101. The Molecule-Rich Tail of the Peculiar Galaxy NGC 2782 (Arp 215)

Abstract

We present the first detection of a large quantity of molecular gas in the extended tail of an interacting galaxy. Using the NRAO 12m telescope, we have detected CO (1 - 0) at five locations in the eastern tail of the peculiar starburst galaxy NGC 2782. The CO velocities and narrow (FWHM = 50 km/s) line widths in these positions agree with those seen in HI, confirming that the molecular gas is indeed associated with the tail rather than the main disk. As noted previously, the gas in this tail has an apparent `counter-rotation' compared to gas in the core of the galaxy, probably because the tails do not lie in the same plane as the disk. Assuming the standard Galactic conversion N(H2)/I(CO) factor, these observations indicate a total molecular gas mass of 6 X 10**8 M(sun) in this tail. This may be an underestimate of the total H2 mass if the gas is metal-poor. This molecular gas mass, and the implied H2/HI mass ratio of 0.6, are higher than that found in many dwarf irregular galaxies. Comparison with an available H-alpha map of this galaxy, however, shows that the rate of star formation in this feature is extremely low relative to the available molecular gas, compared to L(H-alpha)/M(H2) values for both spiral and irregular galaxies. 102. The remarkable starburst-driven outflow in NGC 2782

Abstract

We show that the starburst-driven outflow in the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 forms a well-defined collimated bubble which has an extent of $\sim$ 1 kpc and a closed shell at its edge, as seen in H$\alpha$, [O III], and 5 GHz radio continuum. The shell coincides with the maximum in intensity and linewidths of [O III] lines in a blueshifted emission nebula which was previously detected via optical spectroscopy by Boer et al. (1992). Such a remarkable outflow morphology has not been observed to date in any other starburst galaxy of comparable luminosity. The radio continuum map reveals a second bubble of similar size on the opposite side of the nucleus, forming a striking double-bubble outflow morphology. We argue from the morphology and short timescale ($\sim$ $4 \times 10^6$ years) of the outflow that it is dynamically younger than freely-expanding outflows seen in other galaxies which harbor circumnuclear starbursts of comparable luminosity, e.g., M82. We suggest that the outflow in NGC 2782 is in the early stage where thermal instabilities have not yet completely ruptured the outflow bubble.We present evidence that the outflow is driving warm and hot ionised gas, and possibly cold molecular gas, out of the central kpc of the galaxy. We estimate the contribution of the hot, warm, and cold phases of the ISM to the energetics of the outflow. Abstract

We report on the host properties of five X-ray-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified at 3 < z < 5 in the first epoch of imaging from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey. Each galaxy has been imaged with the JWST Near-Infrared Camera, which provides rest-frame optical morphologies at these redshifts. We also derive stellar masses and star formation rates for each host by fitting its spectral energy distribution using a combination of galaxy and AGN templates. We find that three of the AGN hosts have spheroidal morphologies, one is a bulge-dominated disk, and one is dominated by pointlike emission. None are found to show strong morphological disturbances that might indicate a recent interaction or merger event. When compared to a sample of mass-matched inactive galaxies, we find that the AGN hosts have morphologies that are less disturbed and more bulge-dominated. Notably, all four of the resolved hosts have rest-frame optical colors consistent with a quenched or poststarburst stellar population. The presence of AGN in passively evolving galaxies at z > 3 is significant because a rapid feedback mechanism is required in most semianalytic models and cosmological simulations to explain the growing population of massive quiescent galaxies observed at these redshifts. Our findings show that AGN can continue to inject energy into these systems after their star formation is curtailed, potentially heating their halos and preventing renewed star formation. Additional observations will be needed to determine what role this feedback may play in helping to quench these systems and/or maintain their quiescent state.

Abstract

We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five z > 5 galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain absolute spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to z similar to 3 galaxies in the literature, the z > 5 galaxies have similar [O iii]lambda 5008/H beta ratios, similar [O iii]lambda 4364/H gamma ratios, and higher (similar to 0.5 dex) [Ne III]lambda 3870/[O II]lambda 3728 ratios. We compare the observations to MAPPINGS V photoionization models and find that the measured [Ne III]lambda 3870/[O II]lambda 3728, [O iii]lambda 4364/H gamma, and [O iii]lambda 5008/H beta emission-line ratios are consistent with an interstellar medium (ISM) that has very high ionization ( log(Q)?8-9 , units of cm s(-1)), low metallicity (Z/Z (?) ? 0.2), and very high pressure ( log(P/k)?8-9, units of cm(-3)). The combination of [O iii]lambda 4364/H gamma and [O iii]lambda(4960 + 5008)/H beta line ratios indicate very high electron temperatures of 4.1 < log(T-e/K) < 4.4, further implying metallicities of Z/Z(?)?0.2 with the application of low-redshift calibrations for "T-e -based " metallicities. These observations represent a tantalizing new view of the physical conditions of the ISM in galaxies at cosmic dawn.

