We present the full panchromatic afterglow light curve data of GW170817, including new radio data as well as archival optical and X-ray data, between 0.5 and 940 days post-merger. By compiling all archival data, and reprocessing a subset of it, we have evaluated the impact of differences in data processing or flux determination methods used by different groups, and attempted to mitigate these differences to provide a more uniform dataset. Simple power-law fits to the uniform afterglow light curve indicate a $t^{0.86\pm0.04}$ rise, a $t^{-1.92\pm0.12}$ decline, and a peak occurring at $155\pm4$ days. The afterglow is optically thin throughout its evolution, consistent with a single spectral index ($-0.584\pm0.002$) across all epochs. This gives a precise and updated estimate of the electron power-law index, $p=2.168\pm0.004$. By studying the diffuse X-ray emission from the host galaxy, we place a conservative upper limit on the hot ionized ISM density, $<$0.01 cm$^{-3}$, consistent with previous afterglow studies. Using the late-time afterglow data we rule out any long-lived neutron star remnant having magnetic field strength between 10$^{10.4}$ G and 10$^{16}$ G. Our fits to the afterglow data using an analytical model that includes VLBI proper motion from Mooley et al. (2018), and a structured jet model that ignores the proper motion, indicates that the proper motion measurement needs to be considered while seeking an accurate estimate of the viewing angle., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. When galaxies merge, the supermassive black holes in their centers may form binaries and, during the process of merger, emit low-frequency gravitational radiation in the process. In this paper we consider the galaxy 3C66B, which was used as the target of the first multi-messenger search for gravitational waves. Due to the observed periodicities present in the photometric and astrometric data of the source of the source, it has been theorized to contain a supermassive black hole binary. Its apparent 1.05-year orbital period would place the gravitational wave emission directly in the pulsar timing band. Since the first pulsar timing array study of 3C66B, revised models of the source have been published, and timing array sensitivities and techniques have improved dramatically. With these advances, we further constrain the chirp mass of the potential supermassive black hole binary in 3C66B to less than $(1.65\pm0.02) \times 10^9~{M_\odot}$ using data from the NANOGrav 11-year data set. This upper limit provides a factor of 1.6 improvement over previous limits, and a factor of 4.3 over the first search done. Nevertheless, the most recent orbital model for the source is still consistent with our limit from pulsar timing array data. In addition, we are able to quantify the improvement made by the inclusion of source properties gleaned from electromagnetic data to `blind' pulsar timing array searches. With these methods, it is apparent that it is not necessary to obtain exact a priori knowledge of the period of a binary to gain meaningful astrophysical inferences., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present a new analysis of the profile data from the 47 millisecond pulsars comprising the 12.5-year data set of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), which is presented in a parallel paper (Alam et al. 2021a; NG12.5). Our reprocessing is performed using "wideband" timing methods, which use frequency-dependent template profiles, simultaneous time-of-arrival (TOA) and dispersion measure (DM) measurements from broadband observations, and novel analysis techniques. In particular, the wideband DM measurements are used to constrain the DM portion of the timing model. We compare the ensemble timing results to NG12.5 by examining the timing residuals, timing models, and noise model components. There is a remarkable level of agreement across all metrics considered. Our best-timed pulsars produce encouragingly similar results to those from NG12.5. In certain cases, such as high-DM pulsars with profile broadening, or sources that are weak and scintillating, wideband timing techniques prove to be beneficial, leading to more precise timing model parameters by 10-15%. The high-precision, multi-band measurements of several pulsars indicate frequency-dependent DMs. Compared to the narrowband analysis in NG12.5, the TOA volume is reduced by a factor of 33, which may ultimately facilitate computational speed-ups for complex pulsar timing array analyses. We present time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements and timing models of 47 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) observed from 2004 to 2017 at the