Roses are one of the most important cut flowers among ornamental plants. Rose flower longevity is largely dependent on the timing of petal shedding occurrence. To understand the molecular mechanism underlying petal abscission in rose, we performed transcriptome profiling of the petal abscission zone during petal shedding using Illumina technology. We identified a total of 2592 differentially transcribed genes (DTGs) during rose petal shedding. Gene ontology term enrichment and pathway analysis revealed that major biochemical pathways the DTGs were involved in included ethylene biosynthesis, starch degradation, superpathway of cytosolic glycolysis, pyruvate dehydrogenase and TCA cycle, photorespiration and the lactose degradation III pathway. This suggests that alterations in carbon metabolism are an important part of rose petal abscission. Among these DTGs, approximately 150 genes putatively encoding transcription factors were identified in rose abscission zone. These included zinc finger, WRKY, ERF, and Aux/IAA gene families, suggesting that petal abscission involves complex transcriptional reprogramming. Approximately 108 DTGs were related to hormone pathways, of which auxin and ethylene related DTGs were the largest groups including 52 and 41 genes, respectively. These also included 12 DTGs related to gibberellin and 6 DTGs in jasmonic acid pathway. Surprisingly, no DTGs involved in the biosynthesis/signaling of abscisic acid, cytokinin, brassinosteroid, and salicylic acid pathways were detected. Moreover, among DTGs related to auxin, we identified an Aux/IAA gene RhIAA16 that was up-regulated in response to petal shedding. Down-regulation of RhIAA16 by virus-induced gene silencing in rose promoted petal abscission, suggesting that RhIAA16 plays an important role in rose petal abscission. more...

To identify trends in the prevalence of gastroschisis on the basis of a large population-based observation study with cases identified by the Liaoning Birth Defects Registry including 14 cities over the course of a 10-year period. Data were obtained from the aforementioned registry which was maintained by the Liaoning Women and Children's Health Hospital, a comprehensive care institution as well as being responsible for the women's and children's health care guidance in this province. Gastroschisis prevalence, percent change, annual percent change (APC), and contribution rates of each city were calculated. We observed 747 cases of gastroschisis among 3,248,954 live births, for a prevalence of 2.30 per 10,000 births. The gastroschisis prevalence significantly decreased by 12.63% per year in Liaoning Province. Although the decreasing trends were observed in all these 14 cities, significant results were only observed in Shenyang (APC = -16.31%), Tieling (APC = -20.23%), and Chaoyang (APC = -13.50%). Notably, Tieling, Shenyang, and Yingkou were the three major cities which contributed almost 37.17% of the decreasing trend of gastroschisis in Liaoning Province. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that the prevalence of gastroschisis has been decreasing during the recent decade among 14 cities in Liaoning Province. more...

To evaluate time trends of exomphalos prevalence using a large population-based study with cases identified by the Liaoning Birth Defects Registry including 14 cities over the course of a 10-year period. Exomphalos prevalence, percent change, annual percent change (APC), and contribution rates of each city were calculated. Additionally, epidemiological characteristics of this malformation were described. We observed 516 cases of exomphalos among 3,248,954 live births. Birth prevalence of exomphalos was 1.59 per 10,000 live births with non-significant change during the observational period (APC = -1.19%, P = 0.48). However, significantly decreasing trends were noticed in three cities: Fushun (APC = -9.15%, P = 0.03), Benxi (APC = -11.49%, P = 0.05), and Yingkou (APC = -16.47%, P = 0.04), contributing 62.77% of the decreasing trend of overall prevalence. The mean maternal age, gestational age, and birth weight was 28.4 years (standard deviation [SD], 6.1 years), 25.6 weeks (SD, 8.6 weeks), and 1236.2 gram (SD, 1164.4 gram). For time of diagnosis, 79.8% (n = 412) cases were diagnosed during pregnancy. In summary, the prevalence of exomphalos in Liaoning province did not change remarkably during 2006 to 2015. Future studies are warranted to investigate the risk factors and create prevention strategies for this disease. more...

Virus-induced RNA silencing is involved in plant antiviral defense and requires key enzyme components, including RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RDRs), Dicer-like RNase III enzymes (DCLs), and Argonaute proteins (AGOs). However, the transcriptional regulation of these critical components is largely unknown. In petunia (Petunia hybrida), an ethylene-responsive element binding factor, PhERF2, is induced by Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) infection. Inclusion of a PhERF2 fragment in a TRV silencing construct containing reporter fragments of phytoene desaturase (PDS) or chalcone synthase (CHS) substantially impaired silencing efficiency of both the PDS and CHS reporters. Silencing was also impaired in PhERF2- RNAi lines, where TRV-PhPDS infection did not show the expected silencing phenotype (photobleaching). In contrast, photobleaching in response to infiltration with the TRV-PhPDS construct was enhanced in plants overexpressing PhERF2 Transcript abundance of the RNA silencing-related genes RDR2, RDR6, DCL2, and AGO2 was lower in PhERF2-silenced plants but higher in PhERF2-overexpressing plants. Moreover, PhERF2-silenced lines showed higher susceptibility to Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) than wild-type (WT) plants, while plants overexpressing PhERF2 exhibited increased resistance. Interestingly, growth and development of PhERF2-RNAi lines were substantially slower, whereas the overexpressing lines were more vigorous than the controls. Purpose: Vancomycin (VCM) is a first-line antibacterial drug used to treat post-craniotomy meningitis (PCM). VCM pharmacokinetic parameters are altered in PCM patients, compared to those in other patients. Although VCM population pharmacokinetics (PPK) has been reported, changes in VCM PPK in adult Chinese PCM patients remain unknown. We developed a VCM PPK model in adult Chinese PCM patients and proposed a new strategy for individualising VCM administration using this model., Methods: Data was obtained from a prospective study of 100 adult PCM patients in the Neurosurgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. The trough concentrations at steady state were determined by enzyme multiplied immunoassay. Nonlinear mixed-effect model software was employed to develop the PPK model. The final model was evaluated using the bootstrap method and normalised prediction error distribution and through the testing of 20 independent adult PCM patients., Results: VCM clearance in PCM patients was higher than that observed in other patients. Creatinine clearance affected VCM clearance, whereas no co-administered drugs influenced VCM pharmacokinetics. Trough concentrations were accurately predicted by the final model, while the prediction errors were less than ±32 %. Moreover, a new strategy for individualising VCM regimens using the PPK model was proposed and validated., Conclusions: A PPK model was developed to estimate the individual clearance in inpatients receiving intravenously infused VCM and could be used to develop individualised dosing of adult Chinese PCM patients. more...

