A novel inorganic complex formulated as [Co(dipic)(2,2´-bipyridine) (H2O)]3 × 10H2O, where dipic2− = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato has been synthesized via a facile sonochemical process. Molecular structure of inorganic complex was characterized by several methods. The results of single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that the complex crystallizes in space group Pī of a triclinic system. The sorbent of Co3O4/SiO2 was prepared by thermal treatment of the silica supported complex at 500 °C. For comparative purposes, the sorbent of Co3O4/SiO2 was prepared by solvothermal and impregnation methods. After characterization, the catalytic performance of the sorbents was comparatively studied for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from contaminated water source. The sorbent which prepared through thermal decomposition of inorganic complex showed improved ability in the removal of methylene blue due to the physicochemical properties, such as higher surface area, smaller particle size, and lower agglomeration.
