In the ever-evolving landscape of AI, moral educators play a crucial role in promoting the positive development of youth and addressing potential ethical challenges posed by AI. This study employed Q methodology to explore the perceptions of 30 South Korean preservice ethics teachers on AI ethics education, and five distinct perception types emerged: Human-Centered Ethical Guardians of AI, AI Skeptics, AI Abuse Preventers, Competence Cultivators for Coexistence with AI, and AI Social Justice Advocates. These five types encapsulate the distinct gestalt of individuals that intertwines various perceptions regarding AI ethics principles as well as AI technology, the future of the AI era, and the purpose of AI ethics education. By aligning educational approaches with individuals’ perception types, teacher education programs can contribute to a more balanced viewpoint on AI and AI ethics education among preservice teachers.
