Abstract

Using Poincar\'e duality in K-theory, we state and prove a Lefschetz fixed point formula for endomorphisms of cross product C*-algebras $C_0(X)\cross G$ coming from covariant pairs. Here $G$ is assumed countable, $X$ a manifold, and $X\cross G$ cocompact and proper. The formula in question expresses the graded trace of the map on rationalized K-theory of $C_0(X)\cross G$ induced by the endomorphism, \emph{i.e.} the Lefschetz number, in terms of fixed orbits and representation-theoretic data connected with certain isotropy subgroups of the isotropy group at that point. Abstract

Let the discrete group G act properly and isometrically on the Riemannian manifold X. Let C_0(X, \delta) be the section algebra of a smooth locally trivial G-equivariant bundle of elementary C*-algebras representing an element \delta of the Brauer group Br_G(X). Then C_0(X,\delta^{-1}) x G is KK-theoretically Poincare dual to (C_0(X,\delta)\otimes_{C_0(X)} C_\tau(X)) xG, where \delta^{-1} is the inverse of \delta in the Brauer group. We deduce this from a strengthening of Kasparov's duality theorem RKK^G(X; A,B) \cong KK^G(C_\tau(X)\otimes A, B). 120. E-government transformation and organisational learning : the case of Supreme Court Registry Office in Korea

Abstract

This thesis critically reviews and evaluates theories of organisational learning and IT-related organisational change with particular reference to the task of explaining users’ acceptance (or rejection) of new technology. It seeks to develop a conceptual model of organisational learning and apply it to the particular case of recent IT-related (e-government) organisational change in Korea’s Supreme Court Registry Office (SCRO). Hitherto, there has been no systematic attempt to analyse the way in which management theories contribute to the electronic government (e-government) transformation effort within the public sector. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by synthesising perspectives drawn from the study of public sector organisation, IT, organisational transformation, and organisational learning. The analysis of the case study organisation (based on a qualitative research methodology) identifies various organisational learning phenomena occurring during the change project within the SCRO. In particular, it elaborates the interplay between the process of learning and change in the level of users’ acceptance (or rejection) of the new technology (the change over time is presented graphically in the form of a ‘support curve’). The research follows the organisational-transformation project since 1994 in terms of the process innovation diffusion model (Cooper and Zmud), which identifies the following key stages: initiation, adoption, adaptation, acceptance, routinisation and infusion (Cooper and Zmud). For each of these stages, processes of organisational learning are linked to the level of users’ acceptance. This aspect of the analysis involves considering the nature and scope of collective, mutual, situated, single-loop and double- loop learning; learning by doing; team learning; and leadership. These various approaches to organisational learning, which emerge from the analysis of the existing organisational-learning literature, are applied to the case analysis to bring out major developments in the SCRO’s organisational transformation. The findings derived from this study provide a framework that can be further applied and tested in future research, and that will also allow public sector management to continuously anticipate the problems involved in cultivating and sustaining users’ acceptance of new technology and nurturing appropriate organisational learning.

Abstract

Exposure to heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury poses serious health risks to pregnant women because of their high toxicity. In this study, we investigated the associations of heavy metal exposure with birth outcomes of Korean infants. Data of 5,215 women between 2015 and 2019 were analyzed. This study was part of the Korean Children's Environmental Health (Ko-CHENS) study. Linear regression and logistic regression analyses were used to examine effects of concentrations of lead, cadmium, and mercury on birth weight, small for gestational age, and large for gestational age after adjusting for maternal age groups, parity, infant sex, education, income, smoking, drinking, body mass index, stillbirth, premature birth, diabetes, hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Besides adjusting for these covariates, each metal was mutually adjusted to estimate birth weight and large for gestational age status. Maternal cadmium concentrations during early pregnancy (β = − 39.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): − 63.76, − 16.17) and late pregnancy (β = − 37.24; 95% CI − 61.63, − 12.84) were significantly associated with birth weight. Cadmium levels during early pregnancy (adjusted OR = 0.637; 95% CI 0.444, 0.912) were also associated with large for gestational age status. Our findings suggest that prenatal cadmium exposure, even at a low level of exposure, is significantly associated with low birth weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

141. The Next Generation’s Intent to Move into Senior Living Communities.

Abstract

Senior living is an emerging research topic among hospitality scholars. Drawing upon the theory of planned behavior, this study examines the determining factors of potential residents, Baby Boomers, moving into senior living communities. We developed a survey derived from expert interviews, and data (n = 400) were collected via Qualtrics. The results show that personal privacy and employee competency develop a positive attitude toward senior living; friends and church members are greater social influences than family members; and psychological preparation and being a decision maker improves seniors’ perception of behavioral control. The synergistic interaction indicates a sense of control over their life could further enhance the positive attitude toward Boomers’ decision to choose senior living.