Arecibo Observatory and the Green Bank Telescope by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). The observing cadence was three to four weeks for most pulsars over most of this time span, with weekly observations of six sources. These data were collected for use in low-frequency gravitational wave searches and for other astrophysical purposes. We detail our observational methods and present a set of TOA measurements, based on "narrowband" analysis, in which many TOAs are calculated within narrow radio-frequency bands for data collected simultaneously across a wide bandwidth. A separate set of "wideband" TOAs will be presented in a companion paper. We detail a number of methodological changes compared to our previous work which yield a cleaner and more uniformly processed data set. Our timing models include several new astrometric and binary pulsar measurements, including previously unpublished values for the parallaxes of PSRs J1832-0836 and J2322+2057, the secular derivatives of the projected semi-major orbital axes of PSRs J0613-0200 and J2229+2643, and the first detection of the Shapiro delay in PSR J2145-0750. We report detectable levels of red noise in the time series for 14 pulsars. As a check on timing model reliability, we investigate the stability of astrometric parameters across data sets of different lengths. We report flux density measurements for all pulsars observed. Recently, Kundu et al (2019) reported that the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53) possesses five extra-tidal RR Lyrae. In fact, four of them were instead known members of a nearby globular cluster NGC 5053. The status of the remaining extra-tidal RR Lyrae is controversial depending on the adopted tidal radius of NGC 5024. We have also searched for additional extra-tidal RR Lyrae within an area of $\sim8$~deg$^2$ covering both globular clusters. This includes other known RR Lyrae within the search area, as well as stars that fall within the expected range of magnitudes and colors for RR Lyrae (and yet outside the cutoff of 2/3 of the tidal radii of each globular clusters for something to be called "extra-tidal") if they were extra-tidal RR Lyrae candidates for NGC 5024 or NGC 5053. Based on the the proper motion information and their locations on the color-magnitude diagram, none of the known RR Lyrae belong to the extra-tidal RR Lyrae of either globular clusters. In the cases where the stars satisfied the magnitude and color ranges of RR Lyrae, analysis of time series data taken from the Zwicky Transient Facility do not reveal periodicities, suggesting that none of these stars are RR Lyrae. The discovery rate of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is increasing dramatically thanks to new radio facilities. Meanwhile, wide-field instruments such as the 47 deg$^2$ Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey the optical sky to study transient and variable sources. We present serendipitous ZTF observations of the CHIME repeating source FRB 180916.J0158+65, that was localized to a spiral galaxy 149 Mpc away and is the first FRB suggesting periodic modulation in its activity. While 147 ZTF exposures corresponded to expected high-activity periods of this FRB, no single ZTF exposure was at the same time as a CHIME detection. No $>3\sigma$ optical source was found at the FRB location in 683 ZTF exposures, totalling 5.69 hours of integration time. We combined ZTF upper limits and expected repetitions from FRB 180916.J0158+65 in a statistical framework using a Weibull distribution, agnostic of periodic modulation priors. The analysis yielded a constraint on the ratio between the optical and radio fluences of $\eta \lesssim 200$, corresponding to an optical energy $E_{\rm opt} \lesssim 3 \times 10^{46}$ erg for a fiducial 10 Jy ms FRB (90% confidence). A deeper (but less statistically robust) constraint of $\eta \lesssim 3$ can be placed assuming a rate of $r(>5$ Jy ms)= hr$^{-1}$ and $1.2\pm 1.1$ FRB occurring during exposures taken in high-activity windows. The constraint can be improved with shorter per-image exposures and longer integration time, or observing FRBs at higher Galactic latitudes. PSR J1012+5307, a millisecond pulsar in orbit with a helium white dwarf (WD), has been timed with high precision for about 25 years. One of the main objectives of this long-term timing is to use the large asymmetry in gravitational binding energy between the neutron star and the WD to test gravitational theories. Such tests, however, will be eventually limited by the accuracy of the distance to the pulsar. Here, we present VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) astrometry results spanning approximately 2.5 years