Kumar et al. These observations indicate that the main phase around the composition Cu7Sn3S10 is cubic, and a revision needs to be imposed for the understanding of the relationships between the structure and thermoelectric properties in this family.

International audience; Co-prime array configuration is popular in therecent development of array signal processing. However, theassumption of Gaussian noise in most co-prime array process-ing research leads to model mismatch in practical scenariosof impulsive noise, therefore has an adverse impact on theestimation of direction of arrival (DOA) of the incoming sources.Moreover, co-prime array builds an enlarged virtual array byvectorizing the covariance matrix of the received signals, wherethe equivalent received signals of the virtual array have only asingle snapshot. In this paper, we propose an enhanced fractionallow-order method (EFLOM) for co-prime array configurationin the scenarios of impulsive noise, from the perspective ofpseudo snapshot augmentation. Since impulsive noise does nothave finite second-order statistics or high-order cumulant, weconstruct a series of equivalent covariance matrices by usingphased fractional low-order moments with different orders of thereceived signals. Then, the vectorization of the multiple equivalentcovariance matrices can be considered as the equivalent receivedsignals of virtual array with multiple pseudo snapshots. Sincemultiple pseudo snapshots are constructed from the same sources,additional spatial smoothing preprocessing operations are stillneeded for enforced decorrelation. In this paper, we propose animproved spatial smoothing (ISS) technique by applying the in-formation of both autocorrelation and cross subarray correlationin the covariance matrix. Afterwards, the classical multiple signalclassification (MUSIC) is applied for the estimation of DOAs.In addition, the proposed method can also be extended to theother sparse array geometrics. The performance of the proposedmethod is theoretically verified and simulations are providedto show its effectiveness in terms of the generalized signal tonoise ratio (GSNR), parameter of impulsive noise, and angleseparation. Simulation results show that the proposed method cangreatly improve the resolution, accuracy, and degrees of freedom(DOFs) in DOA estimation in presence of impulsive noise.

Abstract

International audience; The hygrothermal behavior of a bio-based multilayered wall has been studied by numerical simulations. The key point of these research investigations was to properly describe the hygrothermal transfers occurring inside the studied wall solution. In previous work, the case of the wall subjected to a given real climate (Wroughton HIVE demonstrator, UK, Feb 2018) has been investigated. The present work, focused on the moisture regulation capacity of the wall, considers an improved kinetics model of sorption, different layer configurations, one additional climate (Bordeaux, FR, Apr 2008) and the effect of indoor cyclic loads. Compared to the classical approach, the local kinetics approach results in prediction of stronger and steeper hygric dynamics with larger relative humidity variations at small time scales. The study of the different wall configurations allows to determine the best one in terms of moisture damping: the vapor control membrane is advantageously removed provided the OSB3 12 mm layer is replaced by an OSB4 18 mm layer. Moreover, the simulations show that the Moisture Buffer Value characteristic of each material layer is not a sufficient criterion to evaluate hygric performance of the wall; strong hygric interactions occur with the layer's permeability independently of its sorption capacity. Finally, water content hysteresis phenomena are studied and it appears that under usual operating conditions, they can be ignored by adjusting the layers' permeabilities for adequate fits on the Moisture Buffer Value tests.

International audience; We consider a wave equation with a structural damping coupled with an undamped wave equation located at its boundary. We prove that, due to the coupling, the full system is parabolic. In order to show that the underlying operator generates an analytical semigroup, we study in particular the effect of the damping of the "interior" wave equation on the "boundary" wave equation and show that it generates a structural damping.

Abstract

International audience; The incorporation of electron-withdrawing pyrimidine rings within π-extended systems allows access to a wide variety of fluorescent push-pull molecules that display emission properties highly sensitive to external stimuli. A suitable design of these compounds leads to interesting materials for a variety of optoelectronic applications. In this context, a vast number of arylvinylpyrimidine-based chromophores have been extensively studied during the last two decades. Along with the main synthetic pathways, this review summarizes the photophysical features of these active compounds having great potential and their most important applications as sensors and luminescence materials.

