101. Application of the parametric description of the isotope shift to the lanthanides

Abstract

After its success in the explanation of the isotope shift in the 5d elements, the applicability of the parametric description was also tested for the lanthanides. The following configurations were found to be suitable and useful objects for investigation: 4ƒ^n6s^2 (Nd, Sm, Dy, Er), 4ƒ^n5d6s (Eu, Yb), 4ƒ^n6s6p (Eu, Er, Yb), and 4ƒ^n−15d6s^2 (Gd). The first results for Sm, Eu, and Dy are compiled.

Abstract

A 1×12 metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodiode array operating at 10 4;Gbit/s per channel was developed for short-haul 0.85 4;µm wavelength parallel optical links. The GaAs-based MSM photodiodes with a diameter of 80 4;µm have a responsivity of 0.30 4;A/W at 3 4;V, adark current of less than 1 4;nA at 3 4;V, a capacitance of 0.20 4;pF at 1 4;MHz, and a −3 4;dB bandwidth of 10 4;GHz at (2.5 4;V, 50 4;Ω).

Abstract

With laser-atomic-beam-spectroscopy the hyperfinestructure splitting constants A, B and the lifetimes t of the Mn I levels 3d54s4p z4p3/2,5/2 were determined from the UV intercombination lines 321,7 nm and 322,5 nm. We obtained: A=-821(3)MHz, B=-40(30)MHz, t=1120(50)nsec for the J=3/2 level and A=-607,8(1,5)MHz, B=+75(15)MHz, t=970(50)nsec for the J=5/2 level.

Abstract

The Scenario project has set a rather ambitious and even risky goal: to lay down a roadmap for future research in natural risks and mitigation policy in the European Union, drawing on ten years of research on natural hazards, mainly funded under the V (1998–2002) and VI (2002–2006) Framework Programmes. The goal is not only ambitious, but could be easily labelled as unrealistic and even arrogant. Initial meetings of the project set the stage for harsh discussions on methodology, specific steps and basic definitions to be followed by the research teams. Despite initial differences, many of which persist, between diverse hazard communities, and between climate change and natural hazards scholars, it is interesting to note that it was possible to achieve some commonalities and convergence points.

In this study, three factors appear to influence significantly whether a child in foster care would be returned to the parent. The factors proved to be the number of persons in the parent's home, the number of friends in the neighborhood, and the frequency with which the parent saw those friends.

Abstract

This observational study of 74 families investigated 3 areas of maternal psychological functioning (emotional distress, authoritarian child-rearing values, negative perceptions of children) that might mediate the relationship between 3 separate dimensions of family demographic characteristics, conceptualized as chronic environmental stressors (i.e., financial, structural, and historical circumstances), and the emotionally affective behavior of mothers. Demographic conditions accounted for 52.9% of the variance in mothers' psychological characteristics and as much as 36.6% of the variance in positive and negative behaviors to children. The psychological characteristics explained as much as 15.1% of the variance in maternal behavior. Both chronic stress and the psychological variables had an independent influence on the general emotional tone of maternal behavior. The findings provide tentative support for the conclusion that the psychological characteristics examined here partially mediate the influence of some demographic or stressful life conditions on the positive and negative behaviors of mothers.

Abstract

Slides depicting infants in 7 different emotion states were shown to 20 abusive mothers and to 20 matched, nonabusive mothers. The ability of these subjects to identify general emotional affect (positive and negative) and specific emotion signals was tested. Results indicated that abusive mothers were more likely than the comparison group to incorrectly identify specific emotion signals and to label negative affect as positive.