Abstract

We report the discovery of a candidate galaxy with a photo-z of z ∼ 12 in the first epoch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey. Following conservative selection criteria, we identify a source with a robust z phot = 11.8−0.2+0.3 (1σ uncertainty) with m F200W = 27.3 and ≳7σ detections in five filters. The source is not detected at λ < 1.4 μm in deep imaging from both Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and JWST and has faint ∼3σ detections in JWST F150W and HST F160W, which signal a Lyα break near the red edge of both filters, implying z ∼ 12. This object (Maisie’s Galaxy) exhibits F115W − F200W > 1.9 mag (2σ lower limit) with a blue continuum slope, resulting in 99.6% of the photo-z probability distribution function favoring z > 11. All data-quality images show no artifacts at the candidate’s position, and independent analyses consistently find a strong preference for z > 11. Its colors are inconsistent with Galactic stars, and it is resolved (r h = 340 ± 14 pc). Maisie’s Galaxy has log M */M ⊙ ∼ 8.5 and is highly star-forming (log sSFR ∼ −8.2 yr−1), with a blue rest-UV color (β ∼ −2.5) indicating little dust, though not extremely low metallicity. While the presence of this source is in tension with most predictions, it agrees with empirical extrapolations assuming UV luminosity functions that smoothly decline with increasing redshift. Should follow-up spectroscopy validate this redshift, our universe was already aglow with galaxies less than 400 Myr after the Big Bang.

Abstract

In theoretical models of galaxy evolution, active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation (SF) activity are closely linked and AGN feedback is routinely invoked to regulate galaxy growth. In order to constrain such models, we compare the hydrodynamical simulations IllustrisTNG and SIMBA, and the semi-analytical model SAG to the empirical results on AGN and SF at cosmic noon (0.75 < z < 2.25) reported in Florez et al. (2020). The empirical results are based on a large mass-complete sample drawn from 93 307 galaxies with and without high X-ray luminosity AGN (LX ≳ 1044 erg s−1), selected from a 11.8 deg2 area (∼0.18 Gpc3 comoving volume at z = 0.75–2.25). The main results of our comparisons are: (i) SAG and IllustrisTNG both qualitatively reproduce the empirical result that galaxies with high X-ray luminosity AGN have higher mean SFR, at a given stellar mass, than galaxies without such AGN. SAG, however, strongly overproduces the number density of high X-ray luminosity AGN by a factor of 10–100, while IllustrisTNG shows a lack of high X-ray luminosity AGN at high stellar mass ($M* \gt 10^{11} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$) at z ∼ 2. (ii) In SIMBA, the mean SFR of galaxies with high X-ray luminosity AGN is lower than the SFR of galaxies without such AGN. Contrary to the data, many high X-ray luminosity AGN in SIMBA have quenched SF, suggesting that AGN feedback, or other feedback modes in galaxies with such AGN, might be too efficient in SIMBA.

Abstract

We present the high-mass end of the galaxy stellar mass function using the largest sample to date (5352) of star-forming galaxies with M ⋆ > 1011 M⊙ at cosmic noon, 1.5 < z  < 3.5. This sample is uniformly selected across 17.2 deg2 (∼0.44 Gpc3 comoving volume from 1.5 < z  < 3.5), mitigating the effects of cosmic variance and encompassing a wide range of environments. This area, a factor of 10 larger than previous studies, provides robust statistics at the high-mass end. Using multiwavelength data in the Spitzer /HETDEX Exploratory Large Area (SHELA) footprint, we find that the SHELA footprint star-forming galaxy stellar mass function is steeply declining at the high-mass end probing values as high as ∼10−4 Mpc3 dex−1 and as low as ∼5 × 10−8 Mpc3 dex−1 across a stellar mass range of log(M ⋆/ M ⊙) ∼ 11–12. We compare our empirical star-forming galaxy stellar mass function at the high-mass end to three types of numerical models: hydrodynamical models from IllustrisTNG, abundance matching from the UniverseMachine, and three different semi-analytical models (SAMs; SAG, SAGE, GALACTICUS). At redshifts 1.5 < z  < 3.5, we find that results from IllustrisTNG and abundance matching models agree within a factor of ∼2–10, however the three SAMs strongly underestimate (up to a factor of 1000) the number density of massive galaxies. Abstract