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors (TFs) play important roles in regulating multiple biological processes in plants. However, there are few reports about the function of bHLHs in flower senescence. In this study, a bHLH TF, PhFBH4, was found to be dramatically upregulated during flower senescence. Transcription of PhFBH4 is induced by plant hormones and abiotic stress treatments. Silencing of PhFBH4 using virus-induced gene silencing or an antisense approach extended flower longevity, while transgenic petunia flowers with an overexpression construct showed a reduction in flower lifespan. Abundance of transcripts of senescence-related genes (SAG12, SAG29) was significantly changed in petunia PhFBH4 transgenic flowers. Furthermore, silencing or overexpression of PhFBH4 reduced or increased, respectively, transcript abundances of important ethylene biosynthesis-related genes, ACS1 and ACO1, thereby influencing ethylene production. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed that the PhFBH4 protein physically interacted with the G-box cis-element in the promoter of ACS1, suggesting that ACS1 was a direct target of the PhFBH4 protein. In addition, ectopic expression of this gene altered plant development including plant height, internode length, and size of leaves and flowers, accompanied by alteration of transcript abundance of the gibberellin biosynthesis-related gene GA2OX3. Background: The capacity of European pear fruit (Pyrus communis L.) to ripen after harvest develops during the final stages of growth on the tree. The objective of this study was to characterize changes in 'Bartlett' pear fruit physico-chemical properties and transcription profiles during fruit maturation leading to attainment of ripening capacity., Results: The softening response of pear fruit held for 14 days at 20 °C after harvest depended on their maturity. We identified four maturity stages: S1-failed to soften and S2- displayed partial softening (with or without ET-ethylene treatment); S3 - able to soften following ET; and S4 - able to soften without ET. Illumina sequencing and Trinity assembly generated 68,010 unigenes (mean length of 911 bp), of which 32.8 % were annotated to the RefSeq plant database. Higher numbers of differentially expressed transcripts were recorded in the S3-S4 and S1-S2 transitions (2805 and 2505 unigenes, respectively) than in the S2-S3 transition (2037 unigenes). High expression of genes putatively encoding pectin degradation enzymes in the S1-S2 transition suggests pectic oligomers may be involved as early signals triggering the transition to responsiveness to ethylene in pear fruit. Moreover, the co-expression of these genes with Exps (Expansins) suggests their collaboration in modifying cell wall polysaccharide networks that are required for fruit growth. K-means cluster analysis revealed that auxin signaling associated transcripts were enriched in cluster K6 that showed the highest gene expression at S3. AP2/EREBP (APETALA 2/ethylene response element binding protein) and bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) transcripts were enriched in all three transition S1-S2, S2-S3, and S3-S4. Several members of Aux/IAA (Auxin/indole-3-acetic acid), ARF (Auxin response factors), and WRKY appeared to play an important role in orchestrating the S2-S3 transition., Conclusions: We identified maturity stages associated with the development of ripening capacity in 'Bartlett' pear, and described the transcription profile of fruit at these stages. Our findings suggest that auxin is essential in regulating the transition of pear fruit from being ethylene-unresponsive (S2) to ethylene-responsive (S3), resulting in fruit softening. The woody resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia has remarkable tolerance to desiccation. Pyro-sequencing technology permitted us to analyze the transcriptome of M. flabellifolia during both dehydration and rehydration. We identified a total of 8287 and 8542 differentially transcribed genes during dehydration and rehydration treatments respectively. Approximately 295 transcription factors (TFs) and 484 protein kinases (PKs) were up- or down-regulated in response to desiccation stress. Among these, the transcript levels of 53 TFs and 91 PKs increased rapidly and peaked early during dehydration. These regulators transduce signal cascades of molecular pathways, including the up-regulation of ABA-dependent and independent drought stress pathways and the activation of protective mechanisms for coping with oxidative damage. Antioxidant systems are up-regulated, and the photosynthetic system is modified to reduce ROS generation. Secondary metabolism may participate in the desiccation tolerance of M. flabellifolia as indicated by increases in transcript abundance of genes involved in isopentenyl diphosphate biosynthesis. Up-regulation of genes encoding late embryogenesis abundant proteins and sucrose phosphate synthase is also associated with increased tolerance to desiccation. During rehydration, the transcriptome is also enriched in transcripts of genes encoding TFs and PKs, as well as genes involved in photosynthesis, and protein synthesis. The response of plants to drought stress includes reduced transpiration as stomates close in response to increased abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations. Constitutive overexpression of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED), a key enzyme in ABA biosynthesis, increases drought resistance, but causes negative pleiotropic effects on plant growth and development. We overexpressed the tomato NCED (LeNCED1) in petunia plants under the control of a stress-inducible promoter, rd29A. Under water stress, the transgenic plants had increased transcripts of NCED mRNA, elevated leaf ABA concentrations, increased concentrations of proline, and a significant increase in drought resistance. The transgenic plants also displayed the expected decreases in stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. After 14 days without water, the control plants were dead, but the transgenic plants, though wilted, recovered fully when re-watered. Well-watered transgenic plants grew like non-transformed control plants and there was no effect of the transgene on seed dormancy. more...

