106. Dissemination with Impact: What Research Suggests for Practice in Career and Technical Education.

- Abstract
Dissemination in career and technical education does not simply disperse information, new products, new practices and materials, and new ideas designed to stimulate local change but does so in ways that promote its use. Federal efforts to promote dissemination of research-based information in education are: (1) deeply indebted to the agricultural extension model; (2) traditionally focused on the dissemination, rather than knowledge use side of the equation; (3) often a set of uncoordinated activities; and (4) a largely top-down, research-to-practice focused, rather than bottom-up, problem solving focused approach. Disseminators may be best thought of as linking agents positioned to move research into practice. Elements of a knowledge use model of dissemination are the following: (1) capitalize on incentives for change; (2) provide knowledge useable for practitioners; (3) create shared understandings of how new ideas could help improve local practice; (4) stimulate increased diffusion of new ideas within and between educational agencies; and (5) combine top-down and bottom-up approaches. As for the knowledge user/educator's perspective on dissemination, a constructivist perspective suggests all knowledge is local, contested, partial, and political. Unresolved quandaries in dissemination and knowledge use are how useable educational knowledge is; how it influences policy; and how contexts for dissemination and use affect the likelihood of success. Implications for dissemination practice and policy are identified. (Contains 67 references.) (YLB)

110. Assessing the Impact of Harassment by Peers: Incident Characteristics and Outcomes in a National Sample of Youth

- Abstract
Although there are widely held assumptions about the characteristics of peer bullying that are of greatest concern, very few studies have empirically assessed which characteristics most affect its impact. The current research addresses this gap by using a nationally representative U.S. sample of youth ages 10-20 to examine the relative effects of a variety of potentially aggravating incident characteristics on emotional, physical health, and school-related outcomes. Findings show support for power imbalance and duration (a stronger predictor than repetition) as incident characteristics that exacerbate the negative impact of peer harassment. However, several other incident characteristics have substantial effects with or without the presence of these qualities. Injury, sexual content, involvement of multiple perpetrators, and hate/bias components of peer harassment incidents each increased at least one negative outcome. Findings point to several features of peer harassment that can provide a basis for prioritizing victimization experiences in greatest need of intervention efforts.

370.15 ,Social class identity ,Novice teachers - Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the influence that social class identity has on the emerging professional identities of novice teachers. The study argues that schooling in the UK is classed in terms of its history, outcomes and processes, and as a result, situates teaching as a form of ‘class work’. Given the strong arguments for situating teaching in this way, this thesis seeks to increase our understanding about the way class actually works in relation to teachers’ identities and the impact this has on their work as teachers. This study was qualitative and longitudinal in nature and used semi-structured interviews as the main method of data collection. A group of eleven novice teachers were followed over a two year period as they both learnt to become teachers on a postgraduate initial teacher education programme and then one year later after most had started teaching in secondary schools. The thesis begins by examining the complexities of the heightened, emotive and fiercely debated issue of class and draws strongly on understandings that locate class in contemporary Britain as being about culture as well as social structures. It recognises that whilst the emerging professional identities of teachers are heavily shaped by life experiences prior to becoming a teacher, new and varied teaching experiences have the capacity to impact on the way teachers see themselves and their understandings of their work in schools. Using data rich stories of six of the novice teachers to exemplify the wider sample, this thesis illustrates the ways in which classed identity shapes novice teachers’ early understandings of schooling and becoming a teacher. It demonstrates that class really does matter for novice teachers but that it plays out in complex and sometimes contradictory ways. In particular, the thesis draws on the notion of social class boundaries and the way in which teaching often involves the crossing of these. The crossing of class boundaries is identified as being a central feature of the novice teacher experience. It is argued that class boundary crossing creates tensions for novice teachers not least because their own class identities are called into question and troubled by this process. One feature of this process is that many novice teachers recognise teaching as ‘class work’ and additionally understand that the cultural capital they bring to this context may not be equally valued in all educational settings. This can result in a class identity acting in restrictive and constraining ways. Whilst some novice teachers are bound by their class identities, others are able to play strategically with their class minimising the disadvantages of a perceived lack of appropriate cultural capital. This study suggests that the ability to know how and when to strategise is itself classed, a coping mechanism employed by middle rather than working class novice teachers. The study concludes by examining the implications of these findings for novice teachers and their preparation for work in schools. It argues that the classed identities of teachers need to be explicitly examined in a supportive and reflexive manner within initial teacher education.