for PSR J1012+5307, obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array as part of the MSPSRPI project. These provide the first proper motion and absolute position for PSR J1012+5307 measured in a quasi-inertial reference frame. From the VLBI results, we measure a distance of $0.83^{+0.06}_{-0.02}$kpc (all the estimates presented in the abstract are at 68% confidence) for PSR J1012+5307, which is the most precise obtained to date. Using the new distance, we improve the uncertainty of measurements of the unmodeled contributions to orbital period decay, which, combined with three other pulsars, places new constraints on the coupling constant for dipole gravitational radiation $\kappa_D=(-1.7\pm1.7)\times 10^{-4}$ and the fractional time derivative of Newton's gravitational constant $\dot{G}/G = -1.8^{\,+5.6}_{\,-4.7}\times 10^{-13}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ in the local universe. As the uncertainties of the observed decays of orbital period for the four leading pulsar-WD systems become negligible in $\approx10$ years, the uncertainties for $\dot{G}/G$ and $\kappa_D$ will be improved to $\leq1.5\times10^{-13}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ and $\leq1.0\times10^{-4}$, respectively, predominantly limited by the distance uncertainties., Comment: published in ApJ (2020ApJ...896...85D)

We report the discovery of the first short period binary in which a hot subdwarf star (sdOB) fills its Roche lobe and started mass transfer to its companion. The object was discovered as part of a dedicated high-cadence survey of the Galactic Plane named the Zwicky Transient Facility and exhibits a period of $P_{\rm orb}=39.3401(1)$ min, making it the most compact hot subdwarf binary currently known. Spectroscopic observations are consistent with an intermediate He-sdOB star with an effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff}=42,400\pm300$ K and a surface gravity of $\log(g)=5.77\pm0.05$. A high-signal-to noise GTC+HiPERCAM light curve is dominated by the ellipsoidal deformation of the sdOB star and an eclipse of the sdOB by an accretion disk. We infer a low-mass hot subdwarf donor with a mass $M_{\rm sdOB}=0.337\pm0.015$ M$_\odot$ and a white dwarf accretor with a mass $M_{\rm WD}=0.545\pm0.020$ M$_\odot$. Theoretical binary modeling indicates the hot subdwarf formed during a common envelope phase when a $2.5-2.8$ M$_\odot$ star lost its envelope when crossing the Hertzsprung Gap. To match its current $P_{\rm orb}$, $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log(g)$, and masses, we estimate a post-common envelope period of $P_{\rm orb}\approx150$ min, and find the sdOB star is currently undergoing hydrogen shell burning. We estimate that the hot subdwarf will become a white dwarf with a thick helium layer of $\approx0.1$ M$_\odot$ and will merge with its carbon/oxygen white dwarf companion after $\approx17$ Myr and presumably explode as a thermonuclear supernova or form an R CrB star., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 21 pages, 12 figures and 4 tables

The jet opening angle and inclination of GW170817 -- the first detected binary neutron star merger -- were vital to understand its energetics, relation to short gamma-ray bursts, and refinement of the standard siren-based determination of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. These basic quantities were determined through a combination of the radio lightcurve and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of proper motion. In this paper we discuss and quantify the prospects for the use of radio VLBI observations and observations of scintillation-induced variability to measure the source size and proper motion of merger afterglows, and thereby infer properties of the merger including inclination angle, opening angle and energetics. We show that these techniques are complementary as they probe different parts of the circum-merger density/inclination angle parameter space and different periods of the temporal evolution of the afterglow. We also find that while VLBI observations will be limited to the very closest events it will be possible to detect scintillation for a large fraction of events beyond the range of current gravitational wave detectors. Scintillation will also be detectable with next generation telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array, 2000 antenna Deep Synoptic Array and the next generation Very Large Array, for a large fraction of events detected with third generation gravitational wave detectors. Finally, we discuss prospects for the measurement of the $H_0$ with VLBI observations of neutron star mergers and compare this technique to other standard siren methods.