Abstract

A compact asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS)-fed monopole antenna is presented, which operates within the Bluetooth and UWB frequency bands with the capability to simultaneously reject the lower WLAN interfering band. The antenna consists of an inverted right triangle patch monopole loaded by open-ended L-shaped slits not only to produce the additional 2.4 GHz passband to the UWB design but also to achieve stopband characteristics around 5.2 GHz. The conceptual equivalent circuit model as well as characteristic mode analyses are carried out in the design evolution process. The proposed antenna has an overall size of only 20 mm x 10 mm, having the smallest area among the so far developed designs, which can be easily integrated within any wireless gadgets. A prototype is fabricated and measured to validate the design, demonstrating the predicted behavior fairly achieved by full-wave analysis. The antenna -10 dB operating bandwidth ranges from 2.38 to 2.42 GHz and from 3.35 to 11 GHz while rejecting from 4.69 to 5.2 GHz. Unlike the unwanted stopband, where the radiation characteristics are adequately deteriorated, the proposed antenna fairly provides stable omni-directional radiation patterns in the H-plane, and has an average efficiency (gain) of 87.3% (2.6 dBi) in the desired passband. As far as the antenna transient behavior is concerned, an adequate measured (simulated) system fidelity factor of 0.7 (0.68) is achieved for the transmission of impulse-type UWB signals in the face-to-face configuration.

Abstract

International audience; We address the problem of setpoint regulation for cascaded minimum-phase linear systems interconnected through a scalar hysteresis, modeled as a Prandtl-Ishlinskii operator. Employing well-posed constrained differential inclusions to represent the hysteretic dynamics, we formulate the control problem in terms of stabilization of a compact set of equilibria depending on the hysteresis states. For our design, we firstly consider a proportional-integral controller for linear systems with hysteretic input, and provide model-free sufficient conditions based on high-gain arguments for closed-loop stability. Then, the controller is dynamically extended to obtain an inversion-free stabilizer of the overall cascade. For the presented schemes, we prove robust global asymptotic stability of a compact set that ensures setpoint regulation, regardless of the hysteresis states.

International audience; The prototypical [Ni(dmit)(2)] complex (dmit: 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) is modified here by combining the N-R substitution found in [Ni(R-thiazdt)(2)] complexes (R-thiazdt: N-alkyl-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) and the selone substitution found in [Ni(dmiSe)(2)] complex (dmiSe: 1,3-dithiole-2-selone-4,5-dithiolate) to give a novel N-methyl substituted, radical anionic complex formulated as [Ni(Me-thiazSe-dt)(2)](1-) (Me-thiazSe-dt: N-methyl-thiazoline-2-selone-4,5-dithiolate). Both this anionic complex and its mixed-valence Et(4)N(+) salt crystallize with a rare cis arrangement of the two dithiolene ligands around the Ni atom. In the 1 : 2 [Et(4)N][Ni(Me-thiazSe-dt)(2)](2) salt, the complexes organize into dimerized chains well isolated from each other, giving the salt a strong one-dimensional character. It shows however a high RT conductivity of 4.6 S cm(-1) and small activation energy of 33 meV, indicating a possible Mott insulator behavior, which is not suppressed under pressures up to 10 GPa.

Abstract

International audience; A chiral 3D coordination compound, [Gd2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2], arranged around a dinuclear Gd unit has been characterized by X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption measurements in the context of density functional theory studies. Core level photoemission of the Gd 5p multiplet splittings indicates that spin orbit coupling dominates over j–J coupling evident in the 5p core level spectra of Gd metal. Indications of spin–orbit coupling are consistent with the absence of inversion symmetry due to the ligand field. Density functional theory predicts antiferromagnet alignment of the Gd2 dimers and a band gap of the compound consistent with optical absorption.

Abstract

With a continuous-time formulation of the multihop decomposition, we propose a distributed hybrid observer for a sensor network where the plant and local observers run in continuous time and the information exchange among the sensing nodes is sampled-data. Process disturbances, measurement noise and communication noise are considered, and we prove that under some necessary detectability assumptions the observer gains can be tuned to guarantee exponential ISS with a prescribeda convergence rate. Simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed observer.

Abstract

International audience; Hybrid organic–inorganic lead-free halide materials have attracted widespread attention due to their applications in the field of optoelectronics. Herein, we synthesized a new binuclear Pd(II) complex templated by 3-bromopropyltrimethylammonium, which undergoes a high-temperature phase transition at about 428 K. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed this reversible transformation with a large heat hysteresis of 65 K, which depicts a typical first-order phase transition in the compound. The X-ray crystal structure reveals that this material is composed of anionic dimers and organic cations. The complex, [(CH3)3N(CH2)3Br]2Pd2Cl6, crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c. The inorganic layer, built up by two crystallographically independent [Pd2Cl6]2− dimer units, is connected to the [(CH3)3N(CH2)3Br]+ organic cations through C–H···Cl hydrogen bonds, which lead to a 3D supramolecular architecture. Each Pd atom is coordinated to two bridging Cl atoms in a slightly distorted square planar geometry. Furthermore, experimental results confirm the semiconducting behavior of [(CH3)3N(CH2)3Br]2Pd2Cl6 with an optical bandgap of ∼2.2 eV. The electric properties were investigated in detail with the study of impedance and AC conductivity. Based on the Elliot theory, the conduction mechanism was deduced with two models: the overlapping polaron model (OLPT) is the right model describing the conduction in phase I, and the correlated barrier hopping model (CBH) describes the conduction in phase II.