A gene encoding a KNOTTED1-LIKE HOMEOBOX PROTEIN1 (KD1) is highly expressed in both leaf and flower abscission zones. Reducing the abundance of transcripts of this gene in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) by both virus-induced gene silencing and stable transformation with a silencing construct driven by an abscission-specific promoter resulted in a striking retardation of pedicel and petiole abscission. In contrast, Petroselinum, a semidominant KD1 mutant, showed accelerated pedicel and petiole abscission. Complementary DNA microarray and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated that regulation of abscission by KD1 was associated with changed abundance of genes related to auxin transporters and signaling components. Measurement of auxin content and activity of a DR5::β-glucuronidase auxin reporter assay showed that changes in KD1 expression modulated the auxin concentration and response gradient in the abscission zone., (© 2015 American Society of Plant Biologists. The flesh colour and phenolic metabolism in potato tuber during curing and after cut were investigated. Result indicated that postharvest curing not only changed phenolic metabolism during curing, but also improved fresh-cut colour for 12 days after fresh cut. Significantly lower PAL and higher phenolic content and PPO activities during curing treatment and fresh-cut potatoes were detected compared to the control, which lead to the lower browning in the slices from curing treated potatoes. HPLC analysis revealed that amounts of total phenolics, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid and protocatechuic acid were induced by curing and highly accumulated in the curing treated potatoes. Since stem elongation is a gibberellic acid (GA) response, GA inhibitors are commonly used to control plant height in the production of potted ornamentals and bedding plants. In this study, we investigated interfering with GA signaling by using molecular techniques as an alternative approach. We isolated three putative GID1 genes (PhGID1A, PhGID1B and PhGID1C) encoding GA receptors from petunia. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of these genes results in stunted growth, dark-green leaves and late-flowering. We also isolated the gai mutant gene (gai-1) from Arabidopsis. We have generated transgenic petunia plants in which the gai mutant protein is over-expressed under the control of a dexamethasone-inducible promoter. This system permits induction of the dominant Arabidopsis gai mutant gene at a desired stage of plant development in petunia plants by the application of dexamethasone (Dex). The induction of gai in Dex-treated T1 petunia seedlings caused dramatic growth retardation with short internodes. more...

Sellar plasmacytoma is a rare cause of sellar lesions. Preoperative diagnosis remains a challenge. We present a 34-year-old Chinese woman with a 25-day history of headache and diplopia. A physical examination revealed incomplete left abducens nerve palsy. The initial diagnosis was invasive pituitary adenoma. The patient's condition deteriorated suddenly the day before the arranged operating date, with the hemoglobin level declining from 113 to 70 g/L. The operation was cancelled and further studies confirmed the diagnosis of sellar solitary plasmacytoma that progressed to multiple myeloma. After undergoing radiotherapy, high-dose chemotherapy, and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, complete remission was achieved on 4 years follow-up. We reviewed the pertinent literature and reached the following conclusions: sellar plasmacytomas with development of multiple myeloma on follow-up more likely happened in men than in women; and if the sellar plasmacytoma does not compress the cranial nerve, transsphenoidal resection should be cautious because the systemic treatment with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation may be more effective with little invasion. more...

Objective: To investigate the effects of external fixation combined with minimally invasive internal fixation for the treatment of distal radial fracture and dislocation of type IV based on Fernandez classification., Methods: From January 2007 to October 2012,19 patients with the distal radius fracture and dislocation of type IV according to Fernandez classification were reviewed. There were 14 males and 5 females,ranging in age from 22 to 42 years old,with an average of 36.5 years old. All the patients were treated with minimally invasive reduction, and external fixation with finite internal fixation. The K-wire was used to fix radiolunate articular surface for correcting the instability of dorsal and volar intercalated segment. The radiolunate angle, scapholunate angle, and the length of the radial shorting were measured by the standard X-ray. Gartland and Werley evaluation system was used to evaluate recovery of function., Results: No complications such as injury of blood vessels and radial nerves and pin track infections occurred. After operation, the radiolunate angle, scapholunate angle and the length of the radial shorting time were (9.5 +/- 3.3) degrees, (51.3 +/- 11.2) degrees and (11.2 +/- 1.8) mm by the standard X-ray. On the 3rd month after operation, GW score was 3.02 +/- 3.05. There was no re-displacement and subluxation occurred during the follow-up period. Good functional recovery were improved wrist function significantly., Conclusion: External fixation combined with minimally invasive internal fixation can treat distal radial fracture and dislocation of type IV based on Fernandez classification. Wrist joint stability depends on the structure of the bone and ligament around wrist joint. Emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of carpal instability, and postoperative functional rehabilitation can improve wrist function. more...

Flower senescence is initiated by developmental and environmental signals, and regulated by gene transcription. A homeodomain-leucine zipper transcription factor, PhHD-Zip, is up-regulated during petunia flower senescence. Virus-induced gene silencing of PhHD-Zip extended flower life by 20% both in unpollinated and pollinated flowers. Silencing PhHD-Zip also dramatically reduced ethylene production and the abundance of transcripts of genes involved in ethylene (ACS, ACO), and ABA (NCED) biosynthesis. Abundance of transcripts of senescence-related genes (SAG12, SAG29) was also dramatically reduced in the silenced flowers. Over-expression of PhHD-Zip accelerated petunia flower senescence. Furthermore, PhHD-Zip transcript abundance in petunia flowers was increased by application of hormones (ethylene, ABA) and abiotic stresses (dehydration, NaCl and cold). The authors proposed a new Raman peak recognition method named bi-scale correlation algorithm. The algorithm uses the combination of the correlation coefficient and the local signal-to-noise ratio under two scales to achieve Raman peak identification. We compared the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of the traditional continuous wavelet transform method through MATLAB, and then tested the algorithm with real Raman spectra. The results show that the average time for identifying a Raman spectrum is 0.51 s with the algorithm, while it is 0.71 s with the continuous wavelet transform. When the signal-to-noise ratio of Raman peak is greater than or equal to 6 (modern Raman spectrometers feature an excellent signal-to-noise ratio), the recognition accuracy with the algorithm is higher than 99%, while it is less than 84% with the continuous wavelet transform method. The mean and the standard deviations of the peak position identification error of the algorithm are both less than that of the continuous wavelet transform method. Simulation analysis and experimental verification prove that the new algorithm possesses the following advantages: no needs of human intervention, no needs of de-noising and background removal operation, higher recognition speed and higher recognition accuracy. Collimation system provides collimated light for the static Fourier-transform spectroscopy (SFTS). Its quality is crucial to the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of SFTS. In the present paper, the physical model of SFTS was established based on the Fresnel diffraction theory by means of numerical software. The influence of collimation system on the SFTS was discussed in detail focusing on the aberrations of collimation lens and the quality of extended source. The results of simulation show that the influences of different kinds of aberrations on SNR take on obvious regularity, and in particular, the influences of off-axis aberrations on SNR are closely related to the location of off-axis point source. Finally the extended source's maximum radius allowed was obtained by simulation, which equals to 0.65 mm. The discussion results will be used for the design of collimation system. more...