On 2019 August 14, the Advanced LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected the high-significance gravitational wave (GW) signal S190814bv. The GW data indicated that the event resulted from a neutron star--black hole (NSBH) merger, or potentially a low-mass binary black hole merger. Due to the low false alarm rate and the precise localization (23 deg$^2$ at 90\%), S190814bv presented the community with the best opportunity yet to directly observe an optical/near-infrared counterpart to a NSBH merger. To search for potential counterparts, the GROWTH collaboration performed real-time image subtraction on 6 nights of public Dark Energy Camera (DECam) images acquired in the three weeks following the merger, covering $>$98\% of the localization probability. Using a worldwide network of follow-up facilities, we systematically undertook spectroscopy and imaging of optical counterpart candidates. Combining these data with a photometric redshift catalog, we ruled out each candidate as the counterpart to S190814bv and we placed deep, uniform limits on the optical emission associated with S190814bv. For the nearest consistent GW distance, radiative transfer simulations of NSBH mergers constrain the ejecta mass of S190814bv to be $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.04$~$M_{\odot}$ at polar viewing angles, or $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.03$~$M_{\odot}$ if the opacity is $\kappa < 2$~cm$^2$g$^{-1}$. Assuming a tidal deformability for the neutron star at the high end of the range compatible with GW170817 results, our limits would constrain the BH spin component aligned with the orbital momentum to be $ \chi < 0.7$ for mass ratios $Q < 6$, with weaker constraints for more compact neutron stars. We present results from a search for a radio transient associated with the LIGO/Virgo source S190814bv, a likely neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger, with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. We imaged a $30\,{\rm deg}^2$ field at $\Delta T$=2, 9 and 33 days post-merger at a frequency of 944\,MHz, comparing them to reference images from the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey observed 110 days prior to the event. Each epoch of our observations covers $89\%$ of the LIGO/Virgo localisation region. We conducted an untargeted search for radio transients in this field, resulting in 21 candidates. For one of these, \object[AT2019osy]{AT2019osy}, we performed multi-wavelength follow-up and ultimately ruled out the association with S190814bv. All other candidates are likely unrelated variables, but we cannot conclusively rule them out. We discuss our results in the context of model predictions for radio emission from neutron star-black hole mergers and place constrains on the circum-merger density and inclination angle of the merger. This survey is simultaneously the first large-scale radio follow-up of an NSBH merger, and the most sensitive widefield radio transients search to-date.

We report the discovery of a detached double white dwarf binary with an orbital period of $\approx20.6\,\rm minutes$, PTF J053332.05+020911.6. The visible object in this binary, PTF J0533+0209B, is a $\approx 0.17\,M_\odot$ mass white dwarf with a helium-dominated atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen (DBA). This object exhibits ellipsoidal variations due to tidal deformation, and is the visible component in a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a velocity semi-amplitude of $K_B=618.7\pm6.9 \, \rm km \, s^{-1}$. We have detected significant orbital decay due to the emission of gravitational radiation, and we expect that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect this system with a signal to noise of $8.4^{+4.2}_{-3.0}$ after four years of operation. Because this system already has a well determined orbital period, radial velocity semi-amplitude, temperature, atmospheric composition, surface gravity, and orbital decay rate, a LISA signal will help fully constrain the properties of this system by providing a direct measurement of its inclination. The third observing run by LVC has brought the discovery of many compact binary coalescences. Following the detection of the first binary neutron star merger in this run (LIGO/Virgo S190425z), we performed a dedicated follow-up campaign with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Palomar Gattini-IR telescopes. The initial skymap of this single-detector gravitational wave (GW) trigger spanned most of the sky observable from Palomar Observatory. Covering 8000 deg$^2$ of the initial skymap over the next two nights, corresponding to 46\% integrated probability, ZTF system achieved a depth of $\approx$\,21 $m_\textrm{AB}$ in $g$- and $r$-bands. Palomar Gattini-IR covered 2200 square degrees in $J$-band to a depth of 15.5\,mag, including 32\% integrated probability based on the initial sky map. The revised skymap issued the following day reduced these numbers to 21\% for the Zwicky Transient Facility and 19\% for Palomar Gattini-IR. We narrowed 338,646 ZTF transient "alerts" over the first two nights of observations to 15 candidate counterparts. Two candidates, ZTF19aarykkb and ZTF19aarzaod, were particularly compelling given that their location, distance, and age were consistent with the GW event, and their early optical lightcurves were photometrically consistent with that of kilonovae. These two candidates were spectroscopically classified as young core-collapse supernovae. The remaining candidates were ruled-out as supernovae. Palomar Gattini-IR did not identify any viable candidates with multiple detections only after merger time. We demonstrate that even with single-detector GW events localized to thousands of square degrees, systematic kilonova discovery is feasible.

