Oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OME) are attracting interest as potential diesel substitutes and “green” solvents. They are synthesized based on methanol, which can be source from fossil or renewable feedstocks. In this thesis a potentially scalable and feasible OME synthesis process is described based on the endothermic catalytic dehydrogenation of methanol. The process flow sheet was implemented via a hybrid simulation and showed to be superior to other literature described processes., Oxymethylendimethylether (OME) sind ein interessanter Dieselersatz und Lösungsmittel. Sie werden auf Basis von Methanol hergestellt, so dass ein auf fossilen oder erneuerbaren Energiequellen basierender Rohstoff verwendet werden kann. In dieser Arbeit wird ein potenziell skalierbarer und wirtschaftlich umsetzbarer OME-Syntheseprozess beschrieben, welcher durch Prozesssimulation in einer hybriden Simulationsplattform implementiert wurde und sich gegenüber anderen Prozessen als vorteilhaft erwies.

Pressure drops in plate fin heat exchangers with a single phase and a boiling stream heated by a single phase stream are investigated. The heat flux of these systems is generally not constant along the heat exchanger. A new methodology named as approximative integral solution is developed to investigate these systems analytically. A negative slope of the total pressure drop is equivalent to a static flow instability. Stability criteria for single phase and boiling fluids are derived and compared with results obtained by the commercial heat exchanger software MUSE., Die Druckverluste in Plattenwärmeaustauschern werden studiert, bei denen ein einphasiges bzw. verdampfendes Fluid durch einen warmen einphasigen Strom angewärmt wird. Membrane fouling by biopolymers is a central problem in membrane separation, since it often unpredictably affects permeation and retention. Aiming at a better understanding of fouling and its mitigation, milk protein fractionation by microfiltration was investigated under variation of processing conditions using hollow fiber membranes as an example. Therefrom, conclusions could be drawn with regard to a better design of membrane modules and membrane-based processes in general., Deckschichtbildung (Fouling) durch Biopolymere ist in der Membrantrenntechnik ein zentrales Problem, das Permeation bzw. Retention meist unvorhersehbar beeinflusst. Mit dem Ziel, das Fouling besser zu verstehen und zu minimieren, wurde die Milchproteinfraktionierung mittels Mikrofiltration unter Variation der Prozessbedingungen am Beispiel von Hohlfasermembranen untersucht. Daraus wurden generische Schlussfolgerungen für die Gestaltung von Membranmodulen und -verfahren im Allgemeinen abgeleitet.

Fixed-bed reactors are vital to the chemical industry and computer based analysis is becoming ever more important. The influence of material properties on numerically generated random beds is investigated and the feasibility of simulating pellet shrinkage within a bed is demonstrated. Flow hydrodynamics and conversion of a heterogeneously catalysed gas-phase reaction within single pellet string reactors, a special type of fixed-bed reactor, are characterised, leading to novel design criteria., Festbettreaktoren sind das Zugpferd der chemischen Industrie und computergestützte Analysen selbiger gewinnen an Bedeutung. Hydrodynamik und Umsatzverhalten heterogen katalysierter Gasphasenreaktionen in Perlenschnurreaktoren, einem speziellen Typ Festbettreaktor, werden charakterisiert und neuartige Auslegungskriterien abgeleitet.

Experimental and simulative methods are applied in filtration processes to clarify the effects of packed beds on separation efficiency. Packings accelerate the filtration under certain conditions. Additional wall support increases cake resistance against compressive stress. Moreover, a porosity-enhancing effect is identified as the support is incremented. The results allow to understand the occurring phenomenological interplays and provide a base to develop industrial applications in the future., Experimentelle und simulative Methoden werden in Filtrationsprozessen angewandt, um die Auswirkungen von Füllkörpern auf die Trennleistung zu klären. Füllkörper beschleunigen die Filtration unter bestimmten Bedingungen. Zusätzliche Wandunterstützung erhöht den Kuchenwiderstand gegen Druckspannungen. Ein porositätssteigernder Effekt wird bei zunehmender Unterstützung festgestellt. Die Ergebnisse bieten eine Grundlage für die Entwicklung zukünftiger industrieller Anwendungen.

Schwerpunkt der Arbeit ist die Prozessoptimierung mithilfe mathematischer Methoden. Ein hybrider Ansatz koppelt den Prozesssimulator UniSim Design mit MATLAB als Optimierungsplattform. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird die industrielle Methanolsynthese in drei Detaillierungsstufen betrachtet. Der jeweils optimale Prozess wird aus verfahrenstechnischer Sicht analysiert. Aus numerischer Sicht werden gradientenbasierte und ableitungsfreie Optimierungsprogramme basierend auf verschiedenen Startpunkten, Wiederholungen und Detaillierungsstufen evaluiert., Focus of this thesis is process optimization using mathematical methods. A hybrid approach combines the process simulator UniSim Design with MATLAB as optimization platform. The industrial methanol synthesis in three detail levels is used as example. In terms of process technology, the optimal process is analysed. From a numerical point of view, the gradient-based and derivative-free optimization programs are evaluated based on different starting points, repetitions and detail levels.