Flowers of ethylene-sensitive ornamental plants transformed with ethylene-insensitive 1-1(etr1-1), a mutant ethylene receptor first isolated from Arabidopsis, are known to have longer shelf lives. We have generated petunia plants in which the etr1-1 gene was over-expressed under the control of a chemically-inducible promoter, which would allow expression of etr1-1 to be initiated at the desired time and stage of development. Here, we showed that transgenic plants grew and developed normally without a chemical inducer. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR demonstrated that the abundance of transcripts of Arabidopsis etr1-1 gene was substantially induced in flowers with 30 μM dexamethasone (DEX). Consequently, t he life of the flowers was almost doubled and the peak of ethylene production was delayed. We compared gene expression changes of petals with DEX to those without DEX at 24 h and 48 h by microarray. Our results indicated that transcripts of many putative genes encoding transcription factors were down-regulated by etr1-1 induced expression at the early stage. In addition, putative genes involved in gibberellin biosynthesis, response to jasmonic acid/gibberellins stimulus, cell wall modification, ethylene biosynthesis, and cell death were down-regulated associating with etr1-1 induced expression. We investigated time-course gene expression profiles and found two profiles which displayed totally opposite expression patterns under these two treatments. In these profiles, 'the regulation of transcription' was predominant in GO categories. Taking all results together, we concluded those transcription factors down-regulated at early stage might exert a major role in regulating the senescence process which were consequently characterized by cell wall modification and cell death. more...

We report a new, novel and universal method to fabricate high-quality titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofilms on different substrates by a solid phase growth process of ion implantation and subsequent annealing in oxygen atmosphere. Ti ions were implanted into fused silica, soda lime glass, Z-cut quartz, or (0001) α-sapphire by a metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA) ion source implanter to fluences of 0.75, 1.5 and 3 × 10(17) ions cm(-2) with a nominal accelerating voltage of 20 kV. To understand the influence of the annealing temperature, time, and substrate on the formation and phase transformation of the TiO2 nanofilms, the Ti-ion-implanted substrates were annealed in oxygen atmosphere from 500 to 1000 °C for 1-6 h. The formation of TiO2 nanofilms resulted from the slow out-diffusion of implanted Ti ions from the substrates which were then oxidized at the surfaces. The thickness and phase of the nanofilms can be tailored by controlling the implantation and annealing parameters. Since the TiO2 nanofilms are formed under high temperature and low growth rate, they show good crystallinity and antibacterial properties, with good film adhesion and stability, suggesting that the TiO2 nanofilms formed by this method have great potential in applications such as antibacterial and self-cleaning transparent glass. more...

Ethylene and jasmonate (JA) have powerful effects when plants are challenged by pathogens. The inducible promoter-regulated expression of the Arabidopsis ethylene receptor mutant ethylene-insensitive1-1 (etr1-1) causes ethylene insensitivity in petunia. To investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in transgenic petunia responses to Botrytis cinerea related to the ethylene and JA pathways, etr1-1-expressing petunia plants were inoculated with Botrytis cinerea. The induced expression of etr1-1 by a chemical inducer dexamethasone resulted in retarded senescence and reduced disease symptoms on detached leaves and flowers or intact plants. The extent of decreased disease symptoms correlated positively with etr1-1 expression. The JA pathway, independent of the ethylene pathway, activated petunia ethylene response factor (PhERF) expression and consequent defence-related gene expression. A nanocomposite of polystyrene-coated magnetic nanoparticles was successfully synthesized and employed as adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of four Sudan dyes (I, II III, and IV) in red wines, juices, and mature vinegars. The prepared magnetic nanoparticles with highly hydrophobic properties have excellent adsorption capacity for these lipophilic Sudan dyes. Extraction conditions were optimized. Experimental results showed that the recoveries of the four Sudan dyes were very satisfactory when 70 mg of polystyrene-coated magnetic nanoparticles were used and the extraction could be completed within 20 min. It was proved that these magnetic nanoparticles can be reused after an easy washing process. By coupling the magnetic solid-phase extraction with ultrafast liquid chromatography-ultraviolet spectrometry, a rapid, green, effective, and sensitive method for the determination of Sudan dyes was developed. The LOD for Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III, and Sudan IV were 0.0039, 0.0063, 0.0057, and 0.017 ng/mL, respectively. Recoveries obtained by analyzing spiked water samples at three concentration levels (0.1, 1.0, and 10.0 ng/mL) were between 76.3 and 96.6%. Sensitized emission FRET detection method based on three-filter fluorescence microscopy is widely used and more suitable for live cell FRET imaging and dynamic protein-protein interaction analysis. But when it is applied to detect two proteins interaction in living cells, this intensity-based detection method is complicated by many experimental factors such as spectral crosstalk and spectral bleed-through and variable donor to acceptor concentration ratio. There are several FRET algorithms developed recently to correct those factors in order to quantitatively gauge and compare FRET signals between different experimental groups. But the algorithms are often difficult to choose when they are applied to certain experiments. In this research, we use c-Fos/c-Jun as a simple hetero-dimer interaction model to quantitatively detect and compare the FRET signals based on the following widely used sensitized emission FRET algorithms: N(FRET) , FRET(N) , FR, FRET(R) , E(app) and E(EFF) . Control of the plasmon-driven chemical reaction for the transformation of 4-nitrobenzenethiol to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene by Ag nanoparticle arrays was studied. The Ag nanoparticle arrays were fabricated by means of nanosphere lithography. By changing the PS particle size, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks of the Ag nanoparticle arrays can be tailored from 460 to 560 nm. The controlled reaction process was monitored by in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The reaction can be dramatically influenced by varying the duration of laser exposure, Ag nanoparticle size, laser power and laser excitation wavelength. The maximum reaction speed was achieved when the LSPR wavelength of the Ag nanoparticle arrays matched the laser excitation wavelength. The experimental results reveal that the strong LSPR can effectively drive the transfer of the 'hot' electrons that decay from the plasmon to the reactants. The current abscission model suggests the formation of a post-abscission trans-differentiation of a protective layer as the last step of the process. The present report expands the repertoire of genes activated in the tomato flower abscission zone (AZ), which are likely to be involved in defense responses. We identified four different defense-related genes, including: Cysteine-type endopeptidase, α-Dioxygenase 1 (α-DOX1), HopW-1-1-Interacting protein2 (WIN2), and Stomatal-derived factor-2 (SDF2), that are newly-associated with the late stage of the abscission process. The late expression of these genes, induced at 8-14 h after flower removal when pedicel abscission was already in progress, was AZ-specific, and was inhibited by treatments that prevented pedicel abscission, including 1-methylcyclopropene pretreatment or IAA application. This information supports the activation of different defense responses and strategies at the late abscission stages, which may enable efficient protection of the exposed tissue toward different environmental stresses. more...

Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) provides an attractive tool for high-throughput analysis of the functional effects of gene knockdown. Virus genomes are engineered to include fragments of target host genes, and the infected plant recognizes and silences the target genes as part of its viral defense mechanism. The consequences of gene inactivation, even of key metabolic, regulatory, or embryo-lethal genes, can thus be readily analyzed. A number of viral vectors have been developed for VIGS; one of the most frequently employed is based on tobacco rattle virus (TRV) due to its wide host range, efficiency, ease of application, and limited disease symptoms. TRV-based VIGS comprises two vectors. One (RNA2) includes a multiple cloning site into which fragments of target genes can be inserted. We have shown that the TRV/VIGS system can simultaneously silence as many as five independent genes. TRV is a mosaic-type virus, and silencing also occurs in a mosaic pattern. It is therefore desirable to have a reporter that can show where target genes have been silenced. The photobleaching induced by silencing phytoene desaturase (PDS) and the loss of purple pigmentation induced by silencing chalcone synthase (CHS) have successfully been used to indicate the location of coordinate silencing of other target genes. The abscission process is initiated by changes in the auxin gradient across the abscission zone (AZ) and is triggered by ethylene. Although changes in gene expression have been correlated with the ethylene-mediated execution of abscission, there is almost no information on the molecular and biochemical basis of the increased AZ sensitivity to ethylene. We examined transcriptome changes in the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Shiran 1335') flower AZ during the rapid acquisition of ethylene sensitivity following flower removal, which depletes the AZ from auxin, with or without preexposure to 1-methylcyclopropene or application of indole-3-acetic acid after flower removal. Microarray analysis using the Affymetrix Tomato GeneChip revealed changes in expression, occurring prior to and during pedicel abscission, of many genes with possible regulatory functions. They included a range of auxin- and ethylene-related transcription factors, other transcription factors and regulatory genes that are transiently induced early, 2 h after flower removal, and a set of novel AZ-specific genes. All gene expressions initiated by flower removal and leading to pedicel abscission were inhibited by indole-3-acetic acid application, while 1-methylcyclopropene pretreatment inhibited only the ethylene-induced expressions, including those induced by wound-associated ethylene signals. These results confirm our hypothesis that acquisition of ethylene sensitivity in the AZ is associated with altered expression of auxin-regulated genes resulting from auxin depletion. Our results shed light on the regulatory control of abscission at the molecular level and further expand our knowledge of auxin-ethylene cross talk during the initial controlling stages of the process. more...

Recently, there is much interest in nanocomposites consisting of metal nanoparticles dispersed in dielectric matrix. Silver is the first candidate used in antibacterial research. In the present study, sliver-containing silica glass is prepared by ion implantation. The bactericidal properties of Ag-implanted samples are investigated using E. coli. The implanted samples are characterized by optical absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The size and position of the silver nanoparticles formed by ion implantation can be optimized by adjusting the implanted process parameters. All the implanted samples show antibacterial properties. But the samples with silver nanoparticle-enriched surfaces possess excellent antibacterial properties in comparison with other implanted samples. This indicates that ion implantation is a potential method for synthesizing antibacterial biomaterials. more...

In order to facilitate optical polishing of silicon carbide space telescope, in the present paper, silicon film, which has similar coefficient of thermal expansion with silicon carbide, was fabricated on SiC substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The effect of substrate temperature, radio frequency power, and substrate bias voltage was investigated by Raman scattering. The results indicate that at lower substrate temperature, the crystalline volume fraction of Si films increases with the increase in deposition temperature. Exceeding a certain temperature, the crystalline volume fraction decreases with further increasing deposition temperature; the increase in substrate bias voltage is bad for forming crystalline structure; the effect of radio power on microstructure of silicon film is comparatively complicated. As the rf power increases, the cluster size and crystallite volume fraction decrease, and both of them increase with further increasing the rf power. But when the rf power is too high, the crystallite volume fraction of the silicon film will decrease slightly. more...

Objective: To determine the efficacy of phosphocreatine kinase in the early diagnosis of compartment syndrome., Methods: Forty patients with compartment syndrome of limbs were reviewed from 2005 to 2008 including 34 males and 6 females with an average age of (37.03 +/- 13.02) years. Monitoring phosphocreatine kinase continuously and dynamically after injured 2, 24 hours, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks later. The concentration of CK were measured by using Japanese Olympus automatic biochemistry analysator. The muscle preparations from affected extremity were taken after operation and 1, 2, 3 weeks later for biopsy., Results: Two hours later after injury, the contents of CK increased sharply and the contents of CK were about 20 times more than the nomal. Twenty-four hours later, the contents of CK reached its maximum,the contents of CK were about 42 times more than the nomal. One week later, the contents of CK recovered to normal level. Pathological changes of muscle were irreversible., Conclusion: The change of the contents of CK can reflect the progression of disease objectively. If it increased sharply, the chance of compartment syndrome was high. Monitored it dynamicly and continuously can provide assistant for early diagnosis of compartment syndrome and evaluating pathogenetic condition. more...