Low mass, low metallicity galaxies at low to moderate ($z\lesssim3$) redshifts offer the best opportunity for detailed examination of the interplay between massive stars, ionizing radiation and gas in sources similar to those that likely reionized the universe. We present new narrowband Hubble Space Telescope observations of Ly$\alpha$ emission and the adjacent ultraviolet (UV) continuum in the low mass ($M_{\star} = 2 \times 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$), low metallicity ($Z\sim1/20$ Z$_{\odot}$) and highly ionized gravitationally lensed galaxy SL2S J02176$-$0513 at $z=1.844$. The galaxy has strong Ly$\alpha$ emission with photometric equivalent width $W^{\rm phot}_{\rm{Ly}\alpha} = 218 \pm 12$ \AA, at odds with the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction of 10%. However, the spectroscopic Ly$\alpha$ profile suggests the presence of broad absorption underlying the emission, and the total equivalent width is consistent with the escape fraction once this underlying absorption is included. The Ly$\alpha$ emission is more spatially extended than the UV continuum, and the 0.14" spatial resolution of HST coupled with the magnification of gravitational lensing enables us to examine the distribution of Ly$\alpha$ and the UV continuum on sub-kiloparsec scales. We find that the peaks of the Ly$\alpha$ emission and the UV continuum are offset by 650 pc, and there is no Ly$\alpha$ emission arising from the region with the strongest UV light. Our combined spectroscopic and imaging data imply a significant range in neutral hydrogen column density across the object. These observations offer indirect support for a model in which ionizing radiation escapes from galaxies through channels with low column density of neutral gas., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. General relativity predicts that short orbital period binaries emit significant gravitational radiation, and the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to detect tens of thousands of such systems; however, few have been identified, and only one is eclipsing--the double white dwarf binary SDSS J065133.338+284423.37, which has an orbital period of 12.75 minutes. Here, we report the discovery of an eclipsing double white dwarf binary system with an orbital period of only 6.91 minutes, ZTF J153932.16+502738.8. This system has an orbital period close to half that of SDSS J065133.338+284423.37 and an orbit so compact that the entire binary could fit within the diameter of the planet Saturn. The system exhibits a deep eclipse, and a double-lined spectroscopic nature. We observe rapid orbital decay, consistent with that expected from general relativity. ZTF J153932.16+502738.8 is a significant source of gravitational radiation close to the peak of LISA's sensitivity, and should be detected within the first week of LISA observations., Comment: 44 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. In this paper we demonstrate improved techniques to extend coherent processing intervals for passive radar processing, with the Murchison Widefield Array. Specifically, we apply a two stage linear range and Doppler migration compensation by utilising Keystone Formatting and a recent dechirping method. These methods are used to further demonstrate the potential for the surveillance of space with the Murchison Widefield Array using passive radar, by detecting objects orders of magnitude smaller than previous work. The last couple of decades have seen an emergence of transient detection facilities in various avenues of time domain astronomy which has provided us with a rich dataset of transients. The rates of these transients have implications in star formation, progenitor models, evolution channels and cosmology measurements. The crucial component of any rate calculation is the detectability and space-time volume sensitivity of a survey to a particular transient type as a function of many intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. Fully sampling that multi-dimensional parameter space is challenging. Instead, we present a scheme to assess the detectability of transients using supervised machine learning. The data product is a classifier that determines the detection likelihood of sources resulting from an image subtraction pipeline associated with time domain survey telescopes, taking into consideration the intrinsic properties of the transients and the observing conditions. We apply our method to assess the space-time volume sensitivity of type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) in the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) and obtain the result,$\langle VT\rangle_{\mathrm{Ia}}=2.93\pm 0.21\times 10^{-2}\mathrm{Gpc^{3}yr}$. With rate estimates in the literature, this volume sensitivity gives a count of $680-1160$ SNe~Ia detectable by iPTF which is consistent with the archival data. With a view toward wider applicability of this technique we do a preliminary computation for long-duration type IIp supernovae (SNe~IIp) and find $\langle VT\rangle_{\mathrm{IIp}}=7.80\pm0.76\times10^{-4}\mathrm{Gpc^{3}yr}$. This classifier can be used for computationally fast space-time volume sensitivity calculation