The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the key processes for electrochemical energy storage, such as the cathode process in fuel cells and metal–air batteries. To date, the efficiency of the ORR half-reaction limits the overall performance of these energy storage devices. Traditional platinum-based materials are expensive and cannot provide the desired ORR efficiency. As an alternative, a new catalytic scheme for an ORR was proposed, which consisted of an electrode modified with a TEMPO-containing conductive polymer and a solution redox mediator system based on nitrogen oxides (NOx). NOx is perfect for oxygen reduction in solution, which, however, cannot be efficiently reduced onto a pristine electrode, while TEMPO is inactive in the ORR itself but catalyzes the electrochemical reduction of NO2 on the electrode surface. Together, these catalysts have a synergistic effect, enabling an efficient ORR in an acidic medium. In the present study, the synthesis of a novel TEMPO-containing conductive polymer and its application in the synergistic ORR system with a NOx mediator is described. The proposed mediator system may increase the performance of proton-exchange fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Icy grains in the interstellar medium and star formation regions consist of a variety of materials. Such composite grains interact differently with cosmic-ray (CR) particles compared to simple single-material grains. We aim to calculate the spectra of energies and temperatures of mixed-composition grains undergoing whole-grain heating by CRs. The grains were assumed to consist of a mixture of carbon and olivine, covered by ices consisting of carbon oxides and water. The energy and temperature spectra for grains with radii 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 μm impacted by CRs were calculated for eight values of column density, relevant to molecular clouds and star-forming cores. The approach takes into account changes in ice thickness and composition with increasing column density. These detailed data for CR interaction with interstellar grains are intended for applications in astrochemical models. The main finding is that a more accurate approach on grain heat capacity and other factors prevent frequent heating of 0.1 μm or larger icy grains to high temperatures.

Multipodal salicylaldehydes have attracted much scientific interest as scaffolds for the construction of multinuclear complexes, as well as metal and covalent organic frameworks. Herein, we report a preparation of 4′,4′′′,4′′′′′-nitrilotris(4-methoxy-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carbaldehyde), a direct precursor for the tripodal salicylaldehyde with triphenylamine core. The structure of the product was confirmed by molecular spectroscopy. The reported approach may be broadened over a variety of multipodal salicylaldehydes.

Special Issue: The ENIGMA Consortium: the first 10 years.-- Karolinska Schizophrenia Project (KaSP)., Age has a major effect on brain volume. However, the normative studies available are constrained by small sample sizes, restricted age coverage and significant methodological variability. These limitations introduce inconsistencies and may obscure or distort the lifespan trajectories of brain morphometry. In response, we capitalized on the resources of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to examine age-related trajectories inferred from cross-sectional measures of the ventricles, the basal ganglia (caudate, putamen, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens), the thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala using magnetic resonance imaging data obtained from 18,605 individuals aged 3–90 years. All subcortical structure volumes were at their maximum value early in life. The volume of the basal ganglia showed a monotonic negative association with age thereafter; there was no significant association between age and the volumes of the thalamus, amygdala and the hippocampus (with some degree of decline in thalamus) until the sixth decade of life after which they also showed a steep negative association with age. The lateral ventricles showed continuous enlargement throughout the lifespan. Age was positively associated with inter-individual variability in the hippocampus and amygdala and the lateral ventricles. SummaryAn effective vaccine to address the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an urgent public health priority1. Novel synthetic mRNA and vector-based vaccine technologies offer an expeditious development path alternative to traditional vaccine approaches. Here we describe the efforts to utilize an mRNA platform for rational design and evaluations of mRNA vaccine candidates based on Spike (S) glycoprotein of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus causing COVID-19. Several mRNA constructs expressing various structural conformations of S-protein, including wild type (WT), a pre-fusion stabilized mutant (2P), a furin cleavage-site mutant (GSAS) and a double mutant form (2P/GSAS), were tested in a preclinical animal model for their capacity to elicit neutralizing antibodies (nAbs). The lead 2P/GSAS candidate was further assessed in dose-ranging studies in mice and Cynomolgus macaques. The selected 2P/GSAS vaccine formulation, now designated MRT5500, elicited potent nAbs as measured in two types of neutralization assays. In addition, MRT5500 elicited TH1-biased responses in both mouse and non-human primate species, a result that helps to address a hypothetical concern regarding potential vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory diseases associated with TH2-biased responses. These data position MRT5500 as a viable vaccine candidate for clinical development against COVID-19.