We investigated the synergistic effect of pidotimod and red ginseng acidic polysaccharide (RGAP) from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer on humoral immune response challenged by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in immunosuppressed mice. Combined treatment with pidotimod and RGAP significantly increased the number of plaque-forming cells in the spleen in response to both LPS and SRBC, while treatment with either pidotimod or RGAP individually had no such effect. IgG levels in serum were augmented for secondary responses to SRBC in co-treated mice, but not in mice treated with either drug alone. Microscopic studies revealed that architecture of the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes was conserved. GPT and creatinine in serum as indicators of hepatic and renal functions showed no difference compared to the control group. These results indicate that combined treatment with pidotimod and RGAP has an immunostimulatory effect in a synergistic manner on antibody response to challenge with LPS and SRBC without toxic changes. more...

We investigated the synergistic effect of combined treatment with red ginseng acidic polysaccharide (RGAP) from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and pidotimod in cyclophosphamide-treated mice. The combination of pidotimod and RGAP restored concanavalin A-induced splenic T cell proliferation and LPS-stimulated B cell proliferation significantly. The production of nitric oxide from peritoneal macrophages was increased by the combinations. NK cell activity was increased by RGAP alone or in combination with pidotimod. A synergistic increase in the level of serum IL-12 and interferongamm was observed when the combination of the two was used. RGAP alone or in combination with pidotimod modulated the level of serum C-reactive protein to a near-normal level. These results indicate that combinations of pidotimod and RGAP are synergistic and suggest that combination therapy using pidotimod and RGAP for improving immune activity may provide an additional benefit over the use of the two drugs by themselves. more...

Zinc oxide single-crystal films are prepared by the oxidation of zinc-implanted sapphire at 700 °C for 2 h in oxygen ambient. The cross-section transmission electron microscopy image and the selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern show that ZnO single-crystal films are formed on the surface of the zinc-implanted sapphire substrate. The quality and excitonic properties of the single-crystal ZnO films are studied through absorption spectra, the photoluminescence spectra and resonant Raman spectrum. The mechanisms for the formation of single-crystal ZnO films are discussed. more...

We report the formation of embedded ZnO quantum dots (QDs) by Zn and F ion sequential implantation and subsequent annealing. Optical absorption and photoluminescence spectrum measurements, transmission electron microscopy bright field images and selected area electron diffraction patterns indicate that ZnO QDs were formed after annealing in air or vacuum at temperatures higher than 500 °C. Atomic force microscopy images show a comparatively flat surface of the annealed samples, which indicates that only very few Zn atoms are evaporated to the surfaces. The formation of ZnO QDs during the thermal annealing can be attributed to the direct oxidization of Zn nanoparticles by the oxygen molecules in the substrate produced during the implantation of F ions. Objectives: To investigate the influence of wrist joint stability of patients with diversified fracture of the distal radius, and to find out the difference of the clinical effect between the patients with surgical treatment and non-surgical treatment., Methods: From January 1999 to September 2006 a total of 200 cases with the fracture of the distal radius were reviewed according to the AO classification, the radiolunate angle, scapholunate angle, palmar tilt angle and the length of the radial shorting and step-off of the articular surface were measured by the standard X-ray. Gartland and Werley as modified by Sarmiento evaluation system was used, and the results were statistically analyzed., Results: The average follow-up period was 5 years and 2 months. The follow-ups revealed 5 types of carpal instability: scapholunate dissociation, volar intercalated segment instability, dorsal intercalated segment instability and palmar or dorsal shift of the carpus. Functional results were excellent and good in 78% of the total patients. The increasing of the length of the radial shorting and step-off of the articular surface was found to be associated with greater risk of carpal instability., Conclusions: Based on the results of the study, wrist articular surface and radial shortening and palmar tilt angle should be considered as the most important factors of the healing effect after the fracture of the distal radius. Wrist joint stability depends on the structure of the bone and ligament around wrist joint. Carpal instability wound leads to significantly effect on the wrist. And surgery was necessary to severe intra-articular fracture of the distal radius. more...

Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) was used as a tool for functional analysis of cell wall-associated genes that have been suggested to be involved in leaf abscission. Tobacco rattle virus is an effective vector for VIGS in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Silencing was more efficient when the plants were grown at 22 degrees C than when they were grown at 20 degrees C or 25 degrees C. The photobleaching phenotype resulting from silencing phytoene desaturase varied, depending on cultivar, from barely visible to photobleaching of entire leaves. To study the function of abscission-related genes, a purple transgenic tomato line constitutively expressing the maize anthocyanin regulatory gene, Leaf colour (Lc) was used. Silencing Lc expression in this line resulted in reduced anthocyanin production (reversing the colour from purple to green), thus providing a convenient silencing 'reporter'. Silencing tomato abscission-related polygalacturonases (TAPGs), using a TAPG1 fragment, delayed abscission and increased break strength of the abscission zone in explants treated with 1 mul l(-1) ethylene. The abundance of TAPG1 transcripts in the green (silenced) abscission zone tissues was <1% of that in the purple (non-silenced) controls. As a highly homologous region was used for all five polygalacturonases it is assumed that the effect of delayed abscission is the result of silencing all the genes in this family. By contrast, silencing abscission-related expansins (LeEXP11 and LeEXP12) and endoglucanases (LeCEL1 and LeCEL2) had no discernible effect on break strength, even when the two endoglucanase genes were silenced concurrently. Simultaneous silencing of TAPG and LeCEL1 was no more effective than silencing TAPG alone. The data demonstrate the importance of TAPGs in the abscission of leaf petioles. more...