We present an overview of the Space Telescope A901/2 Galaxy Evolution Survey (STAGES). STAGES is a multiwavelength project designed to probe physical drivers of galaxy evolution across a wide range of environments and luminosity. A complex multicluster system at z∼ 0.165 has been the subject of an 80-orbit F606W Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) mosaic covering the full span of the supercluster. Extensive multiwavelength observations with XMM-Newton, GALEX, Spitzer, 2dF, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the 17-band COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey complement the HST imaging. Our survey goals include simultaneously linking galaxy morphology with other observables such as age, star formation rate, nuclear activity and stellar mass. In addition, with the multiwavelength data set and new high-resolution mass maps from gravitational lensing, we are able to disentangle the large-scale structure of the system. By examining all aspects of an environment we will be able to evaluate the relative importance of the dark matter haloes, the local galaxy density and the hot X-ray gas in driving galaxy transformation. This paper describes the HST imaging, data reduction and creation of a master catalogue. We perform the Sérsic fitting on the HST images and conduct associated simulations to quantify completeness. In addition, we present the COMBO-17 photometric redshift catalogue and estimates of stellar masses and star formation rates for this field. We define galaxy and cluster sample selection criteria, which will be the basis for forthcoming science analyses, and present a compilation of notable objects in the field. Abstract

We present a new automatic method to identify galaxy mergers using the morphological information contained in the residual images of galaxies after the subtraction of a smooth Sérsic model. The removal of the bulk signal from the host galaxy light is done with the aim of detecting the much fainter and elusive minor mergers. The specific morphological parameters that are used in the merger diagnostic suggested here are the residual flux fraction (RFF) and the asymmetry of the residuals [A(Res)]. The new diagnostic has been calibrated and optimized so that the resulting merger sample is very complete. However, the contamination by non-mergers is also high. If the same optimization method is adopted for combinations of other structural parameters such as the Concentration, Asymmetry, clumpineSs (CAS) system, the merger indicator we introduce yields merger samples of equal or higher statistical quality than the samples obtained through the use of other structural parameters. We investigate the ability of the method presented here to select minor mergers by identifying a sample of visually classified mergers that would not have been picked up by the use of the CAS system, when using its usual limits. However, given the low prevalence of mergers among the general population of galaxies and the optimization used here, we find that the merger diagnostic introduced in this work is best used as a negative merger test, that is, it is very effective at selecting non-merging galaxies. In common with all the currently available automatic methods, the sample of merger candidates selected is heavily contaminated by non-mergers, and further steps are needed to produce a clean merger sample. This merger diagnostic has been developed using the Hubble Space Telescope/ACS F606W images of the A901/902 multiple cluster system (z= 0.165) obtained by the Space Telescope A901/902 Galaxy Evolution Survey team. Abstract

We present weak lensing data from the HST/STAGES survey to study the three-dimensional spatial distribution of matter and galaxies in the Abell 901/902 supercluster complex. Our method improves over the existing 3D lensing mapping techniques by calibrating and removing redshift bias and accounting for the effects of the radial elongation of 3D structures. We also include the first detailed noise analysis of a 3D lensing map, showing that even with deep HST quality data, only the most massive structures, for example M200>~10^15 Msun/h at z~0.8, can be resolved in 3D with any reasonable redshift accuracy (\Delta z~0.15). We compare the lensing map to the stellar mass distribution and find luminous counterparts for all mass peaks detected with a peak significance >3\sigma. We see structures in and behind the z=0.165 foreground supercluster, finding structure directly behind the A901b cluster at z~0.6 and also behind the SW group at z~0.7. Abstract