616.1042 - Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signalling molecule of the central nervous system (CNS), immune system and vascular endothelium. In the vascular system NO acts as a vasodilator as well as having anti-thrombotic and atheroprotective functions. The development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a complex multifactorial process known to have a heritable component. The aim of this study therefore was to investigate the role of three candidate genes involved in regulation of NO synthesis and susceptibility to CVD. This study investigated the association between cardiovascular risk factors and polymorphisms in the p22phox subunit of NADPH oxidase, GTPCH1 and DDAH2. This study showed the previously identified C242T polymorphism in p22phox was associated with endothelium-dependent vasodilation in healthy subjects. Individuals homozygous for the T allele exhibited increased endothelium-dependent vasodilation compared to C allele carriers. Single strand conformational polymorphism analysis (SSCP) identified four polymorphisms within the GCH1 gene, three in the promoter (-577G/A, -741T/C and -796G/A) and one in intron 1 (599C/G). Genotyping of 2390 healthy men revealed an association between the -796 and -577 polymorphisms and circulating levels of neopterin. An association was also found between -796 genotype and endothelial function in a second cohort of 246 healthy subjects. SSCP of the DDAH2 gene identified six polymorphisms. Five in the promoter region at position - 1415G/A, -1151C/A, -1020C/G, -871 6G/7G and -449C/G and the sixth at position 618C/T within intron 4. No significant associations were identified between DDAH2 genotype and ADMA, SDMA ADMA/SDMA ratio or other cardiovascular disease risk factors in healthy subjects, renal failure patients or diabetics. In conclusion, this study has identified common polymorphisms in enzymes affecting NO synthesis or inactivation. Polymorphisms in the p22phox gene and GTPCH1 gene were associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease including endothelium-dependent vasodilation and plasma neopterin (a marker of BH4).

129. What Features Make Online Harassment Incidents Upsetting to Youth?
- Author

Mitchell, Kimberly J., Ybarra, Michele L., Jones, Lisa M., and Espelage, Dorothy
- Abstract
This article examines characteristics of online harassment episodes associated with increased distress for youth. Data were collected as part of the Third Youth Internet Safety Survey, a cross-sectional telephone survey conducted in the United States in 2010. Interviews were conducted with 1,560 Internet-using youth, ages 10 through 17. Harassment incidents involving multiple perpetrators, offline contact, and a power imbalance between victim and perpetrator were more likely to be upsetting to youth. As the number of aggravating features (i.e., multiple perpetrators, offline contact, power imbalance, repetition) that an incident included increased, the likelihood of distress also increased. Findings have important implications for schools and parents seeking to improve prevention and intervention efforts.

130. A Blueprint for Implementing Small-Group Collaborative Discussions

- Abstract
The adoption of the Common Core in many states across the country means we need to explore instructional approaches that promote student language use in order to meet many of the complex linguistic standards that comprise the Common Core. In this Teaching Tip, we provide a blueprint for a 4-week collaborative discussion mini-unit that a second grade teacher used in one of her small reading groups. We found that collaborative discussions can be implemented with relative ease and efficiency, and work with both bilingual and monolingual speakers alike. However, not all texts work for such discussions, and the teacher's role in facilitating participation is a necessary dimension of effective small group discussions.

This article describes a usability study of the University of Southern Mississippi Libraries website conducted in early 2016. The study involved six participants from each of four key user groups--undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and library employees--and consisted of six typical library search tasks, such as finding a book and an article on a topic, locating a journal by title, and looking up hours of operation. Library employees and graduate students completed the study's tasks most successfully, whereas undergraduate students performed relatively simple searches and relied on the Libraries' discovery tool, Primo. The study's results displayed several problematic features that affected each user group, including library employees. These results increased internal buy-in for usability-related changes to the library website in a later redesign., INTRODUCTION Within the last decade, usability testing has become a common way for libraries to assess their websites. Eager to gain a better understanding of how users experience our website, [...]

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD) that is more heritable, yet is understudied in psychiatric genetics. The authors conducted meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to investigate the genetic architecture of PPD. METHOD: Meta-analyses were conducted on 18 cohorts of European ancestry (17,339 PPD cases and 53,426 controls), one cohort of East Asian ancestry (975 cases and 3,780 controls), and one cohort of African ancestry (456 cases and 1,255 controls), totaling 18,770 PPD cases and 58,461 controls. Post-GWAS analyses included 1) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based heritability ([Formula: see text]), 2) genetic correlations between PPD and other phenotypes, and 3) enrichment of the PPD GWAS findings in 27 human tissues and 265 cell types from the mouse central and peripheral nervous system. RESULTS: No SNP achieved genome-wide significance in the European or the trans-ancestry meta-analyses. The [Formula: see text] of PPD was 0.14 (SE=0.02). Significant genetic correlations were estimated for PPD with MDD, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, insomnia, age at menarche, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Cell-type enrichment analyses implicate inhibitory neurons in the thalamus and cholinergic neurons within septal nuclei of the hypothalamus, a pattern that differs from MDD. CONCLUSIONS: While more samples are needed to reach genome-wide levels of significance, the results presented confirm PPD as a polygenic and heritable phenotype. There is also evidence that despite a high correlation with MDD, PPD may have unique genetic components. Cell enrichment results suggest GABAergic neurons, which converge on a common mechanism with the only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for PPD (brexanolone).