Objective: To evaluate the outcome and indication of surface-replacement total hip arthroplasty in the treatment of the femoral head osteonecrosis., Methods: The clinical data of 17 patients (21 hips) with femoral head osteonecrosis were reviewed. Among which, 10 cases were male and 7 cases were female, the average age was 36 years old (ranging from 25 to 51 years). There were 8 hips at Ficat stage III and 10 hips at Ficat stage IV. The 17 patients (21 hips) underwent surface-replacement total hip arthroplasty. Gibson posterolateral incision was used and non-cemented prosthesis was implanted. For prosthetic femoral head fixation, a guide pin was inserted into the capital center. After hollow boring hit drilling, a guide pole was inserted, and redundancy of femoral head was rasped off with cutterbar. The bone cement was painted on the femoral head and prosthesis, and the prosthesis was planted into the central axis hole of neck of femur until bone cement solidification. The therapeutic effects were evaluated by Harris hip score and statistical analysis was made. The X-ray was rechecked regularly., Results: The mean duration of follow-up was 32 months (18 to 42 months). The average Harris hip score was improved significantly from preoperative 35.30 +/- 5.23 to postoperative 90.47 +/- 3.14, and the excellent and good rate was 90.5%. There were high statistical differences between preoperative and postoperative Harris score (P < 0.01). The X-ray showed radiolucent line around acetabular prostheses in two patients but without prostheses loosening., Conclusion: Surface-replacement total hip arthroplasty is a satisfactory way for the treatment of femoral head osteonecrosis in the middle-late phase, which can help reconstructing normal joint biomechanics and load transmission,improving joint stability and postponing THA without affecting later rebuilding, as well as some advantages such as decreasing surgical wound, convenient and low infection rate. Its indication is Ficat stage III and part Ficat stage IV femur head necrosis with less destroyed neck of femur,especially for young patients having a large amount of activity. more...

Objective: To discuss the approach and curative effect of total knee arthroplasty by intraoperative digital 3D bone mode., Methods: 28 patients with bone arthritis, 7 with rheumatoid arthritis, 7 with ankylosing spondylitis, totally 46 patients with 54 knees affected, 29 males and 17 females, aged 48 (31 - 76), underwent total knee arthroplasty by digital 3D bone mode, including osteotomy, adjustment of soft tissue, and rotational positioning of prostheses. The operative time, hemorrhage and drainage 48 h after operation, and complication were observed. The pre-postoperative knee function was evaluated by HISS scoring system. The pre-postoperative range of motion of knee joint, and angle of KNA, variance of angle in exterior and interior stress and separation of joint space in tensile force, and postoperative rotational angle of tibia-femur prostheses were measured. X-ray tangential projection photography of patella was used to evaluate the apposition of patellofemoral joint. The postoperative curative effect was observed for 3 months., Results: No complication as injury of nerves and blood vessel, bone fracture, fat embolism and so on was observed. The operative time was 80 +/- 15 min per knee. The hemorrhage and drainage in 48 h was 550 +/- 60 ml per knee. The Hand Injury Severity Score (HISS) 2 weeks after the operation was (92 +/- 4), significantly higher than that before operation [(46 +/- 6), P < 0.01]. There were statistically significant differences in the KNA angle, variance of angle under exterior stress, interior stress, and separation of joint space in tensile force pre- and postoperatively (all P < 0.01). The postoperative rotational angle of tibia-femur prostheses was (4.2 +/- 0.4) degrees. The X-ray tangential projection photograph of patella showed excellent apposition of patellofemoral joint, and no dislocation and unsteadiness. The postoperative range of motion of knee joint was 120 degrees +/- 9 degrees 3 months after operation. No joint laxity was found., Conclusion: Computer assisted imaging guidance actually and dynamically observe the changes of line of force of the lower limbs, knee joint rotational apposition and ligament balance, provides geometrical and morphological data and rebuild the knee joint bio-mechanically and anatomically, thus elevating the reproducibility of total knee arthroplasty and ensuring the safety of the system. more...

Objective: To analyze the content of guanosine, total alkaloid and individual yield of Pinellia ternata from different populations in China and evaluate its quality., Method: Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine the content of guanosine. The content of alkaloid was determined by ultra violet spectrophometry. The results were analyzed by SPSS software., Result: The contents of guanosine and total alkaloid in P. ternata were 0.0136% -0.0264% and 0.0155% -0.0652% respectively. Individual yield was 0.5536-2.9740 g. All of the populations could be classified into 3 types through hierarchical cluster analysis., Conclusion: There exist significant differences in the content of guanosine, total content of alkaloid and individual yield of P. ternata from different populations. Background: The C242T polymorphisms of P22(phox) and plasma vitamin E have been associated with the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in several studies, but the results have been inconsistent. In this study, we sought to examine potential interactions between P22(phox) genotypes, plasma vitamin E concentrations, and smoking in relation to CHD risk., Methods: We determined C242T genotype frequency in the P22(phox) gene and plasma levels of vitamin E in 565 Chinese patients with CHD and 609 control subjects. Logistic regression was used to control for potential confounders in multivariate analyses., Results: Compared with subjects with a CC genotype, subjects with a CT or TT genotype had a lower risk of CHD (multivariate-adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.45, 95% CI 0.28-0.74, P = .001). Plasma concentrations of vitamin E were lower in case patients than in control subjects (multivariate-adjusted OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.50-0.86, P = .025). Compared with nonsmokers with a CC genotype, nonsmokers with a CT or TT genotype had a decreased risk of CHD (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.12-0.53), but smokers with a CT or TT genotype had an increased risk (OR 2.04, 95% CI 0.74-5.61, P for interaction = .039). Smokers with a lower vitamin E concentration had a >3.0-fold greater risk of CHD than did nonsmokers with a higher vitamin E concentration (OR 3.52, 95% CI 2.36-5.24, P for interaction = .041)., Conclusions: These data provide evidence that P22(phox) genotypes are significantly associated with CHD risk in a Chinese population and suggest potential interactions among smoking, P22(phox) genotypes, and vitamin E in relation to CHD risk. more...