Context. Evaporative (sublimation) cooling of icy interstellar grains occurs when the grains have been suddenly heated by a cosmic-ray (CR) particle or other process. It results in thermal desorption of icy species, affecting the chemical composition of interstellar clouds. Aims. We investigate details on sublimation cooling, obtaining necessary knowledge before this process is considered in astrochemical models. Methods. We employed a numerical code that describes the sublimation of molecules from an icy grain, layer by layer, also considering a limited diffusion of bulk-ice molecules toward the surface before they sublimate. We studied a grain, suddenly heated to peak temperature T, which cools via sublimation and radiation. Results. A number of questions were answered. The choice of grain heat capacity C has a limited effect on the number of sublimated molecules N, if the grain temperature T > 40K. For grains with different sizes, CR-induced desorption is most efficient for rather small grains with a core radius of a ~ 0.02 micron. CR-induced sublimation of CO2 ice can occur only from small grains if their peak temperature is T > 80K and there is a lack of other volatiles. The presence of H2 molecules on grain surface hastens their cooling and thus significantly reduces N for other sublimated molecules for T < 30K. Finally, if there is no diffusion and subsequent sublimation of bulk-ice molecules (i.e., sublimation occurs only from the surface layer), sublimation yields do not exceed 1-2 monolayers and, if T > 50K, N does not increase with increasing T. Conclusions. Important details regarding the sublimation cooling of icy interstellar grains were clarified, which will enable a proper consideration of this process in astrochemical modeling., Accepted for publication in A&A

Delineating age-related cortical trajectories in healthy individuals is critical given the association of cortical thickness with cognition and behaviour. Previous research has shown that deriving robust estimates of age-related brain morphometric changes requires large-scale studies. In response, we conducted a large-scale analysis of cortical thickness in 17,075 individuals aged 3-90 years by pooling data through the Lifespan Working group of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium. We used fractional polynomial (FP) regression to characterize age-related trajectories in cortical thickness, and we computed normalized growth centiles using the parametric Lambda, Mu, and Sigma (LMS) method. Inter-individual variability was estimated using meta-analysis and one-way analysis of variance. Overall, cortical thickness peaked in childhood and had a steep decrease during the first 2-3 decades of life; thereafter, it showed a gradual monotonic decrease which was steeper in men than in women particularly in middle-life. Notable exceptions to this general pattern were entorhinal, temporopolar and anterior cingulate cortices. Inter-individual variability was largest in temporal and frontal regions across the lifespan. Age and its FP combinations explained up to 59% variance in cortical thickness. These results reconcile uncertainties about age-related trajectories of cortical thickness; the centile values provide estimates of normative variance in cortical thickness, and may assist in detecting abnormal deviations in cortical thickness, and associated behavioural, cognitive and clinical outcomes.

These results were robust to potential confounders and could be used to derive risk predictions for the early identification of diverse clinical phenotypes.

The aim of this work is to highlight the possibility of energy gains through heat recovery in an industrial plant. It was carried out in a poultry slaughterhouse, which, within its processes, consumes a very high amount of energy in various forms. It shows the usage of steam, its purpose, and why there is currently such a strong dependence on this resource. Alternatives were found for complete replacement of this energy input. In addition to the heat recovery from lubricating oil of air compressors and from refrigerant desuperheating processes after the discharge of the refrigeration compressors, the most interesting alternative was a water heater powered by mixed fuel. The mass of the proposed fuel mixture was 90% made of wood chip with 10% centrifuged sludge from the company effluent treatment station. From measurements made in the productive process relative to the consumption of water for sanitation, and from the availability of residual heat from processes, a water heater working with the mentioned fuel mixture has been proposed, reaching a payback of the investment predicted up to 3 years and 7 months. The project ensured the supply of hot water without using steam at a lower cost, which also achieved significant environmental gains. RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue destacar la posibilidad de ganancias de energía por médio de la recuperación de calor en una planta industrial. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en un matadero de aves, que en sus procesos consume una cantidad muy alta de energía en varias formas. Se muestra el uso del vapor, su propósito y por qué existe actualmente una dependencia tan fuerte de este recurso. Se encontraron alternativas para el reemplazo completo de esta entrada de energía. Además de la recuperación de calor del aceite lubricante de los compresores de aire y del proceso de desalentamiento del refrigerante después de la descarga de los compresores de refrigeración, la alternativa más interesante fue un calentador de agua alimentado con combustible mixto. La la massa de la mezcla de combustible propuesta era em um 90% hecha de astillas de madera con 10% de lodos centrifugados de la estación de tratamiento de efluentes de la compañía. A partir de las mediciones realizadas en el proceso productivo en relación con el consumo de agua para saneamento, y de la disponibilidad de calor residual de los procesos, se ha propuesto un calentador de agua que funciona con dicha mezcla, alcanzando una recuperación de la inversión prevista hasta 3 años y 7 meses. El proyecto aseguró el suministro de agua caliente sin utilizar vapor a un costo menor, lo que también logró importantes beneficios ambientales.

A model based on the generation and recombination of defect was developed to describe the stability of stacking faults and basal plane dislocation loops in crystals with layered polytype structures. The stability of the defects configuration was analysed for stacking faults surrounded by Shockley and Frank partial dislocation as well as Shockley dislocation dipoles with long range elastic fields. This approach allows the qualitative prediction of defect subsystems in polytype structure in external fields.