- Abstract
What is known on the subject?: Individuals experiencing mental illness make up a significant portion of the world's population. Individuals with mental illness experience higher rates of morbidity and die on average at least a decade earlier than individuals without mental health disorders. What this paper adds to existing knowledge?: Issues of stigma, diagnostic overshadowing, premature closure, inadequate workup, fear and lack of training negatively impact the care of individuals with mental illness. Issues impacting the care of individuals experiencing mental illness cross geographic and care setting boundaries. What are the implications for practice?: Partnerships between physical and mental health practitioners are needed to thoroughly assess and accurately diagnose symptoms experienced by individuals with mental illness. Educational interventions can help prepare practitioners to care for individuals with mental illness. Nurses can better advocate for effective patient care by learning about the phenomenon of diagnostic overshadowing and calling attention to its occurrence. Abstract: Introduction Individuals with mental illness experience significantly higher overall rates of morbidity and mortality than counterparts without mental illness. Misdiagnosis of symptoms emanating from physical illnesses as psychiatric in nature presents one important cause. Aim This integrative review explores research on healthcare professionals' misattribution of physical health symptoms to patients' comorbid psychiatric issues and seeks to identify unifying themes, shared causes, and possible strategies for addressing the issue. Method This review uses Whittemore and Knafl's 2005 integrative review methodology coupled with vetted quality appraisal tools. Results Following a systematic search of allied health, medical, psychological, sociological and general literature, 24 publications employing qualitative, quantitative, mixed and synthesis research methodologies were selected.

- Abstract
Rarely, immunophenotypically immature B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) carries an immunoglobulin-MYC rearrangement (IG-MYC-r). This can result in diagnostic confusion with Burkitt lymphoma/leukemia and use of individualized treatment schedules of unproven efficacy. Here we compare the molecular characteristics of these conditions and investigate historic clinical outcome data. We identified 90 cases registered in a national BCP-ALL clinical trial/registry. When present, diagnostic material underwent cytogenetic, exome, methylome and transcriptome analyses. The outcomes analyzed were 3-year event-free survival and overall survival. IG-MYC-r was identified in diverse cytogenetic backgrounds, co-existing with either established BCP-ALL-specific abnormalities (high hyperdiploidy, n=3; KMT2A-rearrangement, n=6; iAMP21, n=1; BCR-ABL1, n=1); BCL2/BCL6-rearrangements (n=15); or, most commonly, as the only defining feature (n=64). Within this final group, precursor-like V(D)J breakpoints predominated (8/9) and KRAS mutations were common (5/11). DNA methylation identified a cluster of V(D)J-rearranged cases, clearly distinct from Burkitt leukemia/lymphoma. Children with IG-MYC-r within that subgroup had a 3-year event-free survival of 47% and overall survival of 60%, representing a high-risk BCP-ALL. To develop effective management strategies this group of patients must be allowed access to contemporary, minimal residual disease-adapted, prospective clinical trial protocols.

Objective: Suicidal behavior is heritable and is a major cause of death worldwide. Two large-scale genome-wide asso-ciation studies (GWASs) recently discovered and cross- validated genome-wide significant (GWS) loci for suicide attempt (SA). The present study leveraged the genetic co-horts from both studies to conduct the largest GWAS meta- analysis of SA to date. Multi-ancestry and admixture-specific meta-analyses were conducted within groups of significant African, East Asian, and European ancestry admixtures. Methods: This study comprised 22 cohorts, including 43,871 SA cases and 915,025 ancestry-matched controls. Analytical methods across multi-ancestry and individual ancestry ad-mixtures included inverse variance-weighted fixed-effects meta-analyses, followed by gene, gene-set, tissue-set, and drug-target enrichment, as well as summary-data-based Mendelian randomization with brain expression quantitative trait loci data, phenome-wide genetic correlation, and ge-netic causal proportion analyses. Results: Multi-ancestry and European ancestry admixture GWAS meta-analyses identified 12 risk loci at p values <5×10–8. These loci were mostly intergenic and implicated DRD2, SLC6A9, FURIN, NLGN1, SOX5, PDE4B, and CACNG2. The multi-ancestry SNP-based heritability estimate of SA was 5.7% on the liability scale (SE=0.003, p=5.7×10–80). Significant brain tissue gene expression and drug set en-richment were observed. There was shared genetic variation of SA with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, smoking, and risk tolerance after conditioning SA on both major de-pressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Genetic causal proportion analyses implicated shared genetic risk for specific health factors. Conclusions: This multi-ancestry analysis of suicide attempt identified several loci contributing to risk and establishes significant shared genetic covariation with clinical pheno-types. - Abstract
This paper reports a small-scale research project which took place in one primary school in the north-east of England. The study aimed to listen to children's views about how the practices of teachers helped and/or hindered their sense of inclusion in classrooms. Inclusion was understood here in a broad sense rather than specifically relating to children with special educational needs. Participatory research tools were used as part of group interviews with children from three different year groups. Even though the children were mostly happy with their school experience, it was noticeable that there were some areas for concern for some children that related to four interconnecting themes: unfairness, shouting, loneliness and seating plans. All of these themes seemed to be connected with children's interpersonal relationships - with teachers and with each other - and can be seen as crucial in terms of understanding inclusion in schools and further developing existing practices.