The liquefaction of hydrogen is a cost effective way to distribute hydrogen fuel. The aim of this work is the development of efficient and economically viable large-scale hydrogen liquefaction processes. The implemented process simulation and cost estimation models are used to optimize the capital and operating expenses. Two novel process concepts for large-scale hydrogen liquefaction are presented. Compared to state-of-the-art plants, the specific liquefaction costs are reduced by nearly 68% and the specific energy consumption by nearly 40%., Für die Verteilung von Wasserstoff als Treibstoff spielt Flüssig-Wasserstoff zunehmend eine wichtige Rolle. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es kostenoptimierte Prozesse für die Wasserstoffverflüssigung im großen Maßstab zu entwickeln. Die Verflüssigungsprozesse werden mit den implementierten Prozesssimulations- und Kostenmodellen auf Investitions- und Betriebskosten optimiert. Zwei neuartige Verflüssigungsprozesse werden vorgestellt. Im Vergleich zu bisherigen Wasserstoffverflüssigern werden die spezifischen Verflüssigungskosten um bis zu circa 68% und der spezifische Energiebedarf um circa 40% reduziert.

Mittels einer Phasengleichgewichtsapparatur wird die Gaslöslichkeit von CO2 in verschiedenen physikalischen Waschmitteln untersucht. Hierbei werden in der Literatur vorhandene Lücken bei experimentellen Daten geschlossen. Die durch zwei verschiedene experimentelle Verfahren gewonnenen Messdaten werden mittels einer umfangreichen Messunsicherheitsbetrachtung qualitativ bewertet und dienen für weitergehende theoretische Untersuchungen., By the use of a phase equilibrium apparatus the gas solubilty of CO2 in different physical solvents was determined. Hereby existing gaps of experimental data in literature were closed. The gained data, which were determined from two different experimental methods, were validated qualitatively using a comprehensive uncertainty evaluation and were the basis for further theoretical investigations.

Inhalt dieser Arbeit ist die thermodynamische Analyse einer Wasserstofftankstelle mit Kryopumpentechnologie. Hierzu wird ein dynamisches, objektorientiertes Computermodell der Wasserstofftankstelle entwickelt, das insbesondere die Temperaturen des Wasserstoffs und der mediumberührten Anlagenkomponenten im zeitlichen und räumlichen Verlauf berechnen kann. Das Modell wird mit Messdaten aus einer Versuchsanlage validiert und anschließend zur Analyse von verschiedenen Anlagenkonzepten, darunter ein neuartiges Mischkonzepts zur Wasserstoff-Temperierung, eingesetzt., This dissertation describes the thermodynamical analysis of a hydrogen fueling station with cryopump technology. A dynamic, object-oriented computer model of the hydrogen fueling station is developed. This model calculates, amongst other thermodynamical properties, the temporal and spatial variation of the hydrogen temperature and the hydrogen carrying equipment. The model is validated with data from measurements at a testing facility. Then the model is used for the analysis of several hydrogen fueling station designs, including a new method of regulating the hydrogen temperature by mixing two streams of different temperature levels.

Distillation is the leading thermal separation technology that is carried out in many industrial tray columns worldwide. Although distillation columns are expensive in terms of cost and energy, they will remain in service due to unavailability of any equivalent industrially-viable alternative. However, rising energy costs and urgent needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions demand improvements in the energy efficiency of separation processes, globally. This can be achieved by tuning the dynamics of the evolving two-phase dispersion on column trays via design modification and revamping. Thus, it becomes necessary to understand how the two phases evolve over the tray and how they link to tray efficiency for given tray designs, systems and operating conditions. Only then, the cost and energy reduction can be achieved by strategically iterating the tray design and revamps with respect to the resulting tray efficiency. To pursue this strategy, accurate prediction of the separation efficiency based on flow and mixing patterns on the trays is an important prerequisite. In this thesis, the mathematical models relying on flow and mixing patterns for predicting the tray efficiencies were reviewed. These models were developed based on the analyses of two-phase flow, crossflow hydraulics and mass transfer over the trays. Several limitations in the existing models were identified that could lead to inaccurate tray efficiency predictions. First, the conventional models do not account for any variation in the local two-phase flow in their formulation. These models rather consider a homogeneous flow scenario based on flow monitoring at the tray boundaries only, which indicates a black box efficiency estimation. Second, the existing models do not consider any vapor flow maldistribution, which can be detrimental to the tray efficiency. The aim is to develop a microkinetic model for both processes, making use of the single-event methodology. The resulting cracking model is applied in reactor design and process optimization studies. Further insight into extrapolation possibilities and adsorption is finally used for an extension to MTO., Sowohl Olefin-Cracking als auch Methanol-zu-Olefinen (MTO) stellen alternative Routen zu niederen Olefinen dar, weshalb eine Modellierung der Kinetik auf sauren Zeolithen erfolgt. Für beide Prozesse sollen rein mikrokinetische Modelle basierend auf der Single-Event-Methodik erstellt werden. Das resultierende Cracking-Modell wird für Studien zum Reaktordesign und zur Prozessoptimierung verwendet. Modelling flow and mass transfer of thermal separation equipment constitutes one of the most challenging tasks in fluids process engineering. The difficulty of this task comes from the multiscale multiphase flow phenomena in rather complex geometries. Both analysis of flow and mass transfer on different scales as well as validation of models and simulation results require advanced experimental and measurement techniques. As a follow-up to intensive discussions during the 2019 Tutzing Symposium “Separation Units 4.0” a wide set of available modern experimental technologies is presented.