of any generic transient type using their lightcurve properties. Active M-dwarfs are known to produce bursty radio emission, and multi-wavelength studies have shown that Solar-like magnetic activity occurs in these stars. However, coherent bursts from active M-dwarfs have often been difficult to interpret in the Solar activity paradigm. We present Australian Square Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations of UV Ceti at a central frequency of 888 MHz. We detect several periodic, coherent pulses occurring over a timescale consistent with the rotational period of UV Ceti. The properties of the pulsed emission show that they originate from the electron cyclotron maser instability, in a cavity $\sim7$ orders of magnitude less dense than the mean coronal density at the estimated source altitude. These results confirm that auroral activity can occur in active M-dwarfs, suggesting that these stars mark the beginning of the transition from Solar-like to auroral magnetospheric behaviour. We describe ZStreak, a semi-real-time pipeline specialized in detecting small, fast-moving near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) that is currently operating on the data from the newly-commissioned Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. Based on a prototype originally developed by Waszczak et al. (2017) for the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), the predecessor of ZTF, ZStreak features an improved machine-learning model that can cope with the $10\times$ data rate increment between PTF and ZTF. Since its first discovery on 2018 February 5 (2018 CL), ZTF/ZStreak has discovered $45$ confirmed new NEAs over a total of 232 observable nights until 2018 December 31. Most of the discoveries are small NEAs, with diameters less than $\sim100$ m. By analyzing the discovery circumstances, we find that objects having the first to last detection time interval under 2 hr are at risk of being lost. We will further improve real-time follow-up capabilities, and work on suppressing false positives using deep learning., Comment: PASP in press

The identification of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave event, GW170817, and discovery of neutrinos and gamma-rays from TXS 0506+056 heralded the new era of multi-messenger astrophysics. As the number of multi-messenger events rapidly grow over the next decade, the cyberinfrastructure requirements to handle the increase in data rates, data volume, need for event follow up, and analysis across the different messengers will also explosively grow. The cyberinfrastructure requirements to enhance multi-messenger astrophysics will both be a major challenge and opportunity for astronomers, physicists, computer scientists and cyberinfrastructure specialists. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a public-private enterprise, is a new time domain survey employing a dedicated camera on the Palomar 48-inch Schmidt telescope with a 47 deg$^2$ field of view and 8 second readout time. It is well positioned in the development of time domain astronomy, offering operations at 10% of the scale and style of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) with a single 1-m class survey telescope. The public surveys will cover the observable northern sky every three nights in g and r filters and the visible Galactic plane every night in g and r. Alerts generated by these surveys are sent in real time to brokers. A consortium of universities which provided funding ("partnership") are undertaking several boutique surveys. The combination of these surveys producing one million alerts per night allows for exploration of transient and variable astrophysical phenomena brighter than r $\sim$ 20.5 on timescales of minutes to years. There is significant interest in the models for production of short gamma-ray bursts. Until now, the number of known short gamma-ray bursts with multi-wavelength afterglows has been small. While the {\it Fermi} Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor detects many gamma-ray bursts relative to the Neil Gehrels {\it Swift} Observatory, the large localization regions makes the search for counterparts difficult. With the Zwicky Transient Facility recently achieving first light, it is now fruitful to use its combination of depth ($m_\textrm{AB} \sim 20.6$), field of view ($\approx$ 47 square degrees), and survey cadence (every $\sim 3$ days) to perform Target of Opportunity observations. We demonstrate this capability on GRB 180523B, which was recently announced by the {\it Fermi} Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor as a short gamma-ray burst. ZTF imaged $\approx$ 2900\,square degrees of the localization region, resulting in the coverage of 61.6\,\% of the enclosed probability over 2 nights to a depth of $m_\textrm{AB} \sim 20.5$. We characterized 14 previously unidentified transients, and none were found to be consistent with a short gamma-ray burst counterpart. This search with the Zwicky Transient Facility shows it is an efficient camera for searching for coarsely-localized short gamma-ray burst and gravitational-wave counterparts, allowing for a sensitive search with minimal interruption to its nominal cadence.

