104. Functional Dyes Imparting Softness.

Abstract

Textile dyeing and functional finishing are two necessary but traditionally separated processes employed in textile wet processing, which necessitate repeated washing treatments. Dyeing consumes large quantities of energy and produces large quantities of waste water, and finishing after dyeing necessitates drying of fabric before presenting it to finishing. Simultaneous dyeing and finishing in one bath could obviously reduce both the costs of production and consumption of resources. As an alternative approach, if a functional agent were to be chemically incorporated into a dye without affecting its dyeing properties, the textile dyeing and finishing could be unified into one process. The synthesis of reactive dye which can impart softness in addition to its normal purpose of coloration of cotton fabric was attempted. 115. Effects of prostaglandins E-2 and F-2α on the metabolism of [U-14C]glucose by mouse morulae–early blastocysts in vitro

Abstract

Summary.During 5-h culture in the presence of radioactive glucose, PGE-2 (10 μg/ml) significantly inhibited incorporation of glucose into the acid-soluble glycogen pool. PGE-2 at 1 and 10 μg/ml and PGF-2α at 1 μg but not 10 μg/ml stimulated incorporation of glucose into non-glycogen macromolecules during culture. However, the utilization of acid-soluble glycogen and other biochemical pools was not affected by the presence of PGs in the medium during 24-h chase culture of pulse-labelled embryos. Carbon dioxide production was significantly suppressed in the presence of PGs but accumulation of lactate was not affected. The results indicate that PGE-2 and PGF-2α, in physiological concentrations, directly influence the metabolism of glucose by preimplantation embryos.

116. Effects of oestradiol and progesterone on the metabolism of [U-14C]glucose by mouse morulae and early blastocysts in vitro

Abstract

Summary.The addition of progesterone (10−7to 10−5m) and/or oestradiol (10−10m) during 24-h chase culture of pulse-labelled morulae–early blastocysts did not affect the degradation of radiolabelled glycogen or other biochemical fractions. The presence of a high concentration of progesterone (10−5m) during 5-h pulse culture significantly inhibited incorporation of substrate carbon from [U-14C]glucose into both the acid-soluble and acid-insoluble glycogen fractions, but had no effect on non-glycogen fractions. Catabolic utilization of glucose as estimated by the rate of carbon dioxide and lactate production was not affected by the presence of progesterone (10−7to 10− 5m), oestradiol (10−10to 10−8m) or a combination of both. The results indicate that ovarian steroids at expected physiological concentrations do not directly influence embryonic energy metabolism.

Abstract

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy is a rare benign tumour with local infiltration. The lesion is usually found in the upper torso and rarely occurs in the genital region. Diagnosis before surgery is rare, and complete excision is essential to prevent recurrence. We present a case in which fibrous hamartoma of infancy involving the spermatic cord was found. A pre-operative clinical diagnosis could not be made. On inguinal exploration, the tumour could not be dissected away from the testicular vessels, which necessitated an orchidectomy for complete removal. The case is presented due to its rarity and successful management.