A modest ethylene climacteric accompanies flower senescence in Mirabilis jalapa L., and exogenous ethylene accelerates the process. However, inhibitors of ethylene action and synthesis have little effect on the life-span of these ephemeral flowers. Treatment with alpha-amanitin, an inhibitor of DNA-dependent RNA synthesis, substantially delays the onset of senescence. This effect falls linearly between 7 h and 8 h after the start of flower opening. Subtractive hybridization was used to isolate transcripts that were up- and down-regulated during this critical period. Eighty-two up-regulated and 65 down-regulated transcripts were isolated. The genes identified encode homologues of a range of transcription factors, and of proteins involved in protein turnover and degradation. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR was used to examine expression patterns of these genes during flower opening and senescence. Genes that were identified as being down-regulated during senescence showed a common pattern of very high expression during floral opening. These genes included a homologue of CCA1, a 'clock' gene identified in Arabidopsis thaliana and an aspartyl protease. Up-regulated genes commonly showed a pattern of increase during the critical period (4-9 h after opening), and some showed very strong up-regulation. A gene encoding a RING zinc finger ankyrin repeat protein (MjXB3), a putative E3 ubiquitin ligase, is highly expressed in petals of senescing four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa) flowers, increasing >40,000-fold during the onset of visible senescence. The gene has homologues in many other species, and the Petunia homologue is strongly up-regulated in senescing Petunia corollas. Silencing the expression of this gene in Petunia, using virus-induced gene silencing, resulted in a 2 d extension in flower life. In Mirabilis, a 2 kb promoter region, 5' upstream of the MjXB3 gene, was isolated. The promoter sequence included putative binding sites for many DNA-binding proteins, including the bZIP, Myb, homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip), MADS-box, and WRKY transcription factors. The construct containing a 1 kb promoter region immediately upstream of the MjXB3 gene drove the strongest expression of the beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene in a transient expression assay. In Petunia, GUS expression under the control of this heterologous promoter fragment was specific to senescing flowers. The Mirabilis promoter GUS construct was tested in other flower species; while GUS activity in carnation petals was high during senescence, no expression was detected in three monocotyledonous flowers--daylily (Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro'), daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus 'King Alfred'), and orchid (Dendrobium 'Emma White'). more...

In order to investigate thoroughly the optical properties of amorphous diamond (alpha-D) films deposited by the filtered vacuum arc technology, the optical constants of the films were measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Moreover, the dispersion relations of the optical constants, and the correlations among refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical gap and the substrate bias were also analyzed. It has been shown that the refractive index of alpha-D films is higher than that of diamond crystal, and the absorption edge corresponding to the interband transformation can be described with the parabolic line shape. With increasing the wavelength, the extinction coefficient gradually declines and approaches nearly to zero in the infrared band. In addition, the adjustable amplitudes of the optical constants owing to the changing bias also reduce strikingly with the extension of the wavelength. With raising the bias, the refractive index and the optical gap firstly augment, then minish, and there is a maximal value when the substrate bias is -80 V. According to the result of audiometry, they were divided into two groups: the NIHL group and the normal group. The GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes of 93 workers with NIHL and 101 normal workers were tested by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Results The study showed that there were no significant differences in the distribution of GSTM1 and GST1 existed/null genotypes frequencies between NIHL group and normal group (P > 0.05). After adjusted for age, sex, smoking, history of explosive noise exposure and cumulative noise exposure (CNE) with multiple logistic regression analysis, the risk of GSTT1 null group was found significantly higher than that of the GSTT1 non-null group (P < 0.05), the adjusted OR value of which was 1.952 (95% confidence interval 1.017 - 3.746). There was no significant difference between the GSTM1 null group and the GSTM1 non-null group in the risk of NIHL (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The results suggested that genetic polymorphism in GSTTI1 gene might play an important role in the development of NIHL in Chinese workers; the individuals with the GSTT1 null genotype might be more susceptible to NIHL. more...

Nectaries are secretory organs that are widely present in flowering plants that function to attract floral pollinators. Owing to diversity in nectary positions and structures, they are thought to have originated multiple times during angiosperm evolution, with their potential contribution to the diversification of flowering plants and pollinating animals being considerable. We investigated the genetic basis of diverse nectary forms in eudicot angiosperm species using CRABS CLAW (CRC), a gene required for nectaries in Arabidopsis. CRC expression is conserved in morphologically different nectaries from several core eudicot species and is required for nectary development in both rosids and asterids, two major phylogenetic lineages of eudicots. However, in a basal eudicot species, no evidence of CRC expression in nectaries was found. Considering the phylogenetic distribution of nectary positions and CRC expression analyses in eudicots, we propose that diverse nectaries in core eudicots share conserved CRC gene regulation, and that derived nectary positions in eudicots have altered regulation of CRC. As the ancestral function of CRC lies in the regulation of carpel development, it may have been co-opted as a regulator of nectary development within the eudicots, concomitant with the association of nectaries with reproductive organs in derived lineages. more...

Prohibitins, highly conserved mitochondrial proteins, have been shown to play important roles in cell cycling and senescence in animals and yeast. Sequences with high similarity to prohibitins have been identified in a number of plant species, but their function has not yet been demonstrated. The deduced amino acid sequences of PhPHB1 and PhPHB2, sequences that we identified in a petunia floral expressed sequence tag (EST) database, show high similarity to those of prohibitin-1 and prohibitin-2 proteins, respectively, reported from yeast, animals and plants. Southern analysis suggested that these genes were members of small gene families with at least two prohibitin-1 homologs and four prohibitin-2 homologs. When we downregulated expression of prohibitin-1 using a Tobacco rattle virus-based (TRV), virus-induced gene silencing system (VIGS), we observed plants with smaller and distorted leaves and flowers. Cells in silenced flowers were larger than in control flowers, indicating a substantial reduction in the number of cell divisions that took place during corolla development. The life of silenced flowers was shorter than that of controls, whether on the plant or detached. The respiration of silenced flowers was higher than that of controls, and we observed a marked increase in the abundance of transcripts of a catalase and a small heat-shock protein in the silenced flowers. Objective: To explore the relationship between genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GST) M1, T1 and susceptibility to mountain sickness., Methods: Forty-three soldiers with acute mountain sickness and 80 healthy soldiers matching with sex/age and training under the same condition were divided into case group and control group. A multiple polymerase chain reaction method was used to detect GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes in genomic DNA isolated from peripheral blood cells from both cases and controls., Results: The frequency of the GSTT1 positive genotype was significantly higher in cases (69.8%) than in controls (42.5%) (P = 0.004, OR = 3.12, 95% CI 1.42 approximately 6.86). The frequency of GSTM1 negative genotype was also higher in cases (72.1%) than in controls (52.5%) (P = 0.03, OR = 2.34, 95% CI 1.05 approximately 5.02). Persons with both GSTM1 and GSTT1 negative genotypes had 5-fold more risk than those with GSTT1 negative and GSTM1 positive genotypes in developing mountain sickness (OR = 5.04, 95% CI: 1.00 approximately 25.3)., Conclusion: Genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase M1, T1 may be the risk factors in the development of mountain sickness. more...