We report our Spitzer Space Telescope observations and detections of the binary neutron star merger GW170817. At 4.5um, GW170817 is detected at 21.9 mag AB at +43 days and 23.9 mag AB at +74 days after merger. At 3.6um, GW170817 is not detected to a limit of 23.2 mag AB at +43 days and 23.1 mag AB at +74 days. Our detections constitute the latest and reddest constraints on the kilonova/macronova emission and composition of heavy elements. The 4.5um luminosity at this late phase cannot be explained by elements exclusively from the first abundance peak of the r-process. Moreover, the steep decline in the Spitzer band, with a power-law index of 3.4 +/- 0.2, can be explained by a few of the heaviest isotopes in the third abundance peak with half-life around 14 days dominating the luminosity (e.g. 140Ba, 143Pr, 147Nd, 156Eu, 191Os, 223Ra, 225Ra, 233Pa, 234Th) or a model with lower deposition efficiency. This data offers evidence that the heaviest elements in the second and third r-process abundance peak were indeed synthesized. Our conclusion is verified by both analytics and network simulations and robust despite intricacies and uncertainties in the nuclear physics. Future observations with Spitzer and James Webb Space Telescope will further illuminate the relative abundance of the synthesized heavy elements.

Observations of radio emission in about 10 per cent of ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs) indicate the presence of strong, persistent magnetic fields in these stars. These results are in contrast to early theoretical expectations on fully-convective dynamos, and to other tracers of magnetic activity, such as H {\alpha} and X-ray luminosity. Radio-frequency observations have been key to physically characterising UCD magnetospheres, although explaining the diverse behaviour within them remains challenging. Most radio-frequency studies of UCDs have been conducted in the 4-8 GHz band, where traditional radio interferometers are typically most sensitive. Hence, the nature of UCD radio emission at low frequencies ($\lesssim 1.4\,\mathrm{GHz}$) remains relatively unexplored, but can probe optically thick emission, and regions of lower magnetic field strengths -- regimes not accessible to higher-frequency observations. In this work, we present the results from Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations of nine UCDs taken at $\sim 610$ and $1300\,\mathrm{MHz}$. These are the first observations of UCDs in this frequency range to be published in the literature. Using these observations, we are able to constrain the coronal magnetic field strength and electron number density of one of the targets to $1 \lesssim B \lesssim 90\,\mathrm{G}$ and $4 \lesssim \log(N_e) \lesssim 10$, respectively. We do not detect the flaring emission observed at higher frequencies, to a limit of a few millijanskys. These results show that some UCDs can produce low-frequency radio emission, and highlights the need for simultaneous multi-wavelength radio observations to tightly constrain the coronal and magnetospheric properties of these stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. 10 pages, 5 figures

Einstein's theory of gravity, general relativity, has passed stringent tests in laboratories, elsewhere in the Solar Sytem, and in pulsar binaries. Nevertheless it is known to be incompatible with quantum mechanics and must differ from the true behaviour of matter in strong fields and at small spatial scales. A key aspect of general relativity to test is the strong equivalence principle (SEP), which states that all freely falling objects, regardless of how strong their gravity, experience the same acceleration in the same gravitational field. Essentially all alternatives to general relativity violate this principle at some level. Previous direct tests of the SEP are limited by the weak gravity of the bodies in the Earth-Moon-Sun system or by the weak gravitational pull of the Galaxy on pulsar-white dwarf binaries. PSR~J0337+1715 is a hierarchical stellar triple system, where the inner binary consists of a millisecond radio pulsar in a $1.6$-day orbit with a white dwarf. This inner binary is in a $327$-day orbit with another white dwarf. In this system, the pulsar and the inner companion fall toward the outer companion with an acceleration about $10^8$ times greater than that produced by falling in the Galactic potential, and the pulsar's gravitational binding energy is roughly $10\%$ of its mass. Here we report that in spite of the pulsar's strong gravity, the accelerations experienced by it and the inner white dwarf differ by a fraction of no more than $2.6\times 10^{-6}$ ($95\%$ confidence level). We can roughly compare this to other SEP tests by using the strong-field Nordtvedt parameter $\hat\eta_N$. Our limit on $\hat\eta_N$ is a factor of ten smaller than that obtained from (weak-field) Solar-System SEP tests and a factor of almost a thousand smaller than that obtained from other strong-field SEP tests., Comment: This is the pre-refereeing version as required by Nature's rules