We study the links between star formation history and structure for a large mass-selected galaxy sample at 0.05 ≤ zphot ≤ 0.30. The galaxies inhabit a very broad range of environments, from cluster cores to the field. Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images, we quantify their structure following Hoyos et al., and divide them into disturbed and undisturbed. We also visually identify mergers. Additionally, we provide a quantitative measure of the degree of disturbance for each galaxy (‘roughness’). The majority of elliptical and lenticular galaxies have relaxed structure, showing no signs of ongoing star formation. Structurally disturbed galaxies, which tend to avoid the lowest density regions, have higher star formation activity and younger stellar populations than undisturbed systems. Cluster spirals with reduced/quenched star formation have somewhat less disturbed morphologies than spirals with ‘normal’ star formation activity, suggesting that these ‘passive’ spirals have started their morphological transformation into S0s. Visually identified mergers and galaxies not identified as mergers but with similar roughness have similar specific star formation rates and stellar ages. The degree of enhanced star formation is thus linked to the degree of structural disturbance, regardless of whether it is caused by major mergers or not. This suggests that merging galaxies are not special in terms of their higher-than-normal star formation activity. Any physical process that produces ‘roughness’, or regions of enhanced luminosity density, will increase the star formation activity in a galaxy with similar efficiency. An alternative explanation is that star formation episodes increase the galaxies’ roughness similarly, regardless of whether they are merger induced or not.

Abstract

We present a study of the excitation conditions and metallicity of ionized gas (Z_gas) in eight nearby barred and unbarred spiral galaxies from the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies (VENGA) survey, which provides high spatial sampling and resolution (median ~ 387 pc), large coverage from the bulge to outer disc, broad wavelength range (3600-6800 Ang.), and medium spectral resolution (~ 120 km s^-1 at 5000 Ang.). Our results are: (1) We present high resolution gas excitation maps to differentiate between regions with excitation typical of Seyfert, LINER, or recent star formation. We find LINER-type excitation at large distances (3-10 kpc) from the centre, and associate this excitation with diffuse ionized gas (DIG). (2) After excluding spaxels dominated by Seyfert, LINER, or DIG, we produce maps with the best spatial resolution and sampling to date of the ionization parameter q, star formation rate, and Z_gas using common strong line diagnostics. We find that isolated barred and unbarred spirals exhibit similarly shallow Z_gas profiles from the inner kpc out to large radii (7-10 kpc or 0.5-1.0 R_25). This implies that if profiles had steeper gradients at earlier epochs, then the present-day bar is not the primary driver flattening gradients over time. This result contradicts earlier claims, but agrees with recent IFU studies. (3) The Z_gas gradients in our z ~ 0 massive spirals are markedly shallower, by ~ 0.2 dex kpc^-1, than published gradients for lensed lower mass galaxies at z ~ 1.5-2.0. Abstract

NGC 1042 is a late type bulgeless disk galaxy which hosts a low luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) coincident with a massive nuclear star cluster. In this paper, we present the integral-field-spectroscopy (IFS) studies of this galaxy, based on the data obtained with the Mitchell spectrograph on the 2.7 meter Harlan J. Smith telescope. In the central $100\textrm{-}300\ \mathrm{pc}$ region of NGC 1042, we find a circumnuclear ring structure of gas with enhanced ionization, which we suggest is mainly induced by shocks. Combining with the harmonic decomposition analysis of the velocity field of the ionized gas, we propose that the shocked gas is the result of gas inflow driven by the inner spiral arms. The inflow velocity is $\sim 32\pm10\ \mathrm{km}\ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and the estimated mass inflow rate is $\sim 1.1\pm0.3 \times 10^{-3}\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. The mass inflow rate is about one hundred times the blackhole's mass accretion rate ($\sim 1.4 \times 10^{-5}\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}\ \mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$), and slightly larger than the star formation rate in the nuclear star cluster ($7.94 \times 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{M}_{\odot}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$), implying that the inflow material is enough to feed both the AGN activity and the star formation in the nuclear star cluster. Abstract

We evaluate the dry merger activity in the Coma cluster, using a spectroscopically complete sample of 70 red-sequence (RS) galaxies, most of which (~75%) are located within 0.2R200 (~0.5 Mpc) from the cluster center, with data from the Coma Treasury Survey obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The fraction of close galaxy pairs in the sample is the proxy employed for the estimation of the merger activity. We identify 5 pairs and 1 triplet, enclosing a total of 13 galaxies, based on limits on projected separation and line-of-sight velocity difference. Of these systems, none show signs of ongoing interaction, and therefore we do not find any true mergers in our sample. This negative result sets a 1{\sigma} upper limit of 1.5% per Gyr for the major dry merger rate, consistent with the low rates expected in present-day clusters. Detailed examination of the images of all the RS galaxies in the sample reveals only one with low surface brightness features identifiable as the remnant of a past merger or interaction, implying a post-merger fraction below 2%., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table