Abstract

In this paper, we study a paratransit application in which children are transported every day from their homes to their special schools or medical-social establishments. To optimize this transportation system, the establishments collaborate to propose a joint transportation plan. We propose a new algorithm to jointly build vehicle routes that visit several establishments and simultaneously set the establishments’ opening hours. This algorithm combines a large neighborhood search, the resolution of a route-based model, and the progressive shrinkage of the planning window. It is applied to a real case from the area of Lyon in France, including 34 schools and 575 heterogeneous users served by a heterogeneous fleet of reconfigurable vehicles. On average, we show that in addition to the 10% of saving that can be expected by sharing vehicle routes between schools, 7% of additional savings can be achieved by school bell adjustment. This cost saving also decreases average user ride times and the number of vehicles required, creating longer routes that are more attractive for driver services. Abstract

International audience; Hole making on stacked aerospace materials is a major operation during aircraft assembly which poses significant challenges during manufacturing because of different material machinability. Strategies involving smart machining including adapting proper cutting conditions using real time monitoring can lead to significant improvements. This paper is a continuation of our research that uses data map methodology characterized by different specific force regions for workpiece material identification. In this article, spindle power is monitored utilizing CNC machine internal sensor during helical milling of Aluminium and Titanium alloys in a aerospace stack for estimating cutting coefficients. Our previous research addressed the material detection in circular milling of Aluminium and Titanium alloys independently using a force dynamometer. The result shows the applicability of data map technique consisting of axial force coefficients for material identification in helical milling and highlights the significance of stack sequence.

Abstract

International audience; Haptic exoskeleton gloves are a widespread solution for providing force-feedback in Virtual Reality (VR), especially for 3D object manipulations. However, they are still lacking an important feature regarding in-hand haptic sensations: the palmar contact. In this paper, we present PalmEx, a novel approach which incorporates palmar force-feedback into exoskeleton gloves to improve the overall grasping sensations and manual haptic interactions in VR. PalmEx's concept is demonstrated through a self-contained hardware system augmenting a hand exoskeleton with an encountered palmar contact interface-physically encountering the users' palm. We build upon current taxonomies to elicit PalmEx's capabilities for both the exploration and manipulation of virtual objects. We first conduct a technical evaluation optimising the delay between the virtual interactions and their physical counterparts. We then empirically evaluate PalmEx's proposed design space in a user study (n=12) to assess the potential of a palmar contact for augmenting an exoskeleton. Results show that PalmEx offers the best rendering capabilities to perform believable grasps in VR. PalmEx highlights the importance of the palmar stimulation, and provides a low-cost solution to augment existing high-end consumer hand exoskeletons.

Abstract

International audience; Protactinium (Z = 91) is a very rare actinide with peculiar physico-chemical properties. Indeed, although one may naively think that it behaves similarly to either thorium or uranium by its position in the periodic table, it may in fact follow its own rules. Because of the quite small energy gap between its valence shells (in particular the 5f and 6d ones) and also the strong influence of relativistic effects on its properties, it is actually a challenging element for theoretical chemists. In this article, we combine experimental information, chemical arguments and standard first-principle calculations, complemented by implicit and explicit solvation, to revisit the stepwise complexation of aqueous protactinium(V) with sulfate and oxalate dianionic ligands (SO42- and C2O42-, respectively). From a methodological viewpoint, we notably conclude that it is necessary to at least saturate the coordination sphere of protactinium(V) to reach converged equilibrium constant values. Furthermore, in the case of single complexations (i.e. with one sulfate or oxalate ligand bound in the bidentate fashion), we show that it is necessary to maintain the coordination of one hydroxyl group, thought of in the [PaO(OH)]^3+ precursor, to obtain coherent complexation constants. Therefore, we predict that this hydroxyl group is maintained in the formation of 1:1 complexes while we confirm that it is withdrawn when coordinating three sulfate or oxalate ligands. Finally, we stress that this work is a first step toward the future use of theoretical predictions to elucidate the enigmatic chemistry of protactinium in solution.