The second data release from the Gaia mission (Gaia DR2) includes, among its billion entries, as- trometric parameters for binary companions to a number of known pulsars, including white dwarf companions to millisecond pulsars and the non-degenerate components of so-called "black widow" and "redback" systems. We find 22 such counterparts in DR2, of which 12 have statistically sig- nificant measurements of parallax. These DR2 optical proper motions and parallaxes provide new measurements of the distances and transverse velocities of the associated pulsars. For the most part, the results agree with existing radio interferometric and pulsar timing-based astrometry, as well as other distance estimates based on photometry or associations, and for some pulsars they provide the best known distance and velocity estimates. In particular, two of these pulsars have no previous dis- tance measurement: PSR J1227$-$4853, for which Gaia measures a parallax of $0.62\pm 0.16$ mas, and PSR J1431$-$4715, with a Gaia parallax of $0.64\pm 0.16$ mas. Using the Gaia distance measurements, we find that dispersion measure-based distance estimates calculated using the NE2001 and YMW16 Galactic electron density models are on average slightly underestimated, which may be a selection effect due to the over-representation of pulsars at high Galactic latitudes in the present Gaia sample. While the Gaia DR2 results do not quite match the precision that can be achieved by dedicated pulsar timing or radio interferometry, taken together they constitute a small but important improvement to the pulsar distance scale, and the subset of millisecond pulsars with distances measured by Gaia may help improve the sensitivity of pulsar timing arrays to nanohertz gravitational waves., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures; machine-readable version of Table 2 (including Gaia IDs) available with LaTeX source

We present late-time radio observations of GW170817, the first binary neutron star merger discovered through gravitational waves by the advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors. Our observations, carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, were optimized to detect polarized radio emission, and thus to constrain the linear polarization fraction of GW170817. At an epoch of ~244 days after the merger, we rule out linearly polarized emission above a fraction of ~12% at a frequency of 2.8 GHz (99% confidence). Within the structured jet scenario (a.k.a. successful jet plus cocoon system) for GW170817, the derived upper-limit on the radio continuum linear polarization fraction strongly constrains the magnetic field configuration in the shocked ejecta. We show that our results for GW170817 are compatible with the low level of linear polarization found in afterglows of cosmological long gamma-ray bursts. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of future expectations for the study of radio counterparts of binary neutron star mergers identified by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We present results from the first all-sky radio survey in circular polarisation. The survey uses the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) to cover 30900 sq. deg., over declinations south of +30$^{\circ}$ and north of -86$^{\circ}$ centred at 200 MHz (over a 169-231 MHz band). We achieve a spatial resolution of approx. 3' and a typical sensitivity of 3.0 mJy PSF$^{-1}$ over most of the survey region. We demonstrate a new leakage mitigation technique that reduces the leakage from total intensity into circular polarisation by an order of magnitude. In a blind survey of the imaged region, we detect 14 pulsars in circular polarisation above a 6$\sigma$ threshold. We also detect six transient sources associated with artificial satellites. A targeted survey of 2376 pulsars within the surveyed region yielded 33 detections above $4\sigma$. Looking specifically at pulsars previously detected at 200 MHz in total intensity, this represents a 35% detection rate. We also conducted a targeted survey of 2400 known flare stars, this resulted in two tentative detections above $4\sigma$. A similar targeted search for 1506 known exoplanets in the field yielded no detections above $4\sigma$.
